Why does my little brother always do better than me? Wtf?

Also random ass dude comes to this spot nobody fishes at and of course starts fishing right next to us. Please people, go down the shoreline a little bit.

have an of you guys ever found a weight/lure that just casts perfectly on a rod? i was just dicking around with my memecaster and managed to throw a 1/3d oz jig and managed to throw it significantly further and more accurate than ive een able to throw anything else
>>

where did muh trip go
>>
>>760952
Mepps #4's seem to cast nice on the memecaster.

I really should start using those things more. I need to get the proper casting technique down instead of lobbing stuff or an awkard sidearm cast.

I taught my lil bro about Texas rigs today, I was proud. Gotta bring him to Bass Pro this weekend and make him buy me a new pack of #2 EWG hooks.

One was on a black wooly bugger one was on a bead head Prince nymph

no clue if it applies in canada put down south our creeks are loaded with chain pickerel and red fin pike. anything red works for them with red rooster tails being the best.

they hide out under lily pads or other cover close to the shore and hit the flashiest noisest lures on straight retrieves

Find a big Styrofoam float- baseball sized
Then tie a quick strike rig on #3 single strand wire
Catch a big sucker- 15-20 inches
Rig it up
Let it sit near where a big pike or musky should be for 15-20 minutes
Move to a New spot
Repeat as necessary

Just got back feom the lake. Turns out those Texas rigged spinners work fantastically. They never get hung up. I caught bass, crappie, and several pickerel on this one today.

Anyone up north know why the pickerel bite is so hot? Caught a dozen today, only one bass though...
>>
>>761041
ive easily caught 70 plus pickerel this year, some very well may be repeats but i dont know why, i figured it was jusat this new pond i was fishing but i also went and fished an oxbow in the river nearby and caught 10 pickerel in just a few hours

Just toss on some nightcrawlers on a bobber and hit some of the canals around dusk. You will probably get some largemouth. Or just Texas rig some of those Zoom worms and run them on the bottom.

Dude at Bass Pro at Dolphin Mall was telling me about good bass in Florida City canals. That would be fun, but you have to find the right spots in the canals otherwise they suck. I have better luck in little lakes. The canals are hard to fish unless you can find some good structure where it isn't overfished.

Pic related is from one of those Miramar lakes.
>>
>>761072
Dusk? I always thought early in the morning was best. Or does it depend on what you're looking for?
>>
>>761080
AFAIK fish feed the most around dawn and dusk. You can catch them anytime of day but you'll have better chances at those times.

Bass normally start feeding a bit more at dawn and dusk. And for some reason, I have better luck at dusk. Some days I will do OK from 6am-7am but most of my real nice bass have been like 30min before sunset.

Weather and pressure matters too. Sometimes I will kill it at noon if the atmospheric pressure is doin some shit. Still haven't quite figured it out.

Also, being FL, the wind off the ocean is a bit more calm at dawn and dusk which is nice.

>>761082
Words to live by. Fisherman should be up before the sun. Casting as it rises. Some species dead night is best though. Moonless and cloudy is my favorite for stripers.

I won't be fishing for four days. So much work, hopefully I coordinated these two work weeks with the arrival of striper.

You will. It's heating up, if you haven't already there is a two part series on YouTube about reading shorelines and ripa/waves. I'd find it for you but I'm camping and don't want to exert the effort.

Shouldn't be too hard to find.

what size spinner and worm are you using?
>>
>>761080
>Dusk? I always thought early in the morning was best. Or does it depend on what you're looking for?

IME it depends on fish species, what the body of water has for it to eat, and the time of year.

Bass can feed any time due to decent night vision and lateral lines, one of the best I've caught was speed trolling a giant plug at 2AM. But lakes with strong baitfish species usually are the ones that have morning/evening periods with intense bursts of feeding. Unlike bass baitfish can't really see chit in the dark, so lowlight makes them easier to hunt. Mornings/evenings especially because they're still congregated in small areas near their overnight hideouts in cover. In daylight they spread all over eating insects or roaming in groups after zooplankton and bass won't bother.

For a few weeks in early spring and late fall bass will binge feed all day and will follow baitfish in groups somewhat.

The morning/evening effect might not happen at all if there aren't healthy baitfish populations. It might revolve around insects in the day or terrestrials like frogs, mice, snakes.
>>
>>761214
Do you think that's something I'd have to pick up on through experience or are there places that I can go to read up on that behavior?

The answer is a solid, it depends....

I've had shit for luck during the morning. Haven't been out at 1st light yet though.
I've had great luck on the outgoing tide about an hour before complete low and late in the day, after 6PM.

Nothing remotely keeper yet.

Ultimate best bet, outgoing just as dawn breaks and be near the mouth of something, river, estuary, tidal marsh.

1/8thoz spinner and a senko cut in half to keep the profile of the bait a little smaller. Id imagine a 1/4oz spinner would work very well too.

>>761245

I have a fierce 3000 and battle 2 6000. As far as i can tell, the only difference is the drag, and sealed vs shielded bearings. They are both great reels though. The battle is only like 20 bucks more than the fierce if you want those features. Idk if they make a live liner version though.

>>
>>761717
Seconding cabellas they're reasonably priced and from my limited experience not too bad
Reasonably insulated too I spent quite a few days in and out of the ponds in below freezing weather with nothing but jeans underneath,
Not recommended but doable

If you want rubber boots I have good experience with lacrosse but you may not want to spend 100+ dollars for a pair of boots

If you're low on money and need some cheap boots find someone who had waiders that are shot and cut the boots off of them as long as they are junking the waiders anyways
Works half decent

Why are you asking me?

From what I hear, they are good for things like long lines with multiple hooks and other situations where you may not set the hook at the first sign of a bite. Something about the shape helping to hook fish without yanking on the line.

Google may be better. Or Yuro, he loves those things.

Really? I know LL Bean has a lifetime, didn't know Cabelas did.
My personal opinion is flyweight stocking foot and decent wading boots. Wading boots are more like normal shoes but with drain holes.
I've gone through like 5 pairs of hip boot waders in the last 5 years because:
I use them
Salt water
Clam digging
I treat them like shit, Never rinse them, leave them in truck bed or draped over deck railing.

I dont really target them, i usually catch a ton while targetting bass. I use 6# mono, and have only had 2 unexplained breakoffs out of 100s of pickerel.

They love spinners, texas rigged senkos, and some topwater even.

I like rolling a spinnerbait near the top of the water, and then stopping, letting it sink and starting back up. Ive seen several emerge from the depths and hit a falling spinnerbait like that a few times right in front of me.

Line, bobbers, split shots, hooks, and whatever bait.

You can make a little hobo fishing rig or get a cheap telescopic rod. But small hooks with anything on them will catch bluegill. Take off the bobber and get catfish.

smaller ( 3 inch) jerkbaits, dropshotted or twitched along the bottom work well, flashy shit works gud too

>>
>>762001
well i guess that gives me a reason to learn how to work jerks, spinners, and soft plastics.

i need to get gud but I normally just fish for panfish and catfish b/c it's fun and easy.
>>
>>761998
Nah, it's all urban pretty much. I can go 20min west and be at the edge of the Everglades but it's hard to fish from shore. But there are tons of canals and lakes and most of the lakes are in little industrial and commercial areas. Lots of it has to do with water management when it rains hard I think.
>>
>>762009
get a pack of swimmin fluke jrs (the 4 inch size) in white, ( what ive caught most of my pickerel on ) and some 1/0, 2/0 or 3/0 gamakatsu wide gap
texas rig it and put 1/8th oz weight right at the nose, try varried retrieves but i have found slow constant retrieve works well as long as you twitch it alot, and pause once or twice

Freshwater and I need to find some new lakes

I live in a fairly small town so the internet doesn't yield much and I'm new to the area so I don't really have any friends or associates to ask
>>
>>761998
Senpai I'm in the same situation, nothing very close to me but small ponds in city parks. No good if you want to catch decent sized bass. Those ponds, however, are good for foul hooking some kid that gets too close to your cast.
>>
>>762018
thanks. do you think white is a good color for clear but slightly tannin stained water? or muddy flowing rivers?
>>
>>762027
> Those ponds, however, are good for foul hooking some kid that gets too close to your cast.
preach, bud. Worst part is when the lakes you look up turn out to be private so you're trespassing, there's no parking, or it's a conservation lake that has no signs.
it's always one of them
>>
>>762031
The water I'm normally fishing is somewhat clear, though white is fairly visible even in muddy water

Be sure to tie a heavy (ish) leader
I have used both wire and 15 lb flouro
Flouro works well and gets more bites but wire works better for preventing bite offs

Something like 20 lb mono could work aswell but as with anything check your line and retie if needed
>>
>>762027
>>762039

holy fuck. is there anything more annoying than going fishing and having the fucking brady bunch roll up and start throwing sticks into the water, running around the bank, and looking through your tackle box while their parents just stand by and are like "so are there fish in here"

I had some luck using 20lb flouro with 20lb braided mainline. I had it on a baitcasting rod i was using to throw a spinnerbait.

They didnt seem to be shy of the flouro, and id imagine the abbrasion resistance would play a nice role.
I went to the beach today in search of striper. Tons of bait around, seagulls diving and all, but no signs of game fish. Me and a buddy fished from about 5-8pm, and didnt see anyone get anything.

A week or two of nice warm sun will kick things off nice for fluke season (may 17th). I should be living the dream by the end of may into june lol

Based WI.

What species do you guys usually target? I usually go for panfish, but since they're not near shore right now as it's been cold and I don't have a boat, what else could I target from shore that I could eat? I've been thinking about, as said above, pike, and maybe bass.

If you actually want to wade then you need a pair of breathable stockingfoot waders but if you just want to stay warm and dry and aren't planning on sweating much then neoprene bootfoot waders are your most durable and cheapest bet.

Oh, and buy Frogg Toggs instead of a house brand like Cabelas or Bass Pro.
>>
>>761792
Easy hookset (fish often hook themselves) when bait fishing, really mininal hook-shake rate, holds bait well (easy to bait the hook too)
Plus i think that when the hook scrapes the bottom when youre reeling it tl re-bait, it hooks the bottom way less.

>>762443
As someone who has personally handled 300000+ brown, rainbow, Brook, and occationally tiger trout

Owner brand half moon micro hook is basically essential. there are websites you can buy those from. For species in the three inch and above range I crimp a split shot smaller than a rice grain directly above the hook so that the strike registers on my float instantly and they don't swallow the whole hook. For really hook shy species and micros under 3" I tie a carolina rig with a rice-grain sized sliding sinker (make these by getting a little piece of lead, squeezing it into shape with pliers, and pressing a hole through with a needle. If depth or current force me to switch from micro weights to bigger weights I will use a dropshot or dropper loop rig so that the strike of a small fish registers directly into my line. Floats are carved from a piece of styrofoam with a lengthwise slit in them. They stay on the line by themselves if they are small enough. Catching shiners is a blast, if you downsize your gear enough (even little fly hooks will work), you'll get almost constant action.
>>
>>763089
i was thinking that a size 30 barbless might work. what line are you using? i assume the rod is just a thin bamboo branch
>>
>>763096
That would work. The line is 4lb mono, the leader came pre-tied with the hooks and it's 2lb I think. The rod is a solid strip of bamboo wood that has been carved and sanded into shape and then fire hardened to give more stiffness and sensitivity.

Fishing newbie here

Is it worth fishing in the afternoon? I'm fishing crappie and bass out of local stocked lakes. I know fish start biting in the evening too, but what time exactly? Like an hour before sunset? I work a late shift job so I'm usually sleeping during the early morning hours
>>
>>763664
Fish will bite at any time of day depending on the weather. The pressure seems to have quite a bit to do with it. But on a typical day it seems like the bass really start going around an hour or two before it is dark.

Trying to work up the motivation to get to a lake right now.
>>
>>763665
I forget to add to its a nice sunny day around 70 degrees, do fish like that weather?
>>
>>763591
>Two Rods
Who said anything about two? There's a double rod case and a single rod case in that photo. A 3wt, 5wt, and a 6wt. Not to mention all the rods in the closet.

Water temp matters more than air temp.

Sun dictates lure choice sometimes. You don't have to go quite as bright and flashy. I don't like to do flashy silver stuff with clear water and sun.

Go out and give it a shot. Sounds like the weather is perfect for being outside, even if the fish aren't biting you can still enjoy the sun. Hang out for a bit. My one lake, I have been there so many times in the afternoon where nothing is biting, and right on the clock 30min before sunset the bass start going crazy.

Goys- I hate Walmart but don't feel like driving far tonight. Will they have some decent Size 2 EWG/Worm hooks? Lil bro mentioned to snag a bunch of mine the other night so I could use a package.

>>

Hmm, I'll stop by. I'm sure they have some hooks and maybe I will grab a pack of 1/4oz bullet weights. If they have the chartruese lizards, I will be stoked.

Walmarts around here have a shitty selection though since a lot of it is saltwater. I might still take a drive to Dick's, I can't remember if the one nearby has those lizards. Bass Pro is only like 20min away if I were to go at 11am or on a weekend, but I'm not trying to get on I-95 at 5pm on a weekday. And Dick's isn't too far either but just no good way to get there without a thousand stoplights.

Headlamps are GOAT. I finally bought some $30 Princeton Tec one las fall and I have no clue how I survived so long without it. They just make everything so much easier compared to a flashlight or lantern.

This lake I'm at now has a bunch of snakeheads but it's so hard to catch them before scaring them away. I think I'm gonna run a lizard with no weight and drag it over some thick weeds.

first time poster, and I'm not sure this is the right place but anyways.

I need to patch some holes in the side of my pond/lake, and to do this I need to drop the water level several feet, so I can have a professional come in and seal them with concrete.

it's a fairly large, and deep in the middle, but I'm wondering what sort consequences it will have on the fish.

Currently the lake is stocked with Large and Small mouth, several species of sunfish, some generic catfish(I couldn't tell you to be honest since they're so rare to catch), and several Large Koi.

Throw a swivel on that bitch, either between your running line and leader, or clasp it right to the spoon

i was told to not use snap swivels because 'the fish won't go for it', how true even is this? like, it's a giant piece of shiny metal, why would the fish not go for it if there's just a tiny piece of metal at the end instead of line?

I generally tie a swivel between my leader and running line, then the leader directly to the spoon split ring. The swivel clasps work though, I've caught fish with both methods. If I know I'll be swapping spoons of lures etc on one rod I'll throw a swivel clasp on it

The one random person who I don't mind fishing nearby just showed up at this lake. Random black dude maybe like 45-50 years old, met him here before.

I wish I could take a pic of this guy setting the hook though. He has a baitcaster on some heavy Ugly Stik (the rod has to be 2/3" near the handle) and he sets the hook so far. Like imagine your hardest cast into the wind, but in reverse.

Told me about another good lake so I gotta check that out one day.

salt lures... $20-30 easily
>>
>>763912
some lures like mepps spinners don't like the swivel as the action changes. I think that may be more what was being said to you whether the person understood the reason or not.
I don't think it's an issue with spoons so much. I still palomar directly to lure on freshwater and swivel/tactical clip on salt for pretty much everything.

Inline spinners seem to be the one lure people reccommend using snap swivels with because muh line twist. I've never had a problem with the twist though.

They don't change the action of the lure (at least that I can see) but the one issue I run into with Mepps or other inlines and swivels is that sometimes the line likes to get wrapped around the blade on casts. Happens much more with swivels than with a straight line, but it is mostly only a problem when you are casting into the wind or really try and lob one.

>tfw the bass were biting better at 5pm than 7:30pm as the sun was setting

in a small pond(but deep) pond what is the best method for catching catfish.
I know there are a handful of decent sized, but you never see them on the surface.

I've never caught one from shore fishing, and only once got one with chicken liver.

Is this something where I just have to drop bait down to the deepest part and play the waiting game?

How can I be more proactive in my catfishing attempts, in a pond plagued by small bluegills and large mouths?

No chartruese Zoom lizards at Walmart. They didn't have any Zoom lizards there. And I wanted some 1/4oz bullet weights but they were out of those so I just grabbed a pack of 3/16 for 94¢ or some bullshit. Got my 2/0 wide gap worm hooks though.

Does anybody use the regular gap worm hooks? The 8pks of those cost as much as the 5pk wide gaps, but when weedless rigging stuff (the whole point of the bent shank on the hooks) the regular gap ones kinda suck at poking through.

Haitians are so ignorant and angry all the time. No idea why. Jamaicans are jolly but Haitians are unintelligent and suck most of the time.
Disclaimer: this is not predjudice, this is simply 3 years of living in South Florida.

>>764014
Some people use swivels to tie leaders on or whatever type of rigs they are running. And I use just the snaps a lot so I can swap out lures and hooks without having a big snap swivel on there when it's not needed.

Pic related is what I mean about the worm hooks. What is the point of the non wide gap ones?

>>764039
Shit, if you get it earlier on Monday, I'm off work so maybe we could hit up some afternoon Miramar lakes or Bass Pro if you need anything else.

I'm down in Miramar working most days. Today was one of the days I wish I had my fishing stuff with me in the truck since I was done with my route at like 12:30 and could've hung out at a lake for a couple hours before going back to Pompano. I was at a lake close to my house this afternoon though, I wouldn't expect you to drive all the way up there. But those Miramar lakes are pretty close to you I think.
>>
>>764050
I really don't mind driving far. I haven't seen much of anything outside of Miami, Orlando, and the Keys so I enjoy opportunities that let me see other places. Whenever I've placed an order and it says it'll arrive Monday it always comes on Tuesday so I most likely won't have a rod that day.
>>
>>764050
>What is the point of the non wide gap ones?
I think their smaller profile allows a smaller fish to take them. I catch warmouth all the time when I use the regular gaps, but almost never with wide gaps.
>>
>>764065
Makes sense. I was using one for largemouth, but it seems like when I catch bigger bass on them, it is barely hanging on to the corner of their lip. Plus the angle is all wrong for weedless rigging shit so when the hook pokes through, there is only like 1/4" between the worm and hook.

>>764056
I still want to get to some canals down south of Miami one of these weekends too. But those Miramar and Weston lakes are pretty good. Not to mention there are a ton of them so if one lake isn't giving me any luck, I just drive 5min and I'm at another lake.

The couple Pompano lakes have given me some good fish, can't get the snakeheads in Miramar. But some of my biggest bass have been in lakes off the Turnpike where it runs East-West between Miramar and Miami Gardens.

Either way, just let me know when you get the stuff. Maybe you will get lucky and have it by Monday afternoon. Otherwise I could head to Miramar or Weston on a weekday if I get off early. But Saturdays I like to head down that way and pond hop in the area.
>>
>>764056
And remember I have a bunch of stuff if you want to get out there over the weekend or something before you get the reel in.

I need to get back to Weston or something and finally get a damn peacock. I might have to resort to just buying some shiners if they won't hit any lures.
>>
It's been nearly 3 hours on the water. Every food of distance covered has been earned; sweat and blisters cover your hands and the skin on your face is beginning to protest the sun with a pink shade.

As you slowly drift through the mangroves in search of the most noble gamefish: Snook, you let yourself sink into the harsh serenity that is Florida's inshore water.

Off the bow off the kayak you spot a ripple, with a shadow moving under it. "That's him!", you say to yourself. Like a hunter with his rifle, you take aim with your fishing rod. As you preload the rod for a perfect cast, something terrible happens. A loud roar escapes from somewhere in the kayak just beneath you but just above your cushioned seat. The sound has nowhere to go; it bellows from below deck and reverberates across the mangrove, both above and below water.

Your fish is spooked, the day is ruined, all thanks to a cushionless fart-amplifying chamber of a kayak.
>>
>>764050
the nonwide gaps are like the only ones I use. Couldn't tell you exactly what it is but I think I catch more fish and have a better hookup rate with them vs the EWG when I'm just fishing a worm.
>>
>>764096
That's like trying to target snakeheads. I walk as quiet as I possibly can and far away from shore but they still go darting out of the weeds.

>No chartruese Zoom lizards at Walmart.

Those bastards.

>no zoom at all

>Does anybody use the regular gap worm hooks?

I use them to rig swimbaits. Usually I'll poke the eye through the top of the head instead of out the nose. Kinda like where the eye is on the storm/power baits. Also, if it's a sandy/gravel bottom where I won't get snagged I'll use those on other soft plastics because I feel like it's easier to hook the fish.

>>763898
Haha yeah whenever I use any scented bait that has the liquid stuff in it I always triple check to make sure they're closed and I usually put them in a speparate spot/bag.
>>
>>764142
They did have some Zoom. I grabbed a bag of the chartruese pepper curly tail worms. We'll see how they work. I have been hitting it with finesse worms in darker colors like Junebug and Sprayed Grass.
