With religion, we were running blind, but it was a kind of blind that, through whatever luck or providence (or darwinian process) was able to deliver us to this time and place. It also had the advantage that a large proportion of society would be directed in the same way to the same ends at any given time, so at least some stability was assured. You could have a pretty good idea of what the people around you were trying to do with the reality you all shared, and that it was pretty much the same as you.

With ego-worship, all that matters is immediate gratification. Every single modern malady can be traced back to this one principle.

Degenerate sex and consumerism is easy to explain-- that's the straight pleasure principle.

But what about pathological altruism? Welfare, refugees, politically correct speech? Surely these things hint that maybe I'm wrong, and these people are following some higher--if corrupt-- morality, right?

No. That is still immediate gratification. If the ego is possessed by a demon of hunger, it will seek out food. If the ego is possessed by a spirit of compassion, it will seek to alleviate suffering of others.

So, you end being TOO kind, ignoring the voices in your mind that might tell you things like "this will harm you," "you can't feed them forever," "you only want the praise," or "isn't this condescending?"

It is necessary to nurture different aspects of your nature. But modern people don't want to face that they're not who/what they think they are, nor are they always under control, and that denial of the truth causes them to end up enslaved by those forces whose existence they refuse to acknowledge. If you refuse to acknowledge that some subconscious process is having an influence on you, you assume that the influence you're under is just want you wanted all along anyway.

And "what (I think) I want" is the principle of the ego. By enshrining it as the ideal drive of our being, we have become unmoored, chaotic.

The problem with libertarianism is that it seeks to give individuals complete freedom WITHOUT the complete responsibility that must necessarily entail. It re-evaluates the bible from a Jungian perspective, understanding the stories as being reflective of deep evolutionary drives within ourselves, not JUST reflections of some archaic political climate.

I feel like humanity is being tested right now, for whether it should be allowed to continue to exist. He's not some rockstar, he's got the demeanor of Mr. Rogers. He uses very outdated slang. Just by persona and personality, he should have been completely invisible on the channer landscape. He should've been a fifteen minute curiosity.

Milo's followers, you could make the argument that they're a cult of personality. Milo's got the wit, he wins nearly every engagement, the mainstream has to resort to casting aspersions and a big scandal to have any cultural leverage over him at all. That's impressive, it's something you want to get behind in the hope that some of it rubs off on you. But with Peterson, there's just really nothing aspirational about him unless you take a really long lifetime view (which you wouldn't expect shallow cultists to do).
