Let's talk about fishin'

+1 on the backpack idea like Mainebub said here >>748840. The actual fishing backpacks are sweet but get kinda pricey. You need to spend at least $50 to get a halfway decent ones and good ones are closer to $100.

Film canisters don't sound like a bad idea as long as you don't pop them open on accident. Maybe a pill bottle? But if you do a regular backpack, I still think a really small clear box with dividers for $3-$4 would be good to toss in there. Keep just your hooks and weights in there and you don't have to worry about them getting loose and tangling with lures.

never had that problem. I'm sure it could happen. I keep quite a few things in those canisters, they have never failed me.

what you said about hooks and other terminal tackle staying in their place is true, never really had an issue with any plastic plano style box where the hooks went everywhere. Just don't open it upside down.

Found the biggest school of juvenile fish I have seen yet. I'll upload the video soon.

wasn't targeting anything really, just cruising around the river watching the birds.

I've taken a liking to following the cormorants and watching them feed. Their catches have been getting bigger each time I go out.

I come across the schools of juvenile fish and attempt to get footage of them. It's hard because they scare extremely easily. Got my best footage yet today.

kind of just yakking around to watch the river in anticipation of striper.
>>
>>748870
Those cormorants, I get nervous when I see them getting near my lures. Those are the black birds that dive, right? I just don't want to reel in a damn bird.

I had a seagull take a dive at a popper a couple weeks ago too. I had to jerk it away right as it was diving for it so it missed.

What's the ETA on dem stripers? How long do they hang around?
>>
>>748876
they are smart as fuck. they won't touch your lure unlike pigeons.

if I see those fucking commies feeding I follow and cast to their vicinity; had much success with following them.
>>
>>748878
Yeah I figured birds are smarter than fish so it shouldn't be an issue. But then I had that seagull dive bomb my popper...
>>
>>748882
i meant to say seagulls instead of pigeons in my previous post.

I too have seen people have to take a sea gull off a popper.

fuck those stupid ass birds. It's funny sometimes you see the commies watching the seagulls trying to eat the small baitfish off the surface; like they are watching a bunch of bafoons screaming at each other diving at the surface haphazardly.

Cormorants are graceful, extremely talented predators

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-crested_cormorant

that is the species we have around here..
>>

Sure it's little stuff here and there but hopefully I trust we'll see some bigger guys and maybe a few monsters over the course of the next month (but that's being generous, I'm feeling 2 months to really get into the swing of things) - I hope to land a nice size pike, and a few great bass, that's my goal this season.

>>749035
It works way better than I expected. I've caught 13 largemouths on it so far and not one failed hookset or any sort of issues. I let the line go slack for a bit to see if any of them could shake it off like they do with storms but it works great. The main reason I bought it is for the steel leader though.

Catch more fish than any of them.

Sometimes I do that at my one spot where there is only 4' between the water and the fence. I cast left-handed a lot of times so I don't hook the fence.

Go back out there and fucking slay 'em, bring in more fish in a day than they've caught all month

Well fug.
Pay more attention next time.
Otherwise just go out there and fish.

One of my first trips this year, i was casting with a crosswind, and my new popper got blown into the huge pine tree right next to me. Had to call my mom to bring me my 13 foot surf rod to snag the hook of the lure and get it off of the tree.

Eh... Next time i went there i caught my first fish of the season so yea...

>>749460
I used to go walleye fishing on a river in IL a lot and we would always use the walleye rigs. The ones that have 3-4 hooks on them, a heavy weight at the bottom, and they often have the little beads and spinner blades on them. Run some minnows or shiners on the hook and toss it out there.

Otherwise diving cranks and spinners.

Okuma SST 7 ft 6 ultralight
Diawa legalis 2000
Spooled with yellow power pro 15 lbs(15 lb flouro leader)

Stren 4 lb mono
That's going to go on a spare spool I ordered for the legalis
Also more white flukes ( well pearl they were on sale )
Ultralight rippin rap

Some lizard/salamander baits ( they're more chunky so I think they would do well places that actually have lizards
And some stand up jig heads

The rod and reel cast a fucking mile without even trying with no weight on it
>>
>>749313
I didnt feel like walking several miles into headwind with light rain to get my surf rod and then go all the way back there with a chance of not finding the lure...

>>749324
Trust me mang, gonna have plenty of off days, but the good ones outweigh the bad, even if the good ones are rare.

>>749488
Went out on the water again today. First 2 casts knotted, the rest was an absolute dream. Still too afraid to cast with more than 60% power.
It seems like braid digs into itself when you reel it in and leave it for a day or two.

Also 2 pc rods are master race.
>Anyone got experience with Shimano AX Shad rods?
>>
>>749487
Oh ok. Not sure if we have the giant ones in the US. The bullseye ones are in South Florida and the northerns are in the Chesapeake Bay area in the Northeast.

>>749498
Are you on a baitcaster or spinning reel? I notice the braid will dig into itself a bit if I pull line out with the drag on the baitcasters, but never had an issue with spinning reels doing the same thing.

>>749493
Hmm, I think next light setup I do, I'm gonna grab a longer rod. 6'9" at least, probably 7'.

>>749486
I wanted to ask too, that lure, is that one of those Rapala rattlers? I have never had a ton of luck with Rat-L-Traps or anything similar except for those Rapalas. I almost grabbed a larger one at Gander Mtn over the weekend when I saw in in a clearance bin. But then it rang up as $8 and I had already spent around $100 on tackle that week so I put it back.
>>
>>749505
Spinning.
I dont into memecasters, literally noone uses them for sea here.
>>
>>749505
i really like this setup so far, its also an ultralight rippin rap
>>
>>749507
That's kinda odd. I've never had an issue like that on a spinning reel. How many reels do you have braid on? If more than one, is it all that Daiwa braid?

I'm thinking maybe it's just that line. Or if it's still real new, it could have a sticky coating that is catching it up. All braid is a little different, like how SpiderWire seems more smooth than Power Pro but also frays a little easier.

>>749510
Yee those Raps are goat. Their other ones that are more of a traditional rattler shape have never been as good to me.
>>
>>749517
Only this one reel.
Its the Daiwa. But i honestly think its the newness of it, and the "rigidity" of it.
As i said after a few casts and knots it cast anything between 40gr and 7gr.

Guess my goal for this season is to catch 1 redfish and 1 blue cat from this lake.
>>
>>749640
Or just switch to an all chartruese worm/lizard.

I'm running one of those shaky head jigs too with the offset hook. But two problems with them- it's windy and they are only 3/16oz or something because they are "finesse jigs" and the second is it seems like the hook doesn't pop through as easily on the fluke I'm running on it. Maybe it is too big or maybe the jighead vs a bullet weight that slides has something to do with it. So many good bites today but I haven't hooked shit.

And I cut the top off that watermelon and chartruese worm and all I got afterward was one bite that felt like a Mayan, not a bass. I think when I cut off the tail, it kept it from sticking up off the bottom.

I'm just gonna do those natural colors at this lake next time. I had a lot of luck with regular watermelon worms with no tail.

Is Malaysia anon still here?

What about other anon from the NE that posts the pic of him on a boat with the big Northern Snakehead?

If either of you guys are lurking, I'm curious as to whal lures you are using and where you are fishing for them.

All of my sneks have been on spinners, and the majority of them have been along this rocky shorline where I cast parallel to shore and run the spinners in maybe 3'-4' of water over some underwater grass.

I have a couple lakes where I see them lurking in/near thick cover but it's just too hard to run spinners through it and I never catch them on anything else. Any advice?

I still have never had any luck with frogs for bass or sneks. Topwater seemed like a really good idea but even when I toss them in areas that I have gotten snakeheads before, I don't get anything.

The topwater lures for bass kinda died out anyway since the weather is warming up. Those were doing great in January and February for the bass.

Some locals here rigged live frog and cast time like artificial lure, idk how they rig it though. Always lookout for their frys, cast onto it and the adult snek will go nuts.

http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/florida-fishing-guide/post/how-to-catch-the-bullseye-snakehead

He seems to like the frogs. But every single one had been on something with a spinner blade.

I'll keep a lookout for the fry. Say's they're orange. Best tip there is probably to fish smaller patches of weeds rather than big weed beds. I'm gonna try out a frog or some poppers more at this one lake where I know they have bigger sneks but I have only caught one.

The article is right about the info on fishing them lacking. They are still resigned to a fairly small area between like Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. It's strange. And that C-14 canal where they originated is a bitch to fish. I could actually see them in the weeds, but they would get spooked long before I got anywhere near them. Maybe I need to drop a frog in from way up the bank or try to get the wind at my back and toss them to the other side of the canal.

I felt kinda bad about this catch because he took it on the fall, and I was casting with a cross wind. So I had a slack line and didn't set the hook until he pretty much swallowed it. He swam away but he was bleeding pretty bad. I think I'm gonna switch over to braid on this reel, because I've been in a similar situation with my rod with braid and I still felt the bite.

Idk, the braid helps. And I normally just keep the line kinda tight and when I feel a nibble, I will give it some slack for ~2sec and then set the hoom. There's a good chance I will have a fish on after that. It makes it fun though.

>>749866
The wind was kinda strong today. I was using that lighter shaky head jig on the fluke today and I don't think it ever really sat on the bottom.
>>
>>749720
There's a guy on youtube, Captain Shane Procell who fishes down your way. He gets almost all of them on topwater frogs kind of like a zoom horny toad.
>>
>>749870
thanks for the tip, can't wait to give it a try.
>>
>>749864
My fav technique is as soon as I feel a bite that I think was a take and not just a nibble I'll bring the rod tip up to feel for the weight of the fish.

They never drop it, and sometimes nibble a little more, because to them its that prey trying to escape. Once I feel the weight, BAM solid hookset and you're usually in a fish.

>>749869
True, or wacky rig or whatever. Plenty of ways to fish a worm.

>>749870
Honestly I fucking hate casting into the wind. It like halves the sensitivity, even with braid. If possible I'm always fishing with the wind at my back.

Hood pond anon checking in. Pumpkinseed w/ Chartreuse tail is an old school color combo I've always liked using. Usually worms; either Mann's or Culprit.

Cold fronts really shut down the bite this past weekend and two weeks before out at Mallows Bay. Even the bait fishermen weren't raising any hell. I think my pops and I ended up doing better than anybody else out there but that isn't saying much. Also I haven't caught a single snakehead yet this year, but folks are catching them. I think they must be hiding way up the creeks where waters have warmed quicker promoting faster growth of vegetation. It hasn't helped that the only place they would be and that I've fished so far (Mallows) is only just now starting to see vegetation thickening up. I might try searching for them up the Mattawoman Creek this coming weekend.

The best bait has still been jig spinners. Before the grass gets out of control we're either targeting structure (walls, rubble, trees/bushes, shipwrecks, etc) or even throwing out in BFE because the bay is mostly a giant flat with lots of holes, hidden structure, and some depth changes here and there like where the creek channels run through. When the grass gets bad we throw to the edges and reel back, or parallel the grass patches when we can. Still not thick enough to justify using the frog setup, plus conditions just haven't seemed right for topwater yet.

I'm guessing where you're at the grass probably never really dies off which probably rules out spinners all year except for in larger/deeper waters. I'd say either hollow body frogs and tweak the hooks out a bit to improve the set, or those soft plastic solid body frogs/toads seem popular and effective from videos I've come across. I haven't tried the toads but I think they rig weedless with a typical EWG worm hook. If the grass isn't too close to the surface for treble hooks maybe try spooks, poppers or even wake-baits.

That frog reminds me, I want to get out and try more snek fishin. Those lures Malaysia anon had are trippy, it makes me think I should try some Heddon Torpedoes or Rapala Skitter Props. I have a nice Skitter Prop I need to get more use with but it is a big guy I grabbed thinking of large peacocks. Those fuckers might still hit it.

Eastern Colorado is pretty shitty but it's part of the great plains and shitty like Kansas, not arid desert and shitty like Nevada. The shitty desert part of Colorado is basically the front range south of Colorado Springs, most of the western slope (muh sagebrush sea) and the south-central (it's like fucking New Mexico jesus christ) and southeastern (basically Texas) regions.

But the parts of Colorado that aren't those parts are absolutely fantastic, or would be if they weren't so goddamn crowded now.
>>
>>750365
I have just driven through NE Colorado a handful of times going to Breckenridge and stuff. Quite different from Nebraska because at least that is mostly farms and people still live there. NE CO is straight nothing.

Safeway or somebody was actually recruiting drivers to come work in CO and I was thinking about it. I have some extended family and my dad lived out there for a minute before he died so I could've stayed with somebody while lookin for a place. It would be nice to be an hour away from the Rockies and just dip out there for a weekend.

I have never lived anywhere with real terrain and it is one of my favorite things. CO was my favorite place ever to vacation because there is so much /out/ shit to do.
>>
>>750367
Fuck off, we're full.
>>
>>750368
They're gonna keep coming.

I'm not sure if I would want to do it after the rec weed though, seems like you guys must be getting a lot of shitters. And I kinda watched Breckenridge turning from a younger town where you don't have to spend $2k/night on a villa into another Aspen.

I also despise the snow and cold so I'm set in Florida. Cost of living will probably get kinda high in Colorado eventually, i will go to Tennessee or Northern Georgia if I want to get a lil terrain without the snow. It's still nothing compared to the Rockies, but I could probably buy a couple acres for dirt cheap 30min outside a larger city. That's prime area if I wanted to drive OTR too since lots of freight runs through the area.

Well I went out early morning last Saturday on opening day for freshwater lake fishing.

I caught and landed 3 rainbow trout, and had two (would have made 5) throw their hooks.

I used a very successful spoon with a trebel hook on it. My first catch was over a foot long. Pics to come later when i get them from my friend's camera.

I guess I did not set the hook as well for those last 2. When you guys have a lot of line out in the water, how do you set the hook effectively. Yanking up did not quite hit the ticket.
>>
>>750411
also the same spoon that was giving me success got cut from my line (along with a splitshot and swivel) because some fucking moron on his boat wasnt paying attention and drifted over my line.

I did not even get a fucking apology. Fuck people like that. I could tell it was not intentional but that doesnt take the burn away. That was a good lure.

Otherwise you could just use mono and try to keep the line tighter. A fast action rod too. If you do any of these, you want to make sure the fish really gets the lure in its mouth though. Otherwise you will just barely hook it on the lip and they can shake it out.

>Yanking up
>Treble hooks

Fuck's sake, man. First of all, you should switch to a very sharp SINGLE hook on your spoons and for fishing anything resembling a baitfish you should set horizontally and very gently because when big fish eat smaller fish they hit them and then immediately turn away. If you set with an upwards motion you're just going to yank the lure out of the fish's mouth and possibly injure it but if you angle your rod horizontally and make a sweeping rearwards motion the hook will end up right in the corner of the mouth.

There's also no need for braid when fishing for trout. At all.

They should sell weedless inlines...

I'm thinking about putting a regular J hook on a couple of inlines, that should cut down on the amount of weeds they pick up. Otherwise maybe some worm hooks so I can weedless rig small curly tail grubs or worms on there.

What do you guys think? Will the regular hook cut through the weeds well enough? Will I still be able to set the hook properly if I do a smaller worm hook and weedless rig 2"-3" grubs or minnows?

He's right, you don't need braid for trout.

Nah, I know. I was mostly saying if he wants to be able to set the line quicker and have less stretch he could do it. But probably not the best for trout if that is his main targer.

Idk, I do really well with hooking up on regular poppers. Those weedless frogs are tougher though. Shoulda let the fish dive with it a lil more.

I also think I got a hit from a snek. Didn't seen like a bass jump. But it was the same exact time somebody was yelling from across the lake and the fish hit the lure as I was looking at the person yelling. Missed my second-long window.

I was mainly trying for sneks and it was frustrating because they spook too easily. I had a big one get scared by my line hitting a lilly and moving it while I was walking the dog.

yea it does suck when condition is shitty. I should try to find a new place to fish like freshwater places if the condition is poor for surf fishing instead of trying to bear it or not going out at all. I live in OC though and don't really know any good stream/river/or lake nearby. A lot of freshwater places get fucked over by the recent years of drought. I probably will have to go out of my comfort zone and try out those small city park lake. I have little info on fishing in those places. I want to fish for bass but not sure if bass are even in them. They are stocked with trout and catfishes though so I can go for those as well. Maybe i'll even make that 1 hour + drive to go to a larger fishing lake one day as well.

Got any tips for surf fishing other than learning how to read the surf and knowing when fish are running?

The couple times I've been surf fishing I caught nothing
>>
>>750732
Ooh a bass pro shop extreme? Very cool.
Anything from 20-50 should work well.
>>
>>750790
I just started fishing around the beginning of the year and found success this month. I believe that the most important thing is reading the surf and finding your spot. Find a structure where there are fishes that you can easily can reach with your cast. Some beaches do produce better than others, but most beaches should have some structures that work. Therefore, pack light so you can move around a lot and find the fish. Depend on the conditions, the fish can move around to different spot in the same general area. I have a favorite stretch of beach that I like cast then move until I start getting bite. Most species in socal don't really require heavy gear so that's my strategy.

After that hurdle, it get easier. A lot of shit works, from bait to lure depend on species and conditions. Sand crab is an extremely good free bait that catch almost all species, but aren't available half of the time. Ghost shrimps and live sandworms are also okay bait you can purchase off a bait shop. Cut bait generally will mostly get you sharks or rays. Live baitfish will catch you anything that can eat the fish, but they are a pain in the ass to acquire and keep a alive so I don't like to depend on them. I like to use lures because it's more fun and I can choose to target any species I want in any condition with lure selection. Gulp sandworm will work. Any minnow shape lures will work. You just have to find what you like to use and know how to work the lure.
>>
>>750797
Okay I'm on the east coast and was fishing with a 9' heavy rod with 20 lb mono and attached a leader with two hooks (using cut bait, a mullet I caught in a cast net) a bobber, and a pyramid sinker
I was just casting out and then waiting

I didn't know how to read the surf then but now I know to look for sandbars and holes
>>
>>750800
Well, I use the surf to find sandbar and holes so that's what I meant. If you find a good hole then there will be fishes there. I haven't tried big rigging with a long surf rod yet so I can't really tell you anything about it. East Coast is a different game compared to socal and there are bigger species that you can get near from inshore in East Coast. Lure fishing probably involves more heavy plugs and poppers. Maybe if you get decent amount of live small bait fish, you can try rigging the whole thing through the nose alive and cast it out to see what you can get.

They are 9foot, 3 meters.
Spinning. Mostly soft baits and wobblers/poppers.
their casting weights are 15-50grams and 15-45grams so they are basically almost same.
The hexana is 10 bucks cheaper than the salina. Or the other way round, idunno. 60 and 70 bucks a pop.

Should mention we are fishing for seabass, leerfish, bluefish, etc. In their normal sizes, but i expect the rods to be able to hold up as long as the reel holds up in terms of fish size.

Holy shit, I'm like shaking right now. At one of my regular lakes with a Blue Fox #3 on, something big grabs it and snags it onto something like 3 seconds later.

Fast forward 10min, I'm in the same spot tossing a lil chartruese curly tail deal with 2 tails on a Texas rig. Get a bite, set hook, this thing immediately pulls 30yds of #15 braid. This gon be good.jpeg. Fight with this fucker for about 60 seconds. Pulls out 10yds, I pull back 2yds. Finally he snags me on something again.

Not sure what it was, maybe a snek or a giant bass. But I have never had anything even close to that big on my line. It had to be 10lbs+.
>>
>>751122
you may be surprised i had a 3.5 lb bass rip line from my reel yesterday thought it was much larger
>>
>>751122
#30 Med-Hvy comin in hot. I doubt I'll get another bite like that, but it would be sweet to get a 12lb Snek and my Blue Fox back.

The rod with the #15 on, that drag is set so it takes a 4lb+ bass to really pull it at all. And whatever was on that line had zero problem just running it out.

A week or two ago, dude here was telling me about the 47", 14lb snakehead he got here and I'm thinking it was something like that.
>>
>>751127
do you usually add a lure to the football head or leave it as is?
>>
yo goys, i was thinking about line for my baitcaster

I was planning to use 12-15lbs mono/copoly for my med cranking baitcaster but for jigs and worming on my m/h rod should I be fine with copoly? if so what line strength, I was thinkin around 17-20 (20 is max rated for mono on the rod)

would that be acceptable?

also rod is rated for 1/4oz-1oz lures but I will not be going past 1/2 oz

should I go down in test or go with what I mentioned, also will be going to new ponds to spot whats around my vicinity (all public areas because everyone else is pissy pond/lake owners that dont want you on their property)
>>
>>751159
I normally run a trailer like a crawdad on there. But I have been having much better luck just doing Texas rigs instead of jigs and trailers.

>>751170
Copoly? What is that? Fireline type stuff or braid?
>>
>>751170
>>751176
Either way, I would look at the diameter of the line and match that with the reel. If you were gonna run 12-15lb mono, you could easily do 30-40lb braid if you felt it was needed. That doesn't have much to do with the rod. The lure weight applies much more when it comes to the rod because it needs to be sturdy enough to huck heavier lures if you are tryin to do that.

But if you do some braid instead of mono, I made the mistake of doing 40lb Power Pro on a baitcaster because it is the same diameter as 10-12lb mono. But it was overkill so I went with 20-30lb and it is much easier to cast the same lures while still being stronger and thinner than the mono.

>>751248
So what is copoly again?

Andy why don't you want to tie leaders to braid? Leaders aren't necessary most of the time, but sometimes I tie on a flourocarbon leader if the water is really, really clear and the fish are being picky.

20lb or 30lb braid is probably your best bet. If you do 12lb-15lb mono on the baitcaster, you will struggle to cast anything <1/2oz. I can cast 1/4oz lures a decent distance on the 20lb braid.

Reminds me, I need to add more line to this reel after that whale snagged me. I'm thinking I will probably take it all off, put on a backing, and then put it back on. That way I have a knot then ~120yds of line instead of a knot with 20yds after it.
