Because it was feared that Joe would, in his funny old mood swings, genocide that entire region of the world; local party leaders, population, man woman child and anything living down to the microscopical level.

When they sentenced the priests they didn't dare read out that the letter was meant for Stalin and the priests, ironically, weren't executed because that would have drawn too much attention.
