Got to my big bass lake a little too early today, and just managed to get one medium sized largemouth before the heat and wind got to me. Damn wind shifted and I didn't want to walk half a mile around the lake to get the wind at my back.

Then went to the peacock lake and once again crystal clear water and picky fish make it impossible to actually catch them. Got some nibbles on a lizard and some shots at those KVD™ Perfect Plastic™ Frogs. It's hard to get a good hook set on those when running them fast and weedless though.

I do it for frogging. Because when you're frogging you have to reel in a bass plus rip whatever shit he is buried in out with him. I've broken #20 braid on bass, but gotten a Ray 5 foot wide on #17 mono. Basically imagine every fish you hook is half way under the pier and you have to be sure you can drag anything out of there.

Looks pretty old, but it's sealed.
Could I use this as a leader?
>>

Probably
>Use
Nope
>>
>>793035
Probably. Tie one end to a tree branch, one to a stick, then pull on the stick. If it feels like it's still 25 pound test it should be fine for leaders.
>>
>>793040
Never used 25lb mono before, how much should I use? How often does it need to be trimmed? Thanks
>>
>>793023
you have to have line strong enough to set the hook and then pull the bass through a good 5 inches of vegetation which accumulates weight very quickly if you do not rip the bass out onto the surface
>>
>>793023

I'm done breaking off probable personal best bass on lighter mono and floro due to cover. If the fish throws the hook then fine but I am done with breakoffs.

>>793035
What are you trying to use it for? Like skid said, maybe use it for leaders after you test the strength. As long as it stayed out of the light and didn't get super humid, it may be fine.

>>793025
It's ok, at least I was driving my car and not a semi truck. I can't do nearly as much damage in that.

>>793023
It's braid so it works real well on the baitcasters. Plus you kinda need to when you fish heavy cover. Pulling a 5lb bass out that wrapped the line in weeds and lillies can be fun. I use #10-#20 on most of my stuff so I don't have to worry as much about losing that big guy. But the #30 is good for throwing a 1oz Texas rig or jig into heavy cover. #8-#10 mono will break off real quick even with a 2lb fish in some of these weeds. Pic related is how I always pull them out at my one lake.

>>793022
What ever happened with that one that broke? Are they going to warranty it?

>>793008
Do they still make rods out of fiberglass? Not fly rods, but regular rods. I remember my dad's old St. Croix fiberglass rods and you could easily bend the tip back to the handle but goddamn I don't think I would want to fish heavy jigs or T-rigs on the bottom with one of those.

Pic was from Friday evening btw. It was raining all afternoon so rush hour traffic was extra fucked. Bumper to bumper and dude on bike comes lane-splitting through.

10min later I pass dude and his bike laying under a car.

Dude yesterday was telling me about how if you are waiting for an organ transplant, FL is one of the best places to be since so many bikers get killed every year.
>>
Why would anyone fish with lures and a non-fly set up? It seems stupid to me to even use a lure, it is disgusting that you have to use technology and other shit to catch a fish. I am perfectly capable of catching bass of all sorts on a non-cheating fly rod. Do you feel no shame?

And no comment on the lane splitting. It's legally not allowed in Florida so the law isn't on his side, but it could have been any number of things that caused that. I've only lanesplit a few times but when I do I'm careful about it. Usually it's at stoplights when my bike is overheating. I'll filter to the front then take the Fuck off. Repeat as necessary.

>2000lbs
Still not close. The car is probably 4000lbs. Not sure what my truck weighs, but probably around 40k when it is loaded.

>>793069
Maybe one day I will get on a fly rod. The same day I start saltwater fishing. But I think it will be difficult to get anything besides bluegill, cichlids, and real small bass on them since big largemouth stay so deep for 45 weeks out of the year.

>>793081
Lighter line, heavier weight. On a spinning reel, make sure the spool is filled to capacity. My one reel is still like 20yds short of what it could hold and I'm probably losing 30% of the distance on my casts.

If you are using mono, you could always switch to braid. If you have 8lb mono on there now and can cast a 1/4oz lure 25yds, you could probably put 10lb braid on there and cast that same 1/4oz lure 40yds.

Longer rods will cast a lil further too. I think next baitcaster I'm gonna do a 7'.

Bass is pretty btw. The guy a caught today had like no color or pattern.
>>
>>793091
Posted the wrong picture but he was a little longer than my boot. I forgot how much mono stretched and how hard you had to set the hook so I missed a couple that were biting.

>>793092

>>793098
Wut? How the hell would that work? After you already get stung, you rub the belly? Or you rub the belly when you catch it and it won't sting?

I think trout are the ones where you can rub their belly and it almost stuns them. Just makes em incredibly calm.

I really need to get out catfishing. Glad the punch bait worked. Punch and dip bait is so much better than that dough ball shit.
>>
>>793097
Using 8 lb mono on 6' rod with 3/4 sliding weight. My fishing buddy is able to cast it significantly farther than me but whenever I cast the weight tends to travel higher in the parabolic trajectory and go to the right whereas if my buddy casts it, it stays low and goes straight out.
>>
>>793103
Like after you get stung you rub wherever you got stung on the belly on the cat. Swear on me life it works.

Today I was just kinda fuckin around so I was just chillin in one spot, tomorrow I'm gonna move around a bit and try to catch some dinner.

>dough ball shit.
Can confirm ball bait a shit. I have like half a bag of some I might use to just kind of bait the area

>>793104
Sounds like you just need to practice. There are different ways to cast depending on what lures and weight setup you are using. Sometimes you want to lob it a little slower and higher and other times you want to flick it really fast.

>>793106
The dip bait and punch bait is also nice since you don't really have to touch it. The dough bait bals, you gotta squish them on the hook and they make your hands smell so bad. With the dip and punch, just find a stick and whip it into the lake when you are done.

Did you use regular treble hooks? If so, did it work well? I'm sure you could use the dip bait rigs or the trebles with sponges on the dip bait. I also have these trebles with a little spring looking thing around the shank and they are made to hold dough bait on there better. But if the punch bait stays on the hook fine, don't fix what aint broke.
>>
>>793113
What kind of reel is it? I thought Fenwick just did rods. They normally have Pflueger reels.

Either way, sounds noice.

have, no want yes, have a shit ton of inline spinners and spoons and some plastics, need me some top water and shallow divers.
>>
>>793116
Yeah I was just using a plain size 6 treble. It seems to stay on pretty good. If I left it in the water for about 10 minutes some would be gone, but I think most of it would come off when I was reeling. I could've also been getting some bites because I'm using a 2 piece uglystik, with gander mountain mono, so it's not the most sensitive thing in the world.

How well would it work with circle hooks? I'm assuming it wouldn't work too good, but I really hate dealing with treble hooks.

>>793122
Topwaters are so fun when the conditions are right. If you can see the bass jumping in the early morning or late afternoon, get a popper out there.

And for the shallow diving cranks like square lips, they have their place. I probably use suspending jerkbaits more in those conditions though. They normally chill just a couple feet underwater. But Original floating Rapalas are great for running in shallow water.
>>
I have a baitcaster that I used like once 7 years ago before the rod broke (tip snapped off somehow) and I haven't used it since and I'd like to get a new rod for it and spool it up with some 30# braid but I know nothing at all about baitcasters, the couple times I used it I ended up with some serious backlash

I know the little knob is the brake, how should I set this?

Also what is the dial with the numbers?

And what is the cog looking thing, is that the drag?

Good luck with a circle hook.

Pic related are the ones made for the dough bait.
>>
>>793023

I usually fish for catfish, and don't really bother responding if I want to catch anything else.

I felt horrible when I went to a little pond in a subdivision that was full of 12-15 inch channel cats and decided to go with some 5lbs fluorocarbon leader I had used earlier in the year for trout.

No more than 15 minutes later, I'm sidelined by a much bigger spawning male. I fight him for several minutes and I'm just about to reach down and pull him out of the water, when he summons one final burst of strength and snaps the line.

Then I remembered why I stick with 30 lbs braid.
>>
>>793132
Watch some youtube vids maybe. It also takes some practice.

The star knob by the handle is the drag. The other knob on the handle side is the spool tension. And the knob on the other side with the numbers will be the brakes.

Best bet is setting the brakes and spool tension fairly high until you get comfortable and then start backing them off until you find that balance. And you gotta change them up a little when you change lures.

Didn't get the big one

Pic related is the biggest one I got

I won't stop until I catch the lunker
>>
>>793132
To start out I'd do this

>how should I set this?
Hold your rod straight out, and adjust it until the lure you have on slowly falls when you're free spooling.

>Also what is the dial with the numbers?
That's your magnetic/centrifugal(?) brake. It helps keeping the spool from turning at the end of your cast, which is what causes backlash. I'd start with it somewhere between 6-10 depending on how confident you are.

>cog looking thing
That's the drag.

When you start I would suggest doing side arm cast, then move to overhand. Also, don't try to cast too far until you get comfortable with it.

>>793135
That's what I figured. I might give it a shot tomorrow anyway.
>>
>>793113
hey no problems man, hope it works out.

A fisherman falls in love with a baby catfish .
Unable to catch the fish, he is gifted with unlimited red worms and nightcrawlers from his local baitshop. Never minding the poor choice of bait and 100 degree weather, he immediately goes out fishing, and is overjoyed to find out that fish are biting.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s catfish, he only looks at the fish with a perplexed expression "THIS IS NOT SIR NIBBLESWORTH".
After some investigation, he finds out that the catfish he caught is not the same catfish he fell in love with. In fact, the fish doesn’t exist in this lake at all. She is the fish’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private fishing secrets in order to equip the other with the bait and lures they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two fish for their respective loved ones,DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question theNATUREofFISHING.

Actually going to pair the reel with a 7' baitcast rod soon but thought it would be funny to put it on an ice fishing rod since its more typically spinning reels that are used in that role I believe. Went back out to shit river yesterday. Started off with a nice 3 mile run in 95 degree heat then cooled off moving rocks around to dam up a small hole. That worked pretty well and I added at least 6 inches of depth. Had lots of baitfish prowling around when I left.

The top water bite was slow. Noticed some bird poop had crawfish shells in it so I rigged up a 1/16oz jig with a crawfish pattern on my ultralight and cast out over the far end of the sandbar. Got so many bites just slowly working it past the edge of the main channel.

Gonna go back today and dam more.

Released this weekend at Playalinda, Fl. Caught on a piece of ladyfish.
>>
>>793392
why release? this thread taught me to kill all predator fish like snakeheads and sharks. i stab them in the head then cut in half and toss back
>>
>>793395
Snakeheads are invasive to 'Murica so yes definitely do not release them. Word is they're actually good to eat. I release all the sharks I catch. I figure we have an unspoken agreement that I don't kill/eat them and they don't eat me. Also shark populations are on a dangerous decline already. I'm actually working on getting tagging equipment from the state so I can tag them.
>>
>>793395
Incase you aren't trolling, predator fish are good. Invasive (snakehead) fish are not. Don't be killing bass because they're predatory.
>>
>>793420
I kill the small Bass I catch so the big ones can grow. I keep the big ones for eating.

Even if I'm not getting bites, I can start changing up rods, lures, and techniques and it will keep me interested. And none of my stuff is even that expensive. My most expensive setup I only paid ~$200 for the rod and reel. Retail is like $300 but gotta try n get them deals. Second most is $160, and then most of the other ones I use are right around $100.

>Up to 150? Is that usual? All the ice fishing pics I see include dozens of guys out on a lake. Are they all drilling dozens of holes?

150 holes isn't that crazy, and yes most people do it. Especially for perch. I use a hand auger and end up drilling about 20-30 holes in a day. The key to big lakes is moving around until you find the fish.
>>
>>793541
when im alone i drill 4 inch holes by hand, when with my fishing buddies we use a 5 inch gas drill,
it all depends if you find the fish quick, Ive had days where i drilled 3 holes and only fished one of them

>>793551
Well ive seen a seven pound bass pulled through one of the 5 inch holes, that and ive pulled some monster pickerel through the 4 inch hole , if you catch anything huge, you break out the auger and drill a second hole nearby, then start chiseling ( ive only ever heard of it happening one with a carp

Well, you're right it can be cold. Just have to be prepared. A portable shanty and very warm boots help. Also the ice at the start of the season is only about 5-6 inches thick and that's the popular time to go. And clearly you've never tasted fresh yellow perch fillets before...

Hard water season is series biz here in upstate NY. Makes grown men act giddier than school kids in early January when subzero temps are in the forecast.

Gonna stop by Bass Pro and head to a peacock lake.

No sure what to get at Bass Pro. Don't want to spend much so I'm thinking of looking for a pack of some brighter lizards or brush hogs.

Reading up on the peacocks, people are saying prop-type topwaters work well. I grabbed a firetiger Skitter Prop awhile back, but it is pretty large. Maybe I will grab a medium sized one of those or Heddon lure.
>>
>>793570
And +1 for the yellow perch. I'm not a huge fan of fish but yellow perch is definitely my favorite. I'm sure some fried perch fillets are GOAT after a long day of getting drunk on the ice.

I may have had a second peacock on too. Got it right in the same lillies as the other one. But I think he just had the end of the crawdad in his mouth and I couldn't set the hook.

I need to find a good lake to fish with peacocks though. The couple I know of, they are those damn lakes with the drop-offs. This one is like that and there is one underwater weed bed where I was getting everything today. Beyond that, there is lots or shore to fish fom here but I'm just not sure where to go with how it drops off.

Leuciscus aspius. They are pretty common here in Czech rep. They are the smartest cunts ever. You can only catch the small ones on lures. The big ass asps (I've seen 90cm one dead on the shore) will follow whatever lure you throw at them right down to your feet.

I wonder if they are in the shad family then. Lots or larger bass can be like that too. As well as almost all of the peacocks and the snakeheads. They like to just follow the lures and check them out really good without ever biting.

I'm starting to learn that sometimes when fish are being picky like that, the only shot you have at them is to run the lure past them really fast. That way they don't have time to follow it and check it out. If they are interested in it, they have to hit it right there.

That was me. I haven't really ran them much, but I liked the action they had with a weighted worm hook. I tried some Texas rigged with a bullet weight and that worked out alright too. I don't think I ever tried weightless. Might put one on today and see if I have any luck.

The snakeheads are pretty damn fun to catch. I still need to find some better peacock spots. I mean that lake I was at today is decent as far as not totally overfished and you can fish from shore fairly easily. But it is one of those damn ultra-clear water lakes with the steep drop offs a few feet from shore. It's difficult to find good structure and vegetation to fish around.

First step is getting the little rubberbands...

Those cranks are a bitch to fit into the Plano boxes because of the fat shape and the lip. I would probably just get a 3700 box for them, cut out a ton of the dividers, rubberband the hooks so they don't tangle, and toss them all in there.

Jesus...

That's too much even for me. But I also don't run those trypes of cranks much anyway. But if you run them a lot, you lose a lot so might as well stock up.

>>793815
I haven't eaten any but it's supposed fo be good.

And why would you book a guide? They're all in a bunch of urban lakes and canals. If you really wanted the best bet, there is one canal system where the snakeheads are pretty much limited to so you could try and take a kayak or some small aluminum boat up and down that. I get my snakeheads in a few lakes right off that canal.

And the Peacocks are all over once you get into Broward and head south. Maybe even a couple spots in Palm Beach County. I had some guy tell me about lakes in Boca with peacocks, but I mostly see them south of 595. I know they are in NW Broward a little bit too but I haven't really fished those lakes.
>>
>>793819
The little rubberbands are easier than those tbqhwy. I was going to do those but then used the rubberbands and they end up being way more compact as well. They have them at any Walgreens in the hair products section by the combs and shit. A bag of 300 is like $2.

Think about just grabbing the flat plano boxes though, fuck the dividers, get the hooks taken care of, and dump em into there. You could leave a couple dividers in but I have taken a dremel to a few of my boxes and just cut them out to meet my needs.

There's no way I would ever be able to cram my cranks in one box if I did those hook covers instead of the bands.

Nah I'm using dip bait with trebles. I guess it's a timing thing. I'll figure it out eventually. I'm kind of enjoying the more passive style of fishing, compared to cast, reel, cast, reel, ect.

So I spooled my rod today and put a yellow jighead on it.

Gonna try to fish this weekend. Is the yellow one in pic related okay size for grub/panfish/maybe a bass fishing?

What kind of action do I use with this again? (Aka how do I use fishing rod)

>Nah I'm using dip bait with trebles

Catfish have a tendency to "mouth" their food and swim around as they slowly eat it. This can take several seconds. If they feel significant resistance, they'll just drop the food and keep moving. They're foragers.

If you have a heavy weight tied to the line directly to the hook, the bait will just be pulled from the fish's mouth as it swims away. If you use a lighter weight (just light enough to get the casting distance you want), then the fish is more likely to just keep going.

Also, keeping your bail open, setting the drag really light, or just using some slack and watching your line, you can feed the fish line without it feeling any resistance.

A Carolina, Fish Finder, or Knocker rig is also great, as it allows the fish to take line and not encounter much, if any resistance from the weight at all.

>>I'm kind of enjoying the more passive style of fishing, compared to cast, reel, cast, reel, ect.

It's my favorite. Not constantly moving/casting lets you slow down and realy soak in nature, talk, listen to music, etc. My wife prefers it because I can get all set up, then we have a little picnic by the water.

And once you get your first big cat, you'll be hooked.

Catfishing knowledge also translates well to a lot of other kinds of fishing. I found carp fishing, trout fishing, and salt water fishing very easy to get into because it was all just minor variations on catfishing.

Hello everybody,
Literally first time on /out/. I'm looking for a total beginner's guide to fishing. I live in Calgary so I figured I might as well take advantage of all the trout we supposedly have.
What's the best resource to start learning? There was nothing on the sticky.
>>
>>793982
If you don't know anyone you can ask about it irl then just look up Youtube videos with any question you have.
>>
>>793983
fair enough, any personal favourites on youtube for learning, or any Alberta region specific resources?

sad to say if your just targeting the stocked trout your best bets either powerbait under a float or suspended of bottom.i fish em outta some of the stock lakes here in bc, traditional worm works too, but you get alot more pumpkinseeds then trout, its fine if your looking to play with em but theyre usually too dinky to eat. man i wish these trout were more active for lures but ima have to go down to the river and aim for cutties if i want to fight fish.

like >>794269 says you can use a bobber/bubble to do what you want.

a slip bobber rig is nice since both the waves from the water will create a natural action, and you can input jerks without alerting fish to the bobber.

if there's a nice current break, you can put a jig on a slipsinker rig to imitate a fry fighting the current. The only thing is that where you cast is really important since it wont produce the right action if you cant get the bait to flutter in the water.

Anybody have any tips for fishing out a canoe for summer lake trout? I'm considering letting my line out to 15 meters-ish with a threeway swivel and sinker/lure but I don't know what kind of lure to "troll" with from a lazily drifting canoe, should I just use worms?

The lighter the line the further the casting distance

That's where mono beats braid

Lots of sturgeon in San Fran bay. Went with the wife and we were gonna get a charter boat the morning before ww flew back home before they bailed on us.

Horn head chub. Also, salt water fishing freaks me the fuck out, and I fucking worked at A&M as an assistant to an ichtyioligist while getting my bio degree.

There's just more shit down there than you can imagine, and a bazillion variations of it.

main line would be 4wt fly line

the clear bit is your leader (tapered or not)
then theres the tippet which the fly is tied to.
cut off the leader and reattach a new one.

nail knot, uni to uni knot are the knots youll need to use unless the flyline has loops on the end which i sort of doubt.

depends on what youre fishing for also. people also use braid to allow a lot more yardage on the reel for fish that might spool you. on my bluefin reel I have 400+yds of jerrybrown with a topshop of 40yds of mono.
you can toss a live mackerel 60' super easy with 80lb test. if the fish get line shy then i can clip off the 80 and tie on another lighter top shot..

on my striper/bay rods i set up like you.
