depends what you wanna do and how much you want to spend.
I used to dirt jump for years and BMX, broke my wrist so I gave up. BMX but now I am bored and want to get back in to mountain biking.

not really sure what you want but I live in Vancouver and want to start hitting the north shore and also want to do long trail riding, so I'm looking for a possibly all mountaim style bike.

No they don't, they just think they do. They mostly get their information from bike magazines (which just hype unnecessary shit for their advertisers) and each other, not actual experience. /out/ has (or at least had until recently) a few people who know quite a bit about trail bikes and touring.

Not OP but if we're looking for a decent hardtail(which is what I'm looking for)then pull some examples from your local craigslist to show quality or maybe list off manufacturers that put out solid used hardtails. Maybe what you would pay for one? Personally I've asked this myself, completed some research online and I'm still lost.

get a low-to-mid level Trek or Gary Fisher ($300ish US). you won't regret it. i've owned a few and they're super nice and last forever.
