Still looking for good stuff for the Pastebin and Imgur. Maybe we can get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

Been practicing spinning reel casting in my backyard, I'm getting backlash about once an hour. I'm trying to do it like this guy https://youtu.be/hUurIgE2H8U but I'm pretty sure most of my problems are from trying to stop the line with my finger before closing the bail. Can I just skip it and close the bail to avoid shit-tons of line fiddling?
>>
Why can't I find more soft plastics in white ?
Easily my most productive color

Though I am mostly just looking at one manufacturer who's lures I like
>>
>>981607
Backlash on spinning reels?! You either have some really shitty line or the spool has too much line on it. You want ~1/8" of space left on the spool otherwise it will coil off like that.

Also I wouldn't recommend closing the bail mid-flight. You shouldn't be getting backlashed on a spinning reel anyway, but if you flip the bail closed with a heavier weight or lure, you risk snapping the line from the shock.

>>981616
Look online. Flukes are pretty easy to find in white but not so much worms and other creature baits. But the companies might make them and just not sell them at your local Cabela's because it isn't super popular.
>>
>>981623
Didn't think I'd over-fed it, you tell me, and the line is low-vis green 8lb mono Trilene.

>>
>>981635
That spool doesn't look overfilled. Give braid a shot, mono his high memory and doesn't work well with spinning rods that have micro guides.
>>
>>981641
>ned rig memeshroom head
>>
>>981635
That looks about right. The other trick people will do with mono is to run hot water over the spool and it will help the line form to it a bit better. Never done it myself but I'm sure you could Youtube it.

Braid is def better with the memory and won't jump off like that but as much as I would like to shill for it, you need to solve the problem with mono first.

Semi-noob here, what in the fuck was I supposed to do in this situation?

>fishing a size 3 circle hook with a big piece of hotdog rigged up
>feel something huge bite
>set the hook like i got moby dick on the other end
>keep reelin'
>huge fucking turtle on the end
>hook lodged into the roof out of its mouth or something, almost hooked through the entire head

I pulled him out the water but the fucker kept kicking and squirming (understandably) and tucking his head back in/nipping at me and I couldn't get the hook out to save my life, so I thought it would be better to cut the line instead of putting more stress on the guy. I feel bad though.

>>

>>
>>981652
Believe it or not everything I've read says that if a hook gets swallowed or the thing fights you too hard it is actually better to just leave it in when it comes to survivability.

Seems like a dick move but apparently they either wiggle out eventually or just rust to nothing.
>>
>>981652
Fuck turtles. I normally try and rip the hooks out with pliers but sometimes you just gotta cut the line.

Uh you know how easy spin handles are to remove right? You literally just unscrew the cap on the other side off to switch it from right to left handed. >>
>>981790
What do you mean by trophy fishing in particular? Large fish, rare fish or just specifically catching and killing for a taxidermy or reproduction?

A hunter who doesn't kill his prey is more or less a photographer, but a catch and release fisherman is still a fisherman and he functions in a virtually identical fashion. It doesn't really take fun out of fishing to let it go as long as you take a good picture.

Literally my first time out fishing by myself tomorrow.

Running a Texas rig thru some canals in SW FL.

I have a very old rod and reel and over the summer I want to get a good quality setup.

I'm a college student so a takedown rod is important.

What are your favorite rods and reels?

I'd prefer spinning reel for teaching my GF how to fish.

Everytime I take the yak out I remember why I don't like fishing in them. Wind sucks.

What's that TexasLizardFag? You want to fish this spot? Okay. I'll wait until you cast then blow like hell and make whatever you did pointless. Or maybe I'll blow you into these trees.

Fuck you wind.
Paddling around is still fun though
>>
>>981941
Just go with a spinning reel. You can get a decent spinning combo for <$100. If you buy a baitcast combo in the same price range, it's going to be a beginner setup.

Plus spinning combos are more versatile. If you're running braid, I recommend setting something up like my President LE combo. In that 30 size, 15lb braid works perfect. Put it on a M rod with fast action and you can cast light little 1/8oz stuff for panfish or finesse bass presentations or toss a big 3/4oz+ jig or spinnerbait on it too and the 15lb will still rip through some weeds.

If you try and drop $70-$80 on a baitcast combo, even with lighter line, you will probably have a hard time casting <1/4oz baits, especially if you want to throw a smaller crank or popper on a windy day.

If I were to recommend an order of purchasing rods for a freshwater fisherman like me who is working from shore, it would probably be:

1- M Spinning combo with 8lb-10lb mono or 15lb-20lb braid
2- UL/L Spinning Combo with 4lb mono or 10lb or less braid
3- MH Spinning Combo with 12lb-17lb mono or 20lb-30lb braid (good for soaking baits, catfish, carp, or heavy bass stuff)
4- M or MH Memecaster Combo with 10lb-17lb mono or 15lb-30lb braid

Just my 2¢

Get a pole, you can anchor yourself instantly for a few casts and quickly pull it up when youre ready to move
>>
>>981983
I have 3. This is the newest one lol. They're pretty good. You can't beat it for $40. Today i was pitching into some pretty thick stuff with a 3/4oz weight (which also cast a fucking mile with a 7' 6" pole kek) and ripping the fuck out of it. They may have some QC issues, but all of mine have been fantastic.

>>981999

mine is just a loop of rope with a piece of pvc running through it tied off to the side. I've got a ball of tape at the top end so it wont slide off the rope.

>trying to stop the line with my finger before closing the bail.
That's a good way to bugger your line up. If you wanna stop your lure short carefully cup the bail with your off hand. Or even close the bail with your off hand. Just don't do it really early into a cast. Stopping the line while the lure is still flying fast could cause the line to snap provided there is sufficient speed and lure weight. It's better you continue to get your practice in working on accuracy so you don't have to worry about over-shooting your target.

>>981941
>What are your favorite rods and reels?
Can't speak for takedowns though I should probably start looking. In the market for a dual sport and wanna be able to pack a small tackle box and rod or two. One of my favorite setups is a 7' Abu Veritas 2.0 M/F paired with a Revo S. It's the first time I've put over $200 into a combo and it was my first purchase from the Revo series of reels. The difference between the Max series reels is night and day. I use it with 12# mono for my heavier topwater poppers and spooks/walk-the-dog baits. It even can cast some of my lighter poppers (Pop-X, Rapala SP-7's, etc) that'd I'd usually use on spinning tackle at the cost of some casting range. I run an identical setup with 12# Fluoro for jerkbaits and medium suspending swimbaits. Those tend to benefit from the same slack-line technique used for "walking the dog." It's wild to watch shadow raps flicker a full 180 with the pop of a rod tip.

'course all that said pic related is my number one choice. I've an old Quantum (Array?) rod from a $20 combo whose reel long since bit the dust. Put another $30'ish into an Abu Cardinal SX10 and some 6# mono. I'll throw jig spinners all day long and have rarely had them fail me.

>>
>>982086
Tiller steer isn't gonna save you from the wind and it's gonna tie up a hand that could be on your reel. I'd know, I've a transom mount trolling motor and wind is still a hassle. You could rig up an anchor trolley like the yakkers do. The downsides of course are still the same, you've gotta raise and lower an anchor, and there is always the chance a fish is gonna wrap the line around the anchor line. Better yet steal another idea from the yakkers. If you're fishing shallows maybe get some sort of pole you can stick into the ground to tie the boat to. I'd go so far as to make some kind of sliding clamp with a peg that'll fit into the oar-holes (if your boat has'em). No need to tie and untie that way.
>>
>>982086
I could deal with using my foot to steer and fish at the same time. The issue is trying to fish while I have no easy way to keep me relatively in one spot and keep both hands available.
>>
>>982093
The river here varies from 6+ metres to 20+ so a pole isn't an option, the trolling motor is just for trolling otherwise I use some rope to tie me up to a tree or snag.

>>982099
I'm still new to using it but it seems like you're concentrating more on controlling it in windy conditions than fishing.

I actually thought about this and would like to experiment. Especially when fishing for sneks, they are so easily spooked and will sometimes come to the top for a gulp of air and see me. Somebody mentioned that bright colored clothes could scare fish away and I could understand it at those clear water lakes if a fish is hesitant to bite when they see a giant bright red blob right on the shoreline.

man you southerners will fish for anything huh? I was under the impression if you wanted snake you just got your shotgun. Unless you mean snakeheads.

I'm of the opinion that as long as you wear neutral colors it won't make much of a difference. Kinda embarrassed though because I got a rod holder for cheap from bass pro but they only had it in "Fishouflage" which looks real try-hard.

I've caught Nerodia sipedon before. They put up a better fight than most fish, though they don't have the body width to pull water very hard. They do like to tangle themselves around structure, which is a serious problem. If one gets around a limb, there's no pulling it free.

Reading about bass and vision, they see contrasting colors and movement more than anything. So even in murky water, a dark and sparkly junebug color will really stand out against the brown and green background.

Also they feel the vibrations and hear the baits. Some fish rely on that more than others.

I release pretty much everything else but I just can't do it with the snakeheads. After you catch a few and see how agressive they are and how they hunt, it's easy to see why they are bad for an ecosystem like in the US where the larger predators (bass and gar around here) are sort of lazy and stupid.

Went fishing today for the first time in ~4 years. Small pay-lake/ pond. Maybe a dozen other guys there. I took out two poles. Use a pink powerbait worm, floated ~8" from bottom. Then powerbait trout dough About 12" from bottom. #6 hook and #10 hook for the worm. Not a single bite.

Hard to pick where to fish. It's about 75 degrees here, super warm for trout right? They stocked the pond March 22nd.

Saw some crawdads. Took the dog walking that was fun. But bummed about getting skunked. Havn't caught a fish in maybe 10 years.
>>
>>982471
They are more fun to catch imo but you will never kill enough to get rid of them so whatever. They guard their fry into juvenile adulthood. Most fish don't do that. They aren't going anywhere.

Even if it's 75F, the water might still be a lot cooler. But I hate fishing spots like that. Look around for a good little pond or lake that people wouldn't think to fish. Highly pressured lakes are a bitch to fish so I try and go to little lakes in industrial and commercial areas that may or may not have "No Trespassing" signs.
>>
>>982497
This is why I just release them.
They're here to stay, there is no reason to needlessly take somethings life for no reason. They're invasive but fishermen killing their catches isn't going to do fuck all for the problem.

If everybody who fishes the area does the right thing and kills them, it's possible to slow them down or keep them in check. The one local lake where I used to get a lot of them, I got rid of a bunch of adults and I know other people are doing the same and there are definitely less of them now than there were a year or two ago.

The one shoreline I normally fish used to have a handful of big adults and lots of juveniles that would always chase my baits. You could see them any time you were there. Now I rarely even see the things in that area.

I know it will be hard to eradicate them but there are enough anglers around here and if we actually educate them and teach them to keep the sneks and release the bass, it will help a ton.

I disagree. If you really think about how long it takes most fish to reach adult breeding size, there is a good chance they will get caught by somebody before they have thousands of fry in populated areas with lots of fisherman like South Florida.

I've seen fisherman destroy bass populations in places and I have seen the sneks slow down in some areas just over a couple years of me and some other people targeting them. Never going to completely get rid of them but we can definitely keep them in check.
>>
>>982500

Do peacocks target juvie sneks?
>>
>>982539
Probably. I mean any predator fish will go for smaller fish. IIRC, the peacocks were introduced to help with the booming cichlid population (or at least that was part of the reason). But the younger sneks are good at hiding and they love to go in rocks and grass and shit which is part of the reason they are able to take over new ecosystems.

Also the sneks are limited to a smaller area and the peacocks aren't as widespread as largemouth or other natives and established invasives so they aren't always in the same bodies of water. I have only caught sneks and peacocks in the same body of water one time.

>>982795
It'd take a special breed of moron. The kind that if you refused to even acknowledge their "IS THAT A GUN!? HE HAS A GUN!" nonsense they might go so far as to accost you or attempt to take the case from you. Provided you involved the authorities following such an event you might get some rabid hoplophobe thrown in the county slammer for at least a few hours, maybe even shacked up with some truly unsavory characters if individual cells aren't available. It could only end badly for them.

Of course odds are none of that would happen. Even if they went full "CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM!" and called for the cops themselves you'd just end up handing the case over to a cop (if they even bothered to take it) and they'd open it and go "Yeah, that's a fishing rod. Go catch the big one." and you'd be on your merry way. If you even bothered to wait for the cops to show. I sure wouldn't stick around if nobody there has the legal authority to detain me.

Seems like with all the different lures out there this doesn't apply.

Maybe older bass just learn what's a healthy food source, like bait fish, and stock to it. Meaning they just prefer other food against a random one they never saw before. But if course when they're hungry they'd go after whatever they find
>>

What are your favorite jerkbaits guys?
>>
>>983046
Really fond of the original Shadow Raps (haven't used a SR Shad yet) but they're pretty much the only jerkbaits in my tackle bag. I picked up a couple when Dick's had them on sale a year or so ago. After a couple wildly successful days on two different bodies of water I was hooked. Dick's ran another sale for Buy-One-Get-One on all Rapala lures so I turned around and filled out two 3600's, one with standard SR's and another with the deep running model.

I think the only oddball in my jerkbait boxes is a Megabass Ito Vision 110 FX. I absolutely love the thing but, like the handful of Pop Max lures I have, there's this looming terror of losing it. Every time I tie it on it's like throwing a $20 bill on a hook out into the water.

"Bright days, bright colors."
Whites, Neon greens or chartreuse with a lot of reflective fleck, silvers. If you're not working with any sunlight to help it pop, the water is particularly murky, and/or you're running deep consider darker colors. Black, black and blue, purple. Maybe go with something that rattles to ping the lateral line when visibility is really bad.

They essentially don't exist online save for a few pictures found from a japanese angler's blog entry from 2010. I think I'd personally rather have a 2-Piece rod and just carry it in a rod tube/bag or make a tube from some PVC and a couple end caps.

You can make a mold out of those by pouring silicone around them or have a CNC shop mill you a mold out of aluminum for a 150 bucks or so.

If you go the silicone route let it cure in a pressure pot to remove bubbles. It's gotta be a high temp silicone though for the plastisol pour as its hot.

Look up make lure. Make lure on YouTube sells an alumalite trademark product that cures hard. It would work better than silicone probably. YouTube them and Paul Adams or another lure making channel.

Sooo, I'm drunk, the board is slow, and I've another question so why not? Last time I asked I think I was accused of Monica (Friends) level of anal retentiveness but...

Anybody else keep inventory on their tackle? I know the pros and people heavily invested do it for insurance purposes in case of theft, capsizes, or whatever... but I'm just genuinely anal/OCD. I'm slowly working on this half-assed spreadsheet with various fields like the company's product code/stock number, the damned UPC, and even whether or not something in my collection is discontinued because god forbid I run out... but I'd really to see if anybody else has a solution.

If I had the know-how I'd love to have some sort of in-house version of Fishidy/Fishbrain where I could log all my tackle, the catches on said tackle, the weather conditions, and so-on so I could keep track of what works when and if I'm running out of said what... but that'd be a project months or years in the making considering my /g/-fu is weak these days.

14# is the lightest you want to go unless you're casing a Sabino rig or something for baitfish. 14# Will land specks, white trout, and flounder. With that light a setup, you might as well just cut your line if you hook a big red or black drum. The big problem with using lighter tackle off of piers is getting the fish from the surface to the pier deck.

Most people where I go use 30-40# test on spinning reels rated for that weight, pole rated likewise. Some folks use crab nets or gator trebles to get the fish fully landed. One of the most common ways people lose fish off of piers is when the fish runs for cover and wraps around a piling. You have to have your drag set pretty tight to avoid this. People around you will reel in and get out of your way if it's obvious you've hooked a big one. As a last resort, you may have to walk a big, tired out fish to shore in order to lay hands on it.

People going for blacktip or bonnethead shark use at least a 60# setup. Sharks a the only thing folks go for off of pier near me where a wire leader is most always essential.

You can usually find decent, usable combos in the 35# range at Walmarts and Academys near saltwater in the $50 - $100 range.
>>
>>983844
Live bait is the goto if you have the means to keep it alive long enough. Live shrimp, cigar minnows, pogeys, croaker, and gamefish fingerings work good. Take your ultralight setup to catch live baitfish on little pieces of cutbait. Set your drag very loose and use a weak hook, or the occasional big fish will wreck your pole.

Cutbait and dead shrimp are low investment, and what is most often used. You get more catfish and stingrays though. Usually, you can start with a half pound of fresh, dead shrimp, and catch enough fish that aren't usually worth eating to use as cut/live bait.

A few people use strictly artificial bait. The only time that I do is when I'm either out of natural bait, or the fish are biting so good and often that using a spoon or a jig is actually faster than rebaiting.
>>
>>983682
In terms of strength, I'd say the goture is far better it can land 14" Jacks and held it self to 20" snook but it only about 7 months and a tarpon to snap it in 3 parts. Now the plusinno lasted more than a year with the guides intact until a barracuda snapped it in half. The kastking was my dad's and I think he still has it but the guides were shit.

these are the worms i've got. not really sure how to rig or fish them though.
we dont have any tackle shops around here unfortunately, can't find minnows anywhere.

what weight would you use with powerbait? everything i've looked up said go as light as possible but i keep seeing people launching 1oz sinkers way out into the resovoir, and still catching fish. not sure if they're running slip sinker rigs or something.
>>
>>982267
Because garter snakes eat a lot of small fish and worms. That's primarily what they eat, also why they spend time in water.
>>
Do you guys eat what you catch? Is it any better than supermarket fish?
>>
>>984188
Those worms need to be actively worked. Have one pole soaking bait and one for lures like the pink worm, spoon, or spinner. Try points and areas with features or where current meets still water.

Ask someone local who is catching them. Just lie and say you want to try one trout because you have never caught one. Most people will help unless they are fags.
>>
>>984201
Also yes 6lb pure fluorocarbon is fine. If it's super clear water go 5 or 4lb test.

I recommend P Lines new fluorocarbon line. Learn to tie knots for it. Fluorocarbon ties different than mono.

I swear you'll never hear a fisherman say that a breed of fish tastes bad. I've heard people say bluegill taste good...

I sell fish in a grocery store fish department. You will be lied to if you ask if the fish just came in today, but to be fair people are so obnoxiously picky about only ever eating things that just came off the skid it's kinda justified. Any grocery store will also be following FIFO "First In First Out" basically ensuring that you never get the freshest fish.

If you want fish straight from the boat either buy it direct from the fisherman or catch it yourself because you're not getting it from a middleman.

Ehhhh. Most fish is good but some are objectively bad. You wouldn't eat bullhead catfish or blue catfish.

>>984183
Where you fish is important too. Be it about where the fish find comfort or where other anglers have already fished them out
>>
>>984210
It depends on the body of water man. I would work the pink worm on a drop shot or wacky rigged oder a slip bobber with a bobber stop.

Kastmaster and blue fox spinners and mepps spinners kill trput. Gold or silver almost always work.

Just ask a guy you see catching one or ask if he can help you. Find an old guy and just be humble. If he's a grump ask the next dude.

A resovoir with stocked trout is odd. Stocked fish act differently than wild ones and resovoirs cause strange behaviors sometimes.

Read on a local forum or watch a YouTube video with the ody of water you're in.

Spawn sacs work good too usually.
>>
>>984188
Where I live, people fish for reservoir trout with a sliding sinker rig (usually 1/2 or 1/4 oz), 18" leader, and a hook with either powerbait dough, powerbait eggs, or mice tails which is an artificial foam egg with a worm attached. What those three have in common is that they float up off the bottom so the fish see them better. I don't think those worms float though.
>>
>>984205
I notice no difference in effectiveness between painted and unpainted heads. Plus paint looks like trash when it chips.
>>
>>984223
They do and power bait has a "mouse tail" version as well.

I'll look at Angler's Log. I've been using Fishbrain and my only real complaint is that they don't have a majority of my lures available to add in their "My Tacklebox" section of the app. But how could they? The amount of tackle out there would be impossible to keep updated on their end. That leads to my biggest gripe with apps which is not being in complete control of the data and being limited to the available fields of the app.

Right now I use a combination of a weatherproof fishing journal and my cell phone's camera/GPS/EXIF/etc capabilities to log time, weather conditions, location and such. I think with enough time I'll be able to come up with a pretty solid system. The outline is already in my head, putting it to practice is the hard part. A plain old spreadsheet is working and helps get the idea out but is kind of ugly.

I'm gonna start looking at Codecademy's revamped HTML/CSS course and probably PHP... then see if I can make some kind of WebUI with fancy buttons, images, and all that nifty shit. Maybe get more advanced and be able to identify what works when and why, or at least theorize about it with actual data.

Bass Pro charges too much IMO. Same for Gander Mountain with the Northland brand and they're not even listed on their website so far as I can tell. As mentioned I picked them up in store when I was up in PA.

Ebay wasn't a bad way to go and my math says I'm making #3 and #4 jig spinners at about $0.50 USD each but you can easily cut it down to $0.25 by going through dedicated lure parts suppliers. The downside is you'll often be buying in bulk and end up with more than one person would ever need even if they ran their own guide service.

Off the top of my head Jann's Netcraft and Lure Parts Online are two of the bigger sellers of components. BarbsTackle.com caters to Walleye anglers but if you want some truly unique colorado blades they're the place to go if you don't mind paying $1.50 per blade. They also sell beads, weights, and even pre-rigged crawler harnesses. Really nice stuff but I've never gone bottom-bouncing for walleye and couldn't justify the price for the blades myself.

>>984200
I'm catch-and-release 99% of the time but I do love crappie and perch and you won't find either in the supermarkets around here even though there are plenty to be had. Big chain supermarkets can only order what they can order and that leaves a lot of great tasting species off the menu unless you're an angler or buying from one. But also this >>984203 - Most folks who catch and eat fish aren't likely to have found one they don't like.

I asked her some shit about what's going on when I try to go in, and her answer was basically "I don't want to make it a relationship so fast" because she so scared of shitty dudes so I backed off and didn't talk to her much for a few days and didn't see her for like a week and then when I finally stopped in for coffee last week she was so excited that I came around again after her basically saying I'm not getting pussy just yet and she didn't want me to leave.

Idk, there's more to it. With the typical girl it would feel like I'm getting friendzoned and I thought about it myself which was why I brought the shit up to her a couple weeks ago but then we go out like Friday night and after dinner just walking around the waterfront and she's leanin into me a bunch.

I'm just tryin not to fall in love or anything until I see where this is actually going.

I doubt it, I took my fly rod case to the local park when I first got it. My family lives in Minneapolis so I was a little nervous that people might think I was carrying a gun, but even when I did move a real gun (in the case) into my parents house, no one flipped.

Honestly, you can make a legit anchor pretty easily.
I always had wind problems, but then I took my brother's workout dumbbell, wrapped a nylon rope around it, and wrapped it in ducktape.

No joke, its been working for 2 years. I haven't even put new tape on it.
