There's more publicity now, that's all. I don't know what people did in the early 20th century but I know in the 20s there were experimental surgeries. I imagine trans people would often kill themselves, resort to self-mutilation, maybe eat animal ovaries/testicles as a type of primitive HRT.

The thing is that now that people know about gender dysphoria and how to treat it medically, a lot of people who would have suffered without knowing what was wrong with them can now get help and have hope for some kind of a life. Hating on trans people just makes it harder. For the most part trans people don't want trouble, and giving them trouble makes it harder for everyone.

A lot of people think they can basically bully trans people out of their gender dysphoria, but that doesn't work, it just makes trans people more depressed and dysfunctional. It has nothing to do with parents and how they raise their kids either.

You can fight trans people and make them more miserable and dysfunctional, or you can if not accept them at least tolerate them. If they don't feel so harassed by society, they're more likely to be functional members of society.

The truth about the transgender issue is it doesn't really exist. It didn't even exist a decade ago. Sure there were a couple of fags who dressed up like chicks, but those were just transvestites and they weren't so mentally ill to think they were actually women.
Over the past decade this insane theory of gender malleability has gained prominence and weak minded and opportunistic neurotics have latched onto it for any number of reasons. Some see it as the reason they're unhappy and a clear action to take to make them better. Some need attention and see it as a way to be a part of a group for the first time. Some want victim status for social power. Etcetera, etcetera. There will be as many reasons as there are people, but the PRIMARY reason is that it has become a popular fad. This has caused the barrier of entry for such behavior to drop to such a level as to make it a realistic choice for these poor people. That's the root problem.
Something that pisses me off is this talk about how dick chopping surgery is the "only treatment available". Bullshit. It's bodily mutilation and reinforces their delusions. If we had a rash of people who thought they were napolean the "only treatment" wouldn't be to give them all hats and sceptres. The only treatment would be to put them into mental institutions where they could become well again.

The society-wide "acceptance" of this behavior is really just apathy and lack of community. Nobody cares enough about these people to give them tough love and force them to look at reality. Instead we celebrate them for a day when they come out, and then ignore them as they spiral into drug abuse and eventual suicide.

If you do figure out what's going on in the brain, then what? Some kind of science fiction neurosurgery? Finding a neurological cure isn't a priority because there's unlikely to be one that's even remotely practical. In the meantime existing treatments help, and early transitioning works even better than adult transitioning.

No, if you still have gender dysphoria after you start puberty it almost always gets worse over time. It has nothing to do with how smart you are. Gender dysphoria, when it's bad enough, is like a cancer that will destroy you if you don't at least get on HRT.

Think of it this way. Puberty is rough for almost everyone, but for someone with gender dysphoria, it's far worse. An MtF brain reacts badly to testosterone, and likewise with estrogens for an FtM, and you feel like your body is being destroyed by hormones. Getting test blocked and getting on estrogens (and sometimes progesterone) for MtFs and testosterone for FtMs can halt the downward spiral and start improving things physically and mentally.
