So if someone breaks into your house wherever you live (presumably the UK, you guys are always stupidly fucking ignorant when it comes to real life and continue to argue about it) and intending to harm or kill you, what are you gonna do? Yell real loud? Pee your pants and throw up on yourself so you don't get raped? Jump out a window? Cry? Pray? Beg on your knees? I guarantee you all your unarmed police laughing stocks are going to do is show up to clean up your corpse. Greenland has a very low population (55k) and this "rate" is based on incidents "per 100,000 people". If you look at the pure numbers only 11 people were killed in Greenland so it's a bit misleading.
>>
>>766081
Right, that's the point, the amount of guns could actually be even higher in many areas where it appears low. Surveys are useless.

Mature.

I literally posted an article specifically about Australia in my earlier post, a special one, just for you. In case you have a hard time finding it, here's the jist:

"In legal terms, Australians have a right of self-defence. While some states rely on the common law and others have it enshrined in statute, the right itself is never questioned. Moreover, juries consistently refuse to convict those charged with serious offences whenever self-defence is made out.

What we don’t have is the practical ability to exercise that right. Possessing any object specifically for the purpose of self-defence, lethal or non-lethal, is a criminal offence. There are many women, raped and/or murdered, who would have been liable to prosecution had they been carrying anything that might have saved them."

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/opinion/an-assault-on-our-right-to-selfprotection/news-story/f743f8b76f21a586a6efb2396c9b2f8d

In other words "hey criminals, we're all unarmed, come fuck us up and do whatever you want to our women and children, we will not defend ourselves." That is the message you are sending. You are literally banking on the good will of others for your own safety. Good luck with that.

Here's another for you, just for fun: http://m.baka.com.au/comment/lindt-cafe-hostages-like-the-rest-of-us-denied-the-practical-right-to-selfdefence-20141218-129q4r.html

>Has to ask where I came from
>Travels back in time and posts article specially for moi

You know what an editorial is, surely. Here's a tutorial: it's opinion, not bound by factual correctness. Like fox news, but actually labelled as opinion.

It's not even clear what you're trying to say any more, you're just getting all butthurt over yourself.

Mass shootings in Australia in the last 20 years:

Zero.

>Mature
You know by taking this so seriously you're showing how lacking in content your argument is?

>factual, scientific, proven

You have to be fucking kidding me.

Can you legal carry a fuckin gun? No? Then you don't have the right to defend yourself with a gun.

Can you carry anything else meant for self defense and actually use it in self defense? No? Then you don't have the fucking right to self defense.

How hard is that to understand?

>zero mass shootings
Holy shit lol! Here's some more, only in the last 20 years of course:

Port Arthur Massacre (1996): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)

Monash University shooting (2002): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monash_University_shooting

Hectorville (2011): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Hectorville_siege

Not to mention the Lindt Cafe hostage takeover a couple years ago which I already mentioned.

Also not to mention that most murders don't happen in "mass shootings" anyway. I am focused on one-on-one self defense. If someone wants to kill or seriously injure myself or my family, it is a crime against morality to deny me the right to dispatch them in any responsible manner I see fit.

Spread your legs for criminals some more.

DIfferentfag here. I'm just going to jump in and (hopefully) end this before a multi-tool thread gets relegated to /pol/.

The idea that "having more options for self defense" by carrying a gun is better than not is fundamentally like having more options for starting a fire in the woods by carrying a flamethrower is better than not. Sure, technically there's some truth, but there's a better chance of starting a forest fire with the flamethrower.

There's a similar case to be made with firearms. It's been fairly well demonstrated at this point that guns (in America):

>Are more likely to be used to escalate arguments and increase socially undesirable or illegal acts
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1730664/

>Are more likely to be used to intimidate others than in self-defense
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11200101

>Are more likely to be used to intimidate intimates in the home than to prevent crime
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10619696

>Are not commonly used to shoot criminals in the commission of illegal acts
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10647578

>Are not used millions of times per year in self-defense
http://home.uchicago.edu/ludwigj/papers/JPAM_Cook_Ludwig_Hemenway_2007.pdf

So maybe it's time to come to to terms with the collective vigilante fetish in America and realize that firearms now account for as many deaths annually as motor vehicle accidents.

Their irresponsible use doesn't mean that people who use them responsibly also shouldn't have them.

Your analogies are also telling. Guns are not destructo-rays, especially pistols. Comparing their ownership to using a flamethrower in the forest shows how ignorant you are of firearms and their actual use. I carry a .45 in my pants literally everywhere I go except in the shower and while I sleep. And I have had plenty of opportunities to argue or start fights if I wanted to, but I'm not an immoral fuckwit with an inferority complex, so I de-escalate and act responsibly.

Do you not drink alcohol because some people drink like idiots and either poison themselves to death or get in a car and kill themselves or others? Do you not drive cars because some people use them like fuckwits and act completely irresponsibly? Do you deny yourself the right to own kitchen knives or baseball bats because people have used them irresponsibly in the past? Only those things are totally unimportant compared to you life or your family's life. If a mag full of .45 can flip the middle finger to someone trying to murder my wife or my sons then by damn I will fucking ventilate that son of a bitch.

I realize I hijacked the thread and I apologize for that, I won't post about it anymore. You are all just so ignorant of real life that I had to post one more time.

>So maybe it's time to come to to terms with the collective vigilante fetish in America and realize that firearms now account for as many deaths annually as motor vehicle accidents.

I don't know if you're fucking blind, or just pig ignorant, but if you could read your own damn chart you'd see that it was in fact guns that had a relatively stellar safety record compared to cars and we should all now be glad that cars are as safe as guns.

But that's all completely irrelevant as comparing motor vehicle "accidents" to intentional firearm "homicides" is the only dishonest way you can get such asinine figures, as the number of deaths from firearm "accidents" is only in the hundreds every year.

Sorry OP... I started this mess. Next time I post around slack-jawed pussies who can't defend themselves I will crop out any references to evil scary guns, especially black ones, to not hurt any feelings or trigger anyone.

If I were to buy a new multitool today though it would probably be a Wave. Hard to go wrong with a Wave. Signal seems alright but... no scissors. I love scissors. And I don't need another damn firestarter. Anyone on this board I'm sure has a fucking dresser drawer full of fuckin ferro rods and mag bars. I know I've got a lot.

Agree on the wave recommendation. It's probably the best general purpose multitool on the market today. Also agree that fire-starters are...unnecessary. I have a bunch, but at the end of the day, I'd just rather use my reliable mini bic that I keep in a gearward attachment on my keychain. Pic related. Also random Glock 19 for added fun.

>>

>triggered as fuck
>>
>>768026

I never used to think I would even use a multitool until I bought one to try it out, now it's indispensable to me.

I certainly never thought I'd need an awl, but I've used it as a reamer many times, even used it to create holes in various things. Occasionally I've had the ring pull on a can come off, and who keeps a can opener in the house any more? Well I definitely don't need a wire cutter, or at least I didn't until my neighbour asked me to snip off a bit of wire poking out from his chain-link fence. Then I filed the sharp edge off the bit that I cut.

You don't have to carry a whole toolbox for every conceivable situation but tools don't strictly apply to only one single situation, and some of them are the kind of tools where you'll never need them until you're in a situation where they're crucial.

If the only things you use are on the skeletool, then try carrying something else and you'll be surprised how often you use the other tools. You'll start finding lots of situations where you can use them, and won't want to go back.

Mines' the same, makes it a pain in the ass to work stuff like the serrated knife with gloves on but when you're really used to it that doesn't matter, they get a slight bit easier to deploy over time. Maybe some WD40 would help, considering the steel is stainless.
That's stuff like the screwdriver blades and can openers, but for the knife, saw and pliers its a beaut to use in darkness, with gloves and behind your back as long as you can tell which end has the logo stamped on it.

>America is really bad by these arbitrary standards that single out a specific inanimate object and defer to a country's completely irrelevant current socio-economic status-as if the country in question wasn't nearly a continent to itself with a population as racially and economically diverse to match.

This is hilarious. Of course if you use disingenuous terms like "gun crime" and "gun deaths" (which includes people taking their own lives) a country that is inundated in guns will look bad by those standards. By using terms like "gun deaths" you've already attempted to shift the goal posts about as far as they can go by being a cherry picking retard and obfuscating the reality of violent crimes and suicides committed without guns.

The argument boils down to "guns are bad", but again, if the availability of guns was a catalyst in total violent crimes committed or even suicides the United States would be a smouldering crater due to the fact that there are more guns here in more hands than anywhere else in the world by a spectacular margin. With a murder rate nestled firmly in the middle of all nations and a suicide rate well below dozens of your precious "first world nations" you can consider yourself rebuked.

It's proven that America's problem with violent crime doesn't stem from the availability of guns, it's due to the proliferation of blacks and hispanics whom are both over-represented in this relative to their population size both in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Actually you said effective. The victorinox saw is perfectly effective, it gets the job done.

Don't understand why your butt is bleeding over this one, anon.

I have the vic forester and the saw is amazing
(would even buy a full size one if victorinox sold one)

> but it's not effective.
for me its still way faster than walking to the shed to get the big saw

>a branch in the thickness of your wrist is about 5-10 seconds with a good saw and 2-3 seconds with a hatchet, i can usually break it in 1 sec if the wood is not green hard wood.
and its 20 seconds with the pocket saw
you can forget the hatchet and breaking it, during garden work if it has to look (and work) the part
>>
>>771679

Works perfectly fine mate, don't know what your problem is.

>>772013
>I can break soft deadwood

No shit. But for wood that needs sawing, the victorinox saws work really well. Don't know what you're doing wrong with them. Maybe you need to watch some youtube videos on how to saw lol

also have to add even with a full sized "pocket saw" that had about 10" blade to chew through the trunk of a pine tree it took me one minute, i would never even start with a 4" blade or smaller would have been a lot of fucking work.

Leatherman freestyle. Very simple, yet versatile. All I need are a set of decent pliers and a fair knife.

Here's mine. Leather man MUT is cool but I'd probably not buy it given a do-over. It's just useful for the kinds of things you'd rather a proper toolkit for, and not compact enough to carry easily (on pocket or belt). 7.5/10 - more if you wear molle often

The Helmsman on the other hand has been the best thing I ever had. It's a great daily companion and never wears out. The circular serations are unbelievably effective on rope aboard the boat - though a bit of a bitch to sharpen without a decent ceramic set. 10/10 as long as you're not in the anti-stainless brigade

The one on the left is homemade by the girlfriend and is fucking class for hikes - nice straight blade of thick INOX, and the opinels are more for dirty jobs and hobby stuff

Ebay is your friend when buying anything /out/ in the 26 counties. I asked in Great Outdoors about the MUT. The one they had was in a broken box, no bit kit and a nick on the blade. €200 if I recall. EBay? $160 shipped from the states.

Also, regarding Victorinox. When I was dumb enough to try use the Helmsman as a hammer, they repaired (replaced?) it on warranty for €8 postage
>>
>>773445
>MUT
i had it in my hand for like 5 seconds then i dropped it and wiped my hands in disgust.
i like leathermans but the mut feels like crap. too bulky but also flimsy feeling. looked good on paper i have to admit but irl i would rather go with the surge.
my problem with the surge it has a fairly weak jointed neck compared to the strength implied by the pliers. all big leathermans suffer from this.
>>
>>763831
Dammit OP this thread has given me the irresistible urge to get out all my Leatherman MTs and SAKS just to fondle and admire them
>>
>>773445
>>773470
Pretty sure the MUT was primarily aimed at people who own AR-15s
If your not an AR guy, there are probably way better models to match your lifestyle and intended uses of a MT.
I have the leatherman Charge. i think its similar in size to the MUT. The Charge feels strong and sturdy. no complaints with it after years of ownership and use.
>>
>>774297
Yeah it's not for people who need a saw either - I've gotten about a half a centimetre into this axe I'm rehafting. First time I've ever tried the saw and it's crap.

On that note, anyone got good ideas for a decent folding /out/ saw?

I had a Leatherman Super-Tool 300 and hated it. To use the knife i would have to open the tool up, click the blade into place, and close it up again. I ended up selling it on ebay.

If you're looking at Leatherman get the Wave/Surge instead of the "butterfly" designs, especially if you use your tool daily.

>>
>>765133
Id say its worse. The signal has a bunch of added on BS that any experienced outdoorsmen would have better alternatives of. The flint? The shitty LED light? The combo blade?

Leatherman has yet to put anything GOOD out for the last ~10 years. The Skeletool was probably their last "good" new design(and good as a urban EDC. Sure as hell isnt a hard use, or outdoorsman multitool)

My go to would be the Sog Powerlock if i want a heavy 4.5" tool, or a Leatherman Rebar(or blast) for a 4" tool.

Swisstool stuff is nicer, but its pricier and the extra quality is in more refined tools and better finish... Which isnt really as important for a /out/ tool.(Beautiful pieces of kit to EDC though. The Swisstool spirit is probably the sexiest multitool.)

Im wondering what the best multi-tool option would be for a poor / newfag to /out/ stuff. Not just camping, maybe edc or something. The most versatile. Thanks

Look for any full-size Leatherman that you can afford.

Otherwise there are some SOG multitools and that Gerber frame one. Anything cheaper than those will probably be a waste of money.

not the anon your talking to but. Yes, oil the shit out of it. and open and close each of the blades individually, over and over and over again, while continuing to oil them.
When I first bought my Leatherman Juice S2 it was like what you describe. I could barely pry open any of the screw driver tip blades and usually they all came out together.
It was built with super tight tolerances, which is good.
It took me several weeks of several times daily opening and closing each of the blades individually, while oiling the shit out of everything. I did this probably hundreds and hundreds of times.
Eventually things loosened up just enough to where I could open any of the blades easily by just lightly prying with a fingernail.
whole process took 2-3 weeks of fucking with it on a daily basis.
Now after many years and constant use, it is still one of my fave MTs and never let me down. truly a joy to own and use.

A method I used, to open and close the blades rapidly for hundreds of times in a row was this-

wrap the implement blade in a thin cloth or piece of leather for protection, then carefully clamp the blade into a vice. Do this in such a way that allows you to still replicate the motion of opening and closing the blade, as best you can, while the blade is clamped in the vice.
This makes it a lot easier to repeatedly perform the open/close action many times very quickly.
Repeat process for each blade until you notice an improvement
Do this for each blade you need to get broken in. it will get better, just takes a little time.
>>
I like the Gerber Multi-plier 600 because of the slide-out pliers, instead of the fold-out you find on most multi-tools. Just don't try to use the blade to pry things and you'll be alright.

victorinox.
leatherman is american cheap trash, that perfectly embodies the american seppo nature: looks cool, is worth shit.

now this is just wrong on so many levels.
comparable sized victorinox has better quality steel and a stronger build on all tools. pretty goddamn sturdy.
leathermans however are way better designed for useability.
>>
>>778396
of course it helps if you don't compare a tiny victorinox to the supertool 300, cause you know they are not the same category and supertool sucks ass in regards of ergos being a pretty crap tool (along with rebar) for leatherman standards.

surge and it's little brother the charge over the supertool and rebar erry time.

many people also swear by the wave, but i like big tools better.

my personal edc is a skeletool cx, while looks a little bit faggy, it has innacity essentials covered very ergonomic to carry in front pocket has a great sized 154cm steel blade while small and light overall and also has a decent plier for the size. don't recommend it for outdoor use tho. also the screwdrivers usable but a bit awkward.

It really only has 3 tools- Pliers + wire cutters, locking knife, and screwdriver with a couple bits.

Knife is #1, and screwdriver and pliers are probably tied. It's nice to have when I need a phillips screwdriver to change the batteries for something and can't be bothered to go to the garage for a 30 second job.

It may also have a bottle opener, but I use a Bic lighter for that task instead. I haven't encountered a situation yet in my daily tasks where I wish I had a 3" saw and multiple 2"-3" knife blades which come in one of the larger and heavier Leathermans.

>>
>>779280
No prob anon. To answer, no problem with the bit digging in when using the pliers. But so far I've only used it for quick jobs that don't require too much force. And using the bluntest side of the bit exposed does help.
Easiest option is to remove the bit and keep it in your pocket till the job's done
