Their main purpose is to pin the other guy down so you can maneuver. So they went with a smaller bullet so you could make the guy put his head down more for the same weight load. weapon selection depends on what you want to do

Ill suggest the Pistol should be a .22 and you should use CCI stinger hollowpoints. If you score the point with a + shape they will open up into sharp petals interally. A guy I know can take down deer with it (lung shot, they only get about a hundred yards before falling over).

Handguns make more sense to me for home defence. In addition to the over penetration issue, they are easier to maneuver in doors, unless you live in a palace. More readily available since you can have it on your person or always stashed near by in a desk drawer etc. It's also easier to disarm someone carrying a long gun into close quarters combat, which is a likely scenario at home.

Home and personal defense you go with a handgun period. Rifle makes little sense unless you need to deal with something on a large property like animals (human or otherwise). Bodyguard is one of the best cost/performance conceal carry guns on the market. I own one and daily that gun. I didn't care for the stock sights or trigger though. It's a 380 so thin and quite small and won't print if you laws against that. I also use a PK380 and a Sig P320 with compact lower sometimes. I prefer the Sig with it's full size lower though and picatinny rail. I might opt for the lower with laser built in but I dig the kits with flashlight and laser combo AIO (usually green for some reason). The Rugers the cheaper ones aren't bad for conceal carry and house guns either.

Trap is shot at long range (for a shotgun 20-40 yds) with clays flying away from you. Skeet is close range crossing clays. Use full choke + for trap, improved choke or less for skeet

Yes they can be, The machining isn't complex at all. But the regulation behind it is very, and I mean, very punishing. There are some lowers that are sold as "low shelf" that would be compatible with an auto sear and trigger group. But you would get royally fucked if you do so.
