Our problem was that we were totally side swiped by the new laws. We had zero lobby groups in place. Things are looking up as there are more openly pro gun politicians/parties getting elected.
One way to make it easier to get a gun licence is to join a gun group or association. Many people flocked to the Sporting shooters Association. Making it into fairly big pro gun lobby group.

'Proportional force' doesn't care about the weapon used. If you have reasonable belief that your life is in danger, you can use lethal force to respond and protect yourself/another.

It's a fine line you have to dance to prove that there was a legitimate lethal threat but that's technically how it works
