>weather in Virginia breaks, spend Presidents Day weekend on the Appalachian Trail
>spend the night in a hut, everyone's getting ready to leave the next day
>guy is changing his shirt
>"dude dude dude, hold on"
>right behind his armpit he has two fully engorged ticks, each with the full bullseye around it
>fully disinfect each one, try to tell him he should head down the trail and go to the nearest hospital
>"haha no man, the bullseye doesn't always mean it's lyme"

I spent the next two days completely paranoid, checking every single itch for ticks. Ruined the whole weekend.

How do I stop being so terrified of the little bloodsuckers? The thought that any shrub you touch could give you a debilitating, decade-long disease is horrifying to me.
>>
>>14864
I always have a honeybee sting me right on the spot the tick bit. It fucking hurts and swells, but obliterates the ring and everything else. This is probably only good within x amount of time, like same day.

Go to a doctor now and get the meds that prevents this shit from happening to you. If you don't, the meds will not work as well the longer you wait.

>How do I stop being so terrified of the little bloodsuckers?

Don't, the diseases they carry will destroy your quality of life.
>>
Do all ticks carry lyme bacteria? Or only those related to deers?
>>
>>14866
Only deer ticks. Along the trail I only ever see deer ticks anyway, though.
>>
>>14866
No and not even all deer ticks. Just watch out for a ring like in OP or a red line leading from the bite to someplace else like your armpit. Same goes for bug bites. True bugs not just insects. All bites should be monitored, but of course not all are the same disease.

I was pretty certain I had lyme from a tick. I live in the US but have no health insurance. I just went to the nearest free healthcare clinic and talked my way past the waiting period and got free antibiotics the next day; a whole months supply. I took half of it and kept the other half for future trips for my medkit.

Helps to scare them and say you have a VSD and if you get an infection because of it, you pretty much just die instantly. Man the look on that lady's face when I told her.

I really was born with a VSD.

I put it in a jar, shake the shit out of it to stun it then with a tissue I pick it up and press it against the bite as close to the center as possible. It releases apitoxin.

Put the fucker in a jar in the freezer till it stops moving. Usually 20-30 min. When it stops moving take it out of the jar. It will take few minutes to revive. Then do what you want with it. We used to tie a string around a leg and pin it to a board.

Early Signs and Symptoms (3 to 30 days after tick bite)

Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes
Erythema migrans (EM) rash:
Occurs in approximately 70 to 80 percent of infected persons
Begins at the site of a tick bite after a delay of 3 to 30 days (average is about 7 days)
Expands gradually over a period of days reaching up to 12 inches or more (30 cm) across
May feel warm to the touch but is rarely itchy or painful
Sometimes clears as it enlarges, resulting in a target or “bull's-eye” appearance
May appear on any area of the body
See examples of EM rashes

Later Signs and Symptoms (days to months after tick bite)

Severe headaches and neck stiffness
Additional EM rashes on other areas of the body
Arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly the knees and other large joints.
Facial palsy (loss of muscle tone or droop on one or both sides of the face)
Intermittent pain in tendons, muscles, joints, and bones
Heart palpitations or an irregular heart beat (Lyme carditis)
Episodes of dizziness or shortness of breath
Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord
Nerve pain
Shooting pains, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet
Problems with short-term memory

N. fowleri infection is too rare to give a fuck about, if you're really that paranoid about muh 300 recorded cases since the 60s use a noseplug when you're swimming in stagnant algae-filled ponds in the summer.

And to be honest, I'd be more worried about cyanotoxins.
>>
>>14907
Many people don't get a rash, and don't get the early symptoms, and so are unaware that they have Lyme until much later. Ergo, it remains untreated until it is a much more resistant illness. It's not unheard of for people to be on a regimen of multiple antibiotics for many years of even for the rest of their lives, because the treatment never fully works. On the other hand, the majority of people who get Lyme either notice the rash or the symptoms quickly, and treatment is effective for them in a very short time.

And then there are people who are given a treatment regimen until the illness appears to be gone, but then reappears periodically, because they weren't treated for long enough and the disease is still present.

All of these scenarios are real, and if you are denying that, then I have to wonder whether you don't have any experience with Lyme, or whether you're just very lucky and you don't know anyone who has had long-term Lyme issues. Of course, you could also be a troll. Who knows.

Ticks also spread TBE, at least in Europe. You can vaccinate against that, which gets you a pretty good cover.

There was a vaccine against Lyme disease, called Lymerix, but because some idiot patient advocacy groups sued GSK, there is nowadays no vaccination available anymore. It sucks.

Not saying GSK is a saint since they made the Pandemrix fuck-up with all the narcolepsia inside(tm).

Your best bet is to get antibiotic regime going as soon as you see those rings.
>>

You're a fucking idiot

1) Antibiotics in a med kid make ZERO sense - they a) expire b) are worthless against viral infections and c) REQUIRE A FULL DOSE

2) FULL DOSE IS NECESSARY FOR ANTIBIOTICS TO COMPLETELY KILL THE BACTERIA, ELSE IT WILL COME BACK RESISTANT TO THAT ANTIBIOTIC.

Thanks for furthering the resilience of MRSA, retard.

If you "need" to feel like a goddamn medic, at least be certified. If you knew a goddamn thing you'd carry REAL emergency drugs, like DPH, Epi, spare tubes of Glutose, Glucagon, etc.
>>

Plus, in the case of the Lyme disease, it does not matter if you get the antibiotic one or two weeks after being infected.

treat yout clothing with permethrin insecticide solution. and spray deet on clothing, and duck pants into socks, and wear light colored clothing so you can see them crawling around.
>>
>>14931
The reason why Lymes disease that doesn't receive prompt treatment is such a bitch to treat is that it settles into low blood flow tissues that are immunopriviledged, like your joint meniscuses.

Certain venoms, like bee venom and scorpion venom increase blood flow to these tissues, so your immune system gets another crack at the infection.

How can this be a simple blood test shows if you have Lyme disease or not. European healthcare is crazy shame we're going the same route.

Also there are online pharmacies where you can buy amoxicillin with no prescription. Take 1000mg a day for 20 days and it will kill off that bacteria quickly to the point where your bodies immune system should keep it supressed. If you have a flair up just buy some more antibiotics. Only thing you have to worry about in well your liver and kidneys straining on the pills.

>hiking and camping with my dog
>one day his leg is all lame
>take him to vet for blood test and X-ray to see if its broken or fractured someplace
>dog has Lyme disease
>vet thinks his lameness is from dog blowing out ACL since he failed a drawer test.
>recommends I get him to ACL specialists
>get mess for Lyme and within 2 days lameness is completely gone and he fine again
>get an MRI just for giggles since I have dog insurance
>specialists tells me the dogs knee is completely fine and vet has no idea that Lyme can cause lameness
>>
>>14944
With Lyme disease the bacteria is never fully killed. Hence when people contract it they always fail a Lyme test with blood because they always have it.

Also studies show holding onto old drugs are usually 80 to 90 potent passed expiration. Stop being some big pharma retard.
>>
>>14955

Offtopic but stop buying antibiotics online you fucking retards. You only create resistant strains of superbugs that way.

Blood test in itself tells nothing, it has to be a combination of symptoms + blood check to make the diagnosis. You are likely to be seronegative for several weeks after the infection.
>>
>>14864
The deer ticks in southeastern Ohio were active throughout the winter this year. We were pulling them off of ourselves by the dozens (literally) during the deer gun season. Temps would have to be below 20 before we would not find them on us. I can't imagine what spring is going to be like.
>>
>>14957
Test to check for bacteria in your blood once you get Lyme disease you always show positive for Lyme even after you have it under control.

Blood tests show results if you want to know your body a blood test is very telling. I go to a private lab once a year to get everything check. I had a friend who felt like shit for 2 years and went to doctors and no one could help. I took Them to a private lab for some blood work, noticed he had a vitamin D deficiency.

Also doctors prescribe antibiotics as well there helping create superbugs and resistant strains. Let's be honest here even if a person did take an antibiotic when they shouldn't its not that big of a deal. Its the cow farms in the Midwest that they are pumping antibiotics into cows that's creating superbugs and resistant strains.

It's easy to identify if something is viral or not plus which how much information there is you can diagnose yourself properly every time. If your smart enough to by antibiotics online most likely you can diagnose yourself.

The only time someone should visit the doctor is for specialists needs like surgery,MRI,X-ray because it's not economical to own your own MRI machine.
>>

What...? Lyme disease is a bacterial infection which causes all kinds of symptoms.

You can't blood test for all the symptoms.

And a blood test is not the final word! It can only support diagnosis but you can't do a single blood test and say "yup, you're it".

>>
>>14931
Bees and black widows and hemo toxic snake bites also kill lyme*

*may also kill you
>>
>>14914
The only person I know who has "chronic lyme" out of all the people that have had lyme that I know (including myself) is some chick that believes in homeopathy and took some plant live St Vincent's wart that's proven to interfere with anti biotics
>>
>>14881
>a whole months supply. I took half of it and kept the other half for future trips for my medkit.

annnnnnnnd thid is how bacteria evolves immunities to antibiotics.

>People who say they suffer from Chronic Lyme go right into the same group as people who think they are fat because they have a hyporactive thyroid.

>bacterial infections cant have long term effects

You're a fat neckbeard that needs an excuse to not go outside.
We have plenty of forests with rare underbush, and swamps with fuck all going on.
I didn't get a single tick last summer. First tick I ever got was from an abandoned house infested with more cats than ticks.
>>
>>14928
Boost the population of what eats ticks.
>>
>>14865
How common is this? Could I make a biz out of overnighting honey bees to people for large sums of money?

Skin looks like a fingers tip.
>>
>>14879
Bed bugs don't carry fuck all for disease. They're just an annoying pest. People hate them because they don't like waking up to their legs covered in little bumps.
>>
>>14956
Those are APAP tablets and other OTC pills you moron. Antibiotics are the not the same in terms of long term storage.

>everyone who's telling me I'm an idiot is just a BIG PHARMA CONSPIRACY

Neck yourself before you evolve a superbug that kills mankind.
>>
I have/had Lyme Disease. I got rid of it with a combination of eating zero sugars of any kind including from fruit and grains and taking antibiotics for a year and a half. A good counter to ticks is permethrin. You can even get your clothes permanently treated with it
>>
Anyone saying chronic lyme is bs hasn't lived by the Amish. They wait too long to treat it and by then it's almost impossible to be rid of. It also by this point can begin to interfere with brain function
>>
>>14991
>Permethrin

Enjoy your future cancer + Parkinson's disease.
>>
>>14993
I'll take cancer over being unable to remember my own name without taking a second to think

Mass breeding of opossums.

But what about strategies to stop the ticks from getting you

>vaccine
>for bacterial disease

Fucking dumbasses
>>
>>14939
It's pretty rare nowadays to get a disease from mosquitos because they kill them off en mass (at least in Florida, planes fly overhead and spray for them). Living in Florida and being /out/ means your getting bit by monsquitos.

He's gonna die. It's gonna be slow and he'll likely lose control of bowel functions many times along the way. Be a friend to him.

Realize also that odds are high you had a tick you didn't know about and are in the exact same boat. Post updates as you are able.
>>
>>14866
As far as I know, most ticks aren't related to deer. Except maybe distantly.
