When you get into a blade off with a white suburban boy... like me... Pic related, just got it yesterday after a 9 1/2 week wait.

I just got that tiny crkt in the middle. I think it's the untralight knife I've always been searching for. It's great for skinning and woodworking alike.

Top right, black blade, brown handle. What is it? A little tacticool but I like the look of it.

That is a BK-15 with the optional extra Micarta handles. Yeah I really like it, the BK-16 and 17 are "sister" knives, same general dimensions, same handles just different point designs. It may look a bit tactcool, but it is well designed, made of 1095 (so a coating is a good thing) and generally good for the money. Unfortunately the are discontinued.

>>956834
It's a Rock Creek Nyala. It's a great knife, has a stupid geometry (.25 thick, really it's a pretty version of the BK-2). Rock Creek (the knife division of Hanwei swords) is no longer in business, they had to close a few years ago due to a factory fire.

It's a shame they were one of a few actual Chines companies (by that I mean, chines owned, designed, and manufactured by actual craftsman, not wage laborers) that was putting out good stuff. The knife directly below the BK-15 is also from them, it has a non-stupid geometry.

I'm planning my next trip and I want to do more /out/ing then my current trip through SEA. I am going to do one of the three passes in Nepal and then hitchhike it from North India all the way to thw south while camping for as much as I can along the way.

>I want to buy a kukri in Nepal and use it for general knife use. So thoughts?

Keep it oiled as you are able. Most traditional kukri these days are made from non-stainless steel. Maybe force a patina. I had one that would literally rust in a minute before my eyes because I was not removing the previous rust properly.

They're heavy hacking blades. Not ideal for clearing tall grass (too heavy&short). Pretty good for vines and similar brush. OK but not ideal for shopping down small trees. And again, they're heavy. If you do decide on one make sure to bring a small sharpening stone.
>>
Knives are instruments of violence and the owning of a knife is supporting the murder industry. If you're going to own a knife at least grind the tip off to show people that you're not going to harm them. Why do you need a tip anyway unless you want to hurt people? But it's best if you just destroy them anyway.

Not sure about the oiling bit. I'll have to do my research on that.

Definitely plan on bringing a sharpening stone from the states.

My choice to go with a kukri is out of practicality. I'd rather buy one in Nepal then go through the hassel of declaring a knife through customs. Also feels right to travel those lands using their traditional tools. In my experience the locals respect travelers that use/wear their traditional clothes and tools. And if I get to chop up a poo in India while they're raping a foreigner that'll be a bonus.

The cutting edge yes, but not the tip. The tip is used for stabbing and causing organ damage. You don't need a tip. Pens are for writing, forks are eating, knife tips are used for stabbing. Thanks for proving my point.

Why is it so hard to believe that a cutting tool shouldn't have a sharp tip? It's not bait, it's simple logic. The tip is all but useless for most smart people but for people who want to cause harm its horridly dangerous. No tip=no stab. It's not bait, it's logic. Learn it.

So, fine if you're going /out/ for a while
>>
Just got an ESEE 4, how did I do? I'll post pics once it gets here.
>>
>>958399
Pretty good value. You'll pobably want to add courser and finer stones (get the next kit up that has 5 stones). The diamond stones for the system make things ALOT faster, especially on really hard stainless.

These days, I only use the system for knives that I don't want to risk marring freehand. Put a little masking tape on the blade where you clamp the guide.

You can epoxy the rods to thinner diamond, steels, and natural stones. This gives you more and cheaper options with more sharpening surface compared to what Lansky sells for it.
>>
>>958631
Oh my god, thanks!

I'm thinking about getting the starter pack now and getting more stones down the road. I found the standard set for 40-ish bucks (yuropoor) and it seems like good value for what it is.

I'm kind of limited when it comes to freehanding stuff, I'm scared I'll fuss it up. The clamp system seems to be pretty retard-proof.

>>
>>958767
The basic set is closer to $25 here. 40 is still ok. The clamp and rods will last a lifetime. The stones will probably last you years. You'll just have to get more mineral oil when that runs out. It is pretty fool-proof. I use the 17° slot for an initial edge, then take the burr off with a fine stone at 20°. The only time I use the 25° slot is on wider blades.

So I just got the kit and gave it a whirr. It's a pretty good system so far, just playing around with it sharpening my pocket knife. The hardest thing on it is probably 1) setting the clamp just right and 2) counting the pulls on the stone. It's easy for me to get carried away sharpening and then I realize I'll have an off-center blade. What do I do then?

>>
>>960061
It's no big deal. The angle of the blade to stone is constantly changing a bit in relation to the center. The longer the blade, the more you'll notice it. Using a wider homemade stone/rod assembly reduces this somewhat, but it's not really necessary, as long as you keep the knife in the same place when changing stones.

Personally, I like to use a small circular motion with coarser stones. With medium to fine stones, I push towards the edge (they tell you to pull because it's safer). When I switch to a steeper angle at the end, I strop the edge very lightly, using only the weight of the finest stone. Finally, I strop the blade backwards and free handed on a strip of unfinished leather. The back of a belt works ok.

There's really no right or wrong way. You may not want to use the finest stone if you want the blade to have more "teeth". For a more scalpel-like edge, you might want to keep the lowest angle, and polish with the finest stone more. It really depends on the steel type, and how you plan to use it. You'll figure out what works for you. Don't worry about sharpening too much at first. It gives you a good excuse to buy more knives later. Have fun.

Is there any special benefit to owning a broken-back style seax? They seem silly to me but some people seem to love them?
>>
>>960470
I watched a couple of vids on the topic of using Lanskys specifically and it said:

Coarse stone: Build a burr on one side, turn over, build burr on other side, swap to Medium
Medium stone: Build a burr, flip, build a burr.
Fine stone: build a small burr, flip, build a "micro-burr" and then hone on leather.

Yesterday I sharpened it, today I did it again and fucked up my blade (or most likely I just used a different angle and just got rid of the edge). I'll give it a bit more work on the fine stone and get my strop hanging again.
>>
>>960756
NOTE: Take all I say with a large pinch of salt, I'm no expert on this subject.

My (very amateur) opinion would be that you can sharpen it more easily without any bends or shit in the blade while still having a nice point.

Basically what I encounter with my bend-in-the-blade-side knives is that my stones tend to slip and lose balance on the bend part, even with the Victorinox quick-sharpeners. With a broken-back seax, you don't have this problem.
>>
>>960904

There is no need to deliberately form a burr again on the medium and fine stones once a burr has been formed from heel to top on both sides on the coarse stones.

Actually, burr formation should be avoided if possible on subsequent stones as it wastes metal and leaves you with a burr you will have to remove at the end of the sharpening process.
>>
Whats /out opinion on Condor knives? I kinda wanna get something from them because it's not expensive and now I only have carbon Mora, no. 8 Opinel and one basic SAK. I don't really need it but why not?
>>
>>960950

I used to think more highly of them than I do now.

I think they don't always do a great job in manufacturing. I've gotten several with handles with unground pins. I've had some machetes chip excessively when just breaking down some soft brush.

If you're looking for a machete.... a $15 tramontina is probably a better way to go than a $60 condor.

ib4 some condorfriend is angry. soory, they just don't always seem to be put together correctly. I have one of their brush axes(?)... it's like a flat axe blade and a sharp hook, and it's great. They aren't always bad.

>>960756
i'm teaching myself blacksmithing in order to make a seax. my rationale is thus: it's heavy like the batonfaggotry knives, but with a more consistent blade shape and broader angle (like a hatchet), so it is usable as a small froe, so i can use it to make blanks for carving as well as splitting kindling. my intent is to put oversized handles on them, so i can get a lot more chopping power for a lot less weight- making the seax fully replace the role of a small hatchet (at least for softwoods).

the boken-back style allows for that continuous edge like >>960909 said, but also improves carving and making a more axe-like angle. it also allows you to get a piercing point, even if it's not the stabbing tool of a dagger.
coupled with a narrow-bladed axe/hatchet (for hardwoods) you can get a hell of a lot of woodwork done on a pretty wide variety of woods

Thank you. But is it actually bad to form a burr on the subsequent stones (other than having to stone it away later)?
>>
>>962167

I can't find a fault in your reasoning. Good taste.
>>
>>963140
It's fine to burr unless your worried about using up an expensive knife. Burring is the easiest way to see if the whole blade has taken the new angle.

A couple of alturnitves are using a magnifying device to check your work, or using a permanent marker on the edge before sharpening. The marker thing doesn't work as well when using oil.

Once you get a feel for things, you won't need to burr when you're lightly touching up the blade with a fine steel, strop, or very fine ceramic rods. I will usually touch a blade up 8 or 9 times before I actually reset the edge to the point of burring.

Interestingly, people in some trades actually want a burr for cutting. The burr bites into animal matter really well. The sharpness doesn't last long though, and they may reburr dozens of times per day.
>>
>>963140
>>963296

It's not that it's bad per-se to form a burr on stones after the coarsest, it's just unnecessary and wastes metal.

Also, ideally when you finish sharpening you want to end up with a burr free apex, and so after the first stone it helps to form as little burr as you can.

I really like it. I compare it to the bk16, very similar. 75 bucks vs 100+ for the bk16+micarta scales, the ltwk is thinner, but pinned and i do have one other complaint.
>edge
Seems like i may have gotten an unfinished(?) lemon. The first inch of the edge from the handle seems nice, polished and convex. The rest of the edge looks like your generic factory sharpened grind lines edge. Not worth sending it back, but still.

Generally speaking, what is better for an all purpose /out/ knife? Long blade or short blade?
>>
>>963617

short.

about the only time you'd want a long blade is when slicing bread/cold meat.

Otherwise, you want anywhere from 3'' to a 4.5'' blade.

4.5'' is the longest "general purpose" blade i'd personally carry, and as low as a 2'' blade in a knife that was used primarily for woodcarving.

>>
>>964304

Plucking mushrooms, cut the foot off. You could gut a fish with it.

Why not sharpen it if it's dull?
>>
>>964304
I've used mine pretty extensively. Made a try stick to see how it preformed. It carves well & I seem to have more control than with my other Mora's. The only thing that I've found is it is more difficult to do the "hole through stick" notch. The blade profile is thick limiting how far the point can get into the hole you're trying to carve. Also the 90* spine can be hard on the hand when using the off hand to assist with cuts. The blade is stubby enough though to be able to place the off hand on the handle to assist. I also carved a wood spirit walking stick with it. I used my Benchmade and Marttiini on the walking stick as well. Benchmade was used to harvest the sapling. The Marttiini and Eldris were both used to carve the sprit. All and all I really like the Eldris and I would buy it again. I got the neck knife kit fwiw. I really just wanted the extra button strap.
>>
>>964317
It wasn't dull really, just needed a touchup. I'm used to Moras being razor sharp. This one is now, but I may flatten the grid in the future. Just worried there's not much steel to spare.
>>
>>964344
Yeah. I don't dislike it by any means. I was planning on buying one when they get down to the $11 they should be, but the senpai came through for me. The included fire steel was a nice bonus.

In unrelated news, I just tried out a Mora Compainion for the first time, I bought one (blue) for my gf, and liked it so much that I got one (the green) for my self. Also got a Opinel (carbon No.9) for the first time... After all of these years of being in the knife hobby, I don't know why I never gave them a shot, they are really great. Was not impressed by the Opinel's edge though, but after 10 minutes on the WE, I got it to crazy hair whittling sharp.

>>963514
I would imagine so, the cross guard has a few sharp angles, and the strong of the blade (near the handle) is not that sharp, so could be used with out much worry of dulling the edge.

>>963609
Unfortunately no, it's a peened pommel.

hello /out/ I am going to be making a knife from a pre-tempered and ground blade blank, and I am thinking about what handle material to use, right now I have some Osage-orange (hedge apple) and some bog wood, I like em both but I'm leaning to the Osage, or should I go with something totally different? I've got a few months to decide, but I'll be sure to post pictures of the finished knife when done.
>>
>>964600
im not sure why people are under the assumption that .milspec tactical knaifus are space age murdertech

a grunts knife gets used for all sorts of nasty shit, barely any of which is stabbing a motherfucker. the idea behind military issue knives is timex. if you want a well designed knife for innawoods you are going to need to look elsewhere. if you want a stabby stab baby killing salt knife that makes innawoods twice as hard to deal with then you look at milspec.

depends on what type of specilization your talking about, on hikes i usually have a sharp knife, and an eating knife, sharp knife for cutting rope, carving wood for fires, slicing meat, and a more dull eating type knife for peanut butter, canned cod roe, paté, butter and the like.

saves on mess and means you dont have to baby the edge on the knife that actually has to cut things

11cm max i would say if its our first knife, or infact just generally in that 11-12 cm range for general utility fixed blade, but, its really much more then lenght, its grind, handle shape, blade shape, steel etc,

depends a lot on what your gonna use it for. for a general camp utility blade id recomend something 11-12 ish cm long, with a scandi grind, and then a regular eating knife for food

Not necessarily /out/ related:
Para 3 or Sage 5 as general purpose knife? It will be my first Spyderco and I wanted something that represents quintessentially the brand. Para 3 has compression lock, that blade shape and last but not least is made in usa, on the other hand I feel like it's a flawed knife because of that stupidly big and stupidly positioned lanyard hole that pushes down the clip so much, and the Sage 5 fixes that.

ah, just checked and mine is the 154CM skeletool knife. I think they come in different steels?

>>

>>
>>968785

My skeletool knife isn't flat on one side. There's a bevel on both sides. Again it's the 154cm so maybe they are different?

The old spyderco delica clipit was flat on one side (also well put together and light weight). It was a good knife. I don't really understand the complaint but welcome further explanation.
>>
>>968796
i just assumed it was the same as my freestyle, it's just flat on one side. his looks to be the normal one--not 154cm. so it's using whatever shit 440 steel LM has lying around. my freestyle's knife is so soft i would have to sharpen it every day if it was used for more than tape.

Still carry 154cm Wave/Charge I've used everyday for 10 years. Leatherman replaced the whole thing because of worn out plier guide, at no charge. I've replaced the pocket clip 4 times. Last time I ordered, they were $2.50ea. Paid $10 for 3 extra microbits. Leatherman sent a free hat with them. 15 years left on warranty.

I've owned 6 other multitools in the $50-$150 range. Keep one in wife's glove box. Gave others away to toolless womens and kids.

Wave is best dick extention, period.

Depends on how long you are going to be /out. I'm never away from my camp for more than 3 days, so I don't really need to carry anything, I may strop it on my belt every once in a while.

If I were going to be gone a long time, and I need sharpening on the go, I would probably just pack my Spyderco Sharpmaker, or a Work Sharp field sharpener for Scandi ground knives. But like I've said, I've never been away long enough to really have to think of sharpening, besides a few week hikes, but I don't need my knife as much on those.

The talking is to actually explain what I am doing and more importantly WHY I am doing it. So much of the frustration experienced by novices to freehanding comes because they don't understand WHY they should be doing certain things and how to be absolutely SURE they have achieved the intended goal at each step of the process.

Instead they usually end up trying a bunch of random things they were told on some forums and getting frustrated when their knives don't get sharper, often leading them to give up or waste money on guided systems that don't actually solve the core problems most novice sharpeners experience (failing to reach an apex, or, if they reach and apex, failing to remove the burr).
