do you like half frame cameras
have you used one before\
how do you think they compare to full frame cameras? for instance the pen F vs a full frame slr, or a half-frame compact vs the rollei 35
i have a real love for half frame cameras so id like to discuss them with you
>>2930634
>how do you think they compare to full frame cameras?
They are half of those
>>2930634
I heard the Pen F is phenomenal, but for some reason, I kind of hate having no metering built in...
>>2930634
>do you like half frame cameras
i love them.
>have you used one before\
yes i have. i have 3 half frame cameras.
>how do you think they compare to full frame cameras? for instance the pen F vs a full frame slr, or a half-frame compact vs the rollei 35
my ff cameras get scarce to no use. my half frames get all the attention. double amount of photos means total fun.
>>2930641
But anon, an internal meter might make you a lazy photographer and could lead to needle matching.
anyway i'm strongly, strongly considering buying this
http://page21.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/j365712106
thoughts? anyone used the original pen?
>>2930645
B-but... e-exposure...
>>2930656
honestly its not that hard to just judge the light with no meter at all, that's what i do 9 times out of 10
>>2930652
oh fuck or what about this dope Olympus Pen ashtray

Finished my first roll in the Agat 18k a little while ago, and developing my second roll from it tomorrow.
I found it a lot of fun to use, and I really enjoyed the results. It seems like it lends itself to creepshots for some reason, maybe because it's so small and unintrusive.
The exposure settings are really weird on it, but I didn't bother metering anything and just used the small pictures of clouds and suns to guesstimate. 90% of the exposures were acceptable so far.

yeah, obviously you'll get useable results when you're shooting underexposed black and white film and actually want a grainy high contrast blurry look

the samurai has always seemed like a weird af camera to me, how does it feel to actually use it?
>>2930705
wait what, do you actually know what the photos i take are like, or are you talking in generalities? do we know each other??
>>2930699
>maybe because it's so small and unintrusive.
the low profile of half frame cameras is definitely one of the things that endears them to me, even when you're photographing and people see the camera it's almost as if they don't care/don't take it seriously bc it's not a big "pro" looking SLR
>>2930713
>the samurai has always seemed like a weird af camera to me, how does it feel to actually use it?
once you get the feel of it, its fun. you can operate it all with one hand, zoom in, focus, shoot. the zoom option is very cool. the image rendition is very forgettable, however.
>>2930721
>Lens: 1:3.8-1:4.8/25mm-100mm Zoom
dang yeah that sounds like a pretty good zoom. on the other hand the samurai just seems like it has way too many bells and whistles for my taste, idk
>>2930740
>just seems like it has way too many bells and whistles
dont use them? im all for minimalist cameras, but this one is an oddball worth having. the inbuilt flash makes it a treat for passing it around at drunk parties. i think its a good camera for taking visual notes too, even for rough drafts of photos you plan to do.
>>2930751
you should post some of your photos from it!
>>2930767
will do but in a different thread. here is one, though. sadly the camera overexposed the whole roll (it was slide film).

Exactly, I've had lots of people look straight into the lens when I pass them on the street, and not even raise an eyelid, whereas if I'm out with an SLR people will sometimes shy away even if the lens is clearly pointed in a totally different direction from them.

I own a konica AA35 and a yashica samurai x3 im looking to pick up a yashica samurai z at some point.
>>2930634
Never heard of this till now, looks cool
Thinking about buying my gf one because she only shoots film and always complains about how expensive rolls are
Do the Olympus and canon half Frame cameras use the OM and CFD mount? Or do half frame cameras use their own mounts?
>>2930857
you mean like for interchangeable lenses? 99% of half frame cameras are compacts with a fixed lens that can't be swapped out. the only one with a system of lenses afaik is the Olympus Pen F, and I think it has a unique type of mount. They made OM (and other) adapters for it though.
>>2930861
there was the Canon Demi C too, it had 2 interchangeable lenses (a 50 and a 28), it wasnt in any way as big or as popular as the PEN system, but, it existed.
Developed my second roll from the Agat today. Couldn't be fucked to scan the frames individually on the Nikon scanner, so I just put them through the minilab scanner which only scans 35mm frames.
Any photoshop wizards have a super quick way to split the diptychs into separate files, in an as automated way as possible?
I have a fuji xpro 2, it's great fun for a half frame, but the quality never matches up to full frame.
I tend to just use mine at parties and things
>>2931803
kek
i have the richo half frame myself, also just use it for party snaps
not my first choice for serious work
>>2931802
Leave them as diptychs. Revel in the hipster joy of serendipitous pairings.

I do think they fit well together on a surprisingly high amount of the diptychs, but it would still be nice to be able to split them easily.
Seems cool. What's a good cheap half frame to start with?
>>2933339
ive seen the most basic canon demi (the ee28 i think its called) for about $15 on ebay. make sure the lightmeter works.
>>2933331
Look up how to record photoshop actions. You can batch most anything to whatever your specifications may be with this.
Damn, talk about coincidence but I saw this thread and decided to buy a half frame and a couple days later my (step) grandfather gets a stroke, and while the grandma was looking through his old stuff she found lots of old cameras, one of which is a yashica samurai x3.0 in perfect condition (probably never used by the looks of it) I'm not really a half frame guy (medium format for life) but this shit is too good to pass up, Anyone know anything about the yashica? Because I googled and didn't get great info
>>2937205
I own the x3 and i love it easy one handed camcorder style shooting. Hunts for focus pretty bad its really loud but takes a great shot.
>>2930634
I have a stack of half frame cameras, and I love them.
These FED Microns are a lot of fun to use, and getting double (usually more than double) the exposures is great.
Picked up an Olympus Pen F recently as well, which is just amazing to use. The way it looks, and the way it operates are fantastic.
The vertical framing always feels more natural to me, and some of my favourite film shots were done with half-frame rather than full frame.
>>2930708
whats that even meant to mean ?
what camear is that also ?
does it have a shitter speed of 540 ? wtf
>>2930634
i was thinking of getting one.
whats it like to get prints/scans from a normie/local shit pharmacy shop ?
theres only one half decent lab in my country and it costs 15 quid to get there.
>>2930680
>yashica samurai.
fuckkkk its booottifuil
are they expensive/easy to get ?
>>2937224
witch version would you recommend the 1 or 2 ?
i have three soviet cams and i think i have the bug.
>>2937231
60 dollars.

PEN F YUSSSSSS
>>2937360
I like my Pen F a lot. One of the most solid-feeling cameras in the hand, and the industrial design is beautiful.
(Taken on Ektar 100)
>>2937363
The F system lenses are compact, but not all that great. In particular, they have some really strange bokeh. I have the 40mm/F1.4, but I shoot over half of my photos with an OM 50mm/F1.4 attached, and occasionally the big ol' OM 80mm/F2
(Take with the F system 40mm/F1.4, Superia 800)
>>2937363
thats some outstanding quality for half frame. might get the pen f eventually, but the cool cameras to buy list is so long.
>>2937228
Theres plenty of labs that are cheaper than that and do a great job, where in the uk are you. I dont even think peak charge that much.
Unless you're talking b&w, in which case, do it yourself.
>>2937232
The 2 is a full frame version, so if you want half frame then you will need the regular Micron.
They are both fun to use though.
>>2937238
I'm always lurking.
>>2937479
how're those selenium automode meters holding up after all these years though, I can't help but wonder.
>>2937490
They are holding up quite well. The exposures never seem off on any of them.
Question: would the image circle of a half frame PEN lens fit my APSC sensor?
I just adapted a half frame industar lens and it works well, but I was wondering if PEN would too
>>2930680
I'm also on the demi train.
>>2937668
Yes, PEN lenses can be adapted to most APS-C sensor cameras - and because of this, most PEN lenses are BONKERS expensive on eBay right now (aside from thee plentiful 38mm/1.8, 40mm/1.4, and 100mm/3.5).
>>2939527
>tfw i missed a pen ft + 42/1.2 on eboi for $400 because my phone alarm didn't go off
God knows the last thing I need is another camera, but still...
>>2939547
>because my phone alarm didn't go off
ayy. snipping on ebay very early in the morning is comfy as fuck.
>>2939567
It's a very #autralianproblems moment, shit always ends at 3am or something our time.
In better news, I also missed the end of an auction for 20 rolls of 35mm Astia the other day.
>mfw $528
>>2939596
>20 rolls of 35mm Astia the other day
>$528
saw that one, it went to retarded price. 2 days forward an auction for 15 of the same rolls ended at like $90. so, keep lurking.
>>2939465
got any shots with it to peep at?
>>2939567
Tfw lost a zeiss lens because someone out bid me like an hour before the auction ended, and I woke up like 30 minutes after it was over, this morning.
End my life
>>2939547
The 42/1.2 *really* isn't all that much better than the 40/1.4 to justify the wildly inflated prices. The 60/1.5 on the other hand...
Just got a Pen EES-2 for $45
>>2930861
>99% of half frame cameras are compacts with a fixed lens that can't be swapped out.
>the only one with a system of lenses afaik is the Olympus Pen F
Then I am the one percent. I have one of these and I can use all my AR mount lenses and, with the adapter I picked up, I can use my Nikon glass as well.
The joy of switching between full frame for real shots and half for snaps is a dream.
I fucking love Konica. Wish they made a medium format SLR. Other than that prototype. But that's off-topic.
>>2930782
That looks like an old sci-fi set or something
>>2930652
Been using one of those for a while now, picked a mint original run pen up for 25 dollars. It's alright for snaps, but the 1/200 shutter speed limit is going to piss you off
>>2937364
fyi the pen g-zuiko auto-s f1.4 40mm is made with thorium and is quite radioactive.
>>2942875
You mean the Konica Auto-Reflex (with the dash)?
Sweet! I've always wanted one of those. Pretty rare though.
>>2937363
Ektar 100 is sharp no doubt, but I think 400 is not bad either.
