The first photo might express exactly that.
I like neither of both shots aesthetically and I give them the garbage stamp. In the second, I'd find an obvious relation between the woman and the child funny, just as the child is veiled by the framing.

There's movement, Without this it would be a loss! Without flash, the person would be blurred, probably a loss too. I have no idea how to improve the execution. Of course a moving ground would be better, but how'd you do that? Is it enough to direct the flashgun upwards? I don't think so.

If you shot lower you could get more landscape in there, the water would be a nice foreground element but I don't think it's particularly interesting enough to be worth the full frame.

Very nice, the blown whites are unfortunate though. Too bad the Coolpix P900 doesn't have raw so shooting underexposed to compensate will come with drawbacks, namely loss of shadow detail due to 8bit output.
Things like no raw output are why I absolutely loathe the concept of a beginner's camera, just arbitrarily gimping a learning photographer's equipment. People should get a used digital from a few years ago to learn with, or for their kids, instead of something they'd absolutely have to ditch after a few months.

Pick a subject before you shoot, and try to think, if you put the picture on a transparent slide, and you put it in a slide projector, and you forced a group of your friends and family to sit in a darkened room while you show them the slides projected on a wall, would they die to death of boredom or would they have something interesting or funny to look at?

You may not have dehaze in Photoshop CS6 but you should be able to cure a bit with curves, even if you just use the extended auto options under curve's options menu if you were having trouble with it.
