Yeah usually they have memberships for people who have way too much money or businesses like garages that have customers that come out onto track days.

you shouldn't let a flat F1 track stop you though, these f1 shots were all taken from the spectator areas of the melbourne gp track, which is very flat, and is lined entirely with catch fencing

on a cloudy day, a long or fast (preferably both) tele lens should make short work of the catch fencing, I've found that you mostly have to stick to your centre AF point if you want any kind of consistent accurate AF though

Rent a telephoto. I don't know the Glen very well, but I'm guessing since it's an older track, a 70-200 would be fine, no need for an 80-400. Pick up a 1.4x if you're worried about it, or spend that money on a polarizer instead. They're usually $20 or so to rent for either one.

Don't forget to run through the paddock area. The support races sometimes let you get up close to the good stuff too, since they sometimes don't have security fences.

Learn to pan like your picture. Research where to shoot from, what backgrounds and angles you can expect, where the light is coming from, and what the weather will be.

there are concessions but only a few with a very limited selection. but do try a "glen dog" just to say you did it. there's a hot dog eating contest fri night after ontrack stuff is done

there are roped off parking areas for infield parkers. you can drive between them to park & then walk the fence.

i dont blame your dad for not camping. i got my fill of rv generators running all night beside my head. i've been renting houses by the lake the last few years.

i still get a campsite at the track though. it's around the 300 marker heading into the bus stop chicane. if you spot a white kia sorento, say hi.

don't forget to get pics of the vettes during our super racy parade laps. me at detroit a few weeks ago.

Rent a 100-400 for lots of focal range in a quality and relatively light package. A 200-500/150-600 if your penis is tiny.

Don't forget to check out the support races. Their paddocks tend to be more open too. And if you have a weekend pass, make sure to go for practice and quali. There's a lot less people in the way, and you can get familiar with the track.

Plastic bags. Thick PE if you can find it. Make rain covers for your camera and bag. Remember to make it big enough to cover any telescoping your lens will do, and the mouth is big enough to stick your head. Cut a hole in the other end and tape it to the lens hood. Make sure everything is good, doubly so if you're renting.

Bring a microfiber cloth to wipe the front element and eyepiece with. Try to keep it dry.

I hope you've got waxed boots and some goretex or similar. Dont wear cotton pants if you can help it.

Bring a thermos of something hot. The hands always get cold.

Remember to enjoy the comfy sounds of stead rain and race cars.

I've got a big box of these huge ziploc bags that I bought, if I'm going to be shooting on a day where it looks like it could rain, I cut the appropriate holes in each bag, (I cut a hole for the viewfinder and wedge it in place with the eyecup) and gaff tape it all to seal it

Went a bit crazy with burst mode, but this is from a rally I went to last weekend. I'd say normally over a weekend event I'd get between 2000-4000 images and being super picky reduce that down to somewhere in the 50-200 range, with around half those being my top tier shots (I've a thing about getting a shot of every car so that somewhat inflates my final keeper count).

About the same. I shot 1400 photos, kept about 100 for the people at the track day, I consider only about 12 to be actually good, and one I sold to a magazine.

It's fairly normal in sports photography. Don't be worried about your keeper rate, only that you got the shot (or not). To come away with something worthy of print is the ultimate goal of any photoshoot.

Could be worse, you could be shooting with a TLR on 120 film.

walk around a lot, don't stay confined to the same area if possible

for pans, start off at around 1/250-1/125s, depending on your focal length, use your af point to aim at a certain part on the car, and try to follow it the best you can

howdy, will be attending imsa weathertech/michelin gt at vir next month, has anyone ever attended a race there? it seems theyre strict with photo passes and i doubt ill get one because im a hobbyist but im applying anyway, and its also the first race of any kind ive ever attended save for 2013 coke 600 (lol) what do i need to know besides the find people connections/pack snacks and a polarizer lol

I haven't been there but will I be going but here's some stuff:

It'll be an open paddock with really good access to everything, plenty of chances to get something good there.

Play with angles and different ideas, look for spots others might not think of.

Try talking to some of the pro photographers, learn some stuff, a lot of them are willing to have a chat.

Bring a really long lens, like a 400mm or something, renting a lens for the day/weekend is generally pretty affordable, like $30. From photos it looks like the track is pretty far away from the spectator areas so the long lens is more important compared to some other tracks like Watkins Glen or long beach where you can get really close.

Your best opportunities for photos will be during practice sessions but qualifying and the race are also good.

For panning you'll want to get to shutter speeds slower than 1/100th although your keeper rate will go way down the slower you shoot. It take a lot of practice to get it right.

You might want to bring a handheld radio and some ear defenders with an aux input so you can listen to the IMSA radio broadcast

Bring snacks. Have fun.
