I went to Espana in about 2010 or 2011, I would've been about 14 or 15 at the time, and on my 5th year of studying Spanish. Being a chubby German-American girl with blonde hair/green eyes, I had a wonderful time. I could definitely see where all of the Latin and Hispanic countries get their civilized humanity, and very friendly/home-y feeling. I do remember some Spaniard was absolutely having it when he overheard me mixing Spanish and English every other word.

Our tour guides were all Spaniards, of course. They tried to pull a fast one on the stereotypes of Americans not knowing geography, and I absolutely slaughtered them in amazement.

I remember being in Madrid late at night during a heavy rain. Absolutely fucking weird to see water up to my shins on large, main roads, and cars just driving on through it. I was down near the Hard Rock Cafe, Plaza de Colon, if any of you Spaniards are curious.

Anyways, Spaniards are funny, I absolutely devoured their food no problemo. I think being from the US and visiting castles, the museums, art galleries, were just so astonishing.

Also, for a Catholic country, and being Catholic myself, I was super amazed by the all the PDA I saw.

Also a little bit of trivia. If you go around the country and start seeing chimneys like in pic related(and usually heavy vandalized), just standing there in the middle of cities or literally nowhere, those are not ruins or anything like that, but rather monuments.

You see, industrialization came very late in Spain(started around 200 years after British did), and was a very risky business for almost its entire period but necessary for the progress of the country(so any industrialist should be considered a hero just for that), and even after the industrialization started it wasn't only in Franco's times when we can say that effective, distributed industrialization happened.

So, in honor of those risky factories that propelled the country foward, their chimneys are considered monuments and literally protected by the government in the sense that if one chimney is damaged or destroyed, the government is compelled by law to restore it back like it was before.

And so, they are simply there saying "here was a factory" as a symbol of those hard times for Spain.
