Someone doesn't know how a potato works.
Someone tell official Soviet potato jokes now pls
So I'm planning to get /out/ this weekend, but I'm broke as fuck. Buying anything over $20 worth of food for the next two days is my limit, and I want a steak. So I'm going to spend $10 on a good steak, and the rest on some other snacks. HOWEVER, I do have some potatoes on my counter which are still good and I was thinking of bringing one or two out wrapped in foil to supplement my food supply.
No butter in the house, and I can't afford to buy some.
What's the best way to cook these bad boys up without the butta'.
I do have olive oil I can bring as a fat instead of butter.
>>887914
Boil and mash them with flour to make a dough, roll it out real thin and cook on a dry frying pan to make potato tortillas.
>>887917
I might make that potato dough beforehand before I head out and keep it in the freezer with foil and cook her up. I had ramen planned for lunch though and the idea of mixing carbs with carbs is brutal though. Guess I could save it for dinner with the steak since it'll be on ice.

Long life? When was the last time you got potatoes? Their storage life is like 4-5 weeks. Carrots and beets are better for you.

Ideally you'd be alternating between planting taters and radishes or some shit because crop rotation and soil nitrification and shit.
>>888115
why can't they adapt? I've never heard of a potatoe that won't produce seed, rot can be avoided with proper hygiene and anyone sensible grows multiple varieties of potatoe just to keep it interesting
I've literally grown seed from grocery store potatoes. It's pretty much a waste of time because it's not necessary, but it works.
What's the best starch in terms of weight/calories ratio? Rice, pasta, potato?
>>888144
Actual potato seeds numbnuts, not cloning-growing them.
Potato berries contain actual potato seeds.
>>888170
Rice
100g of long grain white rice (boiled) = 130cal
100g of white potato, baked = ~90cal
Best potato vegg mix?

you eat cured potatoes . Theyre toxic right out of the ground. Gotta let them ungreen in a dark place somewhere .
>>888262
So can tomatoes.
Not joking, tomato wine is a thing.
"The sweet potato is a remarkable plant. It’s a staple food of many traditional cultures. NASA has considered it a potential crop to be grown on spaceships for long term missions. In terms of energy production it’s only 3rd behind sugar cane and cassava. It produces the most food value (a combination of edible energy and nutrition) of any crop per unit space and time. A study of Fijian farms using manual labour showed that ratio of energy put into farming vs yield of energy was 1:17 for rice and 1:60 for sweet potato. It grows on marginal soil and doesn’t require much nitrogen to grow. It takes a relatively short growth period of 3-4 months to yield. All parts of the plant can be eaten including the leaves which provide additional protein and nutrients." - Primitive Technology

Really? When I was a kid we would be gather potatoes and just rinse or wipe one off and eat it right there. Same with corn.
>>888296
How does it taste?
>>888514
I don't know, I've never actually tried it. I want to, though.
There's only one company producing it commercially today, but apparently it was something some people in pre-war Europe did at home when they had an excess of tomatoes. The company making it today is Belgian and the owner got the idea from his grandfather.
I've found a few recipes for tomato liquor, too. But apparently it loses its flavor rather quickly and is mostly used as a cold soup base.

Oats are, by far and a way, the ultimate survival food. I make 350kcal bags with dried milk and cinnamon which weigh practically nothing and which just need a little water to ensure a great breakfast. Oats are god damn amazing.
>>888689
>5 hours
Nice hot bed of hardwood coals put out a lot of heat. 30 minutes max for the veggies, a good 10-15 for the steak.

Fun fact: potatoes contain deadly toxin known as solanine and they're closely related to nightshade, a highly poisonous plant. Also you're a faggot.

Didn't a lot of those people in Ireland die because of how great potatoes are?
>>888241
>Tomatoes are best vegi-waifu
Tomato are fruit
>>888960
Well a lot of people died because monoculture crops are really susceptible to disease and drought.
A similar thing happened with bananas in the early 20th century with bananas. Lots of people starved, some economies almost collapsed and we got a funny song out of it.
And while a plant disease did stunt Ireland's potato crop, the famine was greatly exacerbated by shitty political decisions based on flawed Malthusian population theory.
Another interesting New World crop fuckery that happened was the mass outbreaks of pallegra that occurred when corn was brought to Europe by the Spanish. The Europeans didn't bother to nixtamalize the corn (soak or boil it in an alkili bath) before consuming so they were unable to absorb all the nutritional value and people began to suffer from niacin (b3) deficiency. Google the symptoms of pallegra sometime, it's pretty grizzly.
>>887914
You are going to fuck up your shitty potatoes and your steak dude. I guarantee it.
>>887914
Put wrapped taters into the coals, bake it for a while then eat.
>>888976
>A similar thing happened with bananas in the early 20th century with bananas.
but has it happened with bananas though?
>>888888
>>889207
With bananas it's actually kind of happening again with bananas. With bananas farmers are fighting to keep the Cavendish bananas from being wiped out by panama fungus with bananas like the Gros Michel was in the early 20th century with bananas.
With bananas.
>>888700
IIRC they really are a type of nightshade. For mild entertainment, tell your dinner guests that you will be serving nightshade tubers this evening. Mention that nightshade can have psychoactive effects and dye the potatoes purple.

probably what you're thinking of is the thing with hybrid plants, but that just means the second generation isn't as good. seed still works.

Long term storages? Potatoes go bad in like two weeks on my countertop in FL. They are filling and delicious though.
>>895629
Don't keep them on your countertop, put them in a paper bag and store them in a cabinet or pantry.
Also don't store potatoes and onions together, they make each other sprout faster.
>>887873
if that picture is you and you didn't go extinct, that is pretty amazing
>>887873
>cute
>>895629
Jeez, we keep them in the dark in the garage from autumn until spring. They start sprouting at the end of winter but it's still not too bad by that point
>>887873
i tried to grow winter squashes last summer and i fucking failed, wanted to grow maybe 30 and only got 3 and i am not even sure what i did wrong. i think being in zone 3b is borderline to grow em, maybe i should have started them indoors and put a wee plastic tent over the mounds to make a kind of semi-green house.
i think i will try again but... i think i will put more of my chips on betting i can successfully grow a lot of potatoes. i think i heard sweet potatoes don't keep as long as regular ones tho, bummer

Tovarish Stalin went to a communal farm to inspect the yearly potato harvest.
"Tovarish Farmer, how is the harvest this year?" he asked.
"Well Tovarish Stalin, we have so many potato we could build tower to God!", replied the farmer.
"But Tovarish Farmer, God doesn't exist! He is capitalist lie to keep the Proletariat in check!" said Stalin.
"Well Tovarish Stalin, neither does potato." the farmer then said.
