#38- "Shooting Fish in a Barrel" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>755627

It's been a good Friday night so far, those little largemouth love the 6" Zoom worms. Shooting fish in a barrel this and that.

Since we like to be fair, this OP pic is dedicated to Skid.

Anon wants to post the striper maps to so here we go... Talk 'bout feesh.
>>
>>758094

Shit, that took a while to show up.

Get a 6,6" ugly stick
Get a plueger president spinning reel
Put on 8 lb monoline (I prefer spiderwire)
Get some Jig heads in 1/16th or 1/32 oz.
Get some Berkley powerbait curly tail grubs in 3" size. I have a lot of luck with natural chartreuse
Go to a river or lake.
Cast bait and retrieve.

Curl tail grubs mimic a lot of things a lot of fish eat. I have caught largemouth, smallies, bkluegill, trout and even hooked a muskie once all on curl tail grubs.

At least we got a couple ~2lb bass here. I know there's big ones in this lake but they must be deep since it is warmer.

What size hooks do you guys use for the 6" senko-style worms? I can't remember the size, but mine are fairly small. They poke through well but I'm afraid I will lose a big guy on them. And I don't want to go #3 or #4 if it means the underside picks up a ton of weeds.

>>758100
Start with live bait. Half the battle is finding the right spots. You can try to research online but it will take practice too. Once you git gud at setting hooks and shit, get down on some lures.

I will post my pasta in a second. Other anon above me seems close from reading a sentence or two.

>>758101
I made it after I replied to that post.

Best bet for fishing lakes and ponds, get yourself a medium weight rod and reel. 6'6" rod with a reel that holds ~150yds of 8lb or 10lb mono. Spool it up with decent 8lb monofilament line, most fishing outlets can do this for you. If you want to fish for more carp or catfish, maybe 10lb line. But 8lb is good for just about anything freshwater. You can still cast panfish lures with it and haul in bigger carp and bass.

Then grab assorted hooks, a couple bobbers, and some split shots. Pliers or a multitool are nice too. Best bet is just running nightcrawlers on a bobber and get comfortable with casting as well as seeing what you catch at these lakes. Then you can start with some lures. Ask what other people are using, or if you are catching crappie, largemouth, whatever, you could ask here for reccommendations or look elsewhere online. Watch youtube vids on how to fish the lures. Find out what works well at your lakes, and just keep going from there.

For a medium weight rod/reel combo (spinning reel of course), you can grab something for $40. But if you think you will really be into it or aren't too strapped for cash, you can buy a combo closer to $75 that will be much nicer and you won't want to replace after a couple months.

They do sell little starter kits with a couple hooks, weights, shitty bobbers, and a lure or two, but it isn't enough go last very long.

>>758124
Yeah that's larger than I'm doing. I think I should go 1 size up.

And after using them a bit, I'm not a huge fan of these chartruese tailed worms (or the lizards). On solid-colored worms, I land like 60%-70% of good bites from fish. On the chartruese tailed stuff, it is more like 25%.

It gets interest from the fish, and I think I have a good bite. So I set the hook and for 3 seconds I have the fish on. Then they just let go and when I get the bait in, the hook wasn't even pulled through. They are just holding onto the end.

I do like those Zoom "cotton candy" lizards though, the tail isn't so bright on those where the fish don't even touch the rest of the lure.

Skinner is an amazing fisherman, has stripers and flukes down to a science. If you put in the work, the knowledge will follow.

So i made a couple of these things today. Not sure im the first guy to think of this, but i call it the texas rigged spinner lol. Just buy some of the cheapest inlines you can find, these are southbend 1/8oz, cut the treble, add a splitring and an rwg, and add your favorite soft plastic. I recommend a senko cut in half, or a small curly tail. Cant wait to see if these work...lol
>>
>>758293
whoa. do it with a 2oz spinner with 9in rubber eels...

that could be the ticket to easy inshore striper

thanks for inspiration, great idea.

That would be a pretty expensive rig though no? Idk what the market on 2oz inlines are, plus hooks stout enough for stripes or pre rigged plastic eels. Im gonna try a bunch of oddball stuff this year though. I have a bunch of ideas for big fluke.

Go to Wal-Mart or Britain's equivalent
Find a Berkley big game rod and a big arse shakespeare reel
Then get a spool of 20 pound Berkley big game mono (I'm not sure the metric conversion)
Some 2 ounce sinkers
Some big swivels
Some plastic beads
Some #2 baitholder hooks
A can of sweet corn

I may be an Amerifag but a carp is a carp and that's gotten me some nice fish
It should be about 50usd for The combo, 8 usd for line, then 15-20 usd for the other crap
Look up a fish finder rig, tie it together, and have fun

Someone hit at 20" striper last night in Wells. Pretty sure it was a hold over, but it could be a scout for the horde.

I was thinking of going with the shimano sienna 4000 and a 6'6 hm ugly to learn how to fish with. Is that a decent choice? I'm planning on going after basic freshwater fish.
>>
>>758833
Yeah sounds good. 4000 is on the larger size, but you could still run some #10 mono. I would reccommend the next size smaller and like #8.
>>
>>758833
Also go M instead of MH. Unless you are going to be tossing a lot of heavy catfish rigs, the MH
>>
>>758850
I thought having a line with a higher capacity would be better, should I be using a lighter line?
>>
>>758857
The heavier the line, the harder it is to cast lures. Also if fish are picky about visibility, thicker line won't help.

If you are planning on catching bass and panfish, something like a 2500-3000 with 6lb-8lb mono on a M rod is the way to go. If you run a 4000 reel with 12lb line, you will barely be able to cast lures for smaller bass and crappie.
>>
>>758857
And if you really want some extra strength while still being able to cast lighter lures, there is always braid. you could run 15-20lb braid instead of 8lb mono and still have good line capacity and all that shit.
>>
>>758861
>mono

I've switched to fluorocarbon exclusively. Not sure what mono's use is anymore.
>>
>>758873

i missed a nice bass breaking me off. I got 10 lb mono to an 8 lb mono leader too, didnt think it would break on me like that.

The weather was really nice and the water was really calm compared to the past week.

>>
>>758875
>Really? I ran flouro once and it was way too stiff plus it made lures run really deep and messed with me.
>Idk why everybody doesn't run braid.

Water is super clear here and the fish are deep. I also get lures hung up a lot on rocks, so braid isn't ideal.

I didn't like casting of fluoro it at first either but there are a few brands making castable "soft" types. If you drop to 6-8lb test it casts as well as 8-10lb mono.
>>

>>758914
Ehh, could use a lil more. I should grab that Orra SX from Dick's. Only problem is it is the model with that real shallow spool but I'm sure I can order a normal spool or just run #10 braid.

>>758917
Yeah I see the use in it. I thought about spooling one reel for super clear water and deep lures. Maybe one day.

And I was running #4 flouro and it was still real stiff. Spooled up the reel like normal and first cast a shit ton just came flying off the spool and knotted up.

That's cool, it will be nice. I probably would've done 8lb but 10lb will help when you gotta rip through some weeds. What brand line did you get? Line isn't something you should cheap out on.

And the worms should be good, I have been doing so well with them. But you gotta grab some worm hooks and bullet weights to wacky rig them. It will be like $5 for that stuff, not a big deal.

On my way to Dick's to grab another pack or two of worms. I want to see how heavy the bullet weigjts get because I'm thinking some 1/2oz ones would be nice for windy days.

Got muh 1/2oz bullet weights. Hopefully those will hold the shit down when it's windy (which is basically everyday in FL).

I'm digging those Zoom shakey head worms. I think that's what draws the fish in, the head is in the mud and the tail is a few inches above moving around. Looks like a baitfish or worm or something digging for food and not paying attention.

Opinion, yet also true in almost all subjective areas.

And that braid can be pretty thin. When I spooled up coworker dude's Shimano (4000?) with the 20lb PowerPro, I filled like 1/4 of the spool with mono and even then the 150yds of braid just filled it up.

I need to add a little more to my one reel too after the monster got me tied up and I lost a bunch.

Yeah, that's why I got them. They had white with chartruese tails that looked good but not in the "Jr" size and I didn't want to go with the huge ones right now. I normally like the paddle tails instead of the split tails, but I think these will be good to run on a shaky head or just Texas rig them so their tail is popping up out of the mud n shit on the bottom.

I did have good luck with those Strike King Perfect Plastics in the baby bass color. Zoom does a really similar color so I might use them in the future.

Now I just I have to figure out how to get those Zoom baits I bought into my tackle bag. I need to get down on one of those worm binders or something. And need to stop buying shit. But with all the colors and styles, it's too easy to buy 4 or 5 bags at a time.

Not really sure. That was dead low tide. It's a pretty major river so I'm guessing it's fairly deep. Gonna take the yak over there. Debating putting the boat-boat in there but it's still never seen salt. Only $90 for a year ramp/parking sticker.

And I got some of those Biwaa plastics in an MTB box. They are different though, smaller crawdads but they seem nice.

Seems like they send out these soft plastics expecting people to buy more of them but the companies are really random outfits that you never see in stores (pic related). I guess you could order online if they were the best baits you ever used.

Ahh, that's all good.

And for the license, all you do is go to a bait shop or any sporting goods store (or even Walmart at the counter in the fishing section but fuck that place).

In FL, it's $17.50 I believe for freshwater and saltwater shorline fishing. Give em your driver's license or ID and it takes 5 minutes for them to type it all in and print it up. Good for a year.

Are you by the Bass Pro at Dolphin Mall? You gotta stop there and grab me some Blue Foxes if we go fishing. Otherwise we could both go there if you wanna grab some more shit. The Dania Bass Pro doesn't carry Blue Foxes while the Dolphin Mall one doesn't really have Mepps.

Hmm... I should stay away from Bass Pro. Tight on moneys right now so tryin to hold off on buying too much more fishing stuff for a little bit. Not really working well since I was at Dick's today.

If you want to get the fishing license, just go over there and grab it at the customer service counter. Beyond that, I think you should wait until you get your rod and all that before you go crazy with the lures. If we go fishing, I'll show you some shit and you can kinda decide what you like after using a few things.

I'll probably down in Miramar in the AM, I have some shit to do in the afternoon though. If you really want to get to Bass Pro earlier in the day and need help, I could stop by there as long as I'm already down that way and just have to refrain from buying stuff (maybe 2 Blue Foxes). I think it's only about 15min to Dolphin Mall from like I-75 and the Turnpike where I will be by.

Went out this morning but no striper magic like yesterday with the schoolies.

Reports:
>Connecticut Striper Report:
Larger stripers in the 30- to 36-inch range are moving into the tidal rivers and chasing herring

>Rhode Island Striper Report:
Stripers to 30 inches have spread out from the South County beaches to Narragansett Bay. Fish to 36 inches have been caught in the upper bay and in rivers around schools of bunker and around herring runs

>Cape Cod Striper Report:
Schoolies are abundant in the Buzzards Bay harbors and along the south side of the Cape and Martha’s Vineyard. Keeper-size bass to 30 inches are being caught near herring runs and in the Cape Cod Canal

>Massachusetts Striper Report:
The three bays of Plymouth, Duxbury and Kingston have schoolie stripers, and there have been reports of more 20- to 28-inch fish mixing in with the abundant 14-inchers. Boston Harbor has schoolies, and they have been reported as far north as Plum Island. It’s definietly an early start to the season

Weedless rigged. Use the EWG (offset worm) hooks. You can get the weighted hooks or run it Texas rigged with a bullet weight.

You could do a jighead and just run the hook through the top if you want. You would pretty much just want to swim it through open water with that although they don't catch weeds too bad.

They also have the hooks with the little corkscrew deals on them. I think I prefer the offset worm hooks though. The corkscrews seem to rip out too easily and the bait is done after you hit the first patch of weeds. With the offset hooks, the fluke should last through a couple of fish.

Drop literally any bait in the bottom and wait.
>>
>>760447
if you plan on releasing any catfish, bring a pair of snippers and remove the spikes from the fins first. This will help any future anglers and will also work towards breeding away the harmful spines.
>>
>>760540
>taking away a fishes defense mechanism because it's too hard to watch where your hands are
>>
>>760545
Oh please it is not a defense mechanism. All it does is injur anglers and other fish after the catfish is already eaten. My theory is this is a leftover from whatever dinosaur that the catfish evolved from.
>>
>>760548
It is a defense mechanism you fucking idiot. Even small ass Cory cats have these. If you're to stupid to not be able to avoid them then you shouldn't be fishing.
>>
>>760551
avoid them how? ive been stabbed probably over 50 times in my life with them. the smallest wiggle and you are impaled.

I forgot to mention, cut the whiskers off too. I've been stung countless times and I'm sick of it. You should be able to pick up a fish without being stabbed or stung.
>>
>>760532
Recommend a good binocular, telescope, or telephoto lens to see bikinis on distant boats?
>>
>>760540
Sounds like a pussy problem. Been stuck a few times and it isn't that bad. it's illegal to do so. This can eventually kill the fish from infection and you are taking away a defense mechanism. If you haven't learned to avoid them well you should throw out your poles and gear. You sound like you have been raised a pussy who wants everything his way.
>>

Uhh older/bigger fish have more mercury so dont eat local bass every day that's about it
>>
>>760587
concerns about mercury pollution in freshwater fish are super overblown this long since the clean water act passed. you can drink river water in most non-urban waterways without purification. mercury contamination is almost nil outside of areas with major industrial run off like the delaware

Buy a light 4 or 5 wt combo and then find a big field
Then get a spool of each; 15 10 6 4 and 2 pound test
Then tie your own rippers and leaders it's a lot cheaper
Learn to cast with no tippit then put one on go to some water with a fly and practice more
Your job isn't catch fish it's cast but you might catch a few
>>
>>760762
>>760747

thanks. the major appeal to me is more options on small creeks. I live in georgia and while we have a lot of ponds and lakes, there are thousands of unfished creeks that are just begging to be explored with ultralight setups. i've been working peachtree creek hard these last few summers with spinning gear but i'd love to try catching some stuff on the fly.

plus theres always the chance of hooking up with a chain pickerel when you fish creeks around here
>>
>>760768
If you're going to be mostly fishing small creeks mostly focus on the roll cast and over-line your rod to help the super short casts
Like if you have a 5 wt rod its meant to cast 30 feet of 5 weight line most efficiently which I don't know the actual weight on. It should be able to cast 45+ feet but it will be really pushing it
But if you're fishing tiny creeks it might be advantageous to run 6 wt on your 5 wt rod to help the rod load with shorter line
And If you're going to be fishing wide open areas and needing crazy long casts a 4wt line so you can get more line out before the rod is over loaded

In short
If you're only fishing tiny creeks consider buying a line weight up from what is written on the rod
So I'd say buy 5 wt rod and 6 wt line
I'd also recommend you buy weight foreward floating line
And buy wooly buggers- they're the most versatile fly
Buy both black and white in a few sizes from 10 to 4
That will set you up for panfish and smaller bass and that should be enough to handle pickerel
>>

>>
>>760798
thanks. i've got a spare reel lying around so i'll spool that up with 6wt. i'll work on casting into my pool when i go home to get it. the only issue i see is that most of the creeks aren't big enough to wade very far into without spooking the fish and the banks are always vegetated pretty heavily. I assume that i'll probably just wade a little in and cast upstream like i already do with spinners but to a more extreme degree.
