This is the Film General Thread, aka FGT.
This is the thread where you can post your film snapshits without flushing them down the Recent Photo Toilet.
>just posting in the FGT doesn't make you gay, unless you shoot in-date pro films that have been cold stored
It is ok to ask about film gear in this thread.

I have a problem with Olympus mju ii:
All sensors are working, all the lights, too, but when I insert the film, the error appears. What could be the problem?
>>2936694
Fuck you my house gets hot af during the day I throw all film in da fridge
>>2936712
Do you mean it tries winding for awhile, stops, and then flashes E on the screen? Is this your first time using the camera or have you loaded film into it before no problem? Make sure it catches into the film advance prior to shutting the door.
What film is it? I dunno if it can do non-FF coded film in case that's what you're using.
>>2936766
Ugh, autocorrect. Meant non DX coded film...
My Minolta x700, quite regularly, refuses to turn on when I flip the switch. I have to have it on for about 6-7minutes before the LEDs start working, almost like it needs time to warm up. Any ideas?
>>2936766
If be honest, I don't know. Some guy selling it for $8 and I dont know buy it or not. Now I ask him about all stuff
how do you calculate dilution? like 1+1 or 1+4? Are there any app to do this? Im so bad at math.
>>2936832
Don't pursue photography. There might be numbers involved.
>like 1+1
Not everyone had/enjoyed chemistry at school and it's simple to explain but with the examples you gave you are either trolling or a hopeless case.
>>2936832
1+1 = 1 part undiluted developer(or whatever you are mixing) and 1 part water
so say you need 500ml to cover your roll of film in your tank, (should say how much ml you need for the tank), then you do 500ml / 2 and get 250ml undiluted developer and 250ml water.
with 1+4 it works the same, so if you need 500ml divide that by 5 parts (1+4) and you get 100ml, so 100ml developer and 400ml water.
most of the time it should say on the bottle how to prepare it.

European film shooters, where do you usually buy or order your films from? I'm assuming most of you are buying in bulk? I know Amazon.co.uk has a pretty big selection but are there some other good options?

First roll devloped.
Russian scale focusing plastic cheap piece of crap Camera.
Had a hard time getting the rewind to work so I opened it under two duvets with the lights off.
Is it a light leak in the camera ? Or do you guys think it's from the opening ?
Apart from that I was quite surprised at how sharp some of the pictures came out.
It was kodax iso 200 pharmacy crap.
Local shops sells 2 rolls of it with 35 exposures for €2.50.

Looks like a leak on the back, the pressure plate should hold it in place. If the top parts are out of focus too then it could be that. Kind of hard to tell with an Irish scan though.

If you can spot meter, I would use that or learn where the meter usually covers. Chances are you'll be fine unless it's a very contrasty scene though. My xpan meter can usually guess it about right 9 times out of 10.

That's generally how lenses work m80, you stop em down a little and they're usually at their sharpest.

Use it in manual and expose according to the guide number. I've used the A11 on my XA like that when shooting 800 speed film or when I want to use a different aperture.
The XA flash is something I feel Maitani dropped the ball with. It ruins the ergonomics and looks ugly.

Alright so I got a few rolls of Hungarian 35mm forte film (50 ISO), expired in 1992 that I shot with an auto exposure compact film. My question is: How do I develop this? I can't find any info on the times or anything online so I'm just gonna aim for Ilford 50 as a measurement. However, since the film expired almost 25 years ago, I am thinking that I will need longer developer times, is that correct?

Under exposed? They would be 2 stops overexposed with 1600 film right?
Opinions on the Kiev 60? Got to try one when I was shooting the shit with a guy about MF gear and I mentioned I'm GASsing for a Pentacks 6x7. He brought out a Kiev 60 with an eye level WF and said that he had had the Pentax but it was a boring camera, and this Kiev with Zeiss Jenas had served him a lot better. It felt pretty good in the hand so now I'm curious.
>>2938060
Yeah rule of thumb is it looses about half its iso sensitivity after a couple of years.
Unless it was refrigerated it might be a goner and the Hungarians were a soviet bloc country In the 80's so I say the film is about the same quality as Soviet film. Witch wasn't great

Kievs are the Trabant of medium format. That's to say: you'd best learn to repair them yourself, which is nontrivial to say the least. Things like brass gears becoming stripped and needing replacement.
Also, Kievs smell. Like a lot. And there's light leaks out the arse, which is par for the course for any old MF camera, but still super aggravating.
If at all possible, go for a Bronica S series with the steel gears. Those will both last, and likely be in a working order when you lay your mitts on 'em.
I'm hopefully going to shoot some paid portraits soon with my rz67. What price would be a good jumping off point? I'm thinking of $10 for a print and $5 for a scan. Is there any poses I should look into for people wearing full suits of plate armor?

I've also got plenty of experience with FSU gear, but nothing, _nothing_ could prepare me for the SMELL. It's like they made the glue that holds the leatherette in place out of cabbage, and so every Kiev owner is now haunted by ghosts of pureed cabbage concentrate of the nineteen-seventies.
Consider that this is gear that you put your face up to, to use the waist-level finder, for proper focusing. The smell will linger up your nose for days after you've put the camera away. It's not moth balls, it's not grease, it's not oil, it's something infinitely more sinister.

Assuming you mean a patterson tank? You still need to load the film on the reel in total darkness. Whether you get that from sealing off a room or buying a changing bag is your guess. If you bought all the equipment and chemicals new, that would be ~80$, not to mention getting a scanning solution together if you don't already have one. You can weigh the cost.
Bought my first medium format tlr in pic related. What's some good 120 film to start off on?

Kodachrome - you can sometimes find rolls for sale on eBay, and nothing beats those colours.
>>2939368
For me, I always use HP5 pushed up to 1600 in low light or stick with tripod and FP4/PanF for medium format.
I either go really slow or fast and not in between, but when I have used HP5@400 I always got good results.
>>2939267
For slow bw, Acros is the best imo.
For color negative give Ektar, Portra, and 400H a try.
For slide try Provia 100F.
For fun go on eBay and buy a lot of random film. Lots of great films out there that are no longer produced but fantastic to shoot (e100vs, Portra VC, Portra NC, neopan 400, Astia 100F, etc.)
Just took this. Tried my hand at the Zone system. Boy did I fuck that up. Whatever I chose as Zone 0 was wayyyy too dark.

Where do you guys cop your film online? eBay? I want to shoot a roll of Portra but I can't get Kodak locally.
>>2940593
Buying single rolls is really not that financially great once you factor in shipping and potential savings from buying pro-packs. In addition to ebay, some good sites that sell fresh film include:
Bhphotovideo.com
Freestylephoto.biz
Ultrafineonline.com
Amazon.com

Remember the thread about Acros 100 being discontinued in 35mm format? I went to my usual shop today to buy some film and they told me they are out of stock of Acros 100. Some online shops still have it - for literally twice the usual price.
Is this the end? ;_;

Tfw I got 20+ 120 rolls of acrid off a dude last year.
Hey guys, just found this little dude in a charity shop going for £20. This is my first film camera and was wondering if there is anything I should do before I go out and take some snaps. The only thing I can see wrong with it is a slight crack in the top of the flash housing.
>>2940678

its baerly worth 20 quid.
plastic af slr from the early 2000's i bet.
clean the mirror with a mircofibre cloth and compressed air if you have it.
apart from that i bet it would work grand.
>>2940669
120 and sheet film seems to be still available everywhere, although the question is how much longer they're gonna keep it that way if it really turns out that they have stopped the production of 135.
>>2940679
Thanks for the quick reply, yeah the mirror looks spotless from what I can tell but I'll double check it. Yeah but as a student I got too much money laying about, currently saving for a dslr, thought I would try film in the meantime.
>>2940678
Just got some fresh batteries, but the stores around here are out of 35mm film so gonna hopefully grab some at uni tomorrow. Just gotta get used to these buttons and whatever the hell they are doing. Anyone got a crib sheet or maybe an instruction manual for this camera? Also as it is an A mount lens are there any other interesting lenses to put on this?
>>2940366
what lens has yuck pentagonal bokeh
>>2940833
Most Hasselblad lenses, for one.
>>2940786
Here's the instructions for the first roll:
Open rear door, drop in roll of film, stretch film leader to red dot, close door, turn power on, press "P" button, aim, compose, and press shutter button. Get roll developed. If the roll comes out ok, download the manual to learn about other advanced/manual controls.
The lower end maxxum bodies didn't stand the test of time very well if stored poorly. If you like the Maxxum cameras, save up for a Maxxum/Dynax 7. It is godly.
And yes, Maxxums take a-mount lenses. All a-mount lenses will fit, but only the screw drive lenses will be able to focus. The exception being the Maxxum 5, 7, and some 9's, can drive the newer style lenses.
>>2940664
Probably not. Sometimes stocks run low in areas. You'll notice the price of Portra/Tri-X rises steeply in Europe sometimes only for the price to fall back down to normal after a couple of months when stocks have been replenished.
>>2940848
Seemingly the camera is always on whilst the batteries are in. After opening and closing the door it auto reels the film, which makes sense as the only time you'd open it up would be to change film.
Thank you for the information about the lenses. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to use the autofocus on any other lenses but the one it came with, which I am fine with as I plan on doing portraits and the sort and get down with manual controls.
>>2940836

Most earlier canon EF glass too, I think. I like the 50/1.8, 24/2.8, 28/2.8, 35/2. Often the choice will hinge on how much mechanical effort the engineers want to devote to stopping down the lense, more than anything else.

>>2940861
The upper lcd stays on always. The info in the viewfinder should only be on with the power switched on. It will load the film with the power off.
>>2940941
Let's see, my Maxxum has a window in the back to see the roll, and the frame counter doesnt change when firing shutter. All of my manual 35mm's the rewind knob spins when winding film, plus you can feel a difference in winding resistance. RB67 will wind without stopping without film loaded, plus winding resistance feel. 4x5, I've double exposed, but never forgot to load the holders. Sorry anon, never experienced this.

Learn to spin rewind knob clockwise when in doubt. If it gets tight=film loaded. If it spins free=film not loaded. Also, get a minolta....they have a red flag that shows when the film is properly loaded.

In thinking of getting one of the Plustek 8000 range. They're meant to be the best if you're only doing 35mm.
Flatbeds add more versatile as you can also do 120/large format but quality isn't as good for 35mm.
>>2942786
>>2942796
I sold off my 8100 for an XA and haven't looked back. They're both acceptable scanners but the latter offers slightly better resolution and can save you heaps of time. Filmscanner.info pretty much sums up my experience under their filmscanner tests page. (Look for "Reflecta RPS 10M" for results on the XA)
Dipshit here.
Why you should obviously make sure your focus screen is put back with the frost facing proper direction. If you absolutely have to remove it for some reason.

thats for one roll of 36exp
so far this is the cheapest.. i got it from this seller.

Ultramax is fairly decent, especially if a bit expired by a few years or baked, exposed maybe a stop over.
Finally back into self developing after an 18 month hiatus. Wet negz.

BTW, would you recommend that chinese Lucky film?
>>2942971
I used a wetting agent. I snapped that photo right after hanging the film.
>>2942972
Dunno yet, haven't had a chance to look at the negs yet since they are still wet. It looks nice from a distance, especially considering I took an educated guess on its developing time in Fuji Microfine.
3 rolls of Acros and that roll of Lucky drying now.
how much money do you guys save from developing and scanning your own film? Also will it save even more money with bulk loading films?
>>2942981
I bought enough developer to develop 16 rolls of film. It was cheaper than getting 1 roll developed at a lab. To break down my costs since I just bought dev gear:
>$60 for a tank and 2 reels
>$10 for bucket, measuring cup, thermometer
>$10 for bottle of fixer that should last 30+ rolls
>$8 for powder developer that can developer 16 rolls
If I stick with this dev/fixer combo it will cost me $30 to develop ~30 rolls of black and white film.
Scanning yourself may be even more cost effective, since the majority of labs seem to charge $10+/roll for pretty shittastic scans.
>>2942981
Scanning is 7€ up here. So if a scanner costs about 250€, it takes about 36 rolls to pay for itself. For me that happened earlier this year. Also, output is hirez TIFFs or w/e on your RAID array, instead of generically post-processed JPEGs on a CD.
Development is another 7€/roll regardless of format and chemistry, and for large format it's 3€/sheet. For black and white with HC-110 dil. B (~10ml/roll) you get 100 rolls out of a one-liter bottle which costs about 30€ from maco, so it's 0.30€/roll to dev. Fixer is a bit more expensive per roll esp. given that 1+4 rapid fixer spoils in 3-4 months, but we can still count about a 6€ savings. For C-41 it's exactly 0.54€ per roll (compard digibase kit, 5l = 100 rolls for 53-ish yurobucks). Also, you can play funny development games like push/pull development, semi-stand, and what-not; and it's quicker and a fun part of the hobby. This pays for itself slower, in terms of euro per roll, than scanning.
Bulk rolling is the easiest question. Generally cheap film costs under 3€/roll of 36, and expensive film costs around 4€/roll of 36, in bulk, bought 30m (~18 rolls) at a time. This makes for a savings of 2-3€/roll, so with a daylight loader costing up to 120€ (or next to nothing if bought used), this is the slowest thing to pay for itself.
Each of these steps gives you more control, and more stuff to do. So for /fgt/, except mf and lf people, each step is almost a necessity even if it weren't also a cost savings.

why on this board, in this thread of all places?
There's always a kik thread up on /soc/, try it over there
>tfw bought all the equipment and chemistry for self-developing but can't work up the courage to try it because I will fuck up the first dozen rolls
>>2943008
Over simplified, arrogant (it's 2016!) and blatantly wrong on some parts but he is correct that processing and exposing film for scanning and traditional printing are two different animals.
As for zone system, he's simply much more interested in hard contrast, and you could modify how you consider the zones. With film it's always better to overexpose a little if anything.
>>2943012
B&W or C41? Either way, just go for it. When I started out with film developing (C41), I only messed up 1 out of 8 rolls and that was as a total beginner. With B&W it's even harder to fuck up unless you somehow open the tank before the film finished developing or somethin
>>2943019
I just mixed up the developer (ID11) and got these flakes in the solution, did I dun goofed?

loadsa money.
I'd rather process my own B/W even with Rodinal than give it to a lab. Every B/W roll I ever had processed by someone else always came back worse than I could do myself. Though I still get 35mm C-41 processed at ASDA when I can be bothered to get it in colour.
While the scanners where a high entry cost, It pays off in the long run to be able to scan my own stuff. There's no issues with weird crops or auto settings when you do it yourself. I also don't have to pay ridiculous rates to get xpan/pano/120 scans.
I mostly shoot Delta 400, so bulk loading works for me, I can get 30.5M for less than I can get roll packs. It also gives me the flexibility to load less frames.
>>2943107
are they just on the bottom? Might just be part of the powder that didn't dilute properly
Will TSA scanners expose my film?
Im going to Korea and I wanted to bring my shitty little holga and I've heard that film can get fucked up if it has an ISO over 800. ISO on my film is 400 but I thought I should double check.
Has anyone had experience with this?
>>2943143
Just bring it on hand carriage and you'll be fine. I've had my rolls go through four scans at worst on a trip, some 1600, none showed any defects.
>>2943149
Alright thanks bruv
>>2943012
Just do it dude. Be extra diligent, make sure you double check which chemical you're using before you pour, and use a stopwatch. It's actually quite a simple and enjoyable process.
I'm just here to shit up the thread with a little more Superia 200.

Any reason to get the 124G over a regular 124 other than the black trim?

Not enough. The point is that the water shouldn't bead.
>>2943265
No, the G is supposedly a bit more cheaply made
>>2943188
Yeah, I just got off my ass and did it last night. Scanning the results now. I accidentally used too little developer though (poured in 300ml instead of 375ml specified on the tank). I'll do another roll later today.
>>2942976
Where's that train station?
>>2943299
Well, here goes nothing. The results turned out soft and low contrast, but it was Fomapan 200 after all.
>>2943107
Heat the water to around 50-60c (122-140f) then stir.
The flakes are undissolved developer.
>>2943281
Noted. Thankfully the water is pretty soft where I live and there's no water spots on the film now that it's dried.
>>2943299
>>2943333
Great! Lesson learned about the amount of dev required. Looks like the film turned out nicely.
>>2943107
Might have precipitated out some minerals that were in the water. Did you use tap water?
>>2943327
Can't tell by just looking at the negs. Pretty sure it's somewhere on the Kintetsu-Nagoya line.
>>2943107
Shake it and mix well before use but if you read the ID-11 fact sheet from Ilford they say a little bit of precipitate at the bottom is normal.
Hate to upload something over the guided dimensions but managed to get through some of my scanning backlog.
Found this from the Bronica SQ 135 back. Delta 3200 in Rodinal.
I'd had this roll for over a year sat in my fridge and finally forced myself to use it. It's honestly not that bad.

Overpriced all of them. Tri-X is like 6-8€/roll, portra 160 is around 7€/roll. An euro cheaper in 120.
First roll of film in my life without working lightmeter.

>>2943437
Odd, because I use gold for tour snapshits and it's never been grainfest like that, except in shadows.
Did you develop it yourself or ship it out?
>>2943412
Oh, then it's fine. Go for it, everyone should get to shoot tri-x.
>>2943442
Not even that guy, look at the exif senpai. Every shitter who posts giant scans gets them from a lab/1 hour photo place.
>>2943442
I had it developped for me. Maybe they were exposed terribly because my lightmeter didnt work and the guy tried his best to save those photos, well I dont know.
I am shooting 2nd roll of Kodak with working lightmeter, maybe there will be a difference.
I shot a roll of fomapan 200 as well but they didnt develop b&w.

Photo club's iffy, but they'll probably have an epson that can scan better than that if they're dedicated.
As for developing, I'd learn to do it myself. Not as difficult as it sounds.
>>2943465
I would have to know how to shoot first.
>>2943466
>I would have to know how to shoot first.
Well, you could've started with a cheap shitty DSLR to learn the basics. As long as you can set ISO, aperture etc to practice exposure as well.
>>2943484
I had this old shitty Zenit lying around for years. The whole thing (3 rolls and developing) costed me like 15$ so far.
>>2943488
Well if it's economical and works for you, what have I to say?
>>2943493
Well not much, heh.
I just have to go and make more photos with now completely functional camera and try new place for developing.
>>2941138
>>2941147
It comes and goes. If you shoot it at 100 the results aren't tooooooo bad. Hella green shift when it's underexposed though.
>>2944069
Ever tried pushing it to 400?
I've only ever shot it at 200. I can imagine it goes grainy as fuck.
