I'very carried my Swamp rather waki a few times but that was literally just for shits and giggles.

I know a few hema folks that do but that's just because they take them out and have practice sessions out in the hills and stuff..

I would but its illegal. Texas is wierd with laws, mainly because our legislature meets every other year for 3 months. I can legaly carry a full auto machine gun straped to my back but any blade over 5.5 inches is illegal.

It's rarely enforced and no one is going to fuck with you for a 7 inch blade in the woods. But it is the law.

In the last couple of years they really helped improve the knife laws in my sate, even to the point of it being legal to carry sword canes.

I usually wear my Albion Kern on my left hip when I go hiking. Never know when there might be reivers about.
>>
>>973774
I used to carry the longest machete Ontario makes. Didn't use it enough hunting, hiking and canoeing to justify the size.

Now I just carry a good 4 to 6 inch fixed blade, a tiny folder and a Fiskars folding Japanese saw. If I go with alot of people, I'll bring my 18" Estwing axe.

A buddy used to bring an Ontario katana machete, but he had to make excuses to find something to do with it. Made a good fire poker.
>>
>>974415
A 5-6 inch blade is ideal. Estwings are shit axes you are far better off using pretty much any 20 oz hatchet. Machetes have a use but if you aren't 20 miles or less from the ocean they have no use for you.

I use my Estwing efficiently enough. I've got a wee little Finnish Gerber that does all the things baton fags are proud of, since I put a proper grind on it. I like the looks of those little hatchets that start with a "M" or "W" I've seen in the axe threads, but I've heard their old world craftsmanship is somewhat hit or miss. Not in the budget anytime soon anyway.

I've always had a dream of doing a reenactment sort of thing where a group of people get together and go on a long journey through some wilderness while dressed as Roman legionnaires with the accompanying equipment, to try and experience the expeditions of discovery that some Roman generals did in lieu or as well as military campaigns.
>>
>>975153
Guns are rather heavily regulated in the US compared to pretty much every other sort of weapon other than modern materiel, which can be owned as well but only with great effort. It just looks to the rest of the world that we have no regulations because guns are a sacred cow to their governments that good citizens should not be even thinking about owning.

The weight of the sword on my shoulders doesn't bother me. It is the weight of the blade on my soul. The knowledge that I am the superior man, and the superior blade wielder. The burden that I may be forced to kill again... this time it will be slicing the flesh of my opponents and not a duel of the minds.

This... this is why I carry my sword when I journey in the woods.

No. You would have to be retarded to do that. If your need a weapon, and you don't have access to or are not allowed to have a firearm on you, the woods are full of spears. Which are superior to swords in every way. At least in the hands of untrained peasants who have never gone through actual combat training with a sword.

Honestly, if you want big blade, get a sami knife or a machete with a fairly thick blade. Swords are no good. They are weapons, not tools. They'd be great for cutting through shrubbery and other tasks like that, but that's about it. Also, if you're planning on actually using it as a weapon, make sure to at least to some research on HEMA.

I guess it depends on where it is. I.e. innawoods, I kind of expect people to have some sort of weapon on them, but not in the city where there are cops with guns everywhere anyway,
I feel that a lot of people who go out of their way to have a weapon on them at all times should just get a piece of body armor, as that is way more effective at preserving life than any gun could ever be. That being against guns and knives. Not much use against say, a bear. Therefore, I think it's more appropriate to be armed innawoods than in "public", whatever you can call "public", I guess.

Yes, because a sword is strictly a weapon. It's not designed for "bushcraft", or whatever you want to call it. It's probably great for cutting through shrubbery and shit like a machete, but that's where its usefulness ends too. A sherpherd's axe, or an axe in general, as well as a knife, will always be better to carry around than a fucking sword.

Kind of true. I still think the machete itself would be better, as that is actually designed for chopping,
whereas the sword is not. It's a common misconception that swords are used for chopping/slashing,
but the reality is that they are stabbing weapons. The way they're balanced is the reason why they wouldn't excel at that task either.

Califag here. CA has literally no state restrictions on knives IF it's open carry; i.e. you can't legally concealed carry a knife. However, folding knives in the closed position are explicitly listed in the statute as not counting as a concealed carrying a knife, so you can carry whatever folder in your pocket you want. For open carry of a fixed blade, there any obviously multiple methods, but the statute explicitly says that anything "hung openly from the waist", e.g. in a scabbard, is not considered concealed. So, theoretically, you could walk around with a sheathed sword at your side like it was 200 years ago and it would be perfectly legal.

That being said, there are a few issues.
1) some fucking meme weapons like brass knuckles, butterfly knives (I think), etc. are still illegal, because "muh scary weapons", even though lots of them (e.g. nunchuks) are more dagerous to the wielder than anything else.
2)There is another statute that bans carrying "dirks and dangerous weapons." Whether a knife is a weapon in a particular context is a matter for the courts to weed out, but it does make open carry less totally 100% kosher.
3) Even if it is legal to carry e.g. a sword, you be the cops probably won't realize that and will give you a hard time over it. So, similar to firearm open carry, really.
4) Many (most?) cities/counties have their own knife laws, so in e.g. LA it's illegal to carry anything over 2.5 inches (unless explicitly carried as a tool for some reasonably immediate use. You could probably argue with a judge about every day carry as a tool, but again now we're getting into thin ice.)
>>
>>1003219
Some cops may be cool enough to let it slide, but if you carry something, knowing that it's legal, you're just putting yourself in more trouble than it's worth.

>>974251
>not just befriending the Ents so they can take care your adversaries

A mountain lion is no threat to a seasoned swordsmen. We who train the sword develop a sixth sense that lets us sense danger no matter from where it comes, a mountain lion has no chance to approach a real swordsman unnoticed.
And the mountain lions can sense that to, they instinctively feel the superior senses and awareness of a trained sword fighter, it would never mistake it for prey.
Thus, both apex predators, lion and man, live in harmony and don't bother each others.

Animals are smarter than you think, theychoose their prey very carefully, and they don't choose a trained swordsman, because it is way to dangerous for a quick lunch. Even when animals are desperate, a short show of the blade is enough to discourage them, its like the deadly cobra showing her neck shield, instinct just tells them to fuck off.
It is possible that a wounded large animal like a grizzly is bold enough to charge a swordsman, in which case it will be a fair and good fight. Despite my training and my love for the old French masters I'd recommend a Katana on this occasion. To dispatch such a rage animal you need deep cutting penetration, and thats where the jap blades excel.
>>
When I lived in northern arizona bout 15 years ago I used to walk around mountain lion country with an oversized machete. Came across an elk carcass next to some water that didn't seem to be more than a few hours old at most, and was hardly touched beyond a watermelon sized hole. Didn't smell like much either.

Still amazed to this day how my 12 year old ass didn't end up as food that day desu. Seriously doubt I could've ever fought something like a big cat off, even with a razor sharp 40" blade unless I had hit it square in the eyes or something
>>
>>1005681
I do know that animals can be discouraged from simply brandishing a sharp implement.
They never could train horses to charge pike formations back in the day.
However, what I'm getting at, is that if the scare tactics don't work, you're pretty much fucked unless you're Jaime fucking Lannister.
And you would want a stabbing weapon, btw. Slashing doesn't do enough damage in the short amount of time you have. Therefore, a double-edged sword with a wide blade would be the best bet.
You have to keep in mind that the katana was only a sidearm, and therefore not developed for any sort of prolonged fighting. Sure, they're nice and sharp and all that, but there are better alternatives.
>>
>>1006156

Well. That's a movie, first of all. Depicting the fucking Predator and what seems to be a trained swordsman.
You wouldn't fight something like a bear the way you'd fight a predator anyway.
Deep cuts are nice and all, but actually accomplishing that is harder, which is why most swords are stabbing weapons in the first place.
If I'm not completely fucking incorrect, with a few exceptions, swords that were intended as "primary weapons" are usually stabbing weapons. Unless you can somehow cut the tendons of whatever you're up against and disable it immediately that way, you have a much bigger chance of causing serious harm by stabbing. Besides, performing a thrust is easier in very close quarters because you don't wind it up the way you do a swing. Which is why the
"military-grade" swords from way back were designed as stabbing weapons.
>>
>>1006354
>Which is why the
>"military-grade" swords from way back were designed as stabbing weapons.
Why was the saber then the goto weapon for pretty much everyone?
>>
>>1006357
What? It wasn't. At least not when melee weapons were the main armament for any army. Like in medieval Europe.
Also, I'm pretty sure I said "with a few exceptions", those being things like scimitars and falchions/messers.
>>
>>1006357
>>1006358
Sorry, I fucked that up. What I meant to say was that _military_ swords were typically stabbing weapons, what I had in mind was exclusively European weapons like gladii, longswords, arming swords, rapiers, most likely greatswords, etc. Other more slashing-oriented swords did exist alongside those, but they were never issued as military weapons in any capacity because hacking and slashing doesn't do well when you're in a formation.

>>
>>994486
Nope, Glock 20 or 40 are best innawoods handgats
>>
>>1015648

Because it can't do anything better than any of the other tools I carry.

A sword makes a poor axe, and a poor hatchet due to blade profile and weight distribution. Too cumbersome for fine work like gutting or skinning, and I've never had the need for a machete.

A sword also weighs as much as a handgun + ammo, or potentially even as much as a light rifle, while objectively being a worse hunting or fighting tool.

The sword is obsolete. If I needed a non-projectile edged weapon I would rather have a well made spear. At least I could use that as a hiking pole.

Dude, just stop. For starters, I'd consider myself a proficient hunter, and swordsman of many styles, and I'd never be so arrogant to think that an animal could never get the better of me. Other animals are inherently unpredictable to us, which is what makes them dangerous. Anyone can be caught off guard, at any time. Studying swordsmanship aims to lessen the incidence, and to cope when it happens. Plus, I've trained my senses seriously for ~15 years (and I only have the 5), and I still get caught off-guard. True, I'm annoyed, and try to cover it up when it happens, but it still happens.

And fuck off with that aura bullshit, this isn't Bleach. With any predator, the decision to attack is weighed against the risk of injury, essentially, whether the food you'll get is worth the fight. It's all about what you look/sound like to them, not some hocus pocus shit.

And have you ever actually seen a grizzly bear? And wounded as well?! That would not be a fair fight, a swing of its paw would break your arm like a twig. Or even if you landed a killing blow, it's likely to fall on you, where you'll suffocate.

Also, don't call yourself a swordsman and back it up with sports fencing, when that's pretty much tag with pipe cleaners. Plus, I bet you use foils. And I bet you use spinning attacks.

Didn't mean to link the flintlock one, but it's true. Fencing is for 1vs1 humans, it's shit for groups, and for animals. Unless all you do is jump around thrusting at them, that might work.
>>
>>1018598
Yeah, practicing Olympic fencing makes you good at just that. Olympic fencing. It's not even in the ballpark of "real" swordplay.

would this make a good sword for /out/ use?
>>
No, I carry an AKM. 30 rounds of 7.62x39 is more effective than sword.

Cringe.

You can carry a knife over 5.5 inches if it's for sporting purposes i.e. Camping, fishing, ect
>>
A sword would be a pretty stupid thing to bring into the woods. I have considered bringing a hunting spear and reducing the local wild pig population.
>>
>>1021720
You're never going to be able to do that with a spear. Not you. You're just going to get yourself killed because you are not trained in hunting with a spear.
>>
>>1021720
Bad idea mate! What he said >>1022294
You are better off with a small sword and do some small game hunting with it. When you have lots of experience you can advance to the Katana, and can go at bigger game, like slaying a deer or a pig.

trust me, i'm an expert.

If I was going to carry something that big I'd carry a rifle or shotgun.

Hunting with swords was the privilege of nobility. Spears are for peasants. It was this training that made them such deadly warriors and swordsmen.
>>
>>1022601
hunting with swords is a sport fit for kings.
>>
>all this talk of swords for self defense

Do you guys live in bongistan or something? I take my .357 Magnum when ever I go inna woods
>>
>>1022609
Cringe. .357 magnum is too weak for "innawoods" shit.
>>
>>1022605
That horse is thick as fuck.
>>
>>1022609
Also, revolvers aren't fucking suitable for self defense purposes. For obvious reasons. They're even less suitable than swords, which is also a retarded idea.

U shore trolled me m8.
