#76-"Is it September Yet?" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>839249

I can feel it. The weather is finally going to start cooling off soon and maybe the bass will get active again. Also it would be nice to be able to fish during the day without sweating. And fuck Sundays. I would love to just go fishin all day, but instead I'm stuck doing laundry and other stuff that needs to get done and stressing about waking up at 4:30am for work tomorrow. Saturday is the only day of the week I can really enjoy.

PepsiFag, those types of spoons are normally silver. You want the ultra cheap Chinese stainless steel ones 4 for a $1 from a Dollar store or $5 for 20 at a yard sale. Just not the ones that have emblems and states on them.

Anyway, here's the spoons I just made from 1 spoon. Including taking pics, this took about an hour. Then again I didn't have everything set up to make a bunch of them. Normally, you can break down 1 table spoon into 3 lures in about 15-20mins when you get a rhythm going.

The weight of these is pretty good for casting. the two smaller ones have good action in the water. The large one is nice because you can use it slow or fast. A slow retrieve makes it look like a Lazy Ike underwater. Fast retrieval makes it spin. The big spoon was flattened just a little bit, fyi.

I'm going to academy on the 24th. Broke my reel two days ago, and I have no more backups. was an open bail style, and the handle could be switched to either side, and I guess the threading that keeps it screwed in, just gave up the ghost and it just free spun, and I had a good sized bass on the end of my line, that i had to hand twist my reel from the top, while fighting the fish.

anyway. I got 60 bucks to get a new reel and rod [all my rods are missing the top eyes] last time I was there. I saw a nice bail that was like 30 bucks, some generic brand, but oh god so smooth [ive been using my own stuff i got like 10+ years ago] and I suppose a decent enough rod, shouldn't cost more then 20 bucks. Im thinking about a 7 foot, MAYYBE 8.

soo umm, anyone got coupons? LOL
>>
>>842760
Do they have store brand rods and reels like Bass Pro and Cabela's? A store brand combo would probably be the best bet for that price. They go on sale a lot more than the big brands too. Late summer and maybe some deals will be coming up.
>>
>>842761
yeah all my fishing gear is FUBAR and I don't really want to wait until the end of summer. [does summer ever REALLY end in florida?] I have no reel, and janky ass rods..

are all the internals metal, and it at least have more then ONE ball bearing?

im use to taking apart my reels and nigger rigging them when they break little shit, but the plastic tier bullshit I just throw in the trash when it breaks.
>>
>>842784
I believe it's all metal and like 3 or 4 bearings. It's a simple reel, but not plastic or anything.

Abu Cardinal SX reels are like $39 but go on sale for $30 a lot, 6 bearings and I have been running mine a lot for quite a few years with no issue.

If you have a Dick's nearby, go grab an Okuma Stratus V. Those go on sale all the time for $30 and are super smooth and look good too.
>>
>>842792
where you get parts from? just like ebay and shit? I keep mine greased. normally I use reel butter, just because its easy for me to get, and its safe around plastic. so rarely does shit break because it got rusty/corroded.
>>
>>842799
Never actually bought parts, but I have an old Abu reel I was going to fix and Abu has links to 3 different sites that sell everything for their reels from decades back and all the schematics are online. One was eReplacementParts.com

I wouldn't reccommend a box like that. Get yourself a tackle back, assorted hooks and weights, maybe bobbers, and then a couple lures for whatever you're trying to targer. Build the collection with good stuff as you find out what works and what doesn't.

>>842812

Kinda. But I mean it never gets over 90F and there is always a breeze. The sun will fry you on a bad day though. I normally go out at like 6pm so the sun is lower in the horizon.

Yeah, I need to make a few more that are painted and have dedicated hardware.

>>842859
Those are "split rings". Hardware, fishing sections in places like Walmart, and online are the places to get them. I just pull some off other lures, temporarily for these. I recommend you buy them in bulk as they are much cheaper that way and they have tons of uses.

>>842849
No, I don't drink stuff that has bottle caps. I just drink water & homemade wine (which is why I make poppers and lures with corks) and I don't know anyone that drinks anything that uses bottlecaps.

If I were to make some lures with bottle caps I'd probably flatten them and reshape them completely.

Hammer with towel protecting the spoon. When I'm cutting and stuff I use vice grips to hold the metal. I use paper in the vice grip jaws to prevent marking.

Normally, you size the split ring to the gap and pound test you need. They can be small to pretty big. It depends on the lure. Size #3 heavy duty would be .296" Outside Diameter and 60lbs test for instance. The higher the number the larger they get. The thicker the wire they use the more pound test they can handle.

Just ebay search, as you'll see a ruler and the ring sizes and how much they can hold,

don't get a stocked box. get a box and load it up with size 8 baitholders, size 2 o'shaughnessy hooks, a mix of slip shot sinkers, a mix of bobbers with lots of small ones, and some swivels beads and egg sinkers for carolina rigs.

start out fishing worms below bobbers and then using any really small fish or chunks of bigger fish on carolina rigs

Are you fishing in,

Saltwater
off a pier
off rocks
off boats

Freshwater
off boats
in big slow rivers
in clear mountain streams
in farm ponds
on lakes

Are you fishing for,

catfish
panfish
turtles
sportfish

So on and so forth. Every one of those dictates what type of bait and tackle you should be using for maximum effectiveness.

Normally, you can't go wrong with,

bobber + baithook + live nightcrawler
santee cooper rig + cut baitfish/live baitfish
carolina rig + plastic worm
inline spinner
jitterbug
swimbait (expensive)
popper
gang troll/lake troll (expensive)
weedless buzzbait
weedless topwater frog
rapala original floater or similar lookalike
guide to typing most fishing knots

I've been thinking about making a few. I just need a good source for the stainless steel hardware. I have plenty of hardwood I have access to. I'd probably make them out of green sycamore since it is hard, has good density, and works easily while green without checking or splitting. I just need to test out how well eye bolts work with it as to how easily they can be loosened and pulled out while fighting a fish.

They are so expensive that making them at home is a very viable solution for me and I can sell a few at fairly cheap rates to recoup any money I spend on making them. I doubt I could make them move as nicely as the ones in >>843008 from

Well after I catch a big fish on one to see how it fares, I'll upload a picture here so you can see the fish and the lure I caught it on.

If the lure is still in one piece, then I'd recommend it.
>>
I was wondering the other day about using a soft foam form to coat with tool dip for making frogs. Basically you dip a foam mold in the tool dip and let it dry. It seems so easy that I'm sure someone has done it already. You could even paint the foam before you dip it so you could remove it when the tool dip is dry. That way the frog body is more squeezable for weedless use.

Cool post some lures, look around at some of the lure making forums youll notice that lot of the guys are using azek to make swim baits and glide baits. it have a neutral density which helps in getting then to swim properly. wood is fun I make a number of lures out of wood by carving or on lathe and but azek is really making it all so easier. Its a great median to play with. Though I havent gotten to the "roman made" level I find it satisfying when myself and others catch on my homemades.

for ss parts theres a few suppliers..are you in the usa?

It's some kind of really strong synthetic cloth. It looks like there's one strip running the length of the whole body, and the segments are put on around that.
>>
>>843113
I don't have the large stuff anymore and all the small stuff, /lure/ has already seen more than once.

I can import from anywhere in the world, so that isn't a problem. Most stuff is just blank stock that needs bent into shape anyway. However, for a swimbait I'd probably just use a door hinge system.

I also have a massive piece of ABS plastic gasline, 2 feet in diameter and like 16-18" long that has 1.5-2" thick walls I can cut blanks from and wire up.

I wound up getting the Fenwick ss medium heavy (10-20 pound line, 1/2 to 1 1/2 ounce lure, 8'6" long) on sale for 55 bucks instead of 109

Did I do well for a pairing with an ambsx5600 that Pepsi paid to have spooled with #30 powerpro (pic related)
So that makes about a 190 dollar combo for less

Who socal OCfag here.

I need advice for fall season. I want to try freshwater fishing but I have no idea where to go for bass fishing. Most lake here are filled with carp and catfish. It's too early for trout stocking.

I've been surf fishing, but the last grunion is in a week and sandcrab is digging deeper as water cool. I might not see a lot of halibut and corbina anymore. Perch will hopefully come this winter if the water is cool enough. What is a good specie to go for during fall inshore saltwater

What GoPro camera are you using? Also, are you using Movie Maker? If you are, you can adjust the aspect ratio under the "Projects" tab between Widescreen and Standard, which may remove the black bars on the sides. It normally defaults to "Standard".

Small marabou jigs tipped with maggots or 1/32 ounce jigheads with a nailtail or curlytail on it 1-5 feet under a float depending on water depth
>>
>>843669
>1-5 feet under a float
25-30 feet deep here.
>>
>>843700
they always gather around stumps and fallen trees in shallow water. you have to get right up in the cover and drop it in between branches. if you are fishing for them deep don't use a bobber and just use a vertical jig tipped with a minnow.
>>
>>843716
The guides in my area say they're 25-30 feet deep just on top of submerged trees/weeds. The thermocline is 23 feet.
>>
>>843721
Add to that I didn't catch a single one near the usual trees/docks from 2-10 feet.
>>
>>843721
if they're that deep you'll have to find them with sonar. locate structure that looks like it is holding some and vertical jig over it. start one-and a half cranks off the bottom and just slowly move up until you find them. they usually will be very close to the bottom though. also tip your jigs with minnows. trolling very slowly around drop offs and points can be productive too. try to find river/creek channels.
>>
>>843722
crappie have a very subtle bite as well. it's not like a bass where they just hit the shit out of it. every now one will, but normally its like a small low powered vacuum cleaner sucking up the bait. they also have very delicate mouths so just slowly add pressure one you feel the weight of the fish to set the hook. don't horse them in either or you'll rip the hook out of their mouth.

I founds out about a pond here with bullhead and carp. can't find shit for hair rigs here at all so i'm going to go for the bullheads, anyone got some suggestions on what to grab? #6 - 1/0, 2/0 hooks and some stinky artificial bait?
>>
>>843834
Idk about the other anons, but I have never gotten a bullhead on stink bait. Always nightcrawlers.
>>
>>843834
And why no carp? Just get some regular aberdeen hooks with a can of sweet corn or get trebles and use white bread.
>>
>>843841
While we're on the subject of carp, if I'm using sweet corn and trying to get common carp, do they bite better in the morning or the evening?
>>
>>843840

might as well grab nightcrawlers, much cheaper

just throw em on a hook, split shot, and sinker?

>>843841

dunno, was told they'll just suck everything off the hook unless i use a hair rig by some asian
>>
I have gone fishing at my nearest lake about 4 times now and head out for 3 hours each time casting and reeling my lures and try different retrieves and different lures but I have yet to catch my first fish. Do I need a boat? or what am i doing wrong?
>>
>>843843
No clue on that. I have caught carp at all times of day, they are always just roaming around doin their glug glug thing.

>>843845
Pretty much for the bullhead. I have gotten them on bobbers set deeper too but probably just best on the bottom.

They may go for stinkbait too, but the ponds I used to fish all the time as a kid I would never get bullhead on stinkbait even though I caught them fairly often when I had nightcrawlers out. Also if you ever go with stink bait for channel cats, get down on dip bait and not dough bait. The sticky shit that comes in jars is much better than the dough balls. You normally want these special rigs that have treble hooks with sponges on them for the dip bait but they are cheap and even Walmart should have them.

And for carp, I have no idea what Asian dude was talking about. Never used a special rig for carp. I like to put a fairly heavy weight a few feet up the line so I can keep the line tight after I cast it. Then wait for the rod tip to start bouncing and set the hook. Never had a problem with carp swallowing the hook.
>>
>>843849
What time are you going? What fish are in the lake? Are you moving around a bit and trying different spots?

The water is also warm now, so bass and other fish may be pretty deep during the day. So if that's the case, find a drop off and fish around there at dusk or dawn. Also with the heat, predator fish are lazy and want an easy meal which is why Texas rigged worms and crawdads fished slower on the bottom often work better than bright flashy baitfish imitating lures.
>>
>>843859
I usually go early morning or towards dusk like you said, and yea I have only been using swim baits like lipped minnows and that lure thats like a spoon but alot skinnier. I will try a texas rig since i just got some worms in my lucky tackle box this month
>>
File: image.jpg (3MB, 3264x2448px) Image search: [Google]
image.jpg
3MB, 3264x2448px
>>843860
Yeah go for that right around dusk. Get some bullet weights (maybe 1/4oz) and some offset worm hooks for the worms and try it out. Cast them out, let them hit the bottom, and slowly give it little twitches and hops along the bottom with pauses in between. Make sure you are moving too. If the bass are being lazy with the heat, they aren't going to come from very far away to get the bait.

Being in South Florida where it is high 80s and sunny from April through October, the largemouth will rarely hit crankbaits for all but 3 months out of the year.
>>
>>843862
Alright thank you I will try that but a quick question, is the bullet weight on the front of that worm freely sliding? is it just so you can cast the worm farther or what is the purpose of the weight .
>>
File: image.jpg (95KB, 630x630px) Image search: [Google]
image.jpg
95KB, 630x630px
>>843865
Weight slide freely.

If you watch it in the water after you give it a twitch/hop, you can see how the weight will slide and fall back to the bottom faster than the worm and it gives the worm a more natural action.

Without the weight, the worm will probably float and won't cast as far. There are weightless presentations too but try the regular Texas rig first.
>>
>>843866
ok thanks so much for the tips man

image.jpg
2MB, 3264x2448px
>>843867
Just remember when you start getting bites on Texas rigged stuff, it is a little different than fishing with cranks since the hook isn't on the very end of the bait. I wait to feel a nibble, then give it about 2 seconds to make sure the bass has the whole bait in its mouth, then set the hook. You will figure it out.
>>
>>843869
Cant wait to go try this out on the weekend, I kinda lied when i said I have yet to catch my first fish, when i went up to eureka I went fishing in a river with a small crank bait and caught 2 sacramento pike still really small but I am really after bass so that why i dont count those two
>>

>>843903
Looks good. Depending where you are fishing, you may want to keep the barb just inside the worm too. A lot of times when I rig them, I will just barely pop the tip out of the plastic without getting the whole barb throgh and that works well. If you get that stringy algae bullshit, the hook may collect quite a bit with how you have it rigged now and if the snags are really bad you can keep the barb and tip completely inside the worm. All depends where you are fishing and what kind of cover you are coming through but that pic I posted earlier shows the hook coming through more than most people do it.

Can't seem to find a video anywhere. As I said, locally produced by some nutcase although some shops here in Denmark carry them.
If I remember and time allows I can try and record it some day. Till then you gotta make due with a written description:
Action varies quite a lot depending on speed. Spin fast and it rotates around itself almost like a spinner. Move it slow and it wobbles from side to side like most spoon lures(? What are these called in English?) in a rather big lazy pattern.
Medium speed somewhere in between.

The trout in the fjord seem to love them. I guess they would work well for bass, perch etc. as well. No time to test that these days though and being from Denmark there is no bass around here anyway.

Soft baits are cheap compared to other stuff.

And I've never paid $8/pk for worms but that is just Yamamotos. I have a ton of $4 Zoom bags. I'm a fan of the Strike King plastics though and they are like $6 for a bag.

Japan and Australia share a sport fish called bream (different to the bream in the US) that are pretty good sport fish. Taste OK, grow up to 40cm and a real challenge on lures, satisfying when you finally catch one.

These guys advice on bait is good but don't listen to their rigging
Buy a pack of octopus circle hooks, size 3/0 or 4/0
Then buy pantyhose
Use the toe as it is to net the chicken liver then use the hook to close the open end after cutting it
Then tie a knot and repeat that method
And bring a sharp knife of box cutter cause you will have to cut the used pantyhose off of your hook
>>
>>844223
I love them for salt warer bottom fishing
I've never had a gut hook with one
Let them run with it till you know they have it, then lock down the drag and you've got a fish on

Anyone have any advice for fly fishing? I've been practicing my cast the backyard for a while now and think I've about got it right. Getting a straight line most of the time with no coil-ups. Went to the river the other day but didn't catch anything. Was using a dry-dropper setup. Is this a good rig for a beginner or is there something else I should try first?
>>
>>844398
Top water is a very specific thing, and is less than 30% of fly fishing
Buy pheasant tail nymphs size 12-18 and some strike indicators
Go out and turn over rocks and see what bugs are under there
Pick a nymph that's closest to that size (it's better to be a size too small than a size too big) and tie it on to a 4x or 5x tippit
Then just dead drift it through a hole bouncing bottom and watch that strike indicator. If it does anything weird-flinches, pauses, moves at all strangely, set the hook. You will either hook into a fish (probably a sucker, baby smallmouth, rock bass, bluegill, or something similar) or be halfway into your next cast. but the technique transfers over easily to trout, salmon, and steelhead
Or you can buy some size 10 wooly buggers and either dead drift or swing them with no indicator and you'll probably get something (also transfers well to trout, salmon, and steelhead)
>>
>>844421
Okay. Another thing I'm noticing is when I cast the line will "snap" kinda like cracking a whip. Feels like its something that shouldn't be happening.

Also, would you recommend a strip-set or pulling back on the rod to set the hook?
>>
So my father and I are planning a trip up to Sandy hook nj in mid October and were wondering what we need to know to get stripper and blue. Any advice will be helpful. I'll have several combos and they are as follows
12 foot beef stick with a Penn mag 525 spooled with #20 suffix superior high vis
10 foot beefstick with a daiwa opus 5000 bri with #20 suffix superior
8 foot field and stream rod with an okuma avenger 4500 and #15 pound test (either a sabiki rig or a snagging rig for bunker)
8'6" Fenwick silverhawk as with an Abu Garcia ambsx5600 spooled with #30 power pro (I'd probably either throw small bucktails or a sabiki or snagging rig)
An 8 foot Berkley big game rod with a reel I forget with #20 Cajun red (more of a loaner/backup than anything)
A 9 foot rod with a reel I forget but its quality and spooled with easily 190 yards probably more of #20 suffix supperior, and an 8 weight fly combo
So basically two heavers for cut bait or eels, two rods for heaving lures, one for catching bait, and one for fucking around if we manage to limit out.

If anyone can give advice it would be appreciated
>>
>>844427
That's very bad, it puts a lot of stress on your tippit and weakens it. Let a longer pause before the cast, you should almost feel the line pulling back against you

And for a hook set I pull on the line and lift the rod, a similar motion to starting a double-haul cast

No snek bites and the largemouth don't like to get going until the sun is going down so I decided to break out a Mini Mite or Mighty Mite or whatever they're called and haul in some Mayans.

Another half hour and the largemouth will get going but I have to be at work around 5am tomorrow.

When I do freshwater, I normally bring 5-7 rods with. 2 baitcasters, 6'6" 15lb braid, 6'6" 20lb braid, 6' 10lb flouro-braid, and then I will add the 6'6" MH President if I want to huck something heavier or for panfish I have an older Quantum 10 with 10lb braid on a 5'6" ML rod or the Sienna 500 with 6lb braid on the UL Ugly Stik. Can you spare 80 dollars?
Buy a daiwa beefstick 12 foot and I'll sell you my Penn long beach no. 60 full of #30 mono for 15 bucks and shipping
Make it 25 and I'll include some rigs that will get you sharks, stingrays, drum, and other things for sure
That will leave you another couple bucks to buy a nice big mullet, a few pounds of lead in the form of 4 ounce pyramid sinkers, some #80 mono, a bait knife, and maybe some lures
Combine that with bass gear and there isn't much under 70 pounds you can't handle

>>
>>844617
I would always just get some bell weights, tie them on a couple feet above the hook, and toss it out. I try to keep enough weight on there where I can tighten up the line and just watch for the rod tip to start bouncing. No idea if it's the most effective but it works.

Carp and cats are going to eat completely different baits though...

Sorry pal but the sewing thread method is superior to pantyhose

With the thread you just wrap is around and you're good to go
I've never had any problem with it coming off the hook or flying off during casting and I use a pretty big setup so I can get some real distance and speed behind my casts

With the thread you don't have to worry about rigging up the pantyhose and then having to cut it all off later and the whole thing is just unnecessary
>>
>>844627
I've never had a problem with them. The mono ones I tie myself tangle up more and I've never had a mono one out produce the steel one by more than 3 fish
I mean if you give them a spray at the end of the trip they last for years and are only about $1.50 each

Thoughts on rods for BPS Xtreme memecaster?

I'm thinking something at least 7' but no more than 7'6"

MH or M?

I won't be throwing anything real heavy I prefer to go lighter than heavier when in doubt so it's mostly about maximizing casting distance here with typically 1/4oz up to 1/2

I figure I'll spool it up with 15# braid

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a BPS reel. Their stuff is suprisingly good and respectable for being store brand. Dude who works at Bass Pro said he believes they are made by Abu Garcia aka Pure Fishing.

And the M vs MH, you probably want to play around with the rods first and check out the action. Some M rods are much faster and casting a 1/2oz crank barely moves the tip. So much of that is just preference. Same with the length.

>>844639

>>
>>844651
A lot of the BPS brand stuff has Abu Garcia internals, at least I know their trolling reels do.
>>
>>844654
I'd go with the MH. I don't like how much bend most M rods have when I'm using jigs on the bottom.

This is just me, but I like my frogging rods to have a slower action cause It helps me walk the dog, so I wouldn't want a frogging/jigging combo. If it doesn't make a difference to you then go for it.
>>
>>844654
Check out those BPS Johnny Morris rods. I think they dropped them in price and they are only $90 or $100 now instead of $120.

Also, Dick's had those Abu rods on clearance, I believe it was just the micro guide casting rods. But the Veritas rods were like $80 instead of $120 and Veracity rods (or whatever the $150 one is) were $100. Some of your local stores could still have them in stock or maybe they are available online.
>>
>>844654
You want a medium heavy for sure then if you want to frog and jig. As for the brand just go to the store and see how they feel. Surprisingly there is no set industry standard for weights and actions of rods so each brand will actually be different. Make sure to grab some good 20-40 pound braid depending on the weed cover too
