What a lazy and uninformed answer. The effort/skill model of art is pretty baseless. And if you're talking about "skill", then does medieval art suddenly go out the window for being anatomically incorrect?

Not really. A lot of it just questions popularly held aesthetics. The moderist and post-modernist movements were really seeking to escape the arbitrary limits of older convention.

I think what I've posted is undeniably beautiful.

Simply throwing away entire art movements just because you don't enjoy their false stereotype, is just ignorant. All art movements have serious beauty and insight to offer-- limiting yourself to just one era is shameful.

If you guys knew anything about the modern art movement that's been going on recently, a lot of new artists are following suit against "modern art", just as the impressionists did.

Lots of art academies in Russia and China have been pushing fundamentals over creativity, compared to western art institutes. The main problem with a lot of western art institutes are that people who go there are from rich families, and they don't need any artistic background; because most of the schools are private establishments, their revenue is solely on these kids who don't even need to be good artists and can draw a bunch of bullshit and skim through art theory and practice and still get a degree, and because they are rich, they can afford to get their name out on some garbage bullshit.
>>
>>130124669
Duchamp was a great shitposter though, and a better Cubist. Modern art still had some bright points. Art Deco was fucking amazing and some of the good post war jet age futurism was good too. Everything since then has been absolute garbage though.

>>130116758
>In 49 BC, perhaps on January 10, C. Julius Caesar led a single legion, Legio XIII Gemina, south over the Rubicon from Cisalpine Gaul to Italy to make his way to Rome. In doing so, he (deliberately) broke the law on imperium and made armed conflict inevitable. Suetonius depicts Caesar as undecided as he approached the river, and attributes the crossing to a supernatural apparition. It was reported that Caesar dined with Sallust, Hirtius, Oppius, Lucius Balbus and Sulpicus Rufus on the night after his famous crossing into Italy January 10.

>According to Suetonius, Caesar uttered the famous phrase ālea iacta est ("the die has been cast").[1] The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" has survived to refer to any individual or group committing itself irrevocably to a risky or revolutionary course of action, similar to the modern phrase "passing the point of no return." Caesar's decision for swift action forced Pompey, the lawful consuls (C. Claudius Marcellus and L. Cornelius Lentulus Crus), and a large part of the Roman Senate to flee Rome in fear. Caesar's subsequent victory in Caesar's civil war ensured that punishment for the infraction would never be rendered. This took place during the time of the Roman Republic.

"The Fall of Simon Magus is a subject taken from The Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine and it involves a contest between a sorcerer at the court of Emperor Nero and Saint Peter. Nero is seen enthroned on the left while Saint peter and Saint Paul are on the right. Simon Magus, endeavouring to prove his magical powers, attempts to launch himself from a wooden tower towards heaven, but even though supported by demons his experiment fails and he falls to the ground." older convention is arbitrary, and what you've posted is undeniably beautiful? what a contradiction, and how false it is is immediately obvious when comparing your 'obviously beautiful' scribbles to any of the stuff ITT. modern art has criticised and undermined art to such an extent as to make it non existent, it's no longer anything. modern artists have destroyed the foundations of the entire form and for what? to satisfy their own nihilism? because they're too lazy to spend the thousands and thousands of hours it takes to truly their craft most likely. fuck off with your subversive soul destroying shite.

Not at all. I'm only rejecting the claim that only certain art-- that is, art that meets a certain criterion of looking "realistic", or "classical" is the only art that can be beautiful or true. That's flat out wrong. I never said art can't be objectively beautiful-- only that applying arbitrary rules to them is totally false, doesn't make any sense.

I'm not even rejecting the stuff posted ITT, in fact I'm a big fan of a lot of it. Playing the "realistic" art is the only art card

I don't see why art can't just be fun, often beautiful, investigations and expressions of how we interact with reality.
Or why it can't attempt to capture feelings that can't be conveyed in conventional stylings. Your philosophy effectively kills any sort of experimentation.

You've said very little about the art itself, and more about your delusional political view of what, you imagine, is behind the art. Disgraceful.

it's not about realism, but acting as if >>130123286 is beautiful is just obviously wrong to anyone who hasn't abandoned sense or intuition. that you like it only speaks of an ugliness inside yourself, Godlessness, abandonment of the transcendent and beautiful, in favour of some relativistic nightmare where there is no hope. it is ugly, it is nihilistic, it's shite.

it's only value is that it genuinely reflects the miserable age we live in.
>>
>>130127967
Oh no, i'm not insulted at all. It's fine that people have their taste, even if I do find a lot of the stuff I posted objectively beautiful. I just can'st stand the baseless. pseudo-ideological arguments.

Anyway, yours is an interesting view. It's strange how you feel that way when generally cubism, futurism, impressionism intended to convey motion. For example, I still find>>130123286
>>130123817
pretty electrifying. I just think the crazyness fits what they're depicting. They're moments that sort of refuse to be forced into place.

>>
>>130128437
Again you're not talking about the actual painting, or why you find it ugly.
It's a depiction of a man (perhaps men) with a lance on a horse charging. What's so godless or nihilistic or etc. about that? The work is capturing the chaotic motion of it.
I like its palette-- it's almost industrial but also is totally old european world, I like its compositon, I mean the lancer seems to jump off the canvas, and the fact that it isn't centered means that the lancer is already dashing past the frame. It's a lot of fun to look at.

But you can go on with your pretentious pseudo bullshit if you want. I just want more people to enjoy more art that they'd probably enjoy

You've never even tried to engage with art-- you want a cheap product that gives itself away instantly.

And w/r/t the ugliness thing-- why shouldn't there be art that exposes horror or ugliness in our world? Isn't there something valuable and beautiful about that?

>why you find it ugly.
the colours are unpleasant, the forms are nonsensical, the text in the corner is jarring, the splotchiness is nauseating, the thick black scribbles are shocking and ugly. the feeling behind the painting is outright unpleasant, i don't see tremendous thought having gone into it, it looks like the artist was half drunk and feeling lazy and just threw his brush at the canvas in a deliberately haphazard way. it doesn't feel like the work of a master of his craft revealing something about the human spirit, it feels like a philosophically dead person bletching his wretchedness onto the canvas and inflicting it onto the rest of us.
it looks like what i used to draw when i was a chronically depressed 16 year old sitting drunk by myself at 4am feeling absolutely horrific. i don't see any value in going down the path that work like that takes you down, it's a dead end of despair.
>pretentious pseudo bullshit
again, fuck off.
>you want a cheap product that gives itself away instantly.
no, i want something beautiful, or masterful, or provoking that reveals things beyond what i know or feel now, that produce awe or hope or just something genuine. i don't want people that believe in nothing inflicting their wretched and corrupted and blackened soul onto me.
>why shouldn't there be art that exposes horror or ugliness in our world? Isn't there something valuable and beautiful about that?
yes, it tells us that there's something deeply wrong with our society, that it only produces the ugly and the horrible now, and has forgotten beauty.

As an actual art nerd, most art, period, is pretty shit. What /pol/ hates isn't modern art, is abstractism.
>>130123351
It must be incredibly validating to think that.
>>
>>130129642
>the colours are unpleasant, the forms are nonsensical, the text in the corner is jarring, the splotchiness is nauseating, the thick black scribbles are shocking and ugly.
See now this is the criticism I want to see.
Again, it's funny cuz that's the stuff I really like about it. It has so much energy to it that >>130122023 for example, just doesn't have.

And the jarring text in the corner, I think, sort of fucks up your idea of time in it. It's blatantly modern, the text, and it says "Progressi"

So you have this rushing, violent figure, getting lost in the act, in the dust clouds that surround it, and time itself. That's just fun to me.-- Not to mention that, given the painter, this is all a positive thing. We're talking Fascist Italian Futurism here. The power of man to conquer himself and his environment through industry.

It's really fine that you don't like it, I'm dead serious, but leave this shit behind
> it feels like a philosophically dead person bletching his wretchedness onto the canvas and inflicting it onto the rest of us.
>yes, it tells us that there's something deeply wrong with our society, that it only produces the ugly and the horrible now, and has forgotten beauty.
Because it's not actual critique.
The world has always had horrible things in it. You want art to shy away from it just because it makes you uncomfortable?
Can you prove art like this doesn't take effort?
Why ought art be "masterful"? What does that even mean?

>>130129740
Bad news man, thread's been over for a bit.
>>
>>130129642
Art isn't necessarily meant to make you feel good, sometimes it's meant to embody negative emotions. An extreme example in other mediums is A Serbian Film. Its supposed to leave you will a terrible feeling that never ends, and that's why I liked it.

Most people can't enjoy what they'd call modern art because they have no frame of reference, and an expectation that the art will be pleasant, because those arts are seen as "high" arts. As an artist, I can say they are not. What /pol/ probably hates the most are the types that try to use modern art as a vehicle for expressing this idea itself, which is meta, and a novel idea, but it's overplayed, and nobody wants to see it.
>>

>>130130460
>Again, it's funny cuz that's the stuff I really like about it
which is why i said it speaks of an ugliness in yourself. i can relate to this, because like i said i drew shit that resembled this when i was a deeply depressed, nihilistic and suicidal teenager. and it was reflective of my feelings at the time, and maybe it was useful as an outlet, but ultimately it was a disgusting period of lies and hopelessness. there was no truth in how i saw the world then, it was just a time of confusion and misery. there's nothing of value there.
>Fascist Italian Futurism
so it's the art of an ideology, which makes sense. it's Godless.
>It's really fine that you don't like it, I'm dead serious, but leave this shit behind

>just because it makes you uncomfortable?
no, there's plenty in this thread that made me uncomfortable. it was your painting i had a problem with.
>Can you prove art like this doesn't take effort?
i compare >>130123286 to >>130126227 and it's self evident, and that's good enough for me. i can't prove it to you.
>Why ought art be "masterful"? What does that even mean?
it's the difference between a genius who has spent a lifetime mastering the craft and an amateur. it's not necessary to produce something of value but it certainly helps.

>>130130595
my favourite films are tragedies, i like art that conveys sadness or despair or even ugliness if it's done well. i don't see anything of value in the art the commie posted though.
