I carry either of these. They were cheap as fuck, they have some length and mass to them, and I used and abuse them as my work knife for the last three years and they've held up strong. Not even any side-play in the blades yet. I got the pair at Home Deport for $12 four years ago, and do not at all regret that investment.

Get a knife you'd actually carry. A lot of the alternatives are great if you're wearing jeans, a jacket, or other "heavy" clothing. But as you live in Brazil, I take it that you'll wear a t-shirt and shorts a lot. Thus, I'd recommend a Benchmade 530 or 531 as they're light and thin folding knives with a great blade. Just make sure you get used to their small thumb studs. I love mine, at least.

And, of course, be realistic. I don't know how much you make, but all American, German, or Japanese (even Chinese) knives will be expensive. Whatever you can get your hands on with a blade that lasts, that you will carry, is the best knife. Even if that means a weird knock off from Gabriel deep in the Favela.

I have had nothing but great experiences and uses with mine.Although you are correct about the locking strength, but that can also work to your advantage in some circumstances. Such as hitting a bone and the blade retracting back into the casing instead of getting stuck or chipping off. I don't use my infidel to cut wire, or carve wooden figurines. It is for last case scenarios with precise execution. Also, in it's defense, the Infidel, if broken is an amazingly easy knife to get back into tip top shape and the folded steel keeps an edge without obsessive maintenance very well.

I'd recommend getting one with a 4 inch (10 cm) blade minimum. Try to get a spring-assisted one if you can, you can get the blade out in a faction of the time it would take you with a normal folding knife.

Durning the weekdays when going to and from work i will clip my morakniv 860 to my pocket on the side of my trouser leg.

I dont directly carry a knife for protection i simply carry one as a tool for work to open cardboard boxes and cut insualtion etc.

For my self defense I always carry a common kitchen knife with me, alltogether with a spoon. If I have to "explain it", well, it´s for my lunch ;)

We were issued our Benchmades a few years back. They passed field testing in all environments. Hence the removable casing with a hex bolt and you're good to go. I am not sure why everyone thinks Afghanistan is a desert when it's literally not, yes there are some arid environments there, but it's not a desert. On the contrary the mountains there are some of the prettiest I have ever seen. I never claimed anyone was charging at me, I am totally aware of the CQB pacing rules and chances of actually producing a knife in defense before someone has the upper hand.
