>tfw two days til the weekend
I can almost taste it. I need to figure out how to lose my job and get unemployment so I can go fishing daily for a few months. It's hard to even stay out until sunset without sleeping through my alarm the next morning.
Pastebin and Imgur. Thinkin about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Talk about fishin
>>844657
I kinda agree with anon here >>844663
Depending on your fishin holes, you may want to go a little heavier on the line. Idk if it's just me, but going heavier with the line on casting reels doesn't seem to impact casting distance nearly as much as with spinning reels.
If you aren't going to be hooking into lilly pads a ton, 15lb will be fine.
I'm hitting a lake Saturday that I've caught bass, pickerel and plenty of panfish in before. I just checked online and apparently there are brown bull cats as well. I'm taking the canoe out so I can hit the bottom in the middle of the lake. If I'm trying to get cats on the bottom, am I better off with nightcrawlers or chicken liver?
>>844668
No go 30 or 40
>>844670
Livers I'd say but either is fine
>>844670
I have always done really well with nightcrawlers when going for bullhead. Plus you will get the occaisional bass or something else with nightcrawlers on the bottom. But I never did chicken livers for bullhead so not sure.
>>844671
40lb+ is starting to get up there unless it's a setup mainly for heavy cover. 20lb casts 1/4oz lures really well, but 30lb seems more suited for stuff >1/4oz. Really depends on his fishin holes but he could def go heavier than 15lb. I do like the 15lb braid on my medium spinning combo however since it will still cast 1/8oz lures and rip through weeds well.
>>844665
Another ANON from the thread before this. I said I had 60 bucks for a new rod and reel combo, went with the abu Pepsi said was good, mainly because it had the most bearings... BEARINGS R GOOD!
but It cost me 40 dollars instead of 30, and I wasn't getting it online as I NEEDED a reel NOW.
spooled it up with my standard 12lb triline mono GREEN of course.
also got a shakespeare excursion rod, 7 foot, medium action, online reviews kinda scare me, I'm expecting it to break now. but the reel being 40 bucks I couldn't go half and half on rod/reel. so I guess im stuck with a 20 dollar rod until it breaks.. HOPEFULLY NOT. My other shakespeare rod I had for over 10 years and only broke because an SUV pulled too far up onto me, and snapped off the tip in his radiator. fucking spics...
OF course I went over 60 dollars because I needed new watermelon 6" flukes, and I bought some hooks.. and 1 top water popper [my only one I own now] and a H2O swim bait that I just cant wait to try! and some boring jump rings.
that's it. Might go fishing tomorrow. depends, doc has me on some different laxatives now...
>>844680
I live in Rhode Island (that's the one that's literally known as the Ocean State, in case you didn't know) and 99% of the fishing I do is freshwater. Bodies of freshwater are just more relaxing and I like their aesthetic more. It's also more fun to catch small fish on a small rod, it takes finesse. This is coming from someone who's gone deep sea fishing and has caught sharks bigger than I am, and I'm a fully grown man who weightlifts, so I'm by no means small. My best friend's dad growing up also had a boat that we went out on to go for stripers, bluefish and fluke.
Saltwater is for dorks, Pepsi did nothing wrong. Get over it.

I don't want him to do what I did: lose a bass on #20 braid frogging because the fish tangled up in some bull shit and it probably died with a frog on it's mouth
>>844700

>>844690
Here is what I do
>Cast out
>Tighten the line
>Clip a bobber to the line
>Open the bail of the reel /freespool
>If the Bobber lifts up or sags lower, close the bail, remove bobber, feel for fish
I miss fish maybe 10% of the time
>>844678
Did you get the Cardinal SX reel? The like pewter and gold Abu reel?
And Skid always reccommends those Excursion rods. I actually used to have one on a UL setup I gave to my lil bro and it's still going strong. Sounds like you did pretty good. # of bearings isn't everything but Abu Cardinals are solid reels for the price.
>>844680
Wut about peacock bass?
>>844792
Yup abu cardina sx30.
The one I played with on display Wasnt as noisy as I remember after I took mine out of the box and gave it a spin.. I did switch the handle to the right side of the reel.. Idk why it sounds like its making noise on the inside. Might crack it open tomorrow. And just stuff some reel butter on all its surfaces and see if it shuts up more. I mean its not TERRIBLE but its noticeably enough to be kinda annoying considering its a new reel.
Anyone else have a lot of small things that trigger you?
Mine are:
>beads
>those retarded 3/4 way pier rigs
>those little round bobbers with a red top and white bottom
>bream fishing
>fucking beads
>>844866
Beads are good though, they protect knots
And I use those red and white bobbers a lot
Not as bobbers though
>>844870
not really... they hit against the hook/weights and develop sharp points that cut line.
>skid the ohio salt pro
>>844873
What shitty ass beads are you using?
>>844866
>not using glow in the dark beads when catching small fish
I don't know about FW but I use glow beads all the time in crevices and caves on the jetties. They work better than having none at all
>>844866
Though spincast reels trigger me
The only time they're acceptable to me is while bowfishing

Typical divisional social propaganda. You try to make a side to be on so you can hate others that are not on your side as well as bring others to your side to prevent your own cognitive dissonance. The truth of the matter is that you are using "divide and conquer" tactics you learned from entertainment propaganda meant to keep the masses off balance and disorganized.
There are no "sides" to be on. Stop making up problems where none exist.

I want to install a drain on my aluminium boat
Do i just need to drill a hole and buy a plug or is there something i need to install in the hull?
>>844983
No, it's not as simple as that. Does it not already have a drain in the transom?
Type, size, description? Why do you want/need a drain?
>>844988
There is no transom
It's a 60 year-old aluminum boat my friend's dad gave me. I currently haul it out of the water onto this wooden ramp i built but it fills up with rain water
I want to install a drain so i can leave it unplugged on the ramp
>>844990
>There is no transom
Fuck i looked this word
Sorry English isnt my first language
I mean there is no drain hole
>>844990
The simplest solution would be to store it upside down.
This is another viable solution.

I have 9.9hp motor with it now so alone I cannot turn it

>>845000
Before I went drilling a hole in a boat I'd look into hand operated bilge pumps too. In fact, you should have one anyway.

Google "drill water pump". You can use these with a cordless drill. They are very cheap ($5USD) and easy to use.

Plz kill invasive carp before they get to Canada
>>845026
Not who you replied to but it's way too fuckin late to start killing them. We need to be harvesting them en masse and eating them.
>>845028
I read somewhere that aligator gar were being reintroduced to kill them but it turns out this was just a meme
>>845025
>is scenting plastic a meme
It is for those lures that aren't very good or the angler is reeling in too slowly. Basically, the lure isn't triggering the instinct for a quick hard strike and instead the fish is following or staring at the lure.
Scent isn't needed if the lure is properly designed and the angler is using it properly. There's also no scientific evidence that scented lures work better specifically because they are scented. It is much like fish and chicken shaped cat food. It isn't for the cat, it is for the owner to look at. Scented lures are much the same.
>>845036
Ya, no thanks.
>>845025
Maybe in saltwater but there's little reason to use it in fw. I've also tried spray scent and it's a total meme, it dissolves in seconds when it hits the water even when you let the plastic soak for a week. Gel might work better
>>845036

>>845070
Thanks i will look to buy this product
>>845082
When you forget to put it in you're gonna wish you'd bought the hand pump bilge instead...and had it with you.
>>844870
>And I use those red and white bobbers a lot
>Not as bobbers though
... what do you use them as, then?
>>845098
I buy big ones (1-2 inches) to clip to my line as strike indicators
They keep the line tight with the bail of my reel open and if they move up or down they mean I've got a bite
>>845102
Perhaps I'm missing something. How does that differ from the typical use of a bobber?
>>845102
I do that to when cat fishing. I also have a clip on bell.
>>845104
Normally, the bobber is in the water. Using this method the bobber is attached to the line between two of the pole eyes. The wire hook on the bobber is turned so it can't close and the line flows freely through it.
>>845112
>>845025
The stuff you apply yourself is. I like a few of the pre scented plastics, but they also have good action so the scent isn't a big deal to me
>>845123

Need some pointers on trout fishing
My state has a list of streams in a pdf and ranks it either "Trout Available Only During
Stocking Period" vs "Trout Available During Entire
Legal Fishing Season"
Im guessing since they last stocked it in april, and later upcoming this fall, that it's not the "stocking period" So what does this mean? The hatchery stocked trout are all gone and they dont survive the summer? While the wild trout streams are fished year round?
>>845126
Pretty much. It is literally elbow to elbow here when the local waterways get stocked with trout. It is crazy, they may as well buy fish at the store.
>>845110
>The wire hook on the bobber is turned so it can't close and the line flows freely through it.
Actually I put a loop in it with it fully closed so I can have my reel on freespool, that way if a big fish grabs it and runs the bobber pops free and the fish gets all the line to run with instead of taking the rod with it (I've had it happen)
>>845112
Pic related
>>845125
What happen when a really big fish takes it? Would it jam the bobber into the guide? That can't be good for the guide
>>845146
>>845112
Fuck the pic glitched
>>845150
That's what you use my technique for
The bomber presses against the guide and less than half a pound of pushing later it pops free; no jamming
>>845151
Awesome. Even better idea. I was thinking what'd happen when I went to set the line and the bobber wrapped around the pole about 4 times. This prevents that problem.
Very pleased with my new pan fish slayer gunna use it for bull head this weekend.
>Abu Cardinal SX10 reel
>Abu Vigilante 5'6" light rod
>>845154
Just pop it off before you set the hook; otherwise the bobber will fly anywhere from 5 to 15 feet away in some random direction and either get lost in the grass or brush or float away in the water
>>845155
>Abu Cardinal SX10 reel
I was looking at one of those yesterday in Walmart. Thoughts on it?
>>845172
best one they had at Walmart for pan fish. Holds a prefect amount of line, smooth drag, decent aesthetics. I cant find any negatives for it yet.
>>845175
The only negative I could find on it is no bottom drag. I really like bottom drag but I seem to be almost alone in that sentiment.
>>845031
I heard that too.
>>845036
Idk, some of the snakey lakes still have a lot of carp.
>>845175
>>845172
I've been using an SX30 for years. No complaints. Those Okuma Stratus V's from Dick's are really nice for the same price too.
>>845181
Shimano reels are the only ones I have seen with bottom drag in years.
>>845060
Because they just pool up full of water regardless and you'll need to bail water out of it just to remove it.
>>845181
yea I couldn't care less where the drag is on the reel. the fish I will catch with it are all going to be under a pound so drag really isnt a big issue
>want to go on fishing trip when I finish work next friday

When you guys fish for cats with dropshot rigs, do you just use a regular palomar knot with the hook directly on the line and the sinker underneath it, or do you have a loop so the hook is spaced off the line a bit?
>>845201
Standard drop shot rig here.
>>845207
Circle or regular baitholder hooks?
>>845188
Sure. If you don't know how to use a tarp I could see that.

Just beware of the "All my friends are guys because I just don't get along with girls." I have never heard a girl say this who wasn't batshit crazy.

>>845226
>Just beware of the "All my friends are guys because I just don't get along with girls."
Can confirm. Usually they'll say that they don't like girls because "I can't stand the drama and stuff." but in reality they're the worst of the bunch and the other girls just got fed up with their insanity.
>>845226

>>845125
do you put it on before or after you cast?
>>845247
Walk through the steps involved and think about what would happen if you tried to do it before vs after and see which one makes more sense.
>>845249
one way it wont cast very far, the other way i have to detach and reattach this thing every time i cast
neither sounds like a good idea
>>845254
>i have to detach and reattach this thing every time i cast
And realistically how long do you think that takes?
>>845254
>the other way i have to detach and reattach this thing every time i cast
You only reel in when you have a fish on. Which by your logic would be rather tiresome. If you get a bite, I suggest cutting your line.
>>845257
>imblyign they have inspections in shithole Kansas
>>845254
>i have to detach and reattach this thing every time i cast
>reeling in is a pain
>flipping the bail on a spinning reel is a lot of work
>"bait the hook!?"
>>845259
>If you get a bite, I suggest cutting your line.
This. I go fishing to relax, not to work. If I feel like a fish is biting my bait, I just cut the line right away and save myself the trouble. I don't want to deal with reeling that shit in or touching the fish.
>>845273
You should try just tying on a bell weight. No hook needed. That shit is relaxing until some stupid bluegill tries to grab it. At least you don't have to unhook them, just yank it away.
Should I be pinching my barbs down?
>>845277
Only if you really have trouble getting them out. I never do, bass have thin enough lips where it isn't an issue, sneks are ded anyway, and Mayans and Bluegill are easy enough to unhook anyway.
Maybe live bait it would be more beneficial because it is easier to hook them deep. But there is the trade-off of losing the occaisional fish you would've landed with a barb.
>>845201
Don't cats eat off the bottom?
>>845226
Wow what a body. Is that your gf?
>>845275
That won't work. What if a pesky bluegill bites it while I'm taking a nap and swallows it? How the hell do I get it out then?
Honestly what I did years ago was modify my rod so that all the eyes were razor sharp on the inside where the line runs through. Now, as soon as something applies pressure to the line, it breaks, and I don't have to deal with it. I did that about 2 years ago and I've never looked back. I've never enjoyed fishing more in my life.
>>845282
I guess if you could get the bait 6" off the bottom and out of any mud or vegetation, it could be an easy target. That's why I run my weights close to 2' up the line from the bait so it doesn't get buried in whatever silt or weeds are down there.
>>845282
They are predators and hunt for bait fish. Some species mostly eat aquatic invertebrates, but sport species are primarily bait fish hunters. Though, all of them are opportunists too.
>>845285
I had a Mayan keep grabbing the weight off a drop shot and I actually dragged him in a few feet. I should've let him totally swallow it.
Do I get a spinner with a tail or just a bare hook?
>>845289
Most people like the bare ones for trout or salmon and dressed for basically everything else. Dressed trebles will give it a little more action so I'm not sure why the bare ones are supposed to be better for trout.
>>845291
Trout are discerning connoisseurs.
Do you guys wade out into the water? It seems so hard to hit the good spots from the shore. What about if its at like a park and there are people looking at you? I'd feel like a weirdo.
>>845296
The dressed hooks almost look like a tail though, or something live when they are swimming. That's why I like the brown tailed Mepps since they use the squirrel tails and have a really nice movement. Rooster tails use feather type shit and I think the colored Mepps have a synthetic hair and it isn't the same.
>>845297
I do sometimes
>>845277
Depends
If you're in a bonefish blitz or similar crushed barbs on J hooks are beneficial because you can get the fish off and the lure back in the water faster
If you're using tiny flies (size 16 and smaller) barbless makes it easier to get hooks out
If you're going after fish with hard bony mouths barbless makes the hook punch into it better
But fish spit hooks easier
>>845311
I caught a snek a month or two back on my Mepps Agila #4 Snek Sleyer with the brown skirt and pink blade and this fucker got hooked directly through the center of the tonge. That fucking hook was not coming out. I waited to get the lure out until after I killed it because I had to pretty much rip apart its jaw to get my lure back. Ended up bending the hook too.
That Mepps is a champ. The skirt is torn up from snek teeth, the hook is bent, the paint on the blade is scraped up, and I'm pretty sure there is still a scale from a snek stuck on one of the hooks.
>>845314
>Snek Sleyer
The scale is still on there.
>>845314
Pepsi can I come down with you for a week so I can introduce you to the joys of salt water fishing, and we can gig/bowfish some plecostomus?
>>845311
>>845314
I carry kelly foreceps and needle nose pliers, both 8" long. I never have trouble getting hooks loose, even trebles in small sunfish throats. I also don't screw up the fish with these.I grab the hook, push it further into the fish mouth and towards the front of the hook. That way the barb more easily clears the hole the hook made. You can't do that very well with your fingers half the time.
>>845317
Nope.
>>845319
I have posted a pic before of the forceps I had with the curved nose but I gave em to Miami anon and still need to find another pair.
This also reminded me, I was driving some pickup truck at work a couple weeks ago and it had one of those tool boxes in the bed with a tool kit that had most of the stuff missing. Somebody probably forgot it in there 5 years ago. Found some pliers buried under old ratchet straps and there was this small pair that would be perfect for the tackle bag.

So i went catfishing a week ago (channels) and i seemed to have a problem hooking the things as i caught one fish with 5 or 6 missed bites by the end of the night. I only caught the one because he swallowed the hook.
I was running two poles, I was holding one with a size 6 treble
and some punch bait and had another with a 2/0 octopus circle with some cut bait and a bell on the rod tip.
Both rods had 1oz egg sinkers and a carolina keeper in place of a swivel.
They would hit with a single small tap, but then nothing. I tried doing a 2-5 second count after this to set the hook on the pole i was holding, but they were gone.
The circle hook rod would get that same tap, and i know your supposed to let them run with it, but there was no activity after the initial tap. I tried to reel down on them, but there was only one instance where i think a fish actually had it but i think maybe i didn't apply enough pressure or something.
After thinking about it since my best guesses are too much weight, too small a circle hook, maybe using a j or kahle hook instead and holding both rods. Also thinking i should have set the hook as soon as i felt the tap.
Im going to go back out tomorrow night after work.
Any advice/ideas?
>>845390
pepsi is black? that explains a lot.
So I wanna fish the Delaware. Plan on live lineing a bunch of bluegill and seeing what bites. There's a pond by my house I can pull like 40 an hour from, and wanna know the best way to transport them to their destination alive. Plan is to go to the pond super early and then bring em an hour or so out to the Delaware.
>>845398
They need oxygen to be kept alive. I don't know how much water you're putting them in or how many there will be, and what rate they will die, but an air pump like the kind you'd use in a fish tank will keep them alive. The problem is that they usually need to be plugged in, and unless you head down to Pimp My Ride I don't think you'll find one with a car adapter.
>>845395
He's a thin, red headed Irishman, in my mind, and as white as six Fs.
>>845394
>2/0 octopus circle with some cut bait
Your bait is probably fouling the hook. 2/0 is way too fucking small. You need 7/0 or 8/0 for that style of hook. The opening between the hook point and the shaft needs to be 100% clear at all times, needs to be as wide as possible, and you need to hook the bait diagonally so it can't flip up and close that gap. The bait must rest in the very bottom U section of the hook, not on the shaft.
Circle hooks are far different than J hooks. You can hook a fish anywhere with a J hook, but a circle hook is designed specially for hooking the fish in the corner of the mouth. They also must be tied on the line using a snell knot. That is important.
As far as setting the hook goes, that depends on the size of your bait and target fish mouth size. If it is a small enough bait and a large enough mouth, they will "inhale" it in one gulp. You have runners and spitters. The latter will gulp and spit almost instantly, that's the single tap you get. You don't want those. You want a runner. Let the line freely spool out. When there's a hit, let the fish take it for about 8-10 feet of line (be patient.) Then lock the line, pull hard, and get some backwards running space of about 5-10 feet. You want to prevent slack line as much as possible.
Good luck.
>>845399
There are portable battery operated aerators but I would use a floating fish basket to keep live bait. In my experience they last longer that way
>>845398
>>845418
You'll need to keep them in bags/buckets with water from their original home. Once you get to your destination you need to put the container(s) into the water so that it will slowly reach the same temperature as the destination water. After 20-30 mins you can start exchanging the water in the container(s) with the destination water. Treat the process the same as bringing new fish home to your aquarium.
>>845399
>I don't think you'll find one with a car adapter.
>>845415
I had a feeling the hooks were too small, but my friend insisted they worked for him
I do actually have some 5/0 and 7/0 hooks, but i forgot them at home. I also have some 3/0 kahles but ive never tried them.
I was aware of how to hook it properly and of the Snell knot, so i guess the hooks were probably too small then.
It also seemed that all the fish that hit that night were spitters though, so what should i do when they are biting like that?
Thanks for the help by the way
How do I successfully fish from the shore? I can usually catch something if I'm fishing from a boat, but I get skunked 4/5 times fishing from the shore. When I do catch something, it's usually a tiny sunfish or baby bass.
>>845406
ive always imagined him as a prime military white guy. Probably because that's what all of the pepsi vendors I've ever seen look like.
>>845429
you generally wont have much luck getting bigger bass from shore unless it's a tiny pond.
Try for some catfish, it's a lot easier to get big ones from shore.
>>845432
Oh well, the lake has nice views at least. How is shore fishing from rivers? I have a nice one right outside my campus. I'm guessing I should fish above the dam not below it.
>>845429
if its really shallow or weed covered by the shore then.. you dont. find a canoe or a kayak. shit even a little inner tube would work
>>845433
it depends on how deep the river is & how fast it's moving. What state are you in and what river?
I'm in florida so I fish the Suwannee and it's just about impossible to fish for anything other than catfish from the bank. If you're somewhere that has trout (looks like you are) you could probably do pretty good walking down the bank throwing a spoon upstream or something.

Going to San Pablo Reservoir this Saturday. Caught a couple of baby bass on a 1/16 oz spinner last week, I'll go back and take some bigger spinner baits. Removing the swivels had a HUGE impact for me, I recommend it for everyone else.

Need a bit of advice if anyone's interested.A bit of info if you need to know anything.
The area I live has a river that reaches about 8ft deep in the middle, and when my grandfather was still alive, he used to pull walleye out of there like it was going out of style. Now, I went out there for the last 3 weeks at 5:30A.m to 8:00A.m and then usually head back from 8 to 11p.m like what we used to. The problem is, I've used just about anything and everything imaginable for walleye, from crank baits, live, fake, rattles, grubs ect. But I can not get a single bite to save my own ass, anyone have any sort of advice on lures/baits to use and what not to use?
>1k pack of split rings came in
I've ordered a 100 pk of treble hooks. Next month I'll order a 120 pk of SS spoons from a restaurant supplier and select the paints I want to be using. Then I'm off to the races with spoon making.
Can't wait.
>>845755
Your earlier posts (I'm assuming you're the same anon) inspired me to make some of my own. I found stainless split rings at a fabric/craft store but bought some that were too small, gotta return them and get some larger ones. I've got 4 spoons cut, sanded, and drilled with treble hooks at the ready. Thanks for the idea man!!!
>>845757
Same anon. Glad to read someone likes the idea too. The split rings I have are "#3 Heavy Duty". Here's a photo of their size.
The distance from the edge of the spoon to the edge of the drilled hole is the biggest factor of the ring size you can use. If the distance is too wide, you'll stretch out your split ring (like my first spoon) or not be able to fit it on. You can get rather close to the edge with the drilled hole. I recommend using a center punch to help lock in the drill bit tip. Also, I use a tiny drop of oil where the whole goes when drilling.
>>845738
You ever do the river rigs with small shiners?
I don't have a ton of experience fishing rivers, but when I was younger almost every weeknd we would go out for walleye and whatever else would bite. We used these river rigs that were like pic related crossed with a Lindy Rig. They had 2 or 3 hooks on them and blades and beads. Throw a minnow on each hook and wait. Never failed.
I guess otherwise with lures just follow the basic rules of river fishing and find a good spot. Cast upstream, find the spots with little to no current and go along the edge of those.
>>845758
I bent one ring all to hell trying to get it on. They're about 3/16ths of an inch so they're just too damn small. I should've brought along a hook and spoon to get the proportions right. Only $2.50 spent/lost to the cause which is still less than one spoon.
And I've got about 30 spoon...cups I'd guess you'd call them....left over from making spoon rings out of the handles so no cost there. This is a no brainer for me.
>>845495
Yes. It was my first baitcaster. It's ok. Being my younger retarded self I figured if I disassembled it and cleaned/lubed it would be even better but I'm pretty sure i lost a piece while doing so and now the spool release button is all fucked. Not that bad of a reel though when it worked
>>845761
>And I've got about 30 spoon...cups I'd guess you'd call them....left over from making spoon rings out of the handles so no cost there.
Nice. I'll have tons of spoon handle parts left over after this, but I'll be using those to make more lures. I'm also going to test out splitting the spoon itself in half length ways (red dots in pic) to make 2 lures. I want to see what kind of cast and action those will have. If that works well then 1 spoon can make 4 lures.
>>845764
>>845495
Most of the cheaper baitcaster from reputable brands aren't bad at all. They aren't as smooth as the 28 bearing $450 model and may not have all the bells and whistles but they won't fall apart on you.
Also, these companies often use very similar designs across the whole price range. The extra price comes from materials when you go from plastic to CNC'd aluminum to carbon fiber.

I already have one. It is too tiny to hold large fish through the winter. Only sunfish and turtles survive from year to year. A deeper pond can't be made due to how the land is, for under $20k. Mine was one that would have cost $8k but I got a discount for only $5k because it wouldn't fill up correctly. It took about 6 years to stop being a mud hole. If I'm lucky, it can be dredged to be deeper for "cheap". Right now it is only like 2.5-3 feet deep.

>>846068
>>846077
Something similar happened in my town about 5 years ago. This one pond was always glistening clean water and then one year there was suddenly shitloads of algae and vegetation that creates this siffocating mat on the water surface. It gets so bad that by July you can't see any of the surface at all from shore to shore. They still haven't totally figured it out either.
There's a road that separates this pond from a smaller one with a culvert that passes water from small pond -> big pond (pic is right on top of the culvert), and the small pond (behind the camera) doesn't have any of this shit in it. So the runoff is coming directly into the big pond, and thus not getting upstream into the small pond.
Pic is from google maps but doesn't show the problem nearly as bad as it actually is right now. It looks like you could walk right across it. People don't boat or fish on it anymore because you can't. Nutrients/runoff, or climate change?
>>846119
Have you tried a frog and heavy braid?
>>846110
No, everything is a steep hillside here and requires way too much fill. Hence the massive expense. Also, since it would be a pond, it has to be dug by someone licensed and have a special permit. That's to ensure it isn't made incorrectly where it would wash out and flood people down stream.
If I could go out and rent a dozer for this I'd have done that 25 years ago.
>>846122
I don't fish.
>>846112

Will you ever go?
>>846124
>Also, since it would be a pond, it has to be dug by someone licensed and have a special permit

>>846136
In the USA. You have to get a permit and have the pond inspected in every single state. You are in deep shit if it bursts and you didn't get it passed during inspection.
>>846124
Ah, I see now. That sucks :(
>>846119

>>846146

This must be it. Someone on the lake must have gotten goats or other domesticated landbeast and it's leaching down the banks into the water. I would imagine the EPA would be all over that shit, seeing how closely they monitor construction sites and building permits for impacts of runoff. Hmph.
It's been raining all day and I want to fish.
Fuck you weather.
>>846150
Mepps never fails
Ackshualy in Texas you can build a pond that holds no more than 200 acre-feet of water without a permit.* So if you were to build roughly a 3x3 acre pond (assuming it's square for simplicity's sake) it would be about 20 feet deep. Seems like a decent pond to me.
*This is an ag exemption so it has to be for ag uses, but you could totally put fish in it.
You can also build a pond using a well that pumps less than 25,000 gallons a day for "domestic use." i.e. You can't charge people to use your pond, or make monies off of it. But that wouldn't be a very big pond.
Source: I work on a ranch and have duh out stock tanks and I don't have any kind of permit.
Also, here's one from A&M

How do you fish large, wide open lakes without much cover? I just moved to gainesville and am about to hit pic related with the kayak. Should I just paddle out to deep water and throw a jig or something?
I've always fished around the bank and cover but thats in small ponds that are covered in sunken branches and lilly pads. Here, I don't know because I don't have a depth finder.
>>846153
You can probably report it because like you said the EPA doesn't like when farmers are careless and dump their shit into what I assume is a body of water on public land. If it's privately owned then there isn't much you can do
>>846147
You're not going tomorrow. Seriously when will you go?
>>846172
Points, inlets, dropoffs, weed beds, and othet structure. Always takes a bit to figure out new lakes.
Will bass actually chill in 20'+ deep water? I always fish from shore so I don't know.
I want to get to Lake Okeechobee one day. I guess throughout the entire lake, the average depth is only 8' so there has to be so many spots for bass to chill and still be able to get to them with most lures.
>>846168
You can't fish in it though. You need a TNRCC permit for that.
>>846119
>>846146
>>846157
>>846174
I just did some google dotcomming and it appears that a few years ago the water treatment upstream stopped retaining phosphorus and are instead leeching it into the water. According to the report the Army Corps of Engineers did an assessment of the river/pond system and deemed it suitable to absorb the increased nutrient load. Seems like a load of schidt to me (no pun intended) but it's the gummint doing it. ':|
>>846172
Fish that point that comes out. Also look at the differences in bottom condition (grassy, tall weeds, rocky, sandy etc.). Another good thing to keep track of with big open bodies is the wind direction. Bass seem to like to stack up towards the shore in which the wind is blowing towards. I'm not sure about this specific body but I know for the ones around me there are several forums that you can find for fishing lakes that will give you some good tips
>>846176
I figured to look for structure but it's quite deep and like I said I don't have a depth finder. I haven't actually went out on it yet but I'll probably get it figured out eventually, I got plenty of time to.
You ever target specs? I've heard people are pulling 13+ inch fish out of here quite commonly and thought it'd be a good nostalgia blast from when my dad would take me. We always just used minnows under corks which always produced well, but I prefer artificials. Was thinking about trying some of those little rooster tails at walmart and see if they'll like em
>>846179
What a bunch of fags. Oh well. It won't really affect the fish population, they actualy prefer the weeds in warm climates
>>846183
We're pretty far nawth as well so frankly it's a bigger ice fishin' spot anyway, in which case none of this shit matters. Still, I was taken aback because it looked like someone was polluting it.
>>846177
Lol what? No you don't. You own the water in your pond you don't need a special permit to fish it.
Caught this guy earlier today, now he's supper tonight and breakfast for tomorrow. The pike in my area just can't resist spoons.
>>846181
Specs?
And Rooster Tails are fine, but Mepps are superior as far as inline spinners.
Sounds like you just need more time on the lake. I rarely see people on boats fishing in the middle of lakes. They are always closer to shore and running along weeds or other structure. Is there a creek or anything running into or out of the lake? That's normally where I will start at a new lake because there is guaranteed underwater structure.
>>846193
Skinny guy but he's pretty big. Noice. How long was he?

speckled perch/crappie
>>846199
Oh crappie. Ok. Yeah, I used to get them a lot when I was in IL. They like Rooster Tails. Always did well with smaller ~2" Rapalas for perch too. And they love curly tail grubs. I would get a 1/8oz jighead or underspin and a ~2" white Powerbait curly tail grub and do work. Sometimes use a beetle spin on the jighead.
In pic related, you can see on the right side I have the white curly tail grubs on jigheads and/or underspins.
>>846199
All sorts of shit like this is great for crappie and bluegill if the bass aren't biting strong. Those white grubs on a Beetle Spin have been one of my favorites since I was a kid.
>>846207
Fair enough. I do enjoy my scramz and boiled eggs a bit runny myself.
>>846209
The only time I ever use grubs are for spotted sea trout, can't wait to see how the do here. Probably gonna buy a new ultralight spinner tomorrow and 4-5 bags of assorted grubs/maybe some rooster tails.
Will definitely pick up some beatle spins, the green ones are my dads favorite panfish bait.
>>846213
You can buy just the spinner blades too without getting the whole beetles spin pack. I already have a ton of assorted jigheads and little plastics so I just get the packs of blade or use underspins (on the left). Underspins are great, even Walmart has them.
On a side note, I'm now confused as hell. I thought I had a bunch of gold Beetle Spin type blades. I remember grabbing one out of the box the other day and now I don't know where the rest of them went. Not sure what happened but I need to get another pack of I lost them because for some reason gold blades seem to work better than silver 90% of the time.
>>846220
I've never seen a jighead like that at wally world.
A Dicks just opened here so I guess I'll try it out. They look interesting enough to want some, I bet they'd be good for trout too if they come bigger.
>>846220
Did you tie a double dropper rig or two yet?
You'll want some for the ocean tomorrow
>>846225
I bet Walmart has the Underspins but you just didn't see them. They will come in a little blue package of like 5 or 6 and they normally have 1/16oz and 1/8oz in chartruese with a silver blade. Bass Pro and Dick's have them too, but you normally have to look in the crappie and panfish section and not by the other jigheads and spinners. Bass Pro and Dick's also have the larger 1/4oz white ones but they want like $6ea or something stupid so I refuse to buy them when the 1/8oz ones are $3-$4 for a 6pk.
Pic related is all sorts of fun shit I have to play with on the UL. A lot of it is better for bluegill since most decent sized crappie have no problem taking down 1/4oz lures but depends on the fish and how picky. Those Mayans by me will hit Mepps #3's and some medium Rapalas some days but other days I have to get something tiny for them to show interest.
I posted a pic of the Mini Mites earlier in the thread. You can see a handful of those in the pic on the left. They are incredible for panfish and I can't figure it out.

I'm sure the Mepps grab bag would be cool. They make all sorts of interesting shit besides Agilas that you don't see much anymore. Lots of it is that old-school stuff that seems to work when all of the fancy swimbaits and cranks are failing.
>>846253
How many lures do you get from the special?
>>846226
those rigs are retarded, just a carolina rig with a piece of shrimp/sand flea/cut bait works fine and is way less time consuming to deal with.
The majority of the time I pier/surf fish it's with a carolina rig or free lining.
>>846264
if you get small ones (#00,#0,#1) you get six. #2, #3 size you get 5. #4,#5 size you get 4
>>846269
Dayumn that's very good for $10. I can't decide between #00-1 and #2-3 yet though.
>>846272
they only include left over lures in the grab bags so they are just trying to get rid of them
>>846272
What do you go for? #00 is tiny, I have a few and barely use them because it's hard to even get action on something that light unless you are just jigging. Larger bluegill and most crappie will still hit #2's fine. I probably have more #3's than anything because they will hook bass well and could take most crappie up north and are good for most sneks down here.
>>845760
We've used Lindy rigs before, but the main problem is that the river we're on has aggressive carp (I wish I was kidding about this) and they go after everything from leech, plastic baits, minnows ect. How my grandfather and I would usually catch them were with rapalla 7's silver and black and cast them up stream and bring them down river and we'd catch them from ranges of 15-19 inches at least. As for minnows themselves, the stores in the area no longer sell any so I'm s.o.l there
>>846283
Fucking carp.
You can still do nightcrawlers on the Lindy or River rigs. Get a syringe and blow the worms up with some air first so they float.
Plus pumping air into worms until they assplode is fun. I remember how much fun I had when I discovered that the syringe in my dad's tackle box wasn't just for heroin.

But as for lindy rigging for walleye, are there any recommended lures/baits you could recommend?
>>846281
I had fun catching small bass on a 1/16 oz. spinnerbait, but I'd mostly use the #1 to catch pan-size fish. I have a light rod and use 6 lbs fluorocarbon so they fit my setup.
I plan on going catfishing for the first time tomorrow. They stock my lake monthly and I have treble hook with spring and lots of baithooks for catfish, what setup should I use and what kind of bait?

I'm a big fan of it. Compared to the bullshit dough bait balls, dip bait is incredible. It's best to buy the dip bait hooks or rigs like in the pic. Nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and any other barel alive bait will work.
>>846289
You could probably just ask your grandma for one.
And idk what else for walleye, I always went with those rigs when fishing somewhere with walleye. I know lots of people will troll deep diving cranks for them. They are just another predator fish so spoons and spinners should work too.

At least I'm employed in a job that's not going away where I can surf the internet all day. A warm, dry desk job isn't as bad as some people want to believe.

Bring one rod you'd throw for catfish and one rod you'd throw for bass, then hose them down really well every time you're done with it

So update, I end up using a leech with this on my first try,a few nibbles here and there and a few sensitive hits I didn't pick up on until too late, but about the last hour before calling it quits, I had one hit and run that fought me for what seemed to last about 30-45 minutes, by the time I got it to the shore I saw it was a dotted brown fish with a hook like jaw, and it had a red side, but end up snapping the line at the last minute, pretty sure it may have been a trout of some sort, but damn am I going to try again later today.

You can also make your own spinners for pretty cheap. Theres a startup cost sure. But it could be worth it. Ive built a few. But lacking an airbrush they come out kinda plain and boring.

Skid, you're retarded. I told you that was tomorrow!

>other South Florida fags?
I'm right here but I'm a salty. Want to hit the juno pier?
>>846476
Idk, I really don't like going north of Boca. I'm bored as shit though. Let me think about it.
What is the deal with that 99-L? I thought we were going to get poured on all day tomorrow but I haven't heard shit about it the past couple days.

I don't know but we have like a 20 percent chance of rain at dusk. I'm probably just gonna bring my rain coat and try to winch in some snook.
>>846482
What are you using for the snooks? I'm kinda interested, but I could drive 5min to the Deerfield Pier instead of an hour to Juno.
New bread incoming soon...

Depends. If they're in a feeding frenzy I use spoolteks, storms, bucktail jigs or any soft plastic. When they're a bit more reserved I'll use a live croaker or pilchard.
You don't even have to go to the pier if you hate the crowd. Snook are cruising the shores all over florida right now. Just wade in the water, bring your bass gear and start casting at dusk.

nah, it didn't have a long solid fin on the back, and the clear up any confusion it was a red stripe on it's side that ran up to it's neck.
