First floor American style is superior to bleeding Ground Floor.

Inches are fine to use along as metric. Go on any building site or machine shop and everyone still uses it in England.

ARE UK SYSTEM is the most logical - think about the physical height above the ground each floor is (assuming each storey of the building is 4m high):

ground floor: 0x4 = 0
1st floor: 1x4 = 4
2nd floor: 2x4 = 8 etc.

array indexing starts at zero in non-retarded programming languages for similar reasons.

Honey, it's gonna be alright, you'll make it through this.

>>129525186
People don't measure their distance from the ground to figure out what floor they're on. They merely remember how many floors there have been.

When they enter a building, that's 1 floor. You could even say, the first floor.

When they go up a floor, that's 2 floors. You could say the second floor. No sweetie it isn't the first floor, that's not how counting works.

>>
It comes from the days of buildings not having a FLOOR on the GROUND, because hey, guess what, a FLOOR is an actual specific thing and we used to make houses without them.

By the time having a floor on the ground inside your house was standard the scheme was engrained.

Both systems are correct, just consider it a colloquialism.

As a fun little experiment imagine this scene:

You are standing outside an old two-story farmhouse; lovely and rustic, it has wattle and daub walls and a charming thatched roof. Smoke snakes out through one open gable end.
You walk in through the open door and take in the view. Small slatted windows allow only a low amount of light to enter but the large room is comfy and warm. You smell herbs drying over a pot and see hay in the corner for the dogs and pigs to lay on.
You notice that the ground beneath your shoes is bare compacted earth, pressed down into a semi-smooth hard surface over many years of use. This is not a floor, no floor was laid here.
Looking towards the far wall you see a solid looking wooden stair leading to the next level up and a somewhat rickety looking floor serves as both the ceiling of this downstairs room and the floor of the room above.

Being the only floor in the entire house, what number would you assign to it if you had to?
If almost all houses for generations were built according to such a system, would it be impossible for the numbering system to stick culturally?

>brit driving structure
>none of the world except their most loyal commonwealth uses it
Because the majority of people are right-side dominant, driving on the left (with the oncoming traffic on the driver's right side) is objectively a better system than driving on the right. The difference isn't huge, but it is big enough to be statistically fairly clear that driving on the left reduces fatalities.

And I barely even notice when someone leave the 'u' out of 'colour' or 'honour' and shit like that, although Lindybeige does make a good point that it preserves the etymology of the word and can sometimes add meaning.

This.

In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point.

An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it.

Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water ?’ is ‘Go ** yourself,’
because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.

No. It's a floor, not a ground. When you're inside, you say to pick something up off the FLOOR, not the ground. Same goes for randomly calling it "ground" when referring to floors. The "ground" floor is the first floor above the ground, not the second, so your "first floor above the ground" argument doesn't really make sense.

That sounds like an awful lot of work. If you're making tea for the Queen, then by all means, draw water from the Tigris, have it shipped over land by wagon, boil it in a copper kettle over cherry logs, transfer it to a sterling silver teapot, add teabags made from the finest muslin, and serve it up in blue porcelain.

Meanwhile, I'll be on my fiftieth microwaved cup—oops, I mean fifty-first because I forgot my "ground cup."

I know that, but you said it somehow removed the flavor.

Do tell me the magical process by which heating the bag removes the flavor from the tea?
>>
>>129532138
>using 1000+W microwave to heat water where about 40% of the energy used is lost.
>using a heating element where almost 100% of the energy is used to heat the water because the heat lost is gained by the water increasing efficiency
>much quicker to use a kettle to boil 2.5 liters of water than put in 9 mugs into a microwave
>also added benefit of not over heating it and producing an exploding boiling water steam cloud when you take out the mug burning your skin
>>
>>129532689
That's interesting. So over in the Netherlands you would place two bags in a teapot for two people?

I wonder if our teabags have become smaller over time and therefore need more to achieve the same strength in a given amount of water.

I can promise you that this isn't something I have made up, it was as well known in Sheffield when I was a lad thirty years ago as it is here in Wales where I live now.

>Do tell me the magical process by which heating the bag removes the flavor from the tea?

because you're cooking the tea instead of brewing it
>>
>>129532890
The point was that you place presumably a teabag into cold water then heat it up, this is not how you brew tea.

You apply hot water to tea so as to brew it better. The sudden temperature change of boiling hot water on a teabag will give you a much better brew rather than having it stew in cold water.

It could be argued that the rapid heating of the tea itself may denature it and promote tannin expulsion.
>>
>>129532209
Not really.
Microwaves are terrible at anything that requires high heat, or prolonged low heat.
Basically they are good at anything that involves boiling water (literally their entire function).
>>
>>129533211
Microwaves only heat water.

If the tea is in with the water, the water is absorbing the flavor of the tea, if the tea isn't with the water, it isn't being heated.

I refuse, simply refuse, to be lectured by a Yank on how to brew tea. If it's one thing we know how to do, it's making cups of fucking tea.

Trust me, you haven't got a clue.

Microwave the water seperately, then pour it over your tea, it will taste much better.
>>
>>129529271
>Put cold water and a tea bag in a cup and then microwave it for 2 minutes or something? Absolutely disgusting.
Yes, but you put the teabag in after you've heated the water up. I have a Keurig though, so I have tea K-cups that brews the tea just like it would coffee. Iced tea is delicious though for summer!
>>
>>129532418

Gee, nice scientific explanation there, fucko. Now that you've solved the microwave conundrum, you should move on to the question of why all your fucking farm animals are fed on soy pellets you lusciously titted, slack-jawed, obese mongrel.
>>
>>129533089
It depends on the amount of water.
You can get tea that comes in teapot size, or cup size.
So you put 1 bag of teapot size, or 1 bag per person assuming you only make enough tea for the number of people.
>>
>>129520312

What happens in a building where the ground floor isn't at the bottom? You have to fuck about with someone telling you what floor - Sad.
>>
>>129533211
>because you're cooking the tea instead of brewing it
Putting a temporary halt to my giving you shit (which I'm thoroughly enjoying, by the way), you're right about the tea. If the bags steep in an open-topped container, volatile chemicals that provide flavor can easily escape. Steeping tea is a variant of the process of infusion, and infusion is never, ever done in an open-topped container if the active medicinal substances are to be retained.

Now where was I? It's a HOOD, not a BONNET! And what the hell is "chuffed" supposed to mean, anyway?!!!
>>
>>129533724

That sounds interesting. What's a brand I can look for to see it myself? The novelty of a teapot portion in one bag amuses me.

I think it's pickwick, but I buy loose leafs now and brew that, so I'm not sure.
Those teapot bags are funny. They look like they are going to explode compared to those cup bags.
>>
>>129533393

You're still cooking the tea leaves in the water, you're not supposed to do that, you may as well be making broth

There is such a things as stewed tea, it's bitter and disgusting, it's pretty much what microwaved tea tastes like

If making iced tea you boil the bags as you need to make a syrup with the concentrated tea and then water/ice it down to taste.

Regular tea is boiled water with tea added so it has a better flavor. Different temps for the water depending on the variant of tea. Pre-heat the pot before adding boiling water if you are wanting to make it properly.

Good grief I refuse to accept that statement. Driving in the US seems wonderful, your large lanes, clean lines and flat landscape lends itself to driving so well.

Here in West Wales where everything is built along the sides of the valleys the roads are atrocious, narrow winding things with sheer rock on one side and a sheer drop on the other, when two cars meet one generally stops to allow the other to squeeze through.

No, America is a land of wonderment and promise and I will not believe that you are worse drivers.

All of those reasons are exactly why we are shit at driving, we don't have to be. You guys on the other hand have these tiny roads, as you described, and barrel along at 60mph on streets that have no speed limit signs, while passing on blind corners and then flying into roundabouts that aren't sufficiently labeled and rarely have accidents.

As an American it's really awe inspiring and an amazing thing to be apart of. Hats off to UK drivers, especially Scots you fuckers are goddamned maniacs, I love it.

The speed cameras are fucked though m8, they're literally everywhere. I'm sure a ticket's in the mail for me as I type this.

>>129534992
They're tiny but it makes sense for them to be. I actually found your cars to be pretty great for the environment, nimble and responsive, perfect for hustling in and out of roundabouts and navigating tight city streets and narrow country roads.
