Thinking about buying an Ugly Stik for anything besides soaking bait? Here's why you shouldn't:
>1) Berkley Lightning Rod is $39 everywhere
>2) Berkley Lightning Rod Shock is $49 most places
>3) Berkley Lightning Rod Shock is $39 at Walmart
>4) Shimano Sellus is $59 with great varieties and actions for bass fishing and a good reel seat
>5) Fenwick Eagle is $49-$59 and has what we call "Action" and "Sensitivity"
>6) No. 8 Blackout is $79 and will make you feel like a respectable angler
>7) Other rods are offered in a variety of actions and weights to better fit your needs
>8) An Ugly Stik will still break when you slam the tip in your car door
>9) Fiberglass is for Corvettes, not casting lures
>10) Ugly Stiks weigh a ton compared to similar size graphite composite rods which means terrible balance and can make your arm tired without the proper fapping routine to build strength

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just did a trout one.

You really dislike cork that much?

I mean I guess I prefer ABS or whatever synthetic shit but I never had a problem with cork. Pic related is that Mitchell that has to be almost 20yrs old and it's held up well enough. That thing took some abuse and only spot that really shows wear is the very bottom but most rods have plastic caps there anyway.

get some beads and hooks and weights.

depending on where you fish might have to smash down hook barbs. look up the regs for your area. you can bounce roe, float jigs, toss spinners for them as well.

I wouldn't eat any shrooms unless you have zero doubt what it is. I used to grow "magic" mushrooms back in college, those were some good shit.

When you oil woods you don't put a ton on it. It works into the wood and gets all soaked up. You wipe off any excess. The proper type and amount of oil won't give you problems.

No, that pic of fish on a bike is from google images. Stripers don't exist where I live.

Using a bike is great since you can have a many panniers on the front and back of it to carry gear. You don't even need to ride it, you can use just walk along side it, meaning you can really load it down with tons of stuff. They are good for packing in camping supplies like that too. Where I live, the places you can park are a long long ways from where you actually fish and you can end up 10-15 miles away. Having a bike to get back onto a road at the other end and pedal back to the vehicle is a lot better than walking (there's no off trail biking here due to terrain and rain forest).

>>913015
They don't come that small. Get a particularly long aberdeen and bend it yourself.
>>
>>913015
I guess you could always buy some long shanked regular hooks and just bend them into a worm hook shape.

On a side note, how are you supposed to jig for panfish? I was just swimming some sexee tail shad through the edges of Lilly pads that I know hold a lot of panfish because I heard them smacking the bottom of pads every ten seconds but didn't get a single bite. Do you bounce it on the bottom? Let it sit?

This is harder than catching a bass :(
>>
>>912446
I've been thinking about creating a fishing app for Android and iphone. It would allow others to mark bodys of water, say what kind of fish are in them based on a list of known species in your state (to avoid trolling) the ability to mark stuff would be a paid version. And to view would be free. It will also allow you to post pictures of your PB per each body of water and what lures work best in that body.

I'm having trouble thinking of ways to combat false information and trolls though. This app has been in my head for months now.. Just don't know if A its worth doing. Or B If I can really stop the spread of false information.

That right shoreline has that 6' black fence along it and then off to the left the shoreline is right by this industrial area and you need to work there to drive through the gate and get anywhere near the water.

But from where I was standing there is a decent stretch I could fish as long as I don't get kicked out.

It's private property all around the lake tho. I mean spots like that if you can access it legally and get a kayak on there it is probably straight since the entire lake isn't contained completely within somebody's single property.

I'm sure you can find even tiny ones online. Just google like #2 or #3 offset shank worm hooks.

I wouldn't attempt to bend them yourself since the hooks are probably bent first and then heat treated (or at least bent the proper way) and will end up really weak trying to make those tight bends yourself.
>>
>>913076
If you use a lighter to heat it up and undo the heat treating it should bend pretty good. Since they're just for panfish the strength shouldn't matter that much.

Guy asking about small offset hooks

I'd figure trout worms are a good option. Just have to pull the worms head into the eye of the hook.
>>
>>913113
I ordered 6 packs - 2 each unweighted, 1/32 oz, 1/16oz

Stoked to see these, I'll finally be able to rig gulp sand worms weedless. Won't stop the seaweed from snaring the sinker unfortunately but I think it'll be a game changer

What size is good for panfish, like bluegill?
>>
>>913118
Of that particular hook? Idk if 6 is small enough

My biggest successes with bluegill have always been on size 10 hooks. I like to go barbless too since they have tiny mouths and if you are using pieces of worm they like to take them deep now and again. Long shank Aberdeen hooks might be the best for panfish upon consideration.

Where I live they are not a common fish. Only the lakes have them, not ponds.

Are you gonna get those offset ones?

My favorite panfish hooks are the Carlisle hooks with the long shank. Easy to get out of small fish with small mouths. But I don't even know which size I use for bluegill since all my bait hooks like that are from assortment packs or just buying what looks good. Same with snaps and swivels.

Still need to build up a little more confidence before I can go 100% launch mode with it.

With a lil curly tail grub you can rig it like a texas-rig. With the head of the grub in the eye of the hook and the end of it having that point coming out.

With the one your suggesting looks like snag city and thats what im only worried about.

Worth noting that a pounder gilthead seabream spit the hook out 3 feet from shore...

I usually have 3 rods set up, 2 have a bit bigger circle hooks, and the third one, the most sensitive one, has a smaller, J hook for those smaller fish, ironically, the bream i lost hit the small hook, and was able to spit it out. If it was a circle hook, i wouldnt have lost it.

2 diferent ones. The skinny one was first and the fat one was on the next cast. That one was actually a nice fisb, especially for that little lake.

I hooked both of them pretty far out so I had to crank them in and the second one worried me because he was fighting hard and that lure has that double hook setup that does its job at not being a complete rake. But it landed em both fine.

What did you get the squid on? I mean I have seen those goody squid jigs but do you have to target them specifically or will they hit other baits and lures?

Got pic related today too ans it was a good length but he was skinny. Idk if it is the late fall and lack of rain but a lot of these bass were skinny. Hit 5 bass total and had one more med-sm guy on that jumped off. They are feisty tho with the water cooling off a bit.

I used to know a guy who did this for muskie
He was about 60
He would put one treble hook at the base of the tail, then one at the shoulders and cast it out, no weight or anything, he'd let the thing swim towards shore or logs freespooled and if they got too close reel them in a little, the fish would explode all the hell out of the water to crush the rat
It's insane

The chinks mostly stay in the cities and catch perch.

The wetbacks work allday and don't fish.

Mudslimes would know what to do.

That leaves us with.

Rednecks at worst leaving beer cans around.

Niggers leaving beer cans and bits of tackle around.

Mexicunts that leave beer cans around.

Crossed lines are rarely a problem and most are cool about walking around so they don't tangle. To many people have guns so nobody tries to steal shit. Most people are happy to lend a hand to land a massive fish. People give away extra bait when they leave sometimes. I have even been given some tackle like hooks wieghts and plastic baits.

We are generally friendly around here aslong as you don't get cross with us.

You will need to anneal them, bend them then heat treat them yourself. I was lucky with the first one and it is almost correct. The other two snapped; one like a dry twig.

You can anneal them with a cigarette lighter, but you may need to use a propane blow torch to temper them. Their coating will be ruined so you'll need to clean it off and apply a new one using epoxy, paint, or whatever.

I tried using streamer fly hooks.
>>
>>913335
I would rather just buy em. Especially because I prefer EWG offset hooks anyway. Have fun turning a Carlisle or Aberdeen hook into that.

Although sometimes I wish they made offset hooks with shorter shanks. Like for certain soft crawdad baits, the bodies will be kinda fat so you want like a 4/0 or 5/0 worm hook but the bodies are short too and you have to use a 3/0 or else the hook would be longer than the body.

Lew's?

I guess they were a big brand back in the day and disappeared and then somebody bought the name and revived them a few years back.

And tons of rods don't have the grip above the reel. It might be the majority. You don't hold it there anyway and then the split grip thing is a newer trend over the past 10yrs or so. I don't mind it. There is always a handle where you are supposed to hold it.

Bass rods like that (spinning and casting) are made to be balanced right near the reel so you hold it with one hand there and the other hand cranks

I've been tying flies for 30+ years and never used a fly tying vise. I've never bought any fly tying tools or materials advertised as "fly tying".

You can literally tie flies with stuff in your arm's reach in you house. If you have bare hooks and some thread of any kind you're golden.

Just remember, fish don't give a shit, but most fly tiers are the highest level of elite bullshitters you'll ever meet. People really into it are also into special UV epoxies, kevlar threads, and nearly illegal exotic feathers and materials. Just one pair of "good" fly tying scissors can cost $50 easy. You don't need any of that shit though. because fish literally don't give a shit.

So it's fucking freezing and not that comfortable fishing even if it isnt frozen in rivers. 40 degrees is fine but 20 + massive winds isnt.

If im aiming for ANY fish in the river, whats a good lure? How should I fish it?

lol..I'm guessing you never fished beads either?
Deez balls catch and thats all i'm concerned with. iirc the thought behind the dangle is that the hook hangs down acting like a keel so the ball doesnt roll and twist, allowing it suspend better in the current which would be a more natural presentation. thousands of guys have tied the same balls the same way for ages..so why bother changing them to make them logical to the human eye? after a while you come to realize fish dont care about a flys aesthetics, fishermen do. they hunt primarily on profile. deez particular balls arent really made for still fishing so the fish doesnt have a lot of time to scrutinize them like a autist before striking and supposedly they strike the balls out of self preservation to kill the other competitors salmon roe so that their own can survive..

thats why.

I couldn't weight those is I wanted to, the hooks are super tiny. For larger ones I use a hacksaw to cut a line down to the hole in the bead, slide it on a hook, and epoxy it. You can use any beads for that. Of course, you have to check local regulations because that is illegal in some places.

Went to the Lake today for a few hours expecting to catch a nice size Carp on my new rod and reel, caught this greasy motherfucker on the handline next to my rod instead. Oh well better than no fish.
>>
>>914024
you should probably gut it and bag it up within 2 hours of pulling them out of water
>>
>>914024
If you have a cooler to put them in, just bleed them out before putting them in there and deal with the rest when you get home.
>>
>>914024
I just throw them directly into the cooler live and wait til I get home to clean them.

It's a LOT easier to clean fish when they've been in a cooler all day because the flesh firms up a bunch. Make sure you've got a really sharp knife too, dull ones make it almost impossible to not ruin the meat.
>>
>>914023
Just happened to see it at Dick's. Not sure where to get them reliably.
>>
>>913973
Those laws are for trout/salmon areas and special waterways, for the most part. Also, the fucktarded method of having the bead 2 inches from the hook results in fish getting hooked outside the mouth thus resulting in a snagging. Snagging is illegal for most sport species, thus that style of rig in >>913936 is illegal in many places.

Some states allow a bead attractor, but you can't use a bare hook like in >>913936 If you use a fly in place of that hook or put the bead directly on the hook as in >>913947 it becomes legal.
>>
>>914021
>>914023
Just get a metal rod (brass or aluminum) at the hardware store and use a hacksaw to cut off as many of those as you want. Drill a couple of holes, add split rings and a hook. You can paint them or with the aluminum ones you can anodize them. Use a file or sandpaper to clean up the edges.
>>
>>914086
Damn, that's a good idea. It would take a lot of sanding and polishing to get it looking good tho because however you cut it there will be a lot of grooves.
>>
>>914093
Brass and aluminum are really soft metals and you can easily remove tool marks from them. With aluminum, don't use power tools to sand it. It tend to grab the sandpaper or grinding wheel and send the work piece flying or make the tool jump hard and or break something, including you.
>>
>>914095
I just know that it would be a bitch to make those cuts straight at that really sharp angle. If I were to do it, I would probably be sanding it forever just to get it thin enough and make the sides totally flat and parallel.

If it were a tiny one like that, I would probably use the Dremel with a tiny cutting wheel.

This took about 20mins to make. Keep in mind I have a bench vise to make cutting easier and a drill press with a V-groove jig for tubing/rods. The sand paper I used is 60 grit and 320 grit. Using 320 grit on the sides makes it shinier too, but should be done before you cut the blank off the rod to make that part easier.

>Dremel with a tiny cutting wheel.

No, you really should use a hacksaw and go slow. Also, wheels would need to be very large because of the wide angle. Small wheels will have you hitting the rod with the shaft and screwing things up.

I found an old bolt, but I'm tryin to get it thinner like a real Kastmaster. The angle you did doesn't look too hard to cut but the more of an angle and thinner you go, the more difficult it will be.
>>
>>914105
No, it isn't more difficult. that is the proper angle in >>914103 however I did not make it thin. I'm using a too small aluminum rod 1/4" and I'd like to be able to cast it. Thus, thicker, so it has enough weight to cast. You'd need a rod about 1/2" to 3/4" thick for proper size. For the one in >>914021 you'd need to use steel for that diameter of rod.

>bolt

That'd work fine. Bolts are soft steel and you can cold peen them and use a dremel easily. For >>914021 I'd just use a nail.

Catfish will hit inline spinners so I wouldn't be surprised if you ever do. Last year I got a bullhead on a mepps and a baby channel cat on a rooster tail.

Catfishing the normal way is too boring, though I've never tried to target huge cats. There are massive blues and flatheads in the rivers around here, I may have to try it out sometime. Or next time I'm camping on a lake, I might throw a line out while I'm sitting around and getting drunk anyway.

probably bought flies off their friends, who then learned "i could make a lot of money doing this" then started tying flies by the hundreds, putting them in boxes, and selling them for a pretty penny, thus the fly shop was born
>>913915
they were probably doing it wrong
big, flashy streamers for fresh stockies, man
and if that doesnt work, a yellow glowbug looks vaguely like the corn they were fed in the hatcheries
>>913934
this guy knows that he's on about. 9 times out of 10, the fish can see your line regardless (a trout can see 2lb flourocarbon, so if youre ever using more than 7 or 8x the fish can already see it) the only reason at all to use a light tippet is it lets the fly move more naturaly and get down faster. then i always get questions like "then how come when i use 4x with my streamers i catch more than when i use 2x"
thats easy, he's fishing 4x with more confidence because he believes the fish cant see it. i mean i caught an 11 inch creek chub with a #12 pheasant tail on 2x tippet. that line barely fit in to the hook eye, and was thick as the wire of the hook. thats how the nigs catch bluegil on #20 line. ever tie feathers to a piece of twine and wave it infront of the cat? it tries to kill the feathers. do you think thats because the cat doesnt see the string and honestly thinks those feathers are a bird? no, its because it recognises the feathers as something from a bird, and while the cat knows full well that its not a bird, its brain is hardwired to kill it any ways, so if you do the same thing with a fish, but those feathers are shaped like a fish, the same thing happens. the fish is hardwired to go kill it. look at pepsi, he's caught fish in gin clear water with #20 braid tied to his lure. thats a pretty clear black thread coming off that lure when its backlit against the sun. do you think the fish couldnt see that line?
>>913940
i probably would have tried to make them a litle more round but id fish them
>>
>>914170
I have a few frames of video from earlier this year of a snapping turtle swallowing a spinner I made. I'd caught channel cats on lures before, but it is ultra rare. I've been fishing nearly 40 years now and it has happened 1 time.
>>
>>914179
Fish seeing line or hook only matters to fish that have been caught and released a.few times. They generally distinguish the world between food and not food, danger and not danger. Anything that isn't a twig or pebble that isn't trying to kill them is food. They will even take food out of your hand.

i used to know a guy named lou who would catch them on fly rod. theyd never be very big, no more than 4 pounds, but he would just dead drift a fuckhuge wooly bugger in a slow stretch of river and pull a few for dinner. he was an ex flyfishing guide and he fixed my cast a lot. i can cast heavy shit on my fly rods that i never could before. turns out i wasnt waiting long enough after my back cast. heavy streamers are easy now thanks to him
>>
>>914181
well, unless youve got 1lb flourocarbon, they can probably see the line. its usually more a matter of patterns in that case. the stream i cought that brown trout in last week was fished super hard, super high pressure, and high pressure stockies quickly revert to eating only the smallest of nymphs. hence why as soon as i found a mayfly nymph, i tied on a #20 and within 30 minutes of doing that i pulled a 14.5 inch brown while everyone else went home with nothing because they wanted to throw wooly buggers and eggs, you know, the same shit that they see day in and day out. hell, i was even using a wooly bugger as an attractor pattern

I call it the Jig-Dog

Bass cant resist the jig

Cats cant resist the dog

>>
>>914212
I don't think so, but I would bet jerky has more of a smell than a raw hot dog honestly. Like a slim Jim or something.
>>
>>914215
Yes but since you're already going to dry the hotdog with jello and be adding stuff like garlic powder, the smell is probably better on it.

Cost is another thing too.

A packet of hotdogs is $1-2
>>

>>

I have gotten a lot of channel cats and tons of bullheads on nightcrawlers. Just rig a bell weight like 18" up the line and let it sit on the bottom. Bass and whatever panfish will grab em too so it's easy to set a rod out with a nightcrawler while you are casting lures for other fish and see what picks it up.

its illegal in some places and not in others. if a fish is foul hooked or caught in the outside of the mouth you have to release them is our law. flossing has its controversies but most fish are caught with the hook on the inside of the mouth, even if at this point in their life theyre not really eating. blame lawmakers not the fishermen. if stopped wardens check the hook marks and your gear for illegal fishing practices.

pic related. bead caught, inside the mouth.
>>
>>914289

>>

I went to the lake today and got skunked yet again. I've got no fucking clue how to catch a bass.

Out of my 10 trips or so to freshwater I've hooked one bass that was about 3-4 lbs and he threw my hook. Didn't even get him on purpose, I was just twitching a small rapala on the surface for bream.

I don't know what the fuck I'm doing wrong. I've tried texas rigged worms, lizards, crawdads, crankbaits, jigs. Today I was throwing a chart lizard, a dark purple finesse worm, and a white/red redfish magic on a jig which is what I used the most. Just went around cover throwing the jig at good looking spots and swimming it back to me which didn't produce so I tried bouncing it along the bottom which also got me nothing.

I've been fine with getting skunked up until the last couple of times, it seems like by now I should have atleast gotten lucky and pulled a couple small ones out or something. Goddamn frustrating.

This is going to sound really dumb, but are you sure that body of water has bass lol?

Right now bass probably won't be in shallow cover either, they'll want to be deep. Do you think it's possible you aren't feeling the bites? They can be really subtle in the cold water.

You should also try really slowing down your presentation.
>>
>>914416
There are absolutely bass, it's Newnans lake which is a pretty hot bass spot in gainesville apparently. I was mostly fishing under two feet of water but the average depth in this place is only about 3 feet. The water is really muddy so I can't see how deep the water is or any structure that is beneath it.

I did try some deeper water near the end of my day cause I figured the same thing so I just kind of drifted my yak over open water and tossed the jig some more.. felt weird since I've always just stayed close to the shore and cover unless I could visibly see the bottom and shelter like I can on saltwater.

The few other people there with bass boats were also in the center of the lake but I assume they had fish finders.
>>

Just had to make sure lol. I didn't realize you were in Florida. The bass should be eating pretty good and be up shallowish during the morning/evenings since it doesn't really get cold down there.

I would try to stick to black/blue colors and bigger lures. i would definitely use a rattling crank bait or a spinnerbait. Bass' strike zone is really small in muddy water so you'll have to make it easy for the fish to see/feel whatever lures you're throwing.
