>Some people do flyfish in saltwater but it isn't super popular.

Can confirm. Only ever seen evidence of fly fishing (lures broken off in mangroves from false casting) but never anyone actually doing it. I fly fish in salt a little here and there but I'm largely unsuccessful.
>>
>>864365
I've encountered exactly 3 flyfishermen and two of them couldn't cast
One had more leader than fly line and was just giving a gentle flick to catch dink bluegills to throw in his pond to feed his bass
He didn't even use a fly, just a small hook and maggot
The other was using his fly rod as a pole, not even casting just dropping a fly in the water
At least he had a fly
>>
>>864373
>stop doing things not my ideal way reeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Sometimes i slay bluegill on those stupid pipecleaner jigs. And sometimes all I catch is grass in the exact same spot. Just because he didn't catch dick doesn't mean he don't know what the fuck hes doing...

I saw a guy once swimming outside my hotel in the keys near a bouy. And he was just swimming around. 30 minutes later he swims back with this massive fish. And he caught it with a hook, baitfish, and about 10 feet of line.. Never have I seen anything like it. But he produced.

11/10 meme
My dank-o-meter went around 3 times
>>864442
There is a skill to catching trout
You can't spook them and your fly has to be in the right spot looking like the right food
Dink bluegill you can catch on a piece of paper after throwing rocks the size of softballs in the water
I'd rather spend 100 bucks on dink trout than 100 bucks on Pepsi's dink bass. A fish on a fly rod feels 10x bigger than a fish on conventional gear too, throw a foam spider or something at big gills on a 4 weight, you'll have more fun than with worms on an ultralight combo
Plus its been scientifically proven that fly fishing is therapeutic for stress relief in the same way that tai chi and yoga are
>>
>>864459
>Alabama rigs
Is that what they're calling them now?

I actually saw some Booyah ones on clearance at Dick's and almost grabbed one but I hate dealing with that big, overcomplicated stuff. Looks fine if you are trolling and in hardcore mode but I don't even really like Dropshots so fuck messing with all that.

Also remember that you aren't going to want to cast the thing on your regular medium bass rod. I have this other goofy Booyah wire spinner thing and once you stick a bait on there you def need a MH and it is probably still around 1oz. Those Umbrella rigs are going to end up at like 4oz depending what you put on them.
>>

But if you want to play the meme game, anything other than canepoles, handlines, and traps with natural bait is a meme
The first reference to lures is fly fishing, so your "conventional" gear is just a bastardisation of the original fishing meme

>>
>>864509
>Even less skill than catching bluegill

Not true at all. Being proficient with a cast net is not something you just pick up and can be good at. Exploring new areas and finding new species of fish is much more fun than flipping your rod back in forth for a 1 pound river trout
>>
>>864509

What, and tossing a line out while getting drunk takes skill? There is no skill in fishing, period, it's all patience and luck.

Why am I not surprised?
>>
>>864515
>implying trout are all that are fished for
If it is predatory it can be caught on fly, even some that are not predatory can be had that way
I am 100% certain that if you give me someone who has never even touched a cast net I could have them catching fish reliably on their own in under an hour
But teaching someone to fly fish?
First you need hours in a wide open are just to teach them to cast, then you have to get them turning flies over, reading water, matching the forage, detecting strikes
Cast nets can be learned in a day and mastered in a week
Fly fishing takes years to learn just the local area, once you start going abroad there is no mastering it
>>
>>864521
You've never flyfished
It takes absolute focus to flyfish, you have to focus on getting a tight coil, delecately placing the fly exactly where you want it, mending your line for a consistent and natural drift, reading water to find fishy areas, detecting a subtle bite, and matching what the fish are eating
>>
>>864526
your only making the argument that its a meme even worse. Almost all the fish that can be caught on a fly can be done on a simple spinning reel and rod combo. I said trout because they require a meme presentation just to get caught in rivers.

>>
>>864536
Never said it wasn't a meme. Just by your standards a much simplier way to catch the exact same fish that you could with a fly
>>
>>864535
I don't think you understand the science behind its theraputic effects
Its the complicity that makes it therapeutic
When you're putting absolute focus on a perfect cast into the perfect spot for a perfect drift the rest of the world melts away
You forget about everything
You forget the stresses of day to day life
Ask any flyfisherman and they will tell you that there is something spiritual about fly fishing, and even mainebub admits that a trout on fly is a borderline religious experience
It is a form of meditation for many

I went to Crissy Field and fished from the shore on Sunday. Got skunked, it was way too warm (32C), and I was standing there like an idiot in jeans and a long sleeve. Saw some nice booties though, so worth. And no wind knots at all, and no lost lures either.

I started near the yacht club going for striped bass. I tangled into an older guy. He cast right across me, I was casting dead straight. I offered to cut my line because it was kind of a mess, and he didn't even thank me. He said stripers have been slow these days. Also he was using a swimbait, something I still need to get.

Then I got to Crissy and a dad fishing with his son told me there's surfperch in the area so I was hoping for that. I was using a 3/4 oz. Kastmaster and a 1.5oz Mickey Jig.

Use your mouth method. Careful not to knock ur teeth on the weights.

>>
>>864665
I've tried every method. Mouth works the best for me but I can't throw it far and don't really like putting things that have been in the same bucket as rotting fish in my mouth.

What we really need is an upscaled rocket fishing rod that is boat mounted and fires 12 ft nets

Hmmm maybe you just got a shitty net? Or is it with all nets?

Have you actually thrown a REAL net? Something that cost more then say 80 bucks for a ten footer? Not saying you need to be posh with a full nylon 12 foot cast net (should be around 300 bucks for that size)

I mean if you want a compact rod and reel, there's always telescoping or 4pc+ rods that will break down to 12"-18". Otherwise there is a ton of DIY stuff like pic related. I used to always see the Mexicans at my pond as a kid using an empty beer can with line wrapped around it.

Stuff like this is far better for trolling. Normally you use a "gang troll" which is essentially the same thing, as they both mimic a school/shoal of baitfish either when reeling in or jigging.

As someone who has been around for untold decades and has seen the wonders of the internet arise from nothing, I'm extremely surprised there isn't a big fishing wiki website. Like with all the lures, gear, knots, and techniques described.

Everything I google is for wikipedia or fishing skills in various video games. I think there's really a niche here going unfilled.

A skilled fly fisherman can fish circles around most spinning reel fisherman. anyone can put a worm on a hook and catch something. fucking 2 year olds are capable of landing fish on a spinning reel. it's a very boring passive form of fishing. i prefer fly fishing because it is active... i'm always doing something and it requires focus and precision to do it correctly. it's just not for little stocker trout either. catching and landing a small mouth bass on a flyrod is infinitely more enjoyable than on a memecaster with 30 lb.+ brad. you actually have to work the fish and be patient rather than just horse it in as quickly as possible. you can also catch larger freshwater species like stripers, pike, and musky. or saltwater gamefish like bonefish and tarpon. it just takes a lot more work developing the correct techniques, casts, presentations, etc.
>>

You gotta go play with the rods and figure it out. My cheaper memecaster is on an Ugly Stik. It is a 6'6" M with fast action but it feels closer to a MH Ugly Stik spinning rod. A handful of rods are like that where the M casting rods feel heavier and faster than the same rod model in M for a spinning reel.

Over off 10th St and 95. It's right down the street so I like to stop by there for a quick 30min session. No sneks in there as far as I can tell but I know the spots to hit at sunset so I can normally catch something. Some days I will get a few decent 2lb-3lb fish from that little place.

>>865000
Checked.

And you could easily rub a low profile memecaster with 30lb braid on a M or MH rod and run 1/4oz+ lures for bass and still be able to run heavier catfish stuff.

Skid tried to bass fish with his Ambadsadeur with 30lb braid and he said it wasn't much good unless running 1/2oz+ lures the whole time.

To be fair, even with big bass, sometimes you have to throw a 1/8oz shakey head rig with a finesse worm if they are being picky. I get that a lot with the peacocks where they won't touch a 6" lizard with a 1/2oz bullet weight but I could rig up a 4"-5" lizard with a 3/16oz weight and they will grab it.

Same will happen with texas rigs on a muddy or weedy bottom, you can't run real heavy weights.

What do you all suggest for fishing in a small stream, like creek size up to your knees at most, and with lil fishies that I can only identify as sunnies, suckers, and some other species which might be bass (figuring out what that one is my motivation)

I actually tried to use a net and just leave it laying down in the water with me dangling like a crane right over it waiting for curious fish to get in the right spot.

Gee its the most interesting thing, just watching fish investigate what this creature is in wading in the water with this black and shiny net

The longer you stay still the closer they get, but damn the second you make a movement they're out of site. Their so quick.

I don't want to cast net or trap, I want some elegance in it, so maybe an ultra light rod with the smallest hooks I got.

Also don't want to hurt the lil guys so I might de-barb the hooks.

At this point I'm considering line and hook only, maybe a stick even, basically no rod. I'm in love with these lil fellas.
Pic unrelated
>>
>>865178
I fish creeks like this using a bamboo pole I built, but a normal ultralight rod or cane pole will do the trick. Try using some really small jig heads and plastics. Also, a technique I have had a lot of success with is to carve a small float out of styrofoam using a razor, cut a slit in the side of the float, and push the line down into the slit. With a small enough float, you don't need to tie it on at all, so you can switch from float to bottom rig instantly. Here's a video where I'm doing some fishing similar to what you describe.

Get some waxworms on a tiny hook. Or those tiny Gulp! grubs or minnows on like a 1/32 jighead. Pic related are great for little stuff too. You could even do some small flies.
>>
>>865178
Yeah in my experience, the best way to fish creeks like that is with ultralight gear, being sneaky, salmon egg hooks with pinched barbs, worms, and fishing from down stream. If you can get the bait to flow towards you with your retrieve, you're more likely to hook up because the bait is being presented naturally.

Take a size 22-30 midge hook and either an ice fishing bobber or a pinch on foam strike indicator and either 7x or 8x tippit and a tiny spliyshot (3bb or so) (all of those should be available in a fly shop or I can get you amazon links)
Tie a foot of tippit to the end of your line on an ultra light rod and use a davyknot or similar to tie on your midge hook
Pinch on the strike indicator so the bait is just barely off the bottom and the splitshot at the 1/3 mark between the hook and the float (favoring the hook end) then bait a single maggot like pic related
>>
>>865198
>>865178
Or if you got a pole (bamboo or telescopic) just tie a section of tippit 2/3-3/4 the length of the pole and you can flick and drop baits right where you want them

I can't really speak for cabela's products, only this reddington I have. I believe it's a 5 weight.
Currently I'm too poor to go about and get a new rod/reel. The rod I have works out great for me, but the reel, which is aluminum cast, is kind of shit. It performs quite well, but theres a gap between the frame and the spool where my line always seems to slip through. It's kind of annoying. Supposedly the reel is good quality, so maybe when it was casted it was just done poorly.
As far as the Okuma reel goes, I'd say you're probably better off going with a cheapest option, seeing as you don't sound like you fly fish much. A metal reel will last you longer, but I don't think a Cabela reel will be that much better than a low low-mid tier plastic reel.

As for the steelhead, I'd say I feel quite the opposite, haha. I only have small sized trout around where I live (northern utah) and wish to catch a sizeable salmon one day. Once I get a steady job and am out of school, I'll be able to travel to Idaho for some better fishing for sure

For DIY lightweight split shot. Save all your busted splitshot. And when you have enough melt them down into molten lead. Find a flat surface to dump the lead and pour let it spread out. Should make a puddle of thin lead. Now smash it to like a 1mm thick. Now use tin snips and cut strips of lead... Take a long straight steel of some sort with a sorta sharp edge. I use half of old scissors. And lay it across your lead strips you cut. And smack lightly the top of your metal piece. To make a tiny groove no deeper then 0.25mm then take a pair of pliers and squeeze the lead sheet into half with the groove on the inside. Until the sheet is almost closed but a big of enough gap to fit your line into easily.

Bam! Endless amount of lead weights...

And if you're really anal about exact weight. On a rainy day you can cut and weigh them to sizes you like.

Also, they really do replace live bait. I've caught a shit ton of trout with a gulp shrimp under a popping cork/just letting it freeline out with the current and pinfish/bream will eat little pieces of gulp baits if you cut them up.
>>
When you buy a reel does it come with instructions or is it just something anglers are expected to know?
>>
>>865444
they usually come with instructions for things like drag placement, line recommended line weights, etc. Knowing how to actually use it is probably expected of the angler because I don't recall ever seeing instructions on how to cast or anything like that.

My babbys fist bait caster is a bass pro shop tourney special that I currently have strapped to an old MH shimano rod. I've pulled in some nice fish using that reel with 20lb braid. I use it in the surf but I find myself breaking it down to clean the salt out every time afterwards. Reel is about $60.

Caught this lady friend on said reel. Used a stronger rod than it's on now though.

Pic one. Can't go wrong with any of the major companies that people have mentioned, but those Bass Pro combos are getting really nice. Everybody who uses them seems to love them, from the cheaper stuff up to the more expensive ones. Take a look at some of the Bass Pro Johnny Morris setups. You will definitely get more for your money than buying a Shimano.

And as far as sales, after Christmas clearance is the only time they ever put big stuff like that on sale to make room for a new model for the new year. I reccommend checking them out in-store first and then you can look on eBay and see if a reputable seller has a good deal on it. That's what I did for my Revo, it was $160 in all of the stores but I found it online for $115 with free shipping.

>>865441
I mean panfish will take the little shit all day, but those big Gulp nightcrawlers anon was talking about probably won't pull too many bass just hanging off a bobber. They need some movement.
>>
>>865467
Bass Pro is the worst place for sales on larger stuff because they know they will eventually sell the shit. They will occaisionally have deals on the store brand stuff though. Got my Johnny Morris rod for $80 off of $120. I prefer to shop at Dick's for that stuff. They have much better regular sales (although rarely on more expensive Shimano and Abu stuff) but you can still find those on clearance sometimes. And people don't go to Dick's for $150 rods and $200 reels, so when they mark stuff on clearance down 40%, it will be there for more than a day unlike Bass Pro.

Kek.

If you aren't a Shimano fanboi, there are a lot of other great options and you honestly don't get a ton for your money with Shimano most of the time. Not that a $150 Shimano will be shitty, but spend the same on a Bass Pro reel and you will probably get a few more bells and whistles.

>>865589
I was just on that LineOnFishing.com and idk if it is run by a baitshop or what but that fucker had so much info on just setting up freshwater rigs for Walleye or whatever. Definitely not all-encompassing, but a lot of really good stuff, especially for people living in the northern US and Canada.

I have stolen a bunch of pics from there for the imgur. Just added a couple more.
>>
>>865589
And therein lies the problem. Those communities are expansive for a reason. So many variables, so many opinions, so much geography to cover. If it were possible to have a wiki with entries like "For Largemouth Bass in clear water June-August, USDA Zone 5a, air temp 70-94 F, overcast conditions <5MPH wind, water depth 3-12 ft use chartreuse pepper flake yum zingers on a #3 EWG, wacky rigged with 1/4 oz bell sinker, reel 3 times, jerk twice, wait 2 seconds after line goes slack, one long tug, repeat" I'd already have the URL and be charging $20/month to users.

Now I know that's a bit specific but that's what an encyclopedia is, specific. Basic info like Brad's imgur and pastebin is available all over the place. Getting too specific and covering a large geographic location would be folly. He moved from Illinois to Florida and can vouch for that first hand.

Even fishing for the same species of fish in similar little lakes is so much different 1000mi away. I used to love the natural colors up there but a lot of days the bright colors kill it here even in similar water conditions. That's why so much of the stuff is just generalized and the correct answer is often "ask your local tackle shop". There's tons of good jnfo to get you going but people are always going to dispute it and the only real way is to get some line in the water and figure out what works in that water.

I like it. The reel so far been great. It's pretty smooth and the 7.5:1 gear ratio is killer. It cast lighter lures just as good as the heavier ones. The rod isn't the best, but it's far from the worst. It loads up nice and you can feel most of what's going on. For under $200 it's not a bad deal at all. Every thing feels really solid on it.

>>

Winter is the 100% best time to catch fish here. It's when they're all moving and feeling frisky enough to go for topwater and other fun stuff that they usually won't hit while the water is warm.

For bass atleast.
>>
>>865837

>>
>>865841

All pepsi fishes for is dink bass, panfish and sneks you fucking retard.
>>
>>865841
I definitely prefer the gulf side. If you want a REALLY nice place to catch some spotted seatrout and redfish check out a place called Rocky Creek. They just built a nice boatramp there in the last couple of months and it's all backwater saw grass creeks & a short ride out to really nice grass flats.

It's a little south of Steinhatchee so you could stay at the sea hag marina hotel and ride down or just put in there. If you go to rocky creek bring gulp shrimp, gulp smelt, or some of those redfish magic plastics with the white body and red tail and just jig them around cover/through deep holes. Winter is the best time for redfish here and is also when the gator trout decide to move in and hide in 8+ feet of water.

I put some circles for some of my favorite spots. I usually stop at the first one on the way out, it's marked with a white channel marker and is an oyster bar with a 15-20 ft hole right infront of it. This post is getting kind of long but yeah, rocky creek is great. 10/10 recommendation

They're in the Indian river lagoon which is connected to the Atlantic. So I've never caught trout in the ocean directly but I'd imagine that's how they get in the IRL. So I started fishing again, saltwater.

I'm using my dad's rods and I wanted a couple of cheap ones. The guy at the store suggested me a 140€ rod that's "good for beginners".

My dad just said, get a cheap rod and a decent reel. I think I'm gonna trust him.
>>
>>866099

Yeah, if you're fishing to fish and relax any old rod will do. Just gotta know what the fish you're trying to catch bite.

Generally people who work at bait stores/rod stores are slimy dicks who will act like your friend, and seem like they're helping you out.

In reality they're just redneck hicks trying to get that sweet, sweet commission.
>>
>>866102
The guy owns the store, so he's even a bigger jew, I already smelled it.

I'm probably buying two 30 bucks rods and get done since I don't have much time to go fishing.
>>
>>866106
If you're just fishing bait, go for it. Cheaper rods won't make nearly as much of a difference as long as you aren't abusing them.

Keep in mind that you could probably find combos for $100 (or €) and they will come with a $70 reel and $50 rod so you can save a few bucks if you aren't picky and want a reel too.
>>
>>866115
There's pretty much no big game fishing in saltwater where I live, if you catch something over 1 kg you can call it a day.

Last time I was on a rocky zone like, 200 m from the beach so I don't really need long throws.

Hell I used a 25-30 years old rod+reel and I did just fine.

Got my eye on cheap fiber glass rods, 3 pieces so I expect them to at least be durable, they got 2 years warranty as well.
>>
>>866116
3pc rods? Why?

Do you have a big outdoors retailer like Bass Pro or Cabela's over there? They are good for that cheaper shit. Bass Pro's Graphite Series rods are bretty gud for $40, and they have even cheaper ones for like $10-$20. I bought one of the $20 rods for a light reel I've had laying around and I can't complain with what I paid for it. Similar rods from a major manufacturer would probably cost like 20%+ more.
>>
>>866118
From my past experience, more durable and easy to repair.

They're the most used ones here.

No big outdoors retailers for fishing related stuff where I live (Spain). Some small stores here and there and huge sports mall with a couple of cheap rods and some low-mid tier reels.

This is the one I'm probably getting.

Also considered a telescopic? (not sure if that's the correct term in english), mostly for convenience since I have a small car.
