reposting from old thread,
want to target an old gravel pit turned section of river
Planning on night fishing, soaking baits for catfish , eels, whatever else wants to eat
also will throw out some shiners in hopes of monster trout or bass etc

what spots would you guys target?
river flows from left to right ( but incredibly slowly) there are also other odd crosscurrents etc
>>
>>942814

there actually isnt any water flowing in from the gravel pond due to low water

also theres a ton of odd crosscurents from difference in depths and possible springs, since this used to be mined for sand/gravel etc

>>
It feel like I actually went into today prepared, skill and tackle wise. Through the calm spots of the bottom of the dam, I jigged the bottom with a crawdad, worm, lizard, and lil minnow. This time I worked it slow, and learned I could actually feel the bottom as I dragged the jig over stones. Kept the line tight and eager to feel that "different" feeling and the subtleness that is often associated with the winter, but the problem is that it never happened.

No fish :(

But damn I had a good experience with the trip to and from the spot. Passed a graveyard and a creek that looked like it could flood up 5 feet due to the erosion around it. Full of weeds, and I think duck weed, that sat in clouds on the 4 inch deep creek. Should have explored more of it since the next spot was a bust + it got windy and cold by the time I did get there. It was just one of those outdoor moments, and havent had one of those in a while even while fishing since ive been fishing too urban.

Sunfish are all nibblers. They will attack fins of other fish. When I'm using rooster tails for sunfish, I'll trim the tail closer to the hook so I can get then with every nibble.

Yeah it's just always suprising when you can actually hook them on hooks that large. Same with the Mayans. They have real small mouths like bluegill but at least larger ones can take down Mepps #2 or like #6 Rapalas since they get larger than the bluegill. I don't even get many bluegill here since the Mayans displaced them, most lakes are probably like 60%-80% Mayan cichlids and 20%-40% bluegill. Mayans hit and fight harder at least, I had a bigger Mayan going hard on that Sebile today but he couldn't get that odd hook in his mouth.

I always liked green sunfish up in IL because they had the larger mouths where even a 4" fish could hit a Mepps #2 easily.
>>
>>942990
Fishing is meditative to me. For an hour or two you just focus yourself on catching the fish, reeling and casting. Probably 2/3 times I go I catch nothing, but damn is it still nice.

Would be nice to catch more though.

Also to add the Mayans are odd. Some days they will go crazy for Rapalas of any size, inlines, etc that replicate fish. Other days they just totally ignore them but if you start throwing real small grubs or bug replica bait, they go nuts.

You gotta find the right spots, the right time, and the right bait. If I'm at one of my regular spots for an hour or two in the afternoon, I can almost always get something. And if I really want to get something and the bass are nowhere to be found, I'll start going for Mayans and bluegill.

These lakes are all fairly highly pressured by fisherman too so it's nice that I can almost always get something since I will watch other people come and go without getting shit, even on live bait.

That's the main reason I put small trebles trailing on my large poppers that have huge kahle hooks. Two things happen. One is that a sunfish will invariable nail it. Two is that I purposely let them play around longer than normal. Sometime a really large bass will hit the sunfish and get that kahle hook.

>pic
>>
>>943030
I'm on a fairly unpressured river. One day this summer I think I found a school of smallie and I got 14 just that day, so I know there are plenty fish in there. I'm just remarkably bad tuning into what they want at the time and where they are.

>>943034
That's a good idea. Kahle in the middle and smaller treble on the end.

I threw out a big topwater for a couple casts right after it got dark tonight and didn't get shit. With the cooler water I really want to get some bass on topwater. I think last year I was having the best luck with them a little after the coldest part of the year, March and April.
>>
>>942990
trust me, as I said it was worth it. Was nice to develop a skill for working them jigs slowly too. Finally get what it feels like to feel the bottom.

>>943020
The only problem is that im pretty anxious to catch some of my first species. Also want to get to that 2/3 catch or no catch ratio since i feel like im at a 9/10
>>
>>943042
Do you have any local tackle shops? Those guys know exactly where to get fish and what they like. Have you tried live bait? Nightcrawlers always deliver for me, even if it's usually just sunfish. Check your state laws on this, but you could hedge your bets by dropping more lines in the water. In NY state you're allowed to have 3 lines out, so one could put worms and a sinker on two rods and use a lure on a third to keep yourself busy. As you keep at it you'll find good spots on the body of water.
>>

>>943042
Sometimes it is better to not catch anything while you practice learning the lure and technique. When you are catching tons of fish you don't really get some zen time to get a feel for the use of the equipment. Doing so opens up better fishing in different areas.

>>943041
After "the big one" got away because a bluegill swallowed the hook, I started doing that with my poppers.
>>
>>943051
Wut did you use to get the little scale pattern on that?

And sometimes when the bite is slow, it forces you to try new baits, new techniques, and new spots that work out better than what you were doing. That's how I ended up finally running Texas rigs.

Thanks. The tolerances on these tiny plugs is insane to get just right. I need to redo some old ones. It is far easier making large and normal sized plugs.

>>943067
I found that having 3 people was the best for using a seine. Two people to hold the seine and bring it up and one person to chase the minnows into the seine. And, best to do it at night. We would get a solid packed 5-gallon bucket of minnows in a single night (when we were kids and didn't know local laws about 100-minnow limit without a dealer license).
>>
>>943071
im planning on making one handheld seine , with 2 poles, maybe about 4 ft wide
then a second one with a frame and a bit of a bag to it so i can hold it downstream and much about above it and send things like crayfish down into it

maybe a third one eventually to use with a second person but i do enough seining at work as that i not super hyped to go out seining AFTER work with someone else

So my buddy and I are planning to take the kayaks down and camp somewhere down in Florida either in late spring or summer. The ideal trip would be catching a peacock bass in freshwater and then go after snook, reds, maybe bonefish, possibly even a tarpon or cobia as well in the brine. Does anyone know of any good locations of where we can camp, but also be close to both types of water to accomplish this goal? Also any tips for fishing down there would be appreciated

>go after snook, reds, maybe bonefish, possibly even a tarpon or cobia as well in the brine

Kek. I'm an SoFL Native and if you find all these fish in a single trip I'm selling all of my gear.
Peacock dont travel much further than Broward County, and they're mostly found in canals that travel through and around housing. Most salt water beach camping is reserved at least 1 year in advance, in the Everglades.
Your best bet is to spend a day in the keys and try to catch all the salt water fish you can find - Then urban explore for some canals with some shiners. FWC has a nice canal guide, but there are terrible neighborhoods that one would have to pass through.
TLDR You might need to rethink your goals
>>
>>943134
Yeah I figured I was stretching a little much (just an overall idea of what I would want to target), but that's why I am asking here and around to try and get some realistic goals, so I can have a gameplan and be prepared accordingly. What would your top 3 fish to target inshore be? Appreciate the good start though

You probably won't get the peacocks but it will be the best for saltwater without having to charter a boat every single day.

It's mostly for salt though.

For a dark freshwater bass lure then shadow rap has a "carbon" color which is pretty dark as well.
>>
>>943578
What is this? A lure for ants?
>>
>>943578
I bought one of those Shadow Raps and have yet to really use it. Maybe one day I will use em a bit more. I just remember the Shadow Raps, one of them is floating and one is sinking and one has 2 trebles while the other has 3. I specifically avoided the one with 3 hooks.

And that dark grey isn't the same as jet black or purple/blue in the dark or extra murky water.

How do you guys "read" a body of water to see where to hit? I find myself lost on "big" water, not knowing where to fish.
>>
>>943653

Depends on the species and time of year.

In general though, there is "structure"- geographic features underwater such as humps, drop offs, inside turns, "funnels," etc which attract fish. And the is "cover" - weed beds, rocks, docks, submerged junk. These are also important.

I locate structure with navionics boating maps online and on my phone. I find cover by experience and with sonar.

Learning seasonal movements that fish go through involving the two above elements, year after year, eventually you know how to approach a new body of water.

Just do the same thing you would in a pond. Finding spots to fish from shore on a big body of water can take awhile just because of its size. I normally just drive around and look for spots that look like there might be fish and try it out.

Places like dams, rip rap, docks, boat ramps, and inlets/outlets are good spots to start. Any areas with lots of submerged vegetation and trees are good, but can take awhile to find or you can't fish from shore.

If you're targeting bass and they're spawing they'll ideally want to make their bed on gravel/harder bottom instead of mud so that's a good place to start.

Also, look for a current in the lake. It's usually easier to see on windy days, but there will always be fish somewhere along that current.

It would be easy to constantly get shit that big in saltwater too, but requires a boat. When I go down the street to a little pond in a business park, best I can hope to do is ~5lb bass or 24"+ sneks. Largemouth over 2lb are fun to catch anyway.

And then pic is my buddy again, I was lookin on his FB and he got 4 around this size. I think this one is a Northern Pike. The one before is a Muskie I believe. He had one more big muskie and then a Tiger Muskie which is a hybrid of the two.

Also almost bought one of those Vortex rods because they are still $20 and easily worth twice that. Only problem is they have 6'6" M and MH or 5'6" UL. O don't need another 6'6" M spinning combo and I'm tired of <6' UL rods with absolutely no backbone.

Idk why they don't offer more in a 6'-7' "L" or "ML" size. Something that could realistically work with 4lb-6lb line and be good for big panfish and small bass. A rod that will cast 1/16oz-1/14oz lures and won't buckle when a 14" bass decides to dive in some weeds.

Am I the only one? I really like those 2000-2500 size reels but there aren't many rods to match them. Best bet is a M with slower action.

that is fucking funny as shit because i deleted the part of my post saying "its basically a mickey finn with a tail.."

hooks: yeah that happens. ebay has what you need. find a good generic hook. better to buy in bulk than get ass raped buying dozens of specific types. tiemco's will put a drain on the budget.

hackle: can get costly but can last quite a while

universal color: nope thats why you see people with boxes of the same pattern in diff colors. For me "universal color" is olive over white. with flash or sometimes not. this color seems to always work at some point where ever i'm at.

youll need some stick on eyes eventually as well.
>>
>>944096
Im hesitant to skimp on a hook, that's the last part of you in the chain of shit that leads to the fish.
The daichi or hpwever its spelled hooks seem nice, and at ~ $5/20 thats about a quarter a hook for hooks ive heard good things about. But I'd consider cheaper name brands too.

Maybe I can justify a few different things. I'd definately need white for streamers, and I imagine a moderate brown or dark tan would do for most other things (adams, crawfish claws, crab claws, foam beetle legs, etc) and I figure black would cover wooly buggers, midges, ants, beetles.

So I think ive got it figured? Maybe olive too but ive never had much luck with olive
>>
>>944072
Try putting some shrimp or squid under a float and casting up-current, letting it drift down, reel, repeat. You might get snagged less and it is more active than regular bait soaking. Glad to hear you had some action though.

>>

On Cranberry, yes, I would. Especially if it's that close to the boat launch and that's where you are accessing the ice.

Depends on species though. Yellow perch tend to like 20-25 fow in my experience. 30-40 on Lake George. Trout can be anywhere this time of year.

yeah for the better fly hooks thats what they run when not bought by the box which is pricey when you do the math on all the components together. as far as colors stick to what you know for the areas you fish. you only need a few basic colors to begin with. for the buggers youll need some strung marabou and chenille both are very versatile to tie lots of different flys..walk around the sewing knitting section of a store and youll get ideas real fast. take some creepshots of milfs for me while youre there.

>They are easy to catch every day. You need to change your methods, equipment, and location.
I don't think I could try any harder. I was trying top water, mid water and bottom water lures.
Swim baits, soft plastics, cranks, spinners, spoons, jerkbaits, floaters, sinkers, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.
Fast retrieve, slow retrieve, jerky retrieve, short pauses, long pauses.
I covered all the normally productive swims plus all the others.
They were not having anything.
>>
>>944469
The length of time it takes to go through all those lures and methods ensures that the lures and methods you should be using won't work simply because you are not using them at the correct time.
>>
>>944469
Wut are you trying to go for?

Best bet for me with bass is dawn or dusk. They will normally be looking for food. Sometimes they don't, so you gotta go find them. That's when you have to be patient and smart and break out the finesse stuff and cast around with slower retrieves.

When you rip them, they swim all sideways and then kinda flutter when they fall. Just like an injured fish that is freaking out.

Rat-L-Traps and lots of other lipless cranks don't have that same action. They have a decent swimming action but don't attract attention nearly as much as other ones that look injured.

I think there is a bit of a difference between what you get on the Gulf side and what you get on the Atlantic side. Lost of the same fish, but idk about those things. Redfish are one that seem to be caught much, much more on the Gulf side than over here on the Atlantic.
>>
>>944855

Speckled sea trout. Usually just called sea trout, speckled trout, or speck.

Despite the name, theyre actually not trout at all and closely related to the red drum/redfish.

They live in coastal salt and brackish water. You can find them in a lot of inland bays too. While some rare fresh water redfish populations exist , I don't know if the same holds true for speckled trout.

Chances are these folks are just out in intercoastal waters.
>>
>>944916
Yep, speckled trout arent the same as Sea run trout.

But im wondering what's the scoop with stocked trout, do they become sea run?
>>
I'm new to the adirondacks area, around what time of year should I expect ice-out enough to paddle around and fish a bit?
>>
>>944922

Rarely. Most stocked trout get caught/eaten because they get hammered and just don't have the survival skills of wild born trout.

And a good deal of stocked trout are stocked in places that can't really support a wild trout population, much less see them make it to the sea and back again.

In short, the kind of situation that would lead to you having to stock trout in the first place generally means it's not the kind of place go to looking for steelheads.

I had to take a knife and nurl the spool because it didn't have any of type of nurling like most of my spools have. No amount of tight knot work prevented it.

>>
>>944976
This is one of the reasons I use a leader that is less test weight than the main line. The leader snaps before the braided line does. Then again the line cost $28 for a 300 yard (274.32m) spool. That's $0.002+ per inch or $0.03+ per foot. Losing 10 feet costs $0.31+. While the mono leader....well the number of decimal places of 0s there are before a number is a good bit. Losing 10 feet of mono isn't a problem.

So yank on it and break it at the knot or leader. 20lb braid will bend hooks on most bass and panfish lures before it breaks anyway.

I still say line is the last thing you want to cheap out on. Plus good braid will last years if you take care of it instead of getting all weak and brittle after a couple months of use like mono.
>>
>>944989
Keep your line out of the sunlight when you store it. I'm sure heat from a closed vehicle trunk or car seat won't be good either. Mono can last years and years if taken care of properly. Put it in the sun when storing and it croaks out very quickly.
>>
>>944979
Usually I pull until it snaps, sometimes at the knot sometimes along the line.

Stocked sea runs. Do usually end up going out to sea and eventually even coming back sometimes

I work at a trout hatchery , not directly on the sea run program but I do raise them and talk with the BIOS who do the monitoring etc of what ones come back

Apparently a high enough percentage survive and come back to survive that they consider it enough of a success to keep the program going and keep monitoring it

If I get a good return, maybe I will grab a new combo. I'm thinking about a lighter spinning combo. Maybe I can find a decent price on a Size 1000 Shimano reel and one of those ~7' Okuma rods. Or a Penn combo. I still kinda want that Johnny Morris Titanium combo too.
>>
>>945107
Get a good st Croix or Loomis spinning rod and pair with a reel of your choice instead if you get a rod.

I don't understand the middle picture. The top is a real one. Bottom is a fly. The middle is what? Some photo shop effect?
>>
>>945113
Amazon Prime sucks for individual lures like that. The descriptions are always shitty so I'm never sure what I'm exactly getting. And they give you """free""" shipping but the lures cost $2-$3 more than any other retailer.

And idk about a Loomis. I'm down for a St. Croix if I drop some good money on a medium weight spinning combo but I want to set up a mid-range lighter combo. Not like full 2lb UL, but probably a 1000 size with 8lb-10lb braid and then those Okuma rods are around $50-$60 and I think it's the trout one or whatever I can find in 6'-7' that isn't real light but not as heavy as most mediums.

Idk tho, I gotta look around. I really like that cheap Okuma Stratus V 25 reel. It is such a great size where 10lb braid on it will cast 1/16oz fine but it can handle 1/2oz lures if I really want to. That is on the 6' Lightning Rod Shock M. I need to find more reels in that size because if I find something similar I might be willing to spend more on a good rod since I will actually use it a lot.

People from Philly are fucking terrible too. Boston people are obnoxious, Long Island cunts are obnoxious too with the god awful accent, but I might hate Philly the most because they all talk like they grew up in a trailer park and are loud and obnoxious as well. Basically white niggers.

And with championships, I still can't really believe the Cubs won. It hasn't sunk in yet because I never thought it would happen. Grew up with the Bulls dominating when I was really young and that was dope because nobody could touch Jordan. I have a bunch of friends who are/were pro BMX riders and even the dudes with signature frames and X-Games medals never really made a living off of it. They would get parts and clothes and a travel budget but their cash income was a few hundred a month. They all had second jobs if they didn't live with their parents. There are only a handful of dudes in the whole industry that actually survive off of it and those are the dudes that have sponsorship deals with products they sell at Walmart.

I guess fishing is a bigger industry but I doubt many of these dudes are getting much cash from fishing-related companies. Best way to make money would be if you had a bunch of Youtube videos with millions of views and wore Levi jeans and drank Rockstar in every video.

I had a moment to test out the lure action of all these and adjust them. I had to trim the bills on a few to stop them spinning. After that, everything worked fine. I was running low on leader line so I just stripped and retied the same knot on the same couple of inches of mono on the end, for each lure. It looks like a piece of crystal flashabou now.

I use clinch knots exclusively to tie on tackle. If the knot is pushed to one side or another it could cause problems. However, I've never really had them cause circling. It might drift to one side but next cast fixes it. When there is a problem with the lure it is normally something fouled or the lure isn't properly made.

Try using a "Non Slip Loop Knot" and see if that changes the action. If it does, it may be that you are using line that is too thick for the action of the lure.

Cool I'll look into it. Do you think the action might be a little too fast for treble hooks, or does that not matter as much since the trebles are a pretty good size on these swimbaits?

>>945744
What kind of lure, and are you using a spinning reel?
>>
>>945748
Didn't update before I posted. It's probably the way you rigged the hook. It has to be perfectly in line with the soft plastic. I know even if I get the hook really straight flukes will still roll over if I reel them in super fast. Could also be line twist if you're using a spinning reel.

When you pull on the line very hard and the tag end of the knot slips back through, undoing the entire knot. This happens when you use too few wraps/twists or you are tying the line to something that splays the knot's loop too far apart, like a big split ring. For split rings you may want to double loop the clinch knot and use an Improved Clinch Knot.

What I do when tying is to take the hook or lure and twist it between my fingers to get as many turns as the line will allow.

Check out how this clinch knot with 5-6 wraps slipped a considerable amount before the line broke. To combat that, you either use more wraps or use a lighter on the tag end to make it fat.

>Could also be line twist if you're using a spinning reel.

Never had that happen to my line in 40+ years of using a spinning reel.
>>
>>945759
It's never been a huge issue for me either, but I thought I'd throw it in there just in case.
>>
>>945761
It is more than likely just lure twist without using a swivel or a fouled swivel. It doesn't take very much twist over time to cause problems.

zoom fluke, ewg hook, 6lb test on spinning reel.

he probably reties more often so the line is in better condition anyway

Saw em at a BPS or Dick's a month ago, almost got them.
>>
>>945765
Yeah you just gotta be sure to rig it straight. Another option is to use weighted swimbait hooks. They help a lot with keeping it upright.
>>
>>945772
brings up another question

I used no weight this time and the fall of the swimbait was nice and slow. Is that a good thing or is it better to have it fall fast and vigorous? Thought would be good in the cold
>>
>>945596
I think Lunkers has said he has investments and businesses he does on the side... or that was Outlaw.
>>
>>945776
It depends on your presentation, but in cold cold waters, that works.
>>
>>945782
He's probably just a military welfare queen on disability or something.
>>
>>945776
As a general rule the slowest fall you can manage is better. A swimbait hook with a 1/8oz weight shouldn't make it fall that much faster, but it will make the bait run upright even if you don't rig it perfectly.

Sometimes fish do like a faster fall, but I think a slow one is a better presentation 90% of them time.

>>945782
I'm 80% Lunkers owns a part of some competitive gaming thing, plus he has the deal with Favorite Rods. Outlaw does have other investments/companies, but I don't know what they are.
>>
>>945679
sweet lures man.
>>
>>945756
To be completely honest I'm no too sure, didn't know that it would be an issue? Have used trebles before on my fast and extra fast rods and never had a problem, but usually try to replace the trebles with singles because of mortality rates are retardedly higher with trebles.
>>
>>945679
You should watch Paul Adams on youtube. He's this fat British guy who makes awesome lures by hand.
>>
>>945824
The theory is that since the hooks on the trebles are smaller than a single hook, the slower action will help keep the fish hooked and not give the fish as much leverage. It's also supposed to help the fish get hooked in the first place, where a fast action rod might pull the lure away before the fish has a change to close its mouth.

But I doubt it matters too much when you get to bigger trebles, and I'm probably worrying about nothing. I think I'd prefer single hooks anyway because fuck losing a $20 (or more) swimbait.

Anyone here fish in Virginia?

I'm a non-resident, wanting to fish saltwater only with rod and reel from shore/piers. Looks like I need a "Temporary 10-Day, Nonresident ($10)", but that seems really cheap to me.

What are some good, easy access spots on the Delmarva Peninsula, ocean side?

My sister was in town and bought a 3-day license for freshwater and salt from shore and it was $17.50 I believe. They don't always rape non-residents.

Also remember that if you fish piers where you have to pay (my local one is $2/day) that counts as your license there.
