I just looked at about 100 different kettles after seeing this thread and stumbled across some like pic related and thought it might had one of those caps and that little spike was for retaining the cap then. Maybe it's possible to get aftermarket caps like those, idk.

I believe the space created by the spike is for the tea ball hook (Pic related). Before invention of commercial tea bags, people used tea balls which would hold the loose tea leaves. They are still considered more traditional. By hooking the tea ball chain at the front, the tea ball was kept from banging around, because the front is now the bottom as the tea is poured.

first time posting in /out/ I've got a few questions
1. do you guys have any kind of pastebin? how do I start to learn more about doing /out/ stuff?
2. I've been raised in a very outdoor environment, my brothers and I spent most summers and falls playing out in the woods or exploring or whatever, and lots of camping as I was growing up, so I'm not completely green, but I'm trying to do more now that I'm on my own and can elect to do so, what do i need to start?
3. Where should I start with outdoors stuff? state parks, national forests? does it depend?

I should probably explain more. My hammock (original Hennesy) has attached ropes that I tie to the nylon webbing i wrap around the trees (I try not to use long runs of webbing because see below). As a rule I like polyester marine ropes for low stretch and easy knot tying, but I've also used cheap yellow polypropylene for longer runs & cheapo parachute hammocks, it's slippery and harder to tie knots in or untie them once they set, but it's strong and doesn't stretch much.

Nylon rope is pretty stretchy so your hammock will sag more, and it loses strength when wet. Paracord is nylon.

Also depending on who you ask, the safe working load for rope is 1/5 to 1/10 of breaking strength. For 550 paracord that's 55 to 110 pounds and you're probably putting more stress than that on your hammock lines.

I think there used to be an insert that kept the handle in upright position. The spike is to keep this insert over the hinge. I don't know what it looks like but this is the only logical explanation.

If you go up North enough (and never speak German so a local might hear - the old-timers still aren't keen on krauts), you can poach OK, even with guns if you move camp often enough. Unlicensed fishing is more likely to get you fined, actually - riverside camps are easier to spot by rangers moving by the waterways.

Honestly though, bears aren't nearly as bothersome as rodents. I've heard of people having to bat them away from there tent because they were trying to chew there way in. Since they are so dumb, they don't just give up till you get out of your tent and go Godzilla on their ass.

Animals aren't a concern though. Even Bears are scared of humans. A friend of mine slept a whole night with a skunk once. He was freaked out at first but he just kept sleeping and it didn't bother him. He was sleeping in a shelter on the AT and it curled up on the wall opposite of him.

Who made those cairns on Bear Island in Lamoka Lake, NY? I was there yesterday and there was two of them, resisted the urge to kick them over, made my own (although not as tall or interesting), then swung on the rope swing for a while and kayaked away.

I prefer leather tarps. More weight yes, but they are durable and when taken care of, very quiet in the wind.

Leather is expensive but going for quality synthetics is not any cheaper. I paid £200 for my first tarp and had to replace it right after my first /out/ing. £500 -£800 is where it's at.

Probably a daft question, but what's the rules regarding walking on quarry roads? Pic related, was basically the only way to get back to the road without backtracking through miles of fields. Kept the dog on the leash, but I'm just wondering if it's permitted to follow them if you're careful not to wander under a lorry's wheels. I live in san deigo, born and raised

i have been /out/ before but for the most part in the desert and im fucking sick of it. I don't like the countryside around here at all.

Where is the best semi-Nearby place to go /out/ that meets the following?

-I want to be alone and don't want to see many people if any at all ( no designated campsites)

-I want to spend most my time fishing (and eat the fish)

-Lots of trees and fish holding water to hike to

-it would be nice to have a fire but i realize that is a lot to ask in this fucking place so that's not a must

I am willing to drive as far as the sierras since they seem like a good candidate but i don't know any specifics about the areas around them

Scrape the fat off.

Extract Tannin's from Oak bark/Gulls/Acorns
- Boil water with finely chopped/grinded oak bark finer the better
- Let it simmer [if you can burn yourself, you burn the skin]

Throw your hide in the tannin water and let it sit for 24/48 hours or even longer. I like closing off the containers if possible and keeping them out of the sun light after boiling.
-A skin is done tanning when tannins have penetrated all of it’s fibers. Checking by snipping off a sample from a thick edge is the easiest way to see this process, you should see a color diffrence all the way through.
- For thicker skins such as cow, elk, moose. making too strong of a tea can ‘shock’ the hide, meaning the exterior of the hide tans too fully too fast, blocking tannins from getting to the interior fibers of the skin.

Softening your leather.
First off, this can be accomplished by taking out the hide from your tannin and washing it off well in a steam/creek.
hang it up to let it dry, as soon as it starts looking a little dry start appling the oil.
-some good oils to use are lard, bear grease, seal oil, olive oil any liquid and semi-soild oils work best.
- If your gonna "wear" the skins then the oil only should be applied to the outside [grain side] not the side that would come in conntact with your skin.
-keep it hung some place to dry, you're gonna have to strech and oil it many times so be prepaired.
-More oil applied the more "water proof" it will be.

before I start my own thread I thought I'd put it here in an attempt to not.. well the reason why this thread is here.
I got this plant about 6 months ago, no idea what it is. I'm a total plant noob. It was doing okay but I had it up against a window that got a lot of sunlight (with a drape pulled 24/7). Moved it across the room when I started seeing some burn on the leaves.
Then it just kind of started doing pic related and I moved it a bit closer to indirect sun. Still doing it.
Is it just a kind of plant that sheds a lot? Should I clip the dead ends of the leaves? Can you tell me what it is so I can look it up online?

I should of added that anything with "tannins" work. I've found acorn tanning to actually be the best for squirrel and rabbit tanning. but acrons come only at the end of the year. so its not exactly an option year round.

also.. No salt required.. srsly I don't know why people salt shit if you don't need too, Its good if you can't make a solution for a few days. if you got time to that day, then do it... no need in pointlessly salting.

Considering there is one spike on each side I think it makes the most sense that they are supposed to be bent in enough to block the handle.

They are probably bent back out so the handle can fold down for easier storage.

I'm beginning to doubt my own theory about inserts but here it is:

A) One spike = you can rest the handle against it.
B) Two different spikes on the same end = Handle stays upright position but can be moved a little to the other side to help filling the kettle.
C) A different spike on each end = Same as B, but you can have A if you remove one insert.

I have a gerber multitool (from the Bear Grylls line). It was given to me by my sister, who knows that I'm into 'that camping stuff'. I've been using it for couple years now.

Best you can do is make sure your fly is set up correctly and not preventing moisture from escaping. AFAIK there is no magic way to prevent all condensation.

im ready to buy a cheap ass paddle, and my local hardware store has a rounded and a square paddle double sided paddle.

From a quick google search, single blade paddles are a no no for kayaking, but I cant find whether I should have a square or round paddle.

How much water do i need a day while hiking in southern California? I feel like a gallon a day would be enough to drink and have some leftover to cook with.

Not sure if this is the right board, but what's the smallest cooler that can fit a 6-pack of beer bottles? All the coolers I've seen are either too short for the bottles to remain upright or way too big.
