Thanks for the tackle advice, but where am I aiming to drop my bait, standing pools or where the current is swift? And I heard getting close to them will spook them, but I dont wanna cast into trees so I got to stay in the water, im guessing just cast farther (and always upstream?)

>>
>>866307
No go to the fly shop and buy beadhead nymphs
Pheasant tails or hares ears from size 10-16
Rig that under a float bubble so they bounce bottom
Cast at trees and rocks and watch for foam
There are some simple sayings "wood is good, foam is home, rocks rock" etc
Trout are just as likely to be in front of a rock as behind it and will usually be infront of of a tree
Foam indicates the high flow spots where they'll stack up for food
The fronts and tails of pools will hold fish too
As will undercut banks
Trout like water about 2-3 mph so focus in areas about walking speed
Dress to match the surroundings and stay low in clearings or you'll "skyline" (have a clear outline that can spook fish)
Power bait only really works on stocked trout and even then most people I talk to don't like it
If you can, flip over rocks and look for little bugs and stuff under the water and choose the fly that is most similar in size

What is that a little golden trout or a Brook trout?
And the combo?
>>

Pretty sure it's a little golden trout. Caught it up in an alpine lake in the Uinta mountain range
Also, I'm the same anon from last thread with the reddington path 5 weight combo
>>
Even with the water cooling down quite a bit up here in the northeast I still can't catch shit on moving baits. It occurs to me that the bodies of water I like to tend to fish are probably what many would consider pressured, so I guess at least I feel good that I haven't been skunked at all this year. It just sucks having cranks, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jerkbatis etc and feeling like they are useless.
>>
>>866422
yup golden, the bars arent as pronounced yet on that one. My wife and I hiked to a few uinta lakes going cross country. I caught a tiger trout in one of lakes. I had never heard of a tiger trout and thought I was getting trolled by a local but yeah tiger trout. It made my 146th species caught.

80% of those are jerkbaits.. they dont have to dive that deep in the lakes I fish since they are so clear. the smallies will see it from the bottom in 50+ feet of water and come up and grab it no problem
>>
Are these artificial baits and jigs really that good? I've just been using live bait and jigs all my life, and I've been doing alright. Am I missing out?
>>
>>866772
Na, Live bait is just easier. I get bored of using the same bait every time and like to challenge myself. If you like the way you are fishing now dont change it

never caught, but have seen quite a few albino brookies this year , also some not quite albino brookies, but extremely light lacking any bars and spots, Plus its also interesting to see different strains of trout ( browns in particular) and how different their coloration can be from courtlands to other strains,
>>
>>866826
So is the grass underwater or it comes all the way to the surface? If it comes to the surface, frogs are the way to go. If it is underwater, you could run poppers and other topwater with hooks hanging off. And if it is just grass and not super thick, you might be able to get spinnerbaits through.

Whenever I fish weed beds like that though I always get bigger bass just on the other side of the grass and weeds. I have one spot that is similar with thick weeds and little gaps between and I can always get snakl bass with frogs right over the top of the weeds. Later in the afternoon and at dusk, I will Texas rig a soft bait, put some weight on it, and huck it out past the weeds. If the larger bass are hungry, they will be lurking out on the deeper side waiting for something to slip out of the cover. So I will work them nice and slow right before the weede, then just reel it in quickly over them and cast again so I don't grt all caught up.

>>866843
Its probably 3-4 inches under water most parts. Some are a little deeper. Pretty much half of the lake is grass patches like this. I did try punching it but I was just pulling out wads of grass every time. I also tried a weightless senko for a bit but it felt like I was just wasting my time so I walked around to some other spots.

Maybe grab some Zoom Horny Toads. Or even the lizards. Rig them weightless or with a real light weight and pull them across the top. I do the Horny Toads with a 4/0 EWG weedless and no weight, cast pretty well on 10lb braid. Otherwise you could even do the lizard with a 1/8oz weight or something light so it won't bury itself down in the grass and run it underwater just on top of the grass. A dark color like Junebug will really get their attention if you run the lizard in the grass because those black and purple colors stand out really well against the green and brown.

Otherwise traditional spinnerbaits. Maybe a Booyah Pond Magic since they are light and you can probably keep it just on top of the grass and spinnerbaits really don't catch up much. How far out does the grass go? Can you cast past it? That's what I would do and just work the bait from the deep water right up to the edge of the grass and then reel it in quick.

A couple more options would be paddle tail or split tail soft shads. Those Storm shads have the one hook on the top and come through weeds well, but they are heavy and might dig in. Otherwise get some Zoom Super Flukes and rig em with a weighted swimbait hook so they will be weedless. Once again with those, a nice dark color would probably stand out well in the grass.

>>866867
There's a Strike King Swimmin Shad with the weighted swimbait hook. Those could definitely cruise through the grass if you don't want to do topwater.

But I still think you should try and fish past the grass. Bigger bass normally don't hang out in tall, thick grass like that.

It's always in the imgur too, but really doesn't show trebles.

It's not a big deal if you don't use the same size. But like with anything else, too large of a hook and smaller fish can't grab it but too small and it is easier for larger fish to shake it loose.

Just remember, even though 20lb braid and 6lb mono are the same diameter, the mono will probably cast better since it is so smooth. But the 10lb braid will cast better than 6lb mono since it is so much lighter.

There's two different types of body style for those bluegill and sunfish. Pumpkinseeds and regular bluegill have the big round body with a small mouth while green sunfish have the longer body and big mouth.

Those breeds are all over. You will get a lot of cool ones fishing little ponds in the midwest.

Nah that are a little different I think. Green sunfish have a dark green with cool blue colors. Used to get them in IL but all I see for bluegill in FL so far has been the really plain ones. The fish I got in IL never had that distinct of verticle stripes on then.
>>
>>867186
Not if you're fishing for sunfish. All you need is a shiny hook to jig with. You get crappie sometimes too.
>>
>>867172
Hmm, I never noticed a difference. Like I said in IL we had all sorts of bream and they all lived together for the most part but that was urban lakes. The less pressured spots with big bass, I seemed to get a lot of fat sunfish with smaller mouths.

Never got redears around there though. I think those are found more west, like west of the Mississippi. Or at least everytime somebody posts a redear, it's coming from Kansas or Nebraska.

What you said about the large mouth and pike/muskie reminds me of perch in Wisconsin. You don't catch yellow perch everywhere, but it seems like the places you do get them are known northern pike and muskie spots.
>>

It works for channel cats, but if you are going for cats with commercial baits, get "dip bait" or "punch bait". It is softer and more sticky and works so much better.
>>
>>867183
>>867197
It is better to catch a bucket of bait fish, kill them about 12 hours before you go fishing, cut some up for chumming the water, and use some for cut bait for channel catfishing. You can use a net bag for holding the chum in the water.
>>
>>867200
I used to get channel cats on nightcrawlers quite a bit too. And bullhead love nightcrawlers.
>>
>>867201
You can catch them on anything, I'm just stating the best method. If it isn't working it is because there are no channel cats in that area and you need to move to a new location.

Nah I'm sure chumming the area with baitfish will def do better than a regular nightcrawler. I guess I'm saying the doughbait isn't anything special. Dip bait is pretty good, but a dead shiner or half a bluegill might be some of the best for channel cats and a nightcrawler won't fail you either.

Anybody ever try the dough bait for carp? I bought a jar of it a long time ago and it was kinda sweet with a strong anise smell. Didn't do shit for me, white bread balls on a treble was always the best.

The difference between nightcrawlers and chumming with dead baitfish is the difference between catching 4-5 channel catfish and catching 20-30 channel catfish. At least that's been my experience.

Normally dough balls for carp are used in areas where people use old bread to feed carp for fun. It can still work though.

I'm still thinking about it. Fishing kayaks do run like $800+ for anything worthwhile. I think it would be nice for some of the lakes and canals where I can't fish from shore on the whole shoreline because of trees, weeds, or private property.

Only thing is lots of the places I fish are already private property so I can get away with casting from shore for an hour on a Sunday morning but putting a boat in the water might be testing my luck.

Also check out your state laws. One of the reasons a kayak sounds appealing is because there is no registration or anything else that makes owning a boat such a bitch. But Ohio makes you register kayaks and I'm sure there are other states. At that point just buy an aluminum boat with small motor.

Compared to shore fishing? No, you'd have to be stupid to think shore fishing is superior to having pretty much any kind of watercraft. Unless all you fish is small creeks or tiny ponds, I guess.

>>
>>867287
Trout respond better to bait than flies IMO.
Worms are good, sweet corn is also great.
What is absolutely insanely effective is a little piece (maybe 1 inch square) of oily fish like mackerel.
>>
>>867234
You can get them way cheaper than that. This will be about the 10th time I've shilled this yak here but the tamarack angler is ~300 and is absolutely fantastic.

If you're over 200 lbs or more than 6 ft tall you might want a longer one, though.

Never tried it, but I suppose you can catch em with anything that wiggles or gives off a slight shine. How I understand it, is that summer is worm season and in a couple of weeks when the water gets a little colder you can start bringing out your flies and lures (talking about trout).

Y'all niggas gotta grab a container of waxworms. They are really plump and juicy and I think that gets the fish going like crazy. They are one of those fatty treats for lizards.

>>867329
You can bass fish with a bobber and nightcrawler, and you could catch catfish on that same setup if you run the bait a little deeper. All depends on the populations of fish in a given lake and if they are feeding.

Fishing with lures normally requires a bit more technique than just throwing bait out. But in my experience, it is easy to find bass if you know where too look, but they can be picky and won't always bite everything. If you can get a bait near catfish, they will probably eat it. But it is harder to find catfish on the bottom of the lake than looking for a weed bed and fishing for bass on the edge of it.

apples and oranges

I wont deny that the price difference is unreasonable but when you actually compare what I saw with the pic you posted it becomes clear why they cost more. The ones you posted are just painted crude lead on a hook. The ones I saw were molded into little fish heads and had more detail to them, not to mention some use tungsten which is always more. I was thinking of running a big zoom super fluke or gambler big ez.. think it would be too much on something like pic related (1/2 ounce)?

They really aren't that cheaply built or anything that would necessitate anywhere near the price difference. Pic related shows the ones with the hammered gold willow blade which is a cool touch. The $6 ones aren't nearly as nice as the one you just posted, they look more similar to the first one but all white and no special "sexy shad" paintjob.

You could run the Super Flukes or Gambler shads. As long as the hook is coming out enough and hopefully towards the middle of the body, you will be straight. Only thing is those baits have the slots cut into them to be weedless rigged so they may not stay on the underspin quite as well. You can find lots of 3"-4" soft bait minnows that will work better on jigheads with the hook coming out of the top, especially in the saltwater section.

I highly recconmend any 3"+ curly tail grubs or those Gulp curly tail minnows and mullets. Saltwater section normally has a few different colors of the Gulp ones from like 3"-5". When I run out of this pack of chartruese ones, I might buy the big jar of them.

Thing is, I fish in a river with running water. Not sure if you go to a pond or something, but stocked trout act very differently to flies than a natural fish. Bait tends to be good, but I don't see the fun in it.
Anyway, when I started to fly fish, I used to get nothing at all. You really have to pay attention to the way the trout are feeding and if at all possible, look into what they might be feeding on. That's the hard part. But I looked online at multiple sources of what's hatching in my area and when they hatch and I go and find a fly or a dozen in its nymph and larval stage. Trout diet is made up largely of what we can't see, not what's flying around. Even if you see trout come to the surface, more than 90% of the time, they're feeding on an emerging nymph or something.
With all that said, I now catch on average 3-5 trout when I go out. On a good day, up to 20, on a bad day, I get bites, but no hooks set. My problem is, the trout I do catch aren't very sizeable. I've heard at night, that's when the big trout come out and troll the shores.

>>867298
And I have a 5 weight. Like I said earlier, I don't go to a pond, or if I do, it's right where a river drains into it. I normalls troll running waters. Bait and boat is good in still water areas/ponds/lakes.
>>
>>867519
This
I just carry pheasant tails and hares ears size 10-20 then turn over rocks and pick the closest one to what I find stuck to the bottom of it unless something specific is hatching
I need to pick up some stoneflies and green sno-cones
But I diont have trout
It seems to work well enough on suckers though so the theory seems sound
>>
>>867492

I rarely use more than 1/8 in that depth or deeper. It's a finesse technique, not a carolina rig.

>>867497

I hate these stupid quick attach weights. If I try to tie a proper knot it will break off when pulled tight and when I use it as intended a feisty 3 pound smallie will send the weight flying.

Swinging wooly buggers like for steelhead?
Atrocious custom flies that would make a traditionalist have a stroke?
They're stocked "catchable" so they were 12-14 inches introduced
I bet it will be fun on my 4 weight
Craws maybe? Or streamers?

Left lane is for passing, give those retards a ticket if they can't pass in a reasonable speed.

But on the other hand, dude that wrote the article is a pussy. If he hates trucks so much, he should go live in the woods and eat wild berries because you need trucks for tge country to run. And you can't expect trucks to always ride in the right lane until you teach people how to merge correctly.
>>
>>867800
Did some googling and the rainbow are stocked catchable in spring, 6-9 inch Brown's will be stocked soon
So if I wait till late October I should be able to get them on swung wooly buggers but now the old stock will probably want small nymphs on a light tippit

I'm having a blast catching dink bass on an ultra lite rod with an unweighted wacky rigged red worm
>>
>>867834
Yes.

You are making an in-line spinner. You need short pieces of wire to make the body with. The tail uses "hackle" from a rooster's neck feathers and is easy to find online or any place that keeps chickens with a rooster or two. You can use your own wire sourced from whatever place or buy it online from lure making websites. Stainless steel wire is the best and won't rust. You can use needly-nose pliers to bend it or buy a "Du‑Bro Kwik Twist Tool" which is made for that specific purpose. Google youtube videos on how to use that tool. For the wire, google "stainless steel wire lure making." They come in straight, hooked-looped, eyed versions or buy it in bulk rolls from specialty places.
>>
>>867834
>>867842
Oh and the body can be beads, there are 100s of types and styles online or make your own. Be inventive.
>>
>>867834
This was a website somebody posted with high quality stuff to make your own inlines

http://www.pen-tac.com/blades.html

But the stuff is really easy to find. And if you want to make dresser hooks, all you need is that little fly fishing bobbin or whatever and some material. Only problem is most places sell the shit in bulk unless you want to end up paying like $7 per lure. One day maybe I will order the stuff because I want to make color combinations that are difficult to find. Mostly with painted blades.

>>
>>867863
Nail polish isn't cheap. You can get cheap paints by the gallon and save a shitload of money vs using nail polish.

That being said, I use nail polish from time to time simply because I happen to have it for whatever reason. When DIYing on the spot, literally anything can work, but if you want to buy stuff then buy the correct stuff so it will last much longer and come in colors and sparkles you want.

I've never liked those rigs. Carolina rigs have always seemed to do better for me and whenever I see those I automatically think "tourist", "newbie", or both.

Those hooks are good for pretty much anything but are definitely on the small side if bigger fish are around. 3 or 4/0 is what I usually use.

That sucks. Leatherman will probably fix it for you.

If I wake up early on weekends, I like going south. Maybe next weekend we could hit up Weston or Miramar and try to get some peacocks. Otherwise those Pompano lakes are fun for like 6pm on a weekday because they are so close. Well slightly further now since I moved east of Federal but still not bad.
>>
>>867939

Though I also heard that the bigger seasoned trout get real finnicky and only like tiny nymphs on lightbtippit because they get super tackle shy once they're caught a few times

pretty much, the longer theyve been in the river the smarter they get, after the first 6 months ( assuming the river is well fished) all the dumb trout will be caught and probably eaten, they learn the lures most people use ( hence why i use jerkbaits) just because no one else uses them i think im going to go out tomorrow after work for some browns the big salmon here are the same way, the larger they get the smaller baits they go for,

And for morning fishin, I'm a big fan of like sunrise to 9-10am. After that it gets warm and slows down.

We should hit Weston next Sunday morning maybe. It's not a bad drive at all, especially if you are off Sample a little bit west already. Get on the Sawgrass, cruise for 15min until you are right there at 595 and 75, and there are a bunch of lakes.

I tried this today. While you can make eyes using this method it seems to be reserved to when you need a special color or pattern you can't find online or in stores. Otherwise, it really isn't worth the time and effort to do. Of course, you want to mix slowly, to prevent bubbles, and use an ultra clear epoxy, unlike what I did...

Regardless, I'll just be ordering eyes when I need them.

They're both Berkley. Gulp gets torn up faster but it gives off more scent. They have slightly different designs too. For most Texas rigged stuff, I'll go PowerBait or Zoom or whatever. I really like some of the smaller Gulp baits for jigging and beetle spins. Best advantage to Gulp is that fish will hang on to the bait or strike multiple times which they won't do with hardbaits or not to the same extent as other soft baits.

Overall, depends what you are fishing for but doesn't make a huge difference for bass fishing since they hunt with sight and movement over scent.

Seriously though if you want to try the stuff out for bass, look in the saltwater section of Dick's or wherever you shop for fishing stuff. Grab a bag of the chartruese curly tail mullets. They normally have them in 3", 4", and 5" I think so get whatever size looks right for your lakes. Run them with a jighead, swimbait hook, Texas-rigged, or use them as a trailer on a swimming jig, chatterbait, spinnerbait, etc. You can't go wrong with those things.

Just remember they are kinda disposable after you use them. If you leave them out, they will dry out and shrink up since they are almost like a sponge so they hold the scent.

I like to use a size 20 hook with a single maggot
My set up used to be a size 4 split shot 8 inches over a size 20 hook that I attatched with a Snell knot then for a float I used a pinch-on strike indicator that I split it half (turned one pinch-on into two) and dangled that from a 13 foot telescopic Walmart pole with either 2lb test or 8x tippit material
>>
>>868283
Stay at janns netcraft and buy a cheap fly vise (no bells or whistles), some fur died to the colour you Want, matching thread, a bobbin, and some threads to match the fur, or black can usually go with anything well enough
You'll also need some good scissors, a whip finish tool, hair stacker, and head cement
It will all total up seemingly high (50+ dollars) but its worth it if you use (read lose) a lot of inline spinners and jigs
Then if you take up fly fishing you're half way to tying your own flies
To make the wire bodies you'll need a pair of wire nips and some round nose needle nose to bend a circular eye and cut wire

I'd also reccomend playing with other materials- tinsel, fabric, Hyde on, Hyde off, marabou, random fabrics, maybe even play with tying on the body weights to add bulk but not weight
If a pattern doesn't work salvage what you can and try a new version
Even make some with ewg hooks and attatch a soft plastic or those hooks with the wire on them for weedless in lines
Your imagination is the limit

Also don't try to throw it launch it out there super hard until you get the hang of it. Just do regular normal casts.
>>
>>868309
this.

start slow. dont get frustrated if you dont master it within the first few times you use it. if you really wanted the best way to learn would to put on some heavy braid and tie on a sinker and cast in your yard. also make sure your breaks are set for each lure you put on. good rule of thumb for beginners is when you hold the pole horizontal and press the free spool release the lure should drop at half the speed it would fall under its own weight with gravity.
>>
>>868304
Start by casting 1/2-1 ounce weights
Start by fan casting
If you're used to spinning reels cast 15 feet to the right of the intended target (assuming your right handed and your swinging the rod on your right side)
Buy cheap mono (zebco brand is like 3 bucks for 700 yards) to learn on because you'll lose a lot to backlashes
Make sure your reel is properly adjusted
Do casual casts to start
Focus on accuracy instead of distance
