Used to work at goodwill, I can confirm that at least for goodwill, our sorting/donation process damages the majority of goods given to us, these things are basically thrown into huge fucking bins with other electronics and are thrown around a few times before they get priced and put on the sales floor
Also our quality inspection managers at goodwill had a list of brands for cameras that weren't allowed to go on the sales floor, and would instead be sold on the Goodwill's eBay page.

Once I learned this, I stopped ever going there. Part of the draw of thrift stores is finding a super deal. Nite that they all but guarantee I won't, there's no point in me going.

You wouldn't say the same thing comparing a 50mm 1.4 to a 50mm 3.5 would you? 2+ stops slower (at f4) is a pretty big difference.

What's the deal with no flash control. Does it fire everytime or only in low light?
From what I read it switches to auto everytime you open the camera, but then you can turn it off.
I want this camera but it the flash is going to fire everytime I shoot then idk...
>>2958418
Probably only in low light but most point and shoots are extremely liberal with their flashes, it'll flash in pretty bright situations (like a slightly backlit subject or a well lit room) I've heard there's a way to hack the camera to disable flash so I'd take that approach

Did you ever attach a yellow filter to the L35AF to shoot B&W? It's one of those cool features I never knew existed for a P&S.
Also you should dick around with a zoom P&S, theres literally hundreds of them lying around for less then $10 a pop. Pick your favorite brand and see how it works out for you.

I've found it a lovely camera to use. It pretty sharp if you nail focus, but because of the three-point focus system and no auto, I found it a little tricky to get used to. (also means its not a true blood P&S)
Shooting in the day is great because it's so damn small and pocketable
Shooting at night means you have to screw in the attachable flash which essentially adds another third to its size, but it's damn powerful. You get a whole lot of bounce.
The shutter is very sensitive. I've had many accidental exposures. However, it means that there's no fear of shake when shooting.
All in all it's a solid 7/10 for me. Good but flawed.
>>2957039

lmao
anybody have experience/familiarity with the Yashica impression plus? copped one for super cheap and im wondering if the lens quality etc are worth putting up with the impossible-to-disable fill flash on every fucking shot... i do like the little features it has (like diopter adjustment) that make it feel more high end but in the end it comes down to the pictures it makes I guess.
Might be getting a low-end P&S from my grandmother.
You think TRI-X 400 would produce decent results even in a shitty P&S? I like high contrast B&W photos and it's my understanding TRI-X 400 has high contrast. This would be developed at a basic lab with no specific instructions.
>>2966601
Depends on the lens in the camera really. You can make great photos with any camera.
You can quite easily develop your own film, B&W is very easily to develop yourself. You'll save money and you can make adjustments in development to affect contrast and sharpness and whatnot.
>>2966601
tx CAN be a high contrast film but it's not going to produce the kind of results you're looking for if you shoot it full auto then drop it off at the lab without even asking for any particular processing preferences. i shoot tx and use it to make quite contrasty, grainy prints but i go through a whole battery of techniques from exposure to processing to printing (all of which I do myself without an outside lab, btw).

>>2968045
honestly i havent used that camera in 15 years and i knew literally nothing about photography or cameras when i did use it.
i'm just starting getting into developing my own film and going to start using it again.
>>2968036
Most lense designs, and especially simple ones, small enough to go into a compact camera, require the lense to be about as far away from the film as the focal length at infinity focus, and to focus closer than that need to go further away again. So to avoid making the camera prohibitively thicc, or to avoid having it telescope out excessively like the flimsy epeen on shitty consumer zooms like >>2968039 every time you turn it on, enthusiast compacts with prime lenses are all around the 24-40mm range.
The best tele "compact" you're like to find is pic related, but they're not very compact at all, and fucking expensive.
>>2968036
A wide lens is a lot more useful for general use and casual snapshitting. It's easier to use for a casual user, accurate focus is less critical, there's less camera shake, you can just drunkenly aim it in the direction of what you want to shoot and it'll still be in the frame. Remember that most of these cameras weren't designed for skinny hipsters to make retro vintage art photography, they were for your mom to take vacation snaps or photos of your second birthday party.
Also like the other anon mentioned, a lens with a shorter focal length will be physically shorter (except for retrofocus designs but compacts don't use those designs anyway). Also a shorter focal length lens will have a smaller diameter than a longer focal length of the same aperture, so a longer lens would either be slower or bigger and heavier with a lot more glass.

Thanks. It's really too bad the shutter stopped working, the Industar 95 seemed to be pretty sharp and I really prefer to have manual focus because Hi-Matic AF's unreliable focusing is the one thing I really hate about it. The camera had old batteries blown up inside of it which I managed to coax out, but I guess the contacts are too oxidized and it gives unstable voltage to the primitive exposure system.
Oh well, these things seem to be cheaper than dirt on Ebay, might grab me a new one when I have a little extra pocket money.

I got mine for 40€ so the £150 is overpriced imo.
Got the Mju II also, which cost me 10€.
My Mju II has light leaks that show up identically in every photo. I've researched around, and it looks like the seal around the lens assembly has degraded, causing light to leak in the front of the camera. Any way to fix this, or is my baby dead?
>>2974132
That'd be tough since the lens moves. Mine currently has film in it so I can't open and look, but try opening the back and aim the camera at a bright ass light. try to see where the light is coming through. If you can find the source try to patch it up from the inside with something.

Shame about the scanlines - this shot is actually mildly thought provoking.
>>2956102
Without correcting your distortion this shot loses its power to present leading lines and contrasting shapes. It becomes a shot of nothing.
>>2956107
Could be a good tilt shift shot - but if youre reporting a current event you wanna get closer.

Blurry people crossing a street halfway down a shot. Stop shooting from head height ! Boring as fuck !
>>2956163
Bush. Stop wasting TriX on a bush! Get that shit used on portraits!
>>2957433
This is acceptable - alien environment - good thought put into framing - main subjects too central, but not bad at all.
>>2960640
Feels Wes Anderson. Thats good.

>'member me, guys? hah good old classic /p/, i was here too :-)
>>2974505
photography's not a zero sum game, Steve McCurry isn't going dry because someone on /p/ took cat pics on a fucking p&s. Let people be people/be glad that film is getting bought in the first place

i was starting to think i was the weird one! most of those shots where meaningless
Leica Minilux. Ruined the photo by cutting off the top, but I love the colours.

I agree with your critiques, but complaining about people 'wasting' film is dumb dumb dumb. The more people buying film, the better.

Is that the CN tower, haven't travelled there in ages. It was quite the view.
>>2974690
Which film did you use? Nice colours indeed.
>>2975610
Love how dark the picture is on the upper right.
Adds a surreal touch to the picture,
like the the people on the segway are passing by a film set.

My versions autofocus is fucked.. i learnt that after shooting two rolls on it.. it seems like it refuses to focus on anything else than humans. (except that plant) tho im pretty sure thats just because the subjects are closer. ive yet to take a picture of a person that is as oof as everything else ive shot with it..
im pretty happy with the pictures that is in focus, theyre almost always exposed well as long as youre not pushing it beyond whats reasonable.. im gonna mail a relative that i know have another of them stewing in some closet somewhere and see if that one works better.
>>2974477
not bad but theyre not great either

Meh' gave it my best shot. I'm new overall. Thanks for the feedback.

I love shooting modern shit with film, the more advanced the better. I love the contradiction created between old and new technology, does that make sense? It's like seeing the future through the lens of the past.

>>2976469
T3 lens is better than the T4/5 but the autofocus isn't as accurate.
>>2976525
I understand the concept but I honestly don't like to do it, if I want to shoot an old camera I'll probably shoot old stuff because they really compliment each other
>>2967735
WITH DARKNESS AND SILENCE THROUGH THE NIGHT
just bought this, any opionions?
(not my photo)
>>2976525
haha so ironic
>>2976525
I can kind of see what you're saying. For me, a lot of old subjects appear old in photos partly because of the camera they were shot on, and the wear and tear on the print, so its a bit strange seeing things I witnessed only a few months ago through these lenses.
>>2977420
it's shit probably
no autofocus because lens is fixed
it's basically a refillable disposable
doesn't mean you can't make good images but your toolset is limited
>>2977643
thanks, its actually the kind of thing i'm looking for, i already own a rangefinder for good photos, I just want someting i can carry around and be a bit careless
