This is the first time I've shot this building and I've wanted to for a while. My longest lens is a 50mm on crop and I could get much better angles if I didn't have to stand so close

I'll have to re-shoot these when I have a lens more suited for it

Also I did bring down the contrast a tad to add to the washed out-ness so I'll probably work on that too

I see, I'll adress that. Unlike the sky, the crane was very poorly lit. There's hardly any light, which is why reflections got more emphasis. The mentioned pushed sharpness is contrast given by reflections from the light on the right, which is missing for the bottom part of the crane. I darkened the sky too, which may increase this look. Also I backfocused the building, I guess.

Not that guy, but it's a fine photo, it is in sharp focus and the B&W works, I dont like B&W for the sake of it though. The subject however is not good. Why is he wearing a hat and sunglasses indoors? It's obviously staged, I'd rather see a candid portrait. i usually just use simple instructions like, Stand/sit there, look over at that, lean a bit back.

imo the photographers job is to get the best light, make sure it hits the face the right way, get the composition right, set the person youre photographing at ease, and let the subject project themselves the way they want to. Its important to talk to them all the time, lest they become self conscious.

this works for only a certain type of portraits ofc.

yeah, clear instructions helps, but in my experience too strict posing makes the photo seem ..posed, esp, when the subjects arent experienced..

Theres tonnes of youtube videos on posing though, just search for it. theres probably lots of good tips to gather there..
