A mentally stable man would look at this picture and be interested in the girl. Meanwhile Skid is undressing the horse in his mind. Also notice the professional shooping skills by yours truly. That's why I'm a professional angler, not an artist.

Underspins a GOAT, chatterbaits a MEME, Mepps a MEMEGOAT.

Who's prepping for fly fishing this fall? Just made these over the weekend.making some hare's ears next.

I need to work fast, spent too much time tying a full box of nymphs and leech patterns for my uncle.

Also just bought a new 8'6" 5 wt. 4 piece so I can put it in a backpack.

Planning to do a few overnight stays in NH, VT, western Mass and maybe upstate NY where my uncle lives.
>>
>>855833
He didn't give any advice aside from telling him to ask locals for advice.

Can you read, or are you the autistic horse furry whos been saltwater fishing twice?

Is having a shitload of ball bearings a meme on surfcasting reels? What's the recommended number?

Hell I think my old as fuck reel has just one and it feels good.
>>
>>855915
I think k most have 4 minimum
I like 5 if possible
>>
>>855915
Is it a spinning reel? Because the number or type of bearings in a spinning reel won't affect casting at all, just the retrieve.

Anyway when you're getting into saltwater stuff, you are probably better off looking at the type of bearings rather than number. There are all sorts of shielded and sealed bearings that will keep the water out better. And then there are ceramic bearings when you start spending some money.
>>
>>855932
I just started fishing again, always did saltwater, but I never got into technical stuff, mostly because I was a kid, and for me there were three kinds of reels, shitty ones, decent ones and the ones that felt great.
>>
>>855855
I picked it up over the summer but I'm waiting for DH to open up in November so I can target trout. Is fall more dry fly or nymph focused? I got pretty good on cricket patterns and clouster minnows
>>
>>855936
There is a price point with reels where once you start going higher and higher, you are paying for exotic materials or a "Made In" stamp. You don't have to spend a lot on a spinning reel to get something that will work well and last for years, especially for freshwater. There are a lot of good $30-$50 spinning reels. You might want to spend a little more if you will be dunking it in saltwater a lot though and hooking fish that will run out the drag for 20min.

But basically you can spend $100 on a reel or $200 on a spinning reel from the same company, and there's a good chance they will both be just as smooth and have the same internals but the $200 reel will have some carbon composite frame and carbon fiber whatever that will weight a couple ounces less. If you are going to be casting all day, the lighter one will be nice but it's hard to justify spending twice the money.
>>
How do I catch anything other than bass and bluegills in rivers?
>>
>>855915
I started surf casting on a Penn longbeach no. 60
Its not as important to have the best swiss watch of a fishing reel as it is to have a sturdy reliable reel that is pretty smooth
>>
>>855952
Buy a fly rod and swing nymphs through holes if you have trout or put a bluegill cut in half on the bottom for catfish
>>
>>855944
>"Made In" stamp

Never been a fan of that on anything. I always want performance related to price.

>>855955
I'm eyeing the Daiwa Opus 6000 because it looks like tank. I want something durable.
>>
>>855962
>Daiwa Opus 6000
for the price point that looks like a good reel.
I didn't look too deeply at specs because $50ish is a fews seasons exendable backup for me and all reels in that price point will be about the same.

Try holding it 1st if you haven't. Weght is one thing that can make a decent reel crappy. I love my spinfisher 6500 but it's just too damned heavy for everyday on a 7' rod. Dropped to a 4500 and I'm in love with life again. Moved the 6500 to a 10 ft rod and the balance is much better.
>>
>>855971
I think I'll be fine if I go with that one, my current reel weights around 800 gr, the Daiwa is lighter.
>>
>>855962
I've got the 5k it's a nice reel

I posted this before, got three of them, quite heavy.

My father is probably going to start fishing again so I'll just have one, but the brake is pretty fucked up, the guide line too, I'm just considering getting a new couple.

I stocked up when Dick's had a buy one get one half off awhile back since it's not like I'm not going to use it eventually. Gotta jump on the good deals when you see it.

>tfw almost time to break out the topwater again
I was looking for a good black something topwater when I was at Dick's last weekend but those Yamamoto ones I had my eye on are gone. Only dark one was a cheaper Strike King Banshee popper. I think I need to stop by Bass Pro and see what they have over there for the night time. And I want to get a couple casts with the two silver/clear ones on the left of the pic. The one on top is a Yo-Zuri 3DB and I got that at the beginning of summer and the action is incredible but I haven't had much of a chance to use it sucessfully.

Anyone float fish for Salmon/steelhead?
>>
>>856204
I used to but flyfishing is what I do now
>>
>>856081
It depends on the type of catfish. Flatheads favor live bait, so I usually take some worms and black perch. You can use anything though as long as it's alive: bluegill, baby carp, goldfish, bullhead, dink size crappie. It's important to take at least two different types of bait to increase your chances of success. Be sure to check your local regulations regarding bait.

Blue and channel catfish eat anything that they can smell. This includes live bait, but you can always do very well with cut bait such as carp, shad, bluegill, etc. Stink bait can be productive at times. So can liver: chicken, turkey, beef, and beaver (my favorite). Don't overlook insects, both larval and adult. Grubs, grasshoppers, hellgrimites, and catalpa worms have all been used to take home channels. Again, the larger variety of bait equals higher success because you can more quickly determine what the catfish are in the mood for at the time.

Hook type is all about preference. Regular J-hooks require you to set the hook. Kahle hooks pretty much set themselves, but it doesn't hurt to set the hook if you like. Circle hooks cannot have any manual hookset. This results in a lost fish. Simply let the fish run and the hook sets itself. This poses problems if a fish takes the bait and swims toward the angler, creating slack in the line.

Ultimately, what you use is determined by the conditions you are fishing in. As you gain experience and build up a fair repertoire of tackle, you'll be able to know what will work best.
>>
>>856210
Where do you get beaver from? Do people just trap em for fur and give away the meat or something?

I normally get my stanky beaver from the bar but never gone fishing with it, I kick her out in the morning.

most trash goes to the land fill. birds go to the landfills. fishing line kills wildlife

mono will eventually rot. braid takes a lot longer. when you respool line at a shop the line gets chopped before it goes into the trashcan (well its supposed to) some places that sell berkeley products have a machine that does the cutting for them.

Yeah. They might be similar in diameter but braid creates more friction sliding out and it's more lightweight meaning that it stays in the air longer. It should still be decent to cast if you get quality braid and have a good rod.

>>
>>856733
Maybe. Compare the diameter of each. Supposedly braid absorbs more water than mono, thus becoming heavier as it gets wet. I can't attest to this though. I could never get used to braid because I grew up on mono.

Why are you wanting to fish braided line? What will you be fishing for?
>>
>>856745
Not that fag but I switched from using 12lb mono on everything to braid (powerpro) only. My cast distance went up maybe 20%. The sensitivity gains alone are normally worth it,
>>
>>856739
Thinking 15 is prob sufficient but I would feel more confident with 20 than 15 especially if I get ran into lillypads

>>856745
Because I'm fishing in a very weeded pond and have already brought in multiple weed covered bigguns that I really had to be patient and exercise a lot of finesse bringing in so the line didn't snap
And if I got a true kraken on and it was able to run me into the lillypads it would definitely break me off
>>
>>856747
I fish alot of trashy areas for catfish. Its easier for me to break off my rig and re-tie with the mono than try to roll over whatever i happen to be snagged on. Lately I've been thinking about switching to braid for crappie fishing, but I picked up 1400 or so yards of mono that was on sale last spring.

>lose casting distance
YES.

for ul fishing I like to use nanofil or power pro micro braid (4-8 pound test) they will allow you to gain casting distance with 1/16th and 1/8 jigs.
>>
>>856747
Do the colors of the braided line fade or bleed out? I would like to try some in hi vis.
>>
>>856758
not on high quality ones like windtamer, suffix, or powerpro. spiderwire bled for me and I've seen some chinashit get nasty fast.
>>
>>856751
If you're in thick pads you'll want at least 30
I'd say go for 15 its worth it for casting gains
Even 15 you'll get your lure back more often than not unless you're flipping into trees, thick pads, and docks constantly
And even then you should be okay
>>
>>856759

>>856760
I'm mostly throwing into weed beds and I've been avoiding the lillypads cause I know with 6 lb mono that's just asking to be broken off

I suppose the real difference is just how much heavier is 20 lb braid than 6 lb mono (assuming friction to be insignificant)

I know I could probably make up for any lost distance if I went with a moderate action medium light power rod but I don't own one currently and don't want to have to drop the dosh on a new rod right now
>>
>>856763
I guess maybe I'll pick some up. I really like to see the line when dead sticking crappie that are biting light. Is it a huge increase in sensitivity compared to mono?

Ordered this today, with a neon green tube. I figured if I'm not gonna catch anything, I might as well have fun casting.

This is on salt, they say it can catch lingcod, striped bass.
>>
>>856766
With 15 you're nearly tripling your breaking strength while improving casting distance. You should be good with either but I'd go for 15
>>
>>856767
Definitely
Put on a flouro leader and rock it
>>
>>856769
20 lb would be more than tripling my breaking strength and would really open up a lot more possibilities (frogging for one)

I'll ask the guy at the tackle shop next time I go since it appears too close to call based on the responses

>>
>>856733
You would be better off running 10lb or 15lb braid instead. While 20lb braid is about the same diameter as 6lb mono, mono is smoother than braid and casts a little further with the same diameter. If you run 10lb braid, you will have double the strength and be able to cast better.
>>
Why does high/low pressure make a difference with fish feeding?
>>
>>856736
Siwash hook would probably be less work and you can buy open eye to be able to switch out hooks easily. One problem with baitholder for lure is that the eye is too small for a split ring and you can't out it on a welded ring so you have to work around that
>>
>>856861
Opps i didn't see the weed guard. Maybe you can try to put a weed guard onto a siwash or try to find one with a weed guard. I imagine that might still be easier to mess with the eye so it can fit onto a lure.

It has more to do with UV than washing off. So, if you keep your spools covered with something that stops all light, the color will last FAR longer than without. Some aluminum foil works perfect for that.
>>
>>856975
That's for storage and the majority of the line on the spool. Check your last 20 yards of braid after you've had a lure on for a long time and you'll see how badly faded it gets
>>
>>856986
I keep the line completely covered until I'm ready to cast at the water and I cover it as soon as I'm done. I don't have fading issues. Although, my braided line is most used for night fishing catfish. So, it is far less affected by UV when in actual use. lol

Should I be looking for a fiberglass or aluminum boat? I'm thinking of getting a center console for speed to travel the rivers, but I've always loved pontoon boats for catfishing because of all the space.

I live in San Diego but just started getting into fishing, so I just fish the local lakes. Can't wait to go to a pier or out on a boat
>>

They're all paid models or just out on a boat with their boyfriends

Plenty of girls say they're into fishing but that just means they went a couple times while vacationing as part of an activity with friends and/or family

I have never met a girl who fishes on a near daily basis like most of the regulars in this general

As someone who's never fished before, would this be a good idea to purchase to get into the sport?

Don't waste money on new gear. Find used tackle at garage sales and flea markets.
>>

That doesn't look like a bad deal, plus you could always lowball dude and walkaway for like $120. Those Shakespeare rods are cheap, not sure about the Abu. But dude is only asking $150 AUD.

But if you're brand new, make sure that is what you actually want and will use it. If you end up fishing freshwater rivers, 3 surf combos will be useless.

hit shelter island or crystal pier. theres lots of mackerel and a few bonito getting caught.

Question or Skid or any other salt fly angler.
I have a chance to get a used St Croix 8/9 wt rod for cheap.
Never fly fished
Any ideas for a salt reel that wont break the bank. I did a little looking and Okuma SLV came up which is like 50ish but not really a salt reel. Should I care? Do I really need to spend #2-300 and then another 80 for line?

If your query is under 40 pounds, its not rough water, and your anchor in good I'd trust a 12 foot aluminum boat with a small outboard
>>
>>857597
Any reel is a salt reel if you take care of it
Rinse it in fresh clean water after every trip, and every 3-4 months open it up and do a quick detailing, then once a year open it up for a deep clean
>>
>>857597
And Cabela's prestige plus line has worked well for me, once you're good enough to appreciate expensive line then go for name-brand top dollar
>>
>>857597
>>857689
But trust me you'll suddenly realise how expensi e fly fishing is when you hook something toothy (bluefish, mackerel, bonnethead, etc) and learn that fly that costs 5 bucks each is a consumable and not a permanent purchase

I obviously believe, right or wrong, that Skid has positive info or I wouldn't have asked. I see him as someone that goes "all in" and learns what is good, bad, or indifferent and I'm OK with trusting in that. You don't have to.

>>857690
thx, I kinda figured any reel would be OK if I take care of it (which I'm not the greatest at because, well, ... lazy) but I haven't trashed my spinning reels yet and every one gets at least one yearly deep cleaning/greasing.

Off to catch that blue I dropped the other day. That bi@tch is gonna be mine
>>
>>857415
I went on the san diego out of seaforth, best boat in the fleet imo.

>>857436

piers are absolute shit, save money, buy yourself a 20# or 30# outfit or rent from the landing and go and learn on half days.

Or learn how to fish the surf or on the rocks in the bay.

And don't forget to get your ocean stamp on your license
>>
>>857727
Well if you rinse it after the trips and do a yearly detail it should work well enough
Just watch your drag components those are important in salt
>>
>>857727
Oh and bring the rod to a fly shop and get a professional opinion on line weight if you can
I prefer an exact weight because I know what its made for and can go up or down a weight depending on situation (let's say I'm fishing an 8 weight rod in a small Creek, I'd probably use 9 weight double taper line to cast heavy flies better in tighter spaces, of if I'm in wide open bays and need to cover water I might use a 7wf line to cast farther and cover more water

I'm new and lost shitload of line (maybe 30 yards or more) being retarded. Maybe I should respool the line instead
>>
My Acme Kastmaster's hook started getting rusty after only 2 times out on the salt. I washed the lure with tap water when I went home, so I don't know why.

What should I replace the hook with? I heard replacing the treble with a single hook and adding some bucktail is great. What should I buy anon?
>>
>>857597
I would grab it while you can. As far as reels go check ebay. theres china made reels that have decent drags, made out of milled aluminum (not plastic) and are dirt cheap.
>>
>>857902
vmc 9626 in the appropriate size.
>>
>>857902
Bugger bucktail pit a soft plastic (curly tail or fluke) on it
>>
has anyone here fished for brook trout in lakes?

there's a lake near my new place stocked with brookies by the fisheries ministry, all my shit is for bass. guy at a tackle shop told me to try lighter mono line opposed to the heavier braid i have on to punch through all the vegetation im used to and to use really small mepps spinners.

been trying to find decent bass spots here but seems impossible without a boat (most of the lakes are accessed by boating through rivers, but the brook stocked one has two shorefishing spots)
>>
>>857902
Steel wool will knock the rust off.. And you can melt down some wax and give the hooks a quick dip. Hit em with a heatgun after dipping to get off any excess. Wont stop the fish from biting but will slow any rust.

I usually surf at south mission and I see guys fishing off the jetty there every time. I was thinking that could be my first shot since I could do other shit too.
>>
>>857572
That's the pier I had in mind haha but I'll give the jetty a shot first unless friends want to go
>>
>>858017
I've never fished the beaches north of the southern edge of silverstrand, mostly stay in between IB pier and silverstrand.

Gotta tell you though, seen that jetty many times going in and out on the sportboats and it seems very fishy given the right conditions, I heard a guy caught a 30lb yellow off it last year
>>
>>858020
mission jetty is fun no doubt. there sand bass, halibut, macs, perch ect.. used to fish it all the time when i lived in pb. In the bay across from the bait tanks is usually pretty good too.
>>
Now that I have the day off so I can deal with this moving bullshit, I just want to go fishin all day.
>>
Had what I can only assume is he biggest fish I've ever hooked on line for about 10 seconds last night. Hit my xrap and took off pulling drag and shaking its head. Tossed the hook dammitsomuch. What an adrenaline rush though.
I'm guessing stripper the way the lure was getting bumped beore the hit.
>>
>>858219
That's like when I had what I assume was a huge snek a couple months back. Except I was fighting for closer to 2min until he wrapped me up. By far the biggest thing I have ever hooked, or at least the strongest. My heart was racing for the next 15min. I have never had anything run out 30yds of line in a couple seconds right after I set the hook.
>>
>>858220
Pepsi, go hook into a jack small in the salt with 20 pound braid

My trip keeps breaking
>>
>>858220
Yeah, it's a great feeling.
I think I might keep my drag too low as a rule and it may be costing me hook sets. I keep it so when I jerk a lure it peels just the smallest amount of drag from water resistance.

Also picked up that St Croix fly rod. 8/9 wt. 9'
great condition, great price. If I don't use it I can flip it easily for what I paid. Now just need a reel, and backing, and line, and time to play with it Gonna wait for the winter and learn to toss line then.
>>
>>858268
That fish just looks pissed off. You can tell it would put up a good fight.
>>
>>858272
I keep my drag fairly low too (considering it is 15lb braid) just so I can have a little fun. But it's also kinda set so a feisty ~3lb bass is about where they can start pulling. With that giant snek, I might have been able to keep him from getting the line tied up on whatever if I tightened it up right away but no way he still wouldn't pull line out if I had the drag tight just to the breaking point of the line.
>>
>>858275
They do
Look up videos of jack fishing and see how they go

>>858272
Go on amazon and get the slv then go on the Cabela's website and get #30 backing and some prestige plus wf-f saltwater
Also you can buy pre made leaders and tippits but I'd look into tying your own
You'll tie a lot of knots in them while you're learning and is cheaper to make your own and toss it once you've buggered it

And if you can only know three new knots, know the nail knot, the improved bloodknot, and the perfection loop
