caught 20 bass one day and 50 the next

showed me pics of some very impressive bass including an 8 lb'er that had just laid its eggs

I live in Fort Worth and they're spawning up here. I caught a 5lber about 3 weeks back and I've been catching a bunch in the 3lb range. I think a lot of places are getting more into the post spawn, but I would guess there will still be some spawning bass for the next month or so.

Bass Pro has them and I think I may have gotten a pack at Dick's before. Bass Pro also has the Incredi-Slims which I like more, but only in like two colors. The Incredi-Slims are the same length and everything, but the main body where you put the hook is thinner so you don't have to use a 5/0 EWG to get a good hook set on the bass like with some creature baits. 3/0 or 4/0 EWG works for the Incredi-Slims, any of the 5"-6" lizards, most worms, etc.

Got some small bass chasing my lures and one real bite but not shit else. I was expecting that tho because of the cold front, plus I think LMB are spawning and won't bite shit unless you find a bed, plus I went to this clear water lake where they are already super picky and only bite under the best conditions. 9'-9.5' 5wt Reddington is what I use. You don't want to go cheap on the rod. Get a budget reel pre-filled with backing and high vis floating fly line. Get a few 9' 5x tapered mono fly leaders, and ask the tackle/flyshop guy what flies are good this time of year where you are.

For small stream trout fishing though, be ready to get skunked. It truly is an art, and to catch anything you need to know what you're doing, even if you are good at casting.

Best way to start imo is going to a pond to catch panfish. They devour anything that lands on the surface.

Fished the same lake I fished last weekend for around an hour. Used a spook puppy. Got one splash casting along the shore but didn't set the hook soon enough. Still really fun, I'm going to try there in the evening again and hopefully get one on it.

First outing of the year tomorr... err, today. Time to strip line, tear down reels, reline, and put together a selection of tackle.

Pro-tip for those without the little electric line-strippers: Thread a bolt and nut to a bottle cap so the bolt sticks out the top. Screw cap on bottle and chock the bolt into a cordless drill. Tie your line to it, open your bail/click your spool release, and go to town. Probably a good idea to take it somewhat easy so you're not cooking anything. Definitely slow down when you're near the end so the drill doesn't jerk the reel and rod out of your hand or whatever is holding it. Neat thing is you can just unscrew the bottle off the cap, put a new bottle on, and repeat. Be sure and recycle the old line if you've a line recycling place around or your local recycling company will accept it (not all do because line, plastic grocer's bags, etc clog their apparatus). Run a razor down the bottle several times at least if it has to go to a landfill.

'Course pinnacle of brilliance that I am I've let my drill batteries die so I'm probably gonna be stripping the first couple by hand whilst they charge.

I'm gonna pack my topwater rod tomorrow and a couple lures just in case. Sometimes it's surprising how early/late fish here in Maryland will hit topwater. Hell, this SP-7 got all it's scars from a single day of fishing in early October on Raystown Lake in PA. My best topwater time period is usually mid-to-late spring and late-summer into early fall. When things get real warm up here topwater will still work but I've gotta slow way down, plus grass mats become obnoxious and demand either frogs or punch rigs. If the fish are holding deep to stay out of the sun then it's almost like winter fishing. I'll go back to football jigs, jigging spoons, texas rigs and such.

My memory was correct, and you can mail mono directly to their recycling center, though I'm fortunate enough to have parks around here where I can take it.

I don't save mono or fluoro but I do recycle mono. I still haven't found much info about recycling fluoro around here.
I usually razor it to shreds once its on the bottle before I toss it in the garbage can. Just trying to keep birds and other critters from getting tangled in it. For braid I'll run it at least two seasons before disposal. I use another setup kind of like a reel-to-reel movie projector with a couple empty spools and the cordless drill so I can take off the line, reverse it, then spool it back on the reel. Works wonders.

Of course he had this nice St. Croix surf caster he custom-ordered from a catalog umpteen years ago (he's a good bit older than me). I haven't fished salt in a long time and I miss it but piers around here tend to be crowded, combat-fishing nonsense. Grumpy old fuckers and clueless people swearing up and down you'll tangle everybody's line if you throw anything other than a chunk of lead with some hooks and bait out into the water. Same reason he gave up pier fishing. There are a few decent beaches/rocky shores not far from here and if I ever put together a proper surf-casting setup I'll start fishing lures in salt again. Til then I'm pretty content with brackish and fresh waters from my little jon boat. But if you can beat the crowd and people aren't uptight about it by all means give it a shot. Get a 7ft ultralight rod, spinning reel, and put some 4lb mono on there or 2lb if you want to be really hardcore. That will throw lures all the way down to 1/32 oz pretty easily. If you want to have more power in case a big bass takes the lure, go with a light rod rather than ultralight and 6lb line instead of 4lb and you will still throw the light stuff okay.

Fishing around kids has to be the worst fucking thing about fishing. Here's a particularly bad story:

>fishing at local park
>using minnows on a bobber, since it's a heavily fished lake and the fish rarely hit lures
>group of kids (about 4-8) and their parents come up to lake
> 8 year old has a fishing rod
>using some sort of leech lure, has it on the hook wrong
>sees me fishing farther down the shore and begins coming towards me, younger siblings following
>8 year old begins asking me the regular "Catch anything?" and whatnot
>tell him I caught a perch, 2 pickerel, and a bass
>kid begins casting right on top of me
>eventually crosses my line
>see parents watching and doing nothing
>untangle the lines, kid asks for advice on what lure he should use and pulls a bunch of discarded lures from his pocket
>asks me the "probability" of catching something on each of these lures is
>just want him to go away, so I tell him to just stick with what he's got and fix his lure for him
>soon after I catch a nice pickerel and the kids are ecstatic
>of course, now the kid wants to use my minnows
>only have 4 or 5 left
>tell him that I paid for them (things are only 4 bucks per dozen but he wouldn't know)
