Still looking for good stuff for the Pastebin and Imgur. Maybe we can get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

Headed to FL for easter. Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier will be nearby. I'd really like to catch some pompano. I usually fish for specks and redfish in my state. Anyone have advice (bait, terminal tackle, tactics) for hooking pompano off a pier?
>>
>>989802
Hook type/size for live or cutbait would be really helpful.

Is a texas-rigged senko too light for a medium-action rod? It doesn't seem to cast great compared to my lightweight rod.
>>
>>990121
Do you pop the corks like you do for speckled trout?
>>
>>989858
Reels are all plastic and complete garbage and the rods have no action so are terrible if you ever want to get into lures. If you spend $10-$20 more, there are a ton of better options.

>>990115
Did you actually catch that on a hook?

>>990122
That would make a lot more sense for me and other people in the south. But idk if I would like getting soft plastics for 10 months out of the year.
>>
>>990134
If you had a boat you could fish more than soft plastics...
>>
>>989858
Its a good combo, maybe not for that price. Look at some of the cheaper ugly stick combos or find a better rod in that price range.

Ignore everyone saying ugly stiks are bad, I fished with nothing but ugly sticks for years and have never had a problem with them. They are very good rods and the price is right.
>>
>>990135
Yeah probably. In the summer here the only way to get anything decent sized is either right at dusk, during a really good pressure system, or launching a Texas rig with a 1/2oz+ weight on the memecaster.
>>
>>990155
>fished with nothing but Ugly Stiks
>they're not bad
Maybe one day you will try something different. Even in the same price range, almost everything else has way better action. Ugly Stiks are fine if you want to soak bait on mono for carp or catfish, but terrible for anything beyond that.

Ugly stiks are perfectly fine for their price point, stop being a gear queer.

Why do you even dislike them so much? They're kind of soft but still plenty sensitive for whatever kind of fishing you want to do.
>>
>>990178
Heavy ass fiberglass and they are just so flimsy and wobbly. Any of the store brand rods for the same price will feel better and the Lightning Rods for the same money actually feel like a respectable rod. Ugly Stiks feel like the $10 generic Bass Pro rods.

>>

If you prepare your fish properly they can last well over a year
>>
>>990257

Nope, I fish exclusively with lures for saltwater fish.
Several old timers who have fished longer than you have been alive have also told me that ugly stiks are perfectly fine and everyone they know are alright with them... they all also have crazy expensive setups. The only people who say ugly stiks are bad are online circle jerk communities who are salty that they don't cost $1000 for a rod.

All glass heavy rods do.

Ugly stick is the worst. It has metal spring steel in it.
>>
>>990313
"Garbage sensetivity"
I can feel when minnows and very small bream peck at bait just fine, detecting a hit from a bass is not a problem whatsoever. The only thing more expensive rods do vastly better is feeling bottom structure but I can still feel just fine with an ugly stik + a beginner doesn't really need to worry about that when they're starting.

I fish all day from sunup to sun down and I have NEVER went home sore from casting all day, rod weight shouldn't matter whatsoever if it stays under a couple of pounds.
>>
>>990323
you clearly havent ever fished from hours befor sunrise until far fter sunset with an 8, 9, or 10 ft surf rod, hucking 2-4 ounce plugs all day
>>
>>990327
"rod weight shouldn't matter whatsoever if it stays under a couple of pounds."

Sorry, was it not clear we talking about light rods for bass and shit rather than obnoxiously large surf combos? Also go to the gym, if you are tired from throwing lures you need to work out your little skeleton arms. The only thing that should tire you out fishing is fighting large fish.

Yeah you can feel it if they actually it the lure good. If it's a light strike it's very hard to tell if you got bit. Not to mention actually being able to tell the difference from a bite or a rock.

>I fish all day from sunup to sun down and I have NEVER went home sore from casting all day, rod weight shouldn't matter whatsoever if it stays under a couple of pounds.

I find UglyStix to be good for reeling in a hooked fish, but total crap for casting and working the lure. They were hot shit 30 years ago though.
>>
>>990356
>>990363
IDK maybe I've just got the feel with them since I have used them for so long but I really don't have a problem detecting bites whatsoever. I don't do much bass fishing but the few times I went there were zero problems detecting bass hits or anything. If they hit it light enough that you can't feel it they probably don't have the bait in their mouth far enough to get hooked anyways.

The casting rods aren't flimsy at all and the spinning rods are flimsy as fuck but they are still perfectly fine.

>>990367
But you are the only people I've ever seen talk shit about ugly stiks. The dozens of people I've asked about them who actually know their shit and have been bassing their entire lives say that they are fine and have never heard anything bad about them and my experience backs it up.

If you really want 2 good rods that will last a lifetime get a bass pro extreme series rod and Shimano curado and do the same for the spinning rod and get a Shimano ultegra spinning reel.

Or get a st Croix MOJO bass series rod. If you want to get spendy buy daiwa or Shimano or get Loomis rods.

What I listed is like 150ish to 225 a setup.

If the reels are too much get the citicia and a Sahara by Shimano and a bionic blade from bass pro or Abu vendetta rods.

Learn how to fix eyelets or just save 50 bucks for rod repair if you break one.

Want super cheap entry stuff you will upgrade in 6 months? Get some browning Roda and reels or low end abu, or Shimano, and Daiwa stuff.

Get two matching 7 foot rods. Medium heavy for the bait cast rod fast action and medium weight fact action for the spinning rod.

Any reel around 100 dollars is probably going to be fine. Read reviews.

If all you can afford is an ugly stik fine. Just get a Sedona or sienna spinning reel for it. The Shakespeare reels are fucking trash. I would use an ugly stik. I would never use one of the reels they come with if I had the choice.
>>
>>990403
Which is hilarious. Their drag power is weak and they don't have good torque even with a power handle. Most low profile reels with deep spools are better.

People just like them because they are gold and made of metal so they think they are better even though their drag blows and their cast control sucks.

Like this. Much better.

30lbs of drag. Spool a reel like this up with braid and bang. Kill fish all day and don't have to hold a fuck huge Calcutta that weighs 45 ounces.
>>
>>990411
Just YouTube it man. Ultimately it's a personal choice. You can cast heavier lures more often and faster and further with a baitcaster. Stuff 1/4 ounce and up is very easy to baitcast. Learn how the reel works before you rage when you tangle it. Start with a 1 ounce or 3/4 ounce lure.

Spinning reels are good for everything but they don't excell at launching spinner baits and cranks far.

I use them for drop shots, shaky headys, small jerkbaits, lures under 1/4 of an ounce or right at 1/4 oz. Etc etc.

YouTube informative fisherman and tactical bassin. The tactical bassin guys are sort of autists but they know their shit and one guy has a ridiculous huge g loomis collection. Like 8k in rods alone so they really care about the stuff and guide for a living.
>>
>>990268
Yeah you could use vaccuum sealed bags. I dry my fish after cleaning and wrap them in aluminum foil. Then I stuff them in a freezer ziploc bag and keep them frozen till I need them. They keep fresh as long you don't thaw and re freeze them.

>>990439
Do they really? I have one and it's a great reel, but I've never used it for salt.
>>
>>990441
you can use anything in salt so long as you rinse it with fresh water after use. The majority of the reels and tackle I use for inshore fishing are for freshwater equipment but I just douse everything with a bottle of water when done and occasionally put a coat of oil on. No rust whatsoever if you take care of it.
>>
>>990192

I use my ugli UL all the time with little kastmasters and mepps. Works fine. I don't know if I'd want to do it from shore.
>>
>>990445
That's what I thought. All those 13 fishing reels are suppose to be corrosion resistant though, so that's why I was wondering.

The only reel I wouldn't fish salt with is my chronarch. Apparently the spool material is very supceptable to corruption. (According to Shimano)

As would any reel you don't rinse the fuck off with fresh water. There is a reason they get cleaned often. If you submerge a Calcutta and don't wash it the thing is fucked.

That 13 fishing reel isn't gonna rust from a day of use you dumb fuck.

Stop being a dumb troll. You're probably mad your Calcutta has baby gears
>>
>>990450
Thats fucked up that they would use something that corrodes that easily. Atleast they make notice of it so people don't ruin their reels. It's most likely just for people who use it in salt and don't clean it off so that they can't send in for a warranty replacement or something though.

>>990449
I actually love ugly stiks for little lures like that. The bendyness actually makes it really easy to flick light lures super far with just a little wrist movement and fish typically slam things like spinners and shit while also hooking themselves so the lack of sensitivity doesn't matter whatsoever.

>>990423
Braid is a LOT better. I switched around a year ago and hated it for the first couple months but now I can never go back to mono. The lack of line memory and extra sensitivity really make it a lot better.

>>990411
Get a spincast for your first rod. Something like this
https://www.amazon.com/Pflueger-PFLPRES2-662MCOMBO-President-Spinning-Combo/dp/B00DTTRY0S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1491959335&sr=8-2&keywords=spinning+reel+combo
or this
https://www.amazon.com/Ugly-Stik-GX2-Spinning-Combo/dp/B00F0KMLCK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1491959335&sr=8-3&keywords=spinning+reel+combo

spooled with 8-10 lb mono or 15-20 lb braid these would be perfect and would last you a long time until you decide to upgrade to something better.
>>
>It's most likely just for people who use it in salt and don't clean it off so that they can't send in for a warranty replacement or something though.

That's kinda what I think, but I'd rather not risk it when I have a whole lot of other reels I can use.

At the $300 mark I'd argue you're getting pretty close to diminishing returns. They're definitely better than the lower cost reels, but if you only fish once or twice a month they probably aren't worth the monies.

Not trying to discourage anyone from buying a high end reel. Just don't feel like you absolutely need to spend a car payment on a reel. The $100-200 reels are more than good enough for most freshwater fishin.

My Abu Black Max/Vengeance Combo is a few years old now and still my go-to for Jigs and Texas Rigs. 6' 9" rod, Medium Heavy, rated for 1/4 to 1oz lures. 14 lb fluoro on the reel.

Anything weightless or even weighted wacky rigging I stick to spinning tackle. 6' Quantum Array Medium-Light with an Abu Cardinal SX10 and 6 lb mono. Rod is rated for 1/16 to 3/8 oz. Same setup I use for jig spinners. If they still made it think it'd be nice to get the 6' 6" Medium, maybe an SX20 and throw 8 lb mono just to run some larger soft plastics or use heavier weights when conditions call for it.

With a Yamamoto senko it shouldn't be. They weigh a little over a 1/3oz. Other brands may be lighter though I'm not sure.

I only use 2 rod setups and basically the same dozen or so lures 99% of the time. Is this weird?
>>
>>990588
Nah, I take about a half-dozen rods when I'm on the jon boat but if I'm hoofing it forget that noise. When fishing around the local neighborhood ponds I always keep the spinning rod mentioned above on hand and then I'll switch what my second rod is depending on conditions. Usually it's either that Abu jig/t-rig combo or my topwater setup. Middle of the year when grass mats and algae get nasty I go for the frog setup.

It isn't uncommon for me to have a selection of rods on the truck plus a bulky tackle bag after a day on the water. Especially on a Monday if I fished late the previous day and didn't feel like unloading everything. But I'll go fishing right after work so it's nice to have all the options. If my second rod isn't working I can always walk back to the truck and grab one for a different tactic. I can also change out the lures in the small tackle boxes I keep in my vest pockets. But I still won't carry more than two and small assortment of tackle for them. Between two rods I can usually cover a fairly wide amount of tactics.

but tl;dr - Not weird at all.

>>
>>990611
Slow rolling? Yeah its called reeling slower. It's more important to have more drag and recover line quickly to pull fish off structure.

That's why that little christ cuck Lawson Lindsay fishing loses his fish so often

>Nah, I take about a half-dozen rods when I'm on the jon boat but if I'm hoofing it forget that noise. When fishing around the local neighborhood ponds I always keep the spinning rod mentioned above on hand and then I'll switch what my second rod is depending on conditions.

I'm never hoofing it or at ponds though...motorized canoe on a 29k acre lake. I probably should be using all sorts of rods/presentations but I just haven't seen the need, take less stuff every year.

When you take 6 rods out what purposes are they getting used for? Jigging, crankbait, topwater, plastics, etc? How are you finding a use for all those presentations in the same place, same time of year?
>>
>>990642
I fish with only one rod the vast majority of the time and only own two but you can't deny that having multiple rods is just better. It's so much easier to have several different baits to throw around until you find out what the fish are biting than it is to constantly cut your line and retie different baits.

Also different rods for different types of fishing, obviously if you were gonna start flipping you wouldn't use the same rod and reel as if you were just jigging a light bait.

>How are you finding a use for all those presentations in the same place, same time of year?
I fish for anything that bites. Pic related and a dozen similar charts for various species kind of explain why I carry so much. And charts are okay and show how much overlap there is in tackle selection throughout the seasons, but also personal experience and lots of media consumption justify it - at least in my mind. Especially on a first-outing of the year to any body of water.

That grass mat that didn't show up until late June last year might already be a thick carpet by mid May this year and I won't know until I'm on the water. If I didn't pack the broomstick & braid then I've nothing to frog over it or punch into it I've robbed myself of a potentially successful spot. Just as one example.

Another example might be I'd planned on bottom-fishing deep with jigs or worms because of a week of exceptionally warm weather combined with the grasses and shoreline cover not taking off yet to provide cool shade. So I figure the fish are sticking to the bottom in deep waters and pack the jigging stick, but that 20% chance of precipitation gets bumped to 90% a few hours into fishing and a nice cool rain and cloud cover bring the fish up and moving around more. Sure I can go back to jig spinners but the cloud cover cuts back on the flash of the blades. Maybe I throw the little squarebills that aren't too big for my spinning setup and I start nailing dink after dink. Now in my mind I'll be thinking "What if I had a 2.5 rattling squarebill on my cranking stick? Maybe a big jerkbait? Would I have found a new personal best?"

It's a disease I'll admit. The unattainable goal of being ready for everything. I know it can't be achieved but it doesn't keep me from trying.
>>
>>990680
>Also different rods for different types of fishing
This too. The truth is I could combine a couple of my setups. Two are identical in every way except 12 lb mono vs 12 lb fluoro. But I have strong preferences that keep me from doing it. It has to mono for this, fluoro for that, braid for the other thing... I think it just helps with confidence and sometimes fishing confidently is all it takes to improve your bite.

Sounds hokey but confidence probably does some subconscious stuff for you. Maybe something subtle about the cadence with which you bounce a football jig or twitch a jerkbait that improves the bite. I still haven't figured it out. Like breaking in a brand new setup or testing out a nifty new lure, it seems like the days I'm feeling good about fishing I catch more fish. Could just as likely be that when I'm catching more fish I feel good about fishing.
>>
>>990687

Can anyone recommend a minimal set of lures, hooks, bait and weights and stuff for freshwater fishing? I want to add fishing to my multiday camping trip in Sweden. My plan is to catch some trout or other small fishes in order to cook them over a campfire. I already bought a cheap telescopic rod, a spinning wheel and a spool of 10 lb line. But what amount of tackle/bait should I bring with me? I would see fishermen usually carry huge boxes full of tackle with them; however I obviously won’t have the place in my pack for a lot of gear.

Small metal spoons from 1/4 oz down to 1/12 oz. Inline spinners. Bright colored trout dough bait if they have that in Sweden. Hooks "octopus" type in size 10 and size 6. Sliding egg shape weights in 1/4 and 1/2 oz. Swivels. Worms if you can find or buy them. That is all you should need.
>>
>>991022
size 10 hooks work pretty well all around. add a small split shot assortment and maybe a float.

panfish are probably the easiest thing to catch. hook bobber splitshot worm. you can occasioanally catch other fish, just about anything will eat a worm. cast out different places let it sit a few minutes.

10lb seems kind of heavy for trout but i dunno. if they're stocked trout, floating powerbait on a slip sinker rig works wonders. wild trout will hit inline spinners and small jigs w/ soft plastics.

also europe has some wacky fishing laws from what i understand. you might need to take a class to get a permit

Not at all, the last 5 or so times I went out I've only used 2 lures. If you know what the fish will bite in an area/time you don't really need a huge tackle box full of lures. Gulp jerk baits and DOA paddle tails are just about the only baits I use anymore with a zara spook thrown in occasionally. DESU going out with just a couple of baits makes me feel like I'll do better too since I'm not constantly second guessing my lure choice and just focus on fishing.

>>
>>991591
Tell me about how you fish.
I'm the anon that is only successful n crappie jigs, tubes and grubs.
When I go out for smallmouth I got to use some farther casting since the river is huge and it's ok to up the hook size since they have the mouths for it, unlike trout and panfish.
As long as I have 1/4 ounce of weight I should be fine. Any suggestions?
>>
>>991604
i fish for largemouth (no smallmouth in my region) and almost exclusively use 1/16oz and 1/8oz slider heads (think it's a 1/0 offset shank not sure though) with mini lizards, 4" or 3" senkos, and smallie beavers

the 4" senko casts pretty far on the 1/16oz and the 3" does too guess it's just a sweet spot for my setup

try a senko on that 1/4oz and it should really sail out there and fish it slow along the bottom with some twitches and jerks cause the senko really darts around well underwater
>>
>>991616
Oh yea, when i put on large plastics that's normally all I need to get it out there, weight is just to make it sink faster. I think senkos and some lil crawfish plastics I got are a good shot.

Thanks
>>
>>991619
get some smallie beavers if you can they're made by reaction innovations

they're kinda like a crawdad i like the big texan and california 420 colors for those
corndog is a good one too it's like a darker pumpkinseed but the claws are chartreuse and for some reason they seem to really piss off spawning bass so they'll always hit it

Been fishing every morning this week.

When I get there fish are breaking water all around me. This goes one all morning. Not one bite.

Am I being trolled by bass? Or are they most likely carp?

If they are bass, how can I get them to hit?
>>
>>991682
Most likely carp. Especially if your water is dirtier.
>>
>>991682
Oh and if it is bass use a spook or some kind of walking bait. They're most likely feeding on shad so a white or silver color would be best. A frog should work too.

Freshwater right? Are you sure they are bass? You see them pop out of the water and not just lil taps on the topwater? Because i know bream/sunnies do get aggressive on the top sometimes. Meaning those small fish arent interested in eating a big lure
>>
>>991694
Check google maps first for parks by water ways in your area. Pretty obvious, just look for blue parts on the map with green land since google represents green as a park/forest.
Once you find one just look at the park's website to see if it allows fishing.

Now for other spots, like a river, or a place that is public but doesnt have great parking, look on the road view to look for parking spaces and posted property signs while your at it.

Take a look at your state's tax map, mine has one so it's easy to see if the spot im looking for is owned. I figured out a spot on a river that is mostly private but one section is owned by the state and they allow fishing there too, for example.

Sometimes the place you want to fish just cant be fished, so always have a backup spot locally.
>>
>>991712
Freshwater yes

I assume they are bass.

I keep hearing the water break and when I look, then the fish is gone and ripples left.

Only once did I catch a glimpse of the actual fish and it was good sized what looked like a largemouth.

Do I need these stupid hooks to wacky rig senkos, or can I just use a normal circle hook? Also, what size should I be looking for? I'd probably be mostly throwing 4 inch.
>>
>>991734
You don't need them but maybe try them out and decide if it's worth it. For 4 inch senkos I would try either size 1 or 1/0 hooks.
>>991733
Usually if you see some little fish along the bank that is a good sign that there are fish there. But a better rule of thumb is that everything has fish in it, because that is generally the case.
