Because high class food is a meme and it's one of the oldest memes in existence.

I remember some anon years back posted a receipt of a party he helped cater. They paid 10,000 dollars for "diamond chardonnay", which was just regular old chardonnay with diamonds in the bottom of the class.

People pay for the dumbest shit.

I notice the same pattern at my workplace.

>low-paying (relative to the cost of living) tech job at small company
>nearly everyone eats outside for brunch
>nearly everyone owns iphones, fancy car
>buys expensive electronics and clothes
>goes on expensive vacations

I'm guessing that the reason they don't save is because they expect to inherit property from their parents. Most of my coworkers come from middle-class families.

Unlike them, I don't have a safety net. My savings are my safety net so I have to save as much as possible.

>How am i going to save anything if i don't make enough money?

How about you learn a trade or craft, and apply for a better paying job instead of flipping burgers or grinding coffee beans. Just a thought.
>>
Since august I have spent $90 on things besides food, bills, gas, tuition, textbooks, groceries, school supplies, etc

I barely scrape by on my budget

Am I eating beans and lintels ? No.
>>
I agree with this to an extent - there are a lot of immature morons in my generation.

Having said that, I'm a professional in London earning £26k (for a job I'd get a lot more for in the US, or Canada, or Aus).

This works out at £1550ish a month after deductions. Rent and bills is £750, and that's in a shitty house share like I'm still a student. Transport is about £200 a month. Phone bill is small, but it's an extra £10. £20 a month payment to my professional body. Don't know how much on food, but there's not a lot of headroom with what's left.

If I wanted to buy something livable in this city, the deposit is going to be £25k+. Even if I eat beans on toast every day, I can save what? Maybe £200 a month if I really push it. By the time I reach that £25k it'll then actually be £40k for a deposit. Chasing a dream.

A large portion of the young, educated people in my country are living the same life because most jobs are in London, and most jobs are underpaid in this shitty country.

Dude, move out of London. It has one of the highest costs of living in the world. Make less doing something else somewhere else with a lower cost of living. Think for yourself, the system wants you barely scraping by while you are making someone else money. Don't play "their" game, make up your own.

Yep - I probably am going to move out of London. But realistically what that means is moving out of this country, the rest of the country just has nothing to offer in terms of industry, jobs, culture etc.

It's a heavy decision and one I can't take lightly, all of my family and friends are here. But I think I'm going to look into going to US or Canada.

>>127605329

Because millennials are fucking dumb and brainwashed. Fall for the credit goy. Good goy, take out more student loans for graduate school or you can't find work :) Wanna know what milennials are doing as far as cars go?

Fucking leasing. And they're not leasing civics. Some of the most popular lease brands are BMWs and Lexus. Thousands of dollars in monthly car payments when they have near a hundred thousand in debt.

They never fucking escape debt, just take on more credit and more loans for shit they cant afford. This is how you ruin your fucking life - by not knowing the value of a dollar. By having no fucking concept of what a loan or credit really is (hint: its not your fucking money and you WILL pay it back).

Save your goddamn money. Live frugally and within your means, set aside some cash for savings in a 401k. Don't fucking use credit cards unless you're in an emergency. Work hard so you can accumulate wealth, explore small business ideas when you can... multiple sources of revenue are better than one. Then you can be the kind of success that liberals complain about because they cant do fourth grade level math and maintain a fucking budget.

>>127605329

I know you're some millennial LARPing as a boomer, but fuck you and fuck boomers.

My wife and I bought our house in 2009 after the downturn had just about bottomed out. We bought for $190K, which in my opinion was still a bit too much for what the house is really worth. When it originally sold in 2006 it was over $500K. Now dumb boomer scum are inflating the market AGAIN making home ownership for anyone not a boomer almost impossible.

I can't wait for the boomer tears when the housing market falls out again. They have this weird philosophy that infinite growth is not only obtainable, but should be the norm so long as it benefits them.

It's actually tough to save enough money for a home for most people. I got into my place at basically the cut off date. Two years after buying a brand new condo for $459,000 it is now worth $675,000. Consider being a person making less than a hundred grand per year like most people... Not only is that price very difficult to pay for most, it impossible for a huge chunk of others and then two years later the price jumps by two hundred thousand bucks. You just got priced out of a place while you were saving.

Say you set a goal to save a ten percent down payment on a $400k home in two years. Two years pass and now the home is $600k. Shit, you need another twenty thousand... Okay, I'll just save for another year... Now the place is worth a million and you are fucked.

I know a guy at work that makes $180k per year that has been saving money and betting on the house market to crash any day now... The amount he has saved has not kept up with the market and now he is fucked.

Millennial punks are having a hard time because the market is running away from them and the economy is shit. If I was able to buy a house ten years ago, I'd be fucking laughing. These guys are in the same position I was in then.

Nobody saves, because we have a consumer society. The whole thing runs on people buying shit. If everyone started saving money, the whole thing would fall apart, fast.

But, I opted out. There's too many consumers to worry that it will change anytime soon.

I live in an area (SF) where I will never find a mortgage that's cheaper than renting, so I pay rent. It's fine. I get a lot of convenience from not having a house to take care of, and fill with useless shit.
I live simply, uncluttered, and I don't buy useless shit. I have 4 plates, forks, spoons, etc. I buy fresh food, and cook every night. I pirate movies and books and magazines, and everything is on hard drives - no shelves of books and clutter. When I buy stuff, I research it and buy quality, for things like appliances. I buy generic for cleaning supplies. I don't gamble, I don't drink, I don't do drugs, and my only debt is my car, which is paid off in 6 months - then that cash will be invested every month. I have high six figures in investments, and a solid 401k. I don't waste money on cruises or concerts or toys. I can pack my place up in less than a day. I work out at home. I'm stress free, and sleep really well. I'm not trying to impress anyone, I just hate clutter and mindless spending. I'm giving up on dating, so why bother decorating for sport fucking on Tinder? Most of the time they host anyway, my current crop for success is bored divorcees in the suburbs. I have credit cards, and rarely use them, and my credit score is in the high 700's.

Learn to budget. Research what you buy. Think about what you buy - do you really need it? Do your budget, make a spreadsheet, put EVERY purchase on it in a month. Add up the useless, mindless shit, the $10 online accounts you never use, the gym you never go to, and you can clear up a couple hundred a month, easy. If you're throwing money away on late fees and bounced check fees and interest, you're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>127605329
desu I did this for 5-years saved 120k and put 70k down on a house.

Housing prices changed from Boomer time because interest rates did. Lower rates = higher prices. People don't look at the total cost of the mortgage they look at the monthly payments and compare it to rent. So the Banking Joos figured out they could make significantly more money off lower interest rates.
>>
>>127605329

I only buy books and comics that's because I can find them cheap. I know how to live within my means and don't waste my shit on pointless things like a phone which has everything I can do for free on my computer.

Housing prices have been artificially raised, because if housing tanks, the whole economy goes with them. They're investment vehicles now. They've kept the ball in the air this far, and they're intent on keeping it going, until a crash comes from influences beyond their control. Just like last time, before the crash.

The boomers are not the ones that suffer. The people who really get screwed are the entry level, first-time buyers.

It will be a while before it bottoms that hard again, but it will eventually. Depends on what part of the country you're in.

You can rent a house in Hounslow for cheap-ish, picadilly is really close by. It's worked for me so far, and nice employers give you travelcards or Oysters

I live an incredibly frugal lifestyle and manage to save £700 a month after rent and groceries, which is a pretty good amount. Is it even worth it though? How much benefit will I get out of that in the future? I still won't be able to afford a nice house (>£1m) until I'm 40 at least - everything seems to be done on inherited wealth at the moment. For the last 2 weeks I experimented with spending like a normie, and I enjoyed myself a lot more desu and felt less depressed.

I lived on about 1,000 a month in my own place for a long time. Had a one bedroom for $650. Most of my meals were canned chili, or refried beans to make a bean and cheese burrito.

You can actually get a phone plan that's between 20 and 30 bucks if you are willing to make some sacrifices. I usually bought most of my cloths at thrift stores at the time as well.

These days I live on about 3k a month, but my house mortgage is 1500 and utilities are higher, so disposable income wise, I'm close to the same point.

Nah I still save a little. Utilities on house can be a bit brutal since they are not based on use a lot of the time. Mortgage and utilities maybe 1700 or so. Gas and monthly parking is like 300. Sadly I got a job where there is no parking other than that which you have to pay for and it's rapage. Spare money beyond that I take a few community college classes here and there to learn new job related skills to stay current. Jobs and houses have a lot of small hidden cost. I probably have to spend about 1k on repairing one of the fences.

I dont post alot. You should read this.

I am a gen x. It took fifteen years to save my down payment.
I always said if you want to make money, go where no one else will go, do what no one else will do.
For me, with a high school diploma, and a dad who wouldn't give me a penny, no skills it took a long time.
I started working in forestry, planting trees, some seasons as far north as alaska.
It was a brutal existence, pissing rain, slogging uphill, with 30 to 60 pounds of seedlings, freezing cold, in some muddy shithole.
This was in north coastal terrain, the worst terrain.
But i lived in bush camps, 6 to 10 months a year, didnt pay rent, food provided. I did this for 7 years, the work slowly improved, to brushing contracts, to running chokers, to firefighting.
Firefighting was great pay. In winters I always found a job as a labourer, rented a cheap room in city, and didnt blow my cash.
One winter I worked in a coal mine (Tumbler ridge pop=1500 lost souls)
Just save save save.
The construction jobs eventually got me into carpentry. After nearly a decade I had enough shit and skills to start my own contracting company.
I bought an old beater house, and in last five years have added 160000$ in assessed value to my property.

Btw the treeplanting turned me into a fucking awesome mountaineer by the time I was 30, going uphill through all kinds of hell with a pack was second nature by then, I climbed TWO 10000 foot mountains in a single day, with my brother, in 2001, got the photos to prove it, best ever day. Coastal treeplanting will turn you into a fucking climbing machine!

YOU CAN DO IT! YOU GOT TO GET HARD!!
I know its tough, but put your head down and GO!
I been through hell, bears, bugs, horsefly that flew right down my throat. One morning I was planting on what I thought was stable earth and it gave way, I fell into an underground river.... not fucking kidding, I was hanging onto a tree root and my partner (a little blond girl I called "smiley",

The key to climbing out of poverty is to ask yourself these questions.

1.Do i need it?
2.Does it need to be new?
3.Here can i get it the cheapest? / Try to bid lower than the actual price
4. How long will it last in contrary with how long it should function properly? (Cheap-mid-high price catagory)

The wealthy are just that; because they learn to spend less on more.

You are looking at $1200 at least for some with low enough input lag for video games and HDR compatibility. 4k is a meme, but HDR isn't.

I have the Samsung KS8000, I got it earlier this year when it was being discontinued and it was getting priced slashed. Its amazing. but its discontinued now. That's when you gotta get into it, when new models are coming out. The KS9000 is the successor.

More importantly, why save if there is nothing to save for? What am I going to do with 12k extra in the bank other than feel it drop drastically in value when the next crash comes?

It almost makes me think that this is a push to get more to invest even though we already know that leads to nothing but a larger and weaker bubble ready to pop.

Also to my understanding, the highest rate of late-teen suicides are popular kids and not bullied kids. It's funny

This is how you create leeches. If you're kids are done college and stay at home. Make them get a job and say that like 10% of their earning has to be payed as rent. Then ramp it up the longer they stay because you want them to fucking leave

http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/5709/housing/market/

i wish i could find a graph which went back to the 70s

it's really fucked

anyone saying it's possible to save up on anything but an above average wage is retarded

someone earning £18k, which is a reasonable salary for many office jobs, has £1200 per month after taxes

rent = £400, bills if you live cheaply = £600 allowing you to save £200 per month

house prices are appreciating faster than £1200 per year, so you'll literally never be able to buy outright

the average term for a mortgage is now 35 years

If you've noticed there is a correlation between leftism and Millenials who complain about spending habits as OP described. I wonder if it's because they are in denial about their choices in life so they've latched onto leftism as a coping mechanism of some kind. It's pretty deranged when you think about it.

An example:
>I'M IN DEBT FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS BUT MY LIBERAL HUMANITIES PROFESSOR CAN'T BE WRONG THAT THE WHITE MEN ARE EVIL. TAKE MY MONEY! I HOPE I'M MORE TOLERANT BECAUSE OF THIS! LOOK AT MY TATTOO! LOOK AT IT!!!!

Everything else can be done elsewhere. You will be paid slightly less but you will save twice as much. I have no idea why people go after that "dream graduate job" in London when you can make nearly as much in Leeds or Edinburgh with a cost of living roughly half.

They don't get any smarter after 30, only more irrational.
>>
Because even being thrifty as fuck won't save you shit. The avacado toast meme started here, and prices have literally close to doubled in the last 10 years. Even if millenials had $10 a day to cut out of their expenses that's only $3650 a year. Wage stagnation means you have to save 30-40% of your take home income for 3-4 years to even have the chance at scraping by on a deposit, then you're locked into some 30 year bullshit where you're still spending 20-30% annually just to cover it, more if you want to get ahead of interest.

No doubt there are frivolous spenders, but it's nowhere near the majority, and definitely not amongst those complaining about home ownership.

Is there matching now on TSP?

Step #1 every year is max out Roth IRA.

If you have BAH at your next duty station if you have enough service time to use VA loan; buy a multifamily.

You can buy a duplex or triplex and live in one unit rent out the other two. I know guys on the service who bought one property per duty station and are millionaires. 0 down for a rental unit is amazing especially if multiple doors.

If all this is scary and intimidating then just resist the urge to splurge money after maxing Roth put into a stock account and start with index funds.

Once you see it start to grow you won't give a shit about having that brand new car or wasting your money on stupid shit like the rest of the retards.

Godspeed anon.

Roth IRA is separate from the TSP right? Is that through mypay as well or through another website, I saw navyfed had Roth IRA.
So index fund is when they stick my money in a bunch of stocks right? What if the economy tanks from bubbles, I lose the TSP and IRA and funds right?
