I have spent my entire working life managing retail and restaurants, sure a lot of them are teens just trying to make a few bucks. But there are a growing number of adults who because of poor choices in life or just because of shitty luck of the draw don't have the option better themselves. But I don't think that means anyone deserves to live one paycheck away from the streets. Many of these people have had horrible things done to them or have mental disorders and the best they can do is hold down a basic job. But most of them work their asses off while being treated like literal scum by their employers. You wonder why your food is wrong or that cashier wasn't super nice to you? Maybe its because they have been working for the last 6 hours without even given the chance to go to the bathroom and they are about to piss themselves and then they get told they have to stay late even if they have to pick up their kids from day care. About the lack of respect, I've quit jobs over less. I always plan for being able to drop literally everything for months, and that hasn't been as a luxury of being paid well. I just plan for it and save money.
