It can depend, but in general bartenders make far more. A busy night at the right spot and you can go home with $300-400 in tips alone. Bartenders also keep their tips whereas in some places waitstaff tips are split with busboys and other kitchen staffs.

Depends on the place and on the time. During dinner at a restaurant, usually servers. During happy hour or late at night, usually bartenders.

Been a bartender for 7 years in 4 different establishments. Unless it's a bar where there food sucks or a restaurant where the bar sucks, both positions typically make about the same over time.

What you should be asking is which skills do you posess. Im lead bartender in a 3 michelin star restaurant in san Francisco. On average we do 400 a night in tips per person. Most often more, sometimes less. If its your first bar job the only place willing to hire a newbie will be a dive bar. You will be lucky to make 100 a night on a weekend. Be prepared for rude and uninformed guests. If you stick it out for a year or two you might get into a decent restaurant making double that a few nights a week. If you keep it up and know your shit you can work in better restaurants or cocktail bars until you land a high volume spot in a good city. And if you're real good, there's always consulting work to be found. Good luck.
