#82-"Eww Gross!" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>852565

Sittin at home enoying the weekend, thinking about how chatterbaits continue to be a meme. I wonder where I should go and not get bites on the chatterbaits today. On the upside, the water should start cooling off bit by bit in the next couple months. The largemouth I got last night was bretty gud as far as these small lake shore fish go. I need to find where those knoife fish are at.

Pastebin and Imgur. Thinkin about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Went down the canal for a few hours today.
Tried dead baiting for pike for the first time, got fuck all, not one bite, so I switched to a little lure to try and get some perch or some smaller pike, got about half a dozen follows from perch and only one bite, that I missed.
I am the worst fisherman.

I'll have to do a fishing exchange with Pepsi. I meet him down south and do the freshwater thing one day and then take him surf fishing the next day.

Kys

You know what really is a meme though? Fuckin Yamamoto senkos. These are the least durable soft plastics I've ever used. I caught one decent sized bass in the pond and work and it's damn near about to fall apart. You would think for $7 a pack they'd be a bit more durable.

That fucker fought really hard too. I thought it was a much bigger fish.

Pic is another alright one I caught today. The rest were dinks
>>
>>854610
I still don't understand why Yamamotos are worth 3x as much as Yum baits. If it were a really good creature bait, I would pay the money for it. I really like the KVD Swim'n Shads and I'm willing to pay $6 for those but no $8+ Yamamoto stick baits.

You ever use the Culprit baits? Their plastic is a bit harder than most and they will split around the hook sometimes but they have a couple color combos, designs, and sizes I really like plus I think they are only $4-$5 a pack so I'll go for it.

Some american states actually have laws against using that garbage. As said before though, only real use for heavy tungsten is punching. There is no need for anything that heavy/dense on a regular texas or carolina rig.

Hnng chartruese. If you look around you could definitely find some Zoom chartruese. The closest thing they have to the Senko worms would be their Fluke Stiks (which I haven't seen in chartruese) or those catepillars. I had been looking for finesse worms in that color for a long time and finally found them.

Also these Culprit worms are pretty dank. 10", really fat, and the bottom half is like a chartruese pearl while the top is like chartruese pepper.

The weather is starting to cool down with recent rain and wind out of the north. This morning I left my panfish gear at home and went after catfish instead. Caught these four channels in about 2.5 hours on worms in a feeder creek that was steadily rising. It's a shame I had to leave for work.

Awhile back before Skid outed himself as a furry, I ordered him a spool of Power Pro and I was tempted to find a good deal on eBay after realizing his reel would need a 300yd spool and it was like $40 from Cabela's after shipping, but I didn't want to end up sending him fake, damaged, or old line to save money. What does /out/ recommend for tackle/b8?

Also, how easy is it to cook for someone with no prior experience preparing fish?
>>

Use trout worms on 1/32 jig heads below a slip float, in lines, or crawfish pattern crank baits. My local streams are artificial only so idk about live bait options.

Cooking a fish is piss easy, just cut the head and guts out and roast it with some butter and lemon slices in the body cavity

People really still do this? You can use anything as a weight so long as it sinks. Just J-B Weld a swivel to something or drill a hole in something. You need bullet shapes, that's easy too?

You are incorrect. All catfish have those spines that can stab you and "poison" you. Though, only saltwater catfish have actual poison and it is only as much as bee venom.
>>

Fishermen are the toppest tier of buyfags as you will ever know. It amazes me what lengths they go to get something that "looks good" yet works the same any anything that "looks shitty".

Bullet weights are 98¢ for a pack at Walmart.

Some people just enjoy making their own shit so whatever. But even if I lived somewhere with a lead weight ban, I wouldn't make anything like that. I think steel split shots are cheap and easy to find, but not so much for other weights so you gotta pay the high for tungsten.

I think I have seen the brass ones at Bass Pro but not positive. I mostly see lead and tungsten but I'm sure if you lived somewhere with a boner for shitty birds they would probably have more choices. Its okay pham others be hating. But do /diy/ ur thing. I do things diffrently too. Made this yesterday. Using old brass casings is nice. I always save my old pinch weights that are beyond using. And just melt them down. A 380 is about 300grams. And a 9mm is like 400. A .223 is like a ounce. Plus they look cool.
>>
>>854887
There was one other smaller one but it wasn't hooked near the mouth.

What is that even? A bluegill? I can't tell.

Also, I really need to get some Kastmasters one day. Months ago Skid was saying to get them and throw a regular hook on and run grubs or flukes or whatever. I have a couple spoons but never use them. But I always end up spending the money on something else.
>>
>>854891
Still lead tho.

A .22 would probably be good for drop shots.

Not sure how much a 22 would weigh is free.could make one if I can find a old casing laying around somewere. Im guessing only like maybe 150grams.

And yeah lead.. But at least with the brass it doesn't get all banged up or chewed up as easily. And you can see it flying through the air easier.
>>
>>854895
A .22 would weigh nothing
.32 acp or .22 mag on the other hand

Actually, I've done that before, but I use the clear nylon and a cane pole made from bamboo I grew. It is good for panfish and baitfish, you don't even need to bait the hook, just put some ribbon on it and make it a "lure".

>>854866
No clue, I've not purchased sinkers in years. All the gear I get is second hand. Like I bought a tackle box full of tackle last month for only $3 at a yard sale (and $3 more for a rod and spinning reel). It had lead sinkers in it, lots of snap swivels (pictured in >>854843), a few lures, and lots of gang trolls for lakes. We can't use lead here though. Making those weights cost probably around $0.001 each if that.

Fished the river at about 6PM today and caught lots of largemouth and bluegills which were the last fish I wanted to catch but were fun.

I am going to go backpacking in the rest of Canada, while in the wild I plan to make me a DIY fishing rod with a stick, a fishing string, a hook and a fishing float.

What are the tips you could give me to maximize my chance of catching a fish (technique and places)? I will probably hunt some worms as bait, but some tips on where to find them would be appreciated too.
>>
>>854992
Look up "cane pole fishing" on YouTube and Google

Worms can really be found anywhere just bring a trowel with you and start turning over soil near whatever body of water you're gonna fish
The key to finding worms is not digging some giant hole but to do many small holes that's really just turning over soil
Softer and more moist soils will have more worms

>>855135
there really isnt any "wrong" way to work a frog. What I find to be the most effective is to reel in 80% of the slacked line and to do short 6 inch twitches with the rod tip pointing down. If you practice and get the technique down your frog will pop side to side (commonly referred to as walking the dog) creating a lot of commotion on the water. When I first started fishing frogs I just did little pops in a straight line and that worked too. The biggest thing is just making a commotion in the water to signal a bass that there is a struggling frog trying to flee. When you get a blow up wait a second in a half to ensure that its got a good grip, then rip that sucker in
>>
>>855142
How often should I be twitching it? Like should I do it once then wait for a minute, or should I do it relatively quickly?
>>
>>855144
non stop until you you run out of line. Just keep a constant retrieve while twitching the rod tip the whole time.
>>
>>855144
Also if you are fishing a frog that has the little rubber strings like that pic I posted you want to trim them to be equal to the length of the body of the frog. It improves strike accuracy
>>

Idk, you have to be really careful not to spook them. 95% of the snakeheads I catch are on inline spinners but lots of people say topwater works well too. You could probably try rattlers or something too and I have gotten a couple on Texas rigged stuff. Only problem with soft plastics is they normally don't inhale the whole bait like bass, instead they grab it and try to run off. So with worms and shit, they will just grab the end of the worm and not the hook unless you give them plenty of time to get it before you set the hook.

They like to hang out close to shore in small weed patched. So if you are hitting the canals and stuff, try and run parallel to shore just past the weeds. I think the best time for sneks has been the worst time for bass, like middle of the afternoon when it is nice and warm.

There are tons of canals in the business parks around like Copans and Powerline, that's where I got that big guy a little west of Powerline. And then there are the lakes around like Powerline and Sample and Wiles. There are 3 lakes right there and they all have sneks in them.
>>
>>855182

Cool, thanks. I may have been spooking them. I'll check out a few more places probably today

You can definitely tell when they are in the area. When you walk past, they will shoot out of the weeds into deeper water and you will see a little splash from their tails and it is different than carp.

The one spot I like a lot is off Powerline. If you're going north on Powerline and you pass Sample, turn right on 40th Ct (the next stoplight). It will bring you back into this warehouse area. Where this red dot is, there is a gate in the fence and you can fish along this whole shoreline. If you go there, you will see the rocky shoreline and just run the Rooster Tail a few feet off the rocks parallel to shore and you will see the sneks coming out to hit it.

>>855185
One more thing about the sneks. If they take a shot or see you, it will be hard to get another bite out of them. But sometimes you can get them nesting or just chilling and they will chase the spinners but never really hit it good. When that happens, sometimes I will run the spinners by them faster and it just triggers a reaction strike.

Pic related was like that. It was just chilling in one spot close to shore and whenever I would run past it, it wouls chase it and give up but never actually get the lure in its mouth. Gave it one fast retrieve and it hit the spinner really hard.

That U-Shaped lake in this pic right by the red dot isn't bad either. I've been there a couple times and that's one of the lakes I know has a lot of snakeheads because they are constantly darting out of the weeds but I haven't caught one there yet.

I would definitely give it some pauses. If a fish is following the lure it'll strike when you pause. It's just the way they're wired.

It doesn't have to be a long pause just like maybe half a second. I've watched fish follow my jerk baits, cranks, chatterbaits, and top water and they always strike if I give it a pause.

If you get bored of that lake, there are two more lakes right there. If you keep going north on Powerline, they are both just north of Wiles Rd (the next light). The one on the west side of Powerline doesn't have a ton of spots to fish from shore from what I've seen. I live in a state where nearly everyone owns a firearm. Hell we took firearms to school nearly every day of the week in the 1980s just to plink with the teachers during lunch and recess. People here are very pedantic when talking about firearms.

He's definitely trolling.

He's the "kid" anon and everyone pretty much just humors him.

Back on topic, has anyone used the big beatle spins? I've never seen them larger than the small grubs for panfish and came across these in the new sports store. I've only used them once in saltwater so far but it landed me a couple ladyfish and a trout within the first hour on the white+black one.
>>
>>855618
>not knowing most of 4chan uses "kid" and its even been wordfiltered

>>855618
How big are they? I have managed to find some that fit 1/4oz jigheads well, but beyond that you might as well just go with the spinnerbaits with no skirt.

Underspins are still fun. I have been using those a lot instead of beetle spins.
>>
>>855623
these 1/4th oz ones, quite big considering I've only seen the panfish size and it didn't occur to me larger ones were made.

Also forgot to mention they were $1.50 each which is what made me decide to buy them. Definitely worth it imo, gonna try em out on the lake tomorrow for some bass.

I like those things. Get on some of those ~2" Gulp curly tail minnows or similar size PowerBait curly tail grubs and go at it.

If the Beetle Spins work for you, I reccommend trying underspins (pic related) if you want a slightly less flashy presentation but still need it to get noticed.

Only problem with the underspins is the only big ones I see are expensive. The 1/16oz and 1/8oz ones are only $3-$4 for a 6-pack. I see the 1/4oz ones at Dick's and Bass Pro, they are on something like a 2/0 hook look great for sticking on a Zoom Super Fluke Jr. or 3"-4" grub but they want $5-$6 for one of them. I don't understand why they are so expensive compared to the smaller ones.

I may take you up on that, I'm trying to make Saturdays my saltwater day though, got a group of guys from work that are trying to drag me into their weekly gig.

Another question, is it worth it to have another pole out with cut bait to botton fish? I love me some catfish and I figure there's gotta be plenty around here.

>>
>>855656
the spinning rod up top? it looks really strange to me like they maybe have the spool spinning because theres not enough room for the outside part to rotate
>>
>>855656
That's a medium? Damn. The backbone looks really thin on that one. Is it an older one?
>>
>>854938
>EastBayCAguy

I'm in Santa Rosa, let's go hit up the delta.
>>
>>855658
I used to have some older rods that looked like that, the blank is really thin where it hits the reel seat. Some newer ultralight rods are still like that, but even on older medium weight rods they were thinner. I think the materials changed and they used more fiberglass compared to the hollow carbon whatever blanks they are using now.

The colors in that pic, the red and silver, are on the newer Ugly Stiks instead of the red and yellow on the older ones which suprised me because I thought it was either a really light rod or an older one.
>>
>>855662
Maybe that was transferred from bamboo rods because bamboo is so gently tapered? I could be spouting be here but who knows
>>
>>855658
its just a weird angle

>>855659
Naw it's new. It says medium on the side but it definitely feels more like a light compared to other poles I have.
>>
>>855684
That's also the LOL Ugly Stik """Action""" but their casting rods aren't quite as bad. They are much heavier for a given size. A 6'6" M Ugly Stik for a casting reel will feel way more beefy than a 6'6" M made for a spinning reel.

That pic has to just be at a strange angle or something though. It looks like an old school design where the rod is much less tapered and the base by the handle is nowhere near as thick compared to the tip.

they're really hard to use (for a beginner), not really enjoyable. if you mess up a cast you have to spend like 2-3 minutes fixing the backlashed line.
on top of that there are no real benefits unless you are going saltwater

So I was at a pier today, and saw a lot of people fishing and it looked really comfy. I've only fished once, when I was a kid, and was wanting to pick it up for funsies and to get out more.

I guess I'd ask where do I start. I'm basically retarded at this and that pastebin is mostly moonspeak to me.
>>
>>855720
You will probably be fine with the one M combo. But if you are fishing little lakes and really want a second combo, either grab a light combo with a ~1000 series reel and 4lb mono or a MH with 12-14lb mono. The light combo will be great if you are getting lots of bluegill, perch, crappie, or small bass and some days you may use it more than the M combo. If you plan to go for catfish or carp a lot, do the MH combo.

>>855710
Spinning rods are more versatile. It's hard to cast light stuff with baitcasters so they are a bad choice for your only rod. The learning curve for casting and stuff will also be higher and not sure if you want to be frustrated with backlashes and knots while getting skunked because you haven't found the right spot or bait yet. If you wanted to get a memecaster for bass a month after you get your first spinning combo and have some practice, I would say go for it if you really want to.
>>
>>855799
The Pastebin is also mostly freshwater. Skid will give you a bunch of retarded advice but I would say go to a local Bass Pro and Cabela's, tell them what you are trying to do, and get set up with a Penn spinning combo the correct size for the pier and run whatever rigs and bait they reccommend.
>>
>>855801
Anywhere else? Neither of those have any local shops. Nearest Cabelas is a state over, and the nearest Bass pro is a 3 hour drive.
>>
>>855803

ask the folks at the pier for shops, what they've gotten success with baitwise, etc
