As other people pointing out, it's an obvious choice to not get a pitbull. Especially when you have children. However one that is from a proper breeder from actual companion lines and you actually raise the dog properly, you should be fine. I still wouldn't take that risk personally, since there are many breeds out there that are wonderful with children and known for such.

Getting some random ass indbred pitbulls from the shelter that probably has spent about 99% of it's life out in a dirt lawn and just got left there when the beaner family that owned moved is going to have some adjustment issues that only people with the experience and capacity to handle rescue dogs should be taking.

Of course, shelters are eager to lower their capacity and the idea that you're doing good simply by getting a dog from the shelter also plays into this.

Even if you look at labs, some a bred more to be actual retreivers, some are bred to be service dogs. When referring to one from an actual breeder, I mean where the dogs are akc certified with papers, the breeder obviously has experience breeding and the dogs are well taken care of, and the breeder has certain goals in mind for the dogs temperament, taking the disposition of the two breeding animals into consideration. Now if you get a dog such as that, and train it properly and handle any potential future behavior issues appropriately, then yeah you'll probably fine. Like I said though, why take the risk.
