This shits been a wake up call. What steps can I take to make my situations better in the event of a catastrophic hurricane in south FL? What equipment should I get?

Get a boat

There is thousands of people called the cajun navy, driving directly into that shithole for fun all because they have a boat.

Get a boat.
>>
>>1090835
If you live really close to the water have a place to go.

If not, make sure there are not any trees ready to fall on your house.
If you can, re-tar any loose shingles to avoid the blue tarp shit that happens when insurance cant help fix your roof for 6 months.

get wood for windows if you dont have shutters. Ironically, the cheap pressed chunk wood is better. its made with wood chips and glue and the glue is semi-elastic so it wont snap if hit. Its also a super material (glue with a bonding solid) so its generally really strong. try to get as close to an inch thick on the wood as you can. Have a 6 inch overlap on the outside of the windows and use a hammer drill to put in concrete screws.

dont do the dumb duck tape window bullshit. its a meme and doesnt work or do anything but leave nasty shit on your window.

Get a sawyer mini in case the water situation goes down hill. FEMA will possibly be there after to help but its honestly crazy hard to get through a city after all that debris is thrown about.
Have food for at LEAST 2 weeks. and try to get water for that too. The water will probably work afterwards but it wont be potable so it would need to be boiled.
Get a bunch of coleman propane tanks from walmart. they are about the size of a two leader, and then get the camp stove attachment. Fill any grill propane tanks you have as well.

If you have a generator make sure its bolted down or it will get stolen.

This isnt by any means everything you need to do, but as a rule of thumb just overprepare for it.

oh, and get a gun... seriously... people tried breaking into our house twice the 2 weeks the power was out.

t. went through francis, jeanne, etc...

Probably a home far away is the best thing. No gadget or equipment other than a boat will help.
Also: Florida is so flat that something like a tsunami will just wipe it all clean.

>Sawyer mini

I have a sawyer and I love it, but it's filtration and in a post hurricane situation you need purification. The big issue is going to be possible septic/sewage contamination of drinking water and a camping filter won't handle that.

UV purifiers are an option, but need batteries or recharging and frankly are sometimes just unreliable. Chemical purifiers are a better option, but the best option is to boil. So make sure you've got a portable stove and plenty of fuel for it.
>>
The key is to be as armed and ready as possible. I recommend owning at least two hand guns, a shot gun, and some kind of semi-automatic rifle or submachine gun, with at least 1000 rounds of ammo for each.

Next you'll need to armor, any plate carrier will do, but make sure you put a "molon labe" patch, or at least an american flag on it, it helps show the looters that you're not to be messed with. On top of that, it doesn't hurt to protect your head; usually a baseball cap with a velcro american flag on the front will do just fine. While acquiring all of this equipment, do your best to grow a goatee.

t. I post in bug out bag threads all the time, I know what I'm talking about.

I seriously don't even know if Americans are just retarded or if it's just the result of circunstancies.
And I'm not saying mine or other countries would fare better.
>>
>>1091535
1. Many of us are aware of how ridiculous our military budget is.
2. I dispute that our country "turns to a major shithole every time a significant natural disaster occurs".
You see the worst of the worst in the media. We are generally a very self-sufficient and resilient people, and there are hordes of volunteers and tons of money pouring in to help those who can't help themselves.

Just get the fuck out.

I'm on an Island on the SE coast. We had a nasty tropical storm (formerly hurricane?) come up the west side of Florida and hit us in the back door last year. I decided then I could weather a Cat 1 'cane; anything more and I'm out.

Well then, not long after, along come hurricane Matthew barreling right straight towards us at Cat 2. I noped the fuck out and drove 700 miles to visit family. Did some real damage but not too bad considering what could have been. I owe my condo association $3k by Oct 1st for the clean up. Fuck.

I know, right! Just fell a sapling and trim it to length with your ax, ya turkey.
>>
>>1091547
This is kinda true.

In the past 25+ years, the worst death toll from an earthquake in the US was 60 people in Southern California. And that's a very densely populated area.

An earthquake hit Haiti and 316,000 people died.

Niggers in Houston need shelter because they sold their SNAP card to the crack dealer at the beginning of the month and didn't have any gov'tbux left over to buy bottled water.

Also if you haven't gone outside your whole life, then you probably didn't realize that nigs don't plan for anything and have no thoughts beyond immediate gratification. Therefore they don't prepare for stuff like hurricanes. So whenever a bad storm hits a major US metropolis with a large minority population, CNN will just go film there and it looks like chaos because those people are incapable of common sense and planning.

bump for Hurricane Irma
I live right in the Splash Zone on both the US and Euro models

what I want to know is, I've heard of filling your bathtub with water. Of course you clean it first, but how long does the water keep?
What if your drain isn't 100% water-tight? How do I keep it from all draining out?

Are the mini propane stoves really worth it?

You are really better off getting something that has a seal. Don't let that stop you from filling everything you have though!

When the power is out in my area, which is often, I have jugs of water for stuff like flushing the toilet. That's the type of water I'd use from a tub or trash can, not for potable stuff. I have soda bottles, milk jugs, juice bottles, etc that I've cleaned, bleached, and rinsed with boiled water. I store boiled potable water in those.

Get some iodine tabs for water treatment and learn how to use them. I also have a wood-fired water distiller I can use if things get really hairy.

Mom pointed out that a storm had crossed Mexico and is now hanging out over the gulf. If it were to form into a vortex would we still call it a hurricane or a typhoon?
>>
>>1094637

It'd be a hurricane. Pretty sure only asian countries call them typhoons
>>
>>1094623
Yeah, that's not such a good idea considering >>1094259

I think for once I'll have to prepare for hurricane like weather... in Appalachia.
>>
>>1094644
You only need to be xx miles inland for it to not matter. They lose strength very quickly. Tennessee would just be a bit wet, a bit wind blown, and have power outages at the very most. Appalachia would just be in "stay inside with hot coco and a book" mode.
>>
>>1094637
>>1094640
Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon; we just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, the term “hurricane” is used. The same type of disturbance in the Northwest Pacific is called a “typhoon” and “cyclones” occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Fucking hell, I read that the warm waters around Florida may boost Irma to a higher category, once it has lost energy trashing land (likely Florida after Bahamas and Northern Cuba).

This can mean a double-tap with the second phase probably landing around Louisiana. I guess Texas is safe no matter what.

But sheesh, Louisiana. Katrina wasn't that long ago and now a potential for a new one cat 5.

100% accurate. The media fishes for the worst of the worst situations and sob stories to put on the air because they want it to look as dramatic as possible for people to be glued tot he screen and giving ratings. They don't have a moral compass when it comes to compass because at the end of the day, they answer to their boss who answers to the corporations.

However, while it's true that they make things look worse than it might be, they do also push more people to provide aid to relief funds for natural disasters and whatnot.

That's a drop in the bucket for insurance companies. Maybe $20 billion payout compared to their market cap of over $ 1 trillion.

However, they will use this as a reason to raise rates so their profits will acktually go up, according to crooks like Warren buffet who made his money in insurance

It's not that I can't fix it, it's because the trailer itself isn't a boat trailer it's just a utility trailer that I've retrofitted with bunks, it wasn't designed for saltwater, originally when I finished building the boat I was just going to use it once to bring it to the water and then I had a boat trailer lined up to transfer it to but a tree fell on the boat trailer and totaled the frame so I've just planed on using the other trailer until it rusts out.

Although hey, with the way Irma seems to be going I might just have to go to NC/SC.
