Reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>caudata.org for newts, salamanders and lots more amphibians
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

>Jump Start (formerly Hydrofarm) thermostat is a good basic and inexpensive thermostat for regulating ceramic heat emitters and under tank heaters (Amazon sells it)
>if you want something more advanced for temperature control, look at Herpstat products

I agree, rat snakes are very underrated. They do have a small but vocal section of the herp keeping community devoted to their awesomeness. Very inquisitive snakes with big personality. Some beginner keepers find them to be a little too much in that regard, strong feeding response and strong defensive response when they're unaccustomed to new people/environment, but they tame down nicely. I worked with one once, I believe it was a radiated rat snake, that was forcefully insistent on climbing up shirt sleeves and zooming around your torso underneath. He would get all huffy if you tried to remove him from under there before he was ready to leave.
>>
>>2459415
tubs are fine for most species as long as they have enough room for the snake to fully stretch out and keep a proper heat gradient and humidity level
They largely dont give a fuck if all of those needs are met along with food and water.
Id suggest everyone who doesnt have a large scale collection like that to give your snakes a nice landscape though since a good terrarium can really add to the beauty of the animal and wont look tacky like a row of tubs
I still use ziplock tubs for growouts though and move them up once they get some size

Crappy pic, but here's my Russain Tort

I've been wanting to give him some plants, but he eats succulents too quickly and I'm not sure how aloe would take to his substrate. Is spineless opuntia cactus a good idea? I'd prefer something low maintenance.
>>
>>2459663

Nah. There are basically three tiers of thermometers:

Bad
>analog stick on thermometers

Good
>any digital thermometer, bonus points if it has a probe so you don't have to put the entire device in the tank

Most accurate
>ir temperature readers. Gives you an accurate reading of any surface you point it at in a fraction of a second.
>>
>>2459780
I don't know about the plant question but that is a handsome tort you have there. Love to see tortoises with their shells in good shape and no pyramiding. Well done.
>>
>>2459861
>>2459663
Can confirm that temp. guns are awesome. Even cheap ones work well.
>>
anyone know where i can get "green tree skinks"
otherwise known as "emerald tree skinks"

really want to get a pair
>>
>>2459663
/herp/ isn't that elitist, but I've heard many say that the big brand names like zoomed and exo-terra digital thermometers are kind of crappy. Not vert accurate, give different readings right next to each other and are often very buggy
Temp guns are good for basking spots and surfaces but not as much ambient temperatures, but the cheap ones will be a few degrees off
Though you can point it at different parts of the tank to get a good idea of the ambient temperature
Elitists will tell you to use a decent temp gun to know the basking spot temperature as accurately as possible
>>
>>2460121
This is the Canadian amazon but I've used this and cheaper ones from the same brand it works quite well
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B001BO8CUE?tag=vig07-20
AcuRite is a good band
If you want to get really elitist with it then something from here should be good
https://www.yourbestdigs.com/reviews/best-indoor-outdoor-thermometer/
I have some zoomed ones and they gave me some weird way too hot readings sometimes, so I don't know about them
I dont always use one thermometer for every single tank, but I just check them often, and I have different parts of the house so I have a few different ones
>>
>>2459861
Is it the same with domes and CHE?
>>
>>2459865
Thanks! I've made sure he's had plenty of calcium, UVB, and a good varied diet since day one.
I wish I saw more tortoise keepers in these threads. I always love hearing other people's methods/suggestions.
>>
>>2460142

Yeah brand isn't important for those either. Dome fixtures you just want to make sure the socket is ceramic instead of plastic. CHEs are all the same regardless of brand.
>>
>>2460040

That will depend on country. Check kingsnake/faunaclassifieds. If you have a reptile specific shop in your country, look them up online and send them an email. If the shop is good they should be able to find you a pair. It'll likely be quite expensive though. Those aren't amongst your standard common pet herps so pricing from a reputable source will be probably more than you're looking to pay. No harm in asking around though.

Im about to upgrade my setup for my two BPs
Planning to get 2 T3s from AP they're 36x24
But before I fuck everything up, is this long enough? They're both males, but their 20 gallons are getting kinda small

Also what thermostat would you recommend? Is it better to have them both on one, or just have two seperate thermostats?
>>
>>2459629
Gorgeous snake you've got there, friend. In jelly.
>>
>>2460669

Yes that is a fine size for adult male BPs.

Herpstat makes thermostats that can control multiple heating elements independently if you wish. They are fairly expensive though.

anyone have experience with underground reptiles? or LLLreptiles? Or snakes at sunset even?
>>

>>
>>2461291

Underground - bad
LLL - not quite as bad but still not good
Sunset - i've never heard of this outfit

For the most part, you want to look for breeders that specialize in only a few species rather than everything under the sun as Underground and LLL do.

My sweet not-so-little girl came out to explore the walls and steal my warmth! Shes's tamed so well; she only barks at my phone if its near her or at the spray bottle if she's woken up by me misting her. The other day she laid down and fell asleep on me while I was petting her and I may have cried.
>>
>>2461291
What species are you looking For? Underground and LLL are shit, I made the mistake of buying from LLL once and got a juvenile snake with a severe case of mites who died within a month. Don't do it. Buy from a reputable breeder who will ship to you
>>
>>2461721
My tokay is two years old this month and finally starting to calm down as well. It really is so rewarding.
>>
So I just saw this on PlebTube... What do you guys think? I keep mine in a pretty simple set up, feed him varied diet of greens collard/kale/squash and discoid roaches. With some cage furniture and hammocks... This seems involved, which is fine, but is it a good idea?

https://youtu.be/fBQduMAZKPY
>>
>>2461993
Yes, bioactive can work just fine for desert species. It's a little easier to establish the ecosystem with a tropical tank but, as you see in the video a desert style can be done as well taking in to account drainage and so on to maintain correct low humidity for your dragon. Ordinarily you would use clay pellets for bottom substrate layer. looks like this guy has figured a substrate mix that doesn't require that.

Working on homemade tanks right now. Today was devoted to cutting acrylic panels for the front doors. I can't decide whether I hate cutting glass or acrylic more. Each is annoying in its own way. Acrylic is a lot easier to drill holes in to for mounting hinges so it winds up being the quicker option.

Does anyone have any good plans for a DIY melamine enclosure that wouldn't cost a ton to make?
>>
>>2462889
i make all of my bigger tanks from wood

You could also use melamine coated chipwood/flakewood or whatever the hell this is called in english if you want, it´s really easy

But you need two glass sliding doors for the front, these glass panels are the most expensive paro of the whole terrarium (depending on which kinda wood you use)

Can post pic tomoorow if you want

So I got a hognose lost in my car. How do I get him out?

I was driving him home, and my car went into limp mode for having low coolant (thanks Ford), so I had to walk to a gas station. When I got back, I saw him under the seats, and I tried to grab him, but he had a good grip of the seat hinges. As he slipped through, he gave me one last head poke from under the upholstery. A look that seemed to state "haha, look how stupid I am, now I'll be stuck in here forever"

So I've tried putting my frogs in a box in the backseat to see if he'd try to hunt them, as yesterday was feeding day. No dice.

Does anyone have any experience or advice here?
>>
>>2463462
Around early evening take a hot water bottle out to the car and put it near where you last saw snek. Sit and wait.
>>
>>2463467
>early evening
Hognoses are diurnal, should I put it out in the early morning?
>>
>>2463474
Whenever your snek is most active, yeah. If snake does not come out promptly, but a rumpled up towel on the hot water bottle. Hopefully snake will curl up under there and you may retrieve at leisure.

going to a reptile expo in a month

their is only one breeder of leachinaus that are going to be there, some old couple, ive never heard of them, but they are known to frequent the show where i live, and their prices for leachie babies are like, $775 and up.

that sounds a little ridiculous, ive heard leachianus hatchlings go for around $400 and up at most shows.

should i not bother? or is it possible to haggle at shows

hello. I'm purchasing some whites treefrogs next month, and I want to set up their habitat right now. what would be good plants for them. I dont want to accidently poison them and their quite big and like to climb, so sturdy while still small enough to fit in a 50 gal tank woukd be best.

Philodendrons and bromeliads are the go-to easy to grow and sturdy plants for terrariums. Josh's Frogs has an article on several frog safe choices along with basic description of their light requirements and suitability:

http://www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/2012/01/terrarium-plants-101/
>>
>>2464159
A 50 gal tank would be excellent. WTFs like to jump so it's good for them to have some length as well and most 50 galls are quite high anyways so I wouldn't even put it vertical so the frog can jump far

Ok, wtf...

A friend of mine told me about a guy she knows, who is giving his ball python away. I asked for details, etc... (not important)

What I found out:
It's a two year old female, and on the pics I noticed she looks really thin..
Anyway, after requesting more Info, I found out that the Ball Python weighs 86grams!!
She is also not much biggger than a hatchling!

God damnit, I got so fucking pissed..
How the fuck does something like this happen? I've never seen anything like this, honestly, I'm sickened!

even my males usually weigh about 1000g at 2 years old. So what the hell did this guy do to this poor girl? Any ideas?

Is there any solution to this that isn't sand/grout? The only spaces that COULD be a problem are in the middle so I could just cover them with furnishings (or another big tile piece to elevate some of the ground)
I also don't plan to feed in cage so I'd imagine besides looking bad the gaps could prove to catch toenails/claws
>>
>>2467136

Unfortunately no, I converted that tank to bio active.
>>
>>2467118
>18x18x18 really not going to work for a leopard gecko?

No. Take it back. That's an arboreal tank. Not beig enough floor dimension and the height is wasted. You want a 20g long.
>>
>>2467136

Using sand to fill gaps between tiles is quite alright. The whole no sand for leos thing is about using a 100% sand substrate, which is bad for their joints in addition to the impaction risk. A small amount of sand confined to space between tiles is no problem (use regular play sand and preferably wash it first).
>>
>>2467137

Other options; you could jam some cypress mulch in, or coco fiber, or excavator clay. Or run a bead of silicone (allow two weeks to off-gas after application before putting gecko in).
>>
>>2467162
Actually it's for a beardie, I think I'll be able to move it around so all the gaps are on the ends, then cover that with branches/rocks or something. Don't worry I'm sure this general will here of the results

give me a reason
>>
>>2467184

It's not feasible in a home setup with tanks. A multi-species environment can be done safely (relatively) but it requires a very large setup more along the lines of something a zoo would do. For instance my local zoo has a fruit bat/tortoise room- kinda weird combo but it seems to work as the bats are always up at the top and the tortoises are of course always ground bound.

Anyway, it's hard and not worth it. Just do separate tanks for each species.
>>
>>2467178

Oh, okay. On second thought, I think excavator clay met be the best way to go about this. It sets in to a fairly hard substance typically used for creating landscape variation in arid tanks. I use it in my pictus gecko tank to create a little hill in the middle that acts as a boundary between the warm side (tile) and the cool/moist side (coco husk and sphagnum moss). It's not loose like sand after it sets.

So I'm getting my enclosure ready for my first bearded dragon soon and I had a few concerns with humidity. The temps are fine. During the day the basking spot is around 100F and cool side around 80F. Humidity during the day is mid to low 30's but at night it fluctuates up to about 50%. Will this level of humidity fluctuation at night do any harm or is it acceptable?

>>
>>2467311
30-40% is fine. 50% is a bit high but not necessarily a problem if it's only at night.

Usual ways to decrease humidity levels are:
>more ventilation
>run a small fan in the room
>smaller water dish placed on the cool side away from the basking lamp
>nuclear option is a dedicated dehumidifier for the room

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Found this dead snake under a log, not sure why it died, but it looks fine enough from my view.
It has a white underbelly and dark brown/black scales on top with a strip of bronze-y scales along its side. Probably about a metre long.

Not sure. I've never actually touched a mouse in my life but they are so similar to rats it would probably still bother me.

I posted about this awhile back but I have the same problem again.
My Ball Python is hold up in the hollow of this resin hide and she's been in there for a while. Last time I posted an anon said it was hiding there because she was shedding, and they were right. It seems likely that she is in there to shed again but it's also been quite some time, going on 2 weeks now. She is eating, just not leaving the hollow at all, at least while I'm awake.
If I need to, how would I go about getting her out of there without scaring her? Food did not work.
Also once she is out should I seal that hollow up?
thanks in advance for any advice
>>
>>2467337
I might try that, I'd like to avoid cutting the tile because I don't have much of it (its left over from previous projects) the clay looks to be about the same color as the smaller tiles so hopefully it won't look to bad

thank you. also I've read that the distance between the lizard and the light/uvb should be about 8 inches; does that mean 8 inches from the actual light bulb or from the end of the light dome?

Those measurements go from the bulb, i believe.
>>
>>2467551

Your snake is most likely making trips outside that hide late at night when all is dark. Hanging around in hides all the time is normal BP behaviour. No need to change anything.

I know that, the problem is where she is hiding I can't pick her up or even see her. I need to be able to she her so I can know she's healthy. right now she could have scale rot and I wouldn't even know.
It's not like she doesn't have hides, the thing she's in is a hide when it's not upside-down

So I'm at a loss of what to do for my leopard gecko. She's had some sort of infection in her mouth 3 times prior and now we are on number 4. She's only 1.5 years old. First time I treated it at home (I had access to vet supplies at discount working for a clinic), Second time she saw a reptile vet and was treated with antibiotic shots. Third time she was seen by the same reptile vet and given another kind of antibiotic. Now, months later, I'm seeing the very gradual crust again and I'm flat broke. I got really sick myself and just went through surgery, and I'm not able to afford another visit and round of antibiotics. I'd give her to someone who can give her the care she needs but I frankly have little hope she would get the same effort or quality of care from many others, especially on short notice. My other gecko had never had a problem and he's from a breeder, this one was my first and from petsmart. Never again.

>the live in desperate 20 gallons on tile
>80 on cool side 93 on warm side
>humid hide
>fed every 3 days with calcium or vitamin dusted bugs on rotation

Should I put her down now while she's healthy and happy before she suffers? Sell things and try one last rep vet visit?

Garters can, but even they shouldn't be. Several species are known cannibals, even ones not known for being cannibals could at any point in time end up cannibalizing. Food fights are common, as garters are ravenous little shits even when fed into obesity.

Any advice on building a 6ft snake enclosure? Or more specifically what material to use for the floor of the enclosure without melting it with a heatpad. I plan to make it out of wood except for the bottom.
I can build a box with sliding doors just fine but I've always used ceramic heatlamps so I'm a little paranoid about fucking something up. Obviously I wouldn't put my snake in there until I know it's safe but I'm not well versed on what melts and what doesn't.

Most of the DIY posts I've seen has them on linoleum and use adhesives like this guy.
http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/general-enclosure-discussion/84968-diy-wood-cage-build-guide.html

Is it safe or should I shoot for something else? I'd like something smooth and easy to clean so pissshit/spilled water doesn't seep in everywhere but will also heat up enough. I could just layer that, though.
>>
>>2468502
not really, but not because of the reasons >>2468644 mentioned. impaction is usually a bigger concern when it comes to sand. the problems of impaction aren't really related to the ingesting of substrate so much as the ingestion of indigestible substrate. this sort of substrate, like aspen, is easily digestible.
that being said, there was a lot of substrate on that mouse. i blame the snake for that, because it bit the the pinkie at a bad angle and had to roll it around a bit. normally there is very little substrate on the pinkies i feed my snake. stupid snake

Why don't you want to use wood on the bottom?
For example when people build big cages for monitor lizards the make frames with 2x4 and put plywood on it. After its finished they paint it with epoxy residue because of humidity. We are talking 90% humidity without issues
>>
>>2467128
Hey retard, it's designed to have gaps for grouting. maybe you should have just bought one size tile. What a fucking idiot.
>>
>>2469514

Two with the odd dimensions of the floor grout space would not have really mattered

>>
>>2469304
A UTH doesn't get hot enough to melt linoleum/vinyl. That's no problem. Alternately you could install a radiant heat panel. They're expensive but last a long time.

As for epoxy resin, it works well but is quite expensive in the quantity you need for a large snake terrarium.

Speaking of diy, i'm just finishing up a wood tank for crested geckos. Two lessons learned: 1. I will never again try to do the exo terra style double door with a latch in the middle. Fucking pain in the ass to get that secure when using acrylic instead of glass. 2. 0.177" thick acrylic flexes too much, use 0.25" minimum. I fixed the flex issue with some additional door locks and support in the middle... more work that could have been avoided.

Need some turt advice
I've been keeping these two babies in this single tank basically sincethey hatched, and have increased the water depth on a bi weekly basis. I'm now able to have both my filters submerged, and they've finally gotten to where they dont eat the plants trying to grow in the substrate, so on paper my filtration is doing great right now
And yet the water remains consistently this green murky color. What the hell is this? The turtles dont seem to really care about it and I havent had any signs of sickness since it started, maybe a week, week and a half ago? I want it fixed asap though. What should I do?
>>
>>2469304
A UTH isn't going to be enough for a 6' enclosure, I'd advise a heat panel or CHE. I have two 6' enclosures with a heat pad and CHEs (they're 3' tall so they need all the heating I can provide during the winter), and the sliding glass doors don't affect anything as far as heating is concerned - except too much escapes during the winter so I have to either heat the room or cover the doors.

Panels will provide belly heat and ambient, so they are the superior heating method, I'd advise that over a heat pad any day in appropriate set ups.
>>
>>2469865
Heat PANEL and CHEs. The CHEs provide the cool end temps during the winter, while the panels provide the hot side temps throughout the year, I shut the CHEs off during the summer. Both running at the same time are barely enough during the winter without a very powerful space heater (the panels are 120 watts and the CHEs are 100 watts).

So last month I moved my Ball Python from TN to CO. I thought she took the move well. I set her up in her tank but now something weird is happening. While before she would stay in her warm hide now she stays far away from it. I know I need to get her a new tank I'll move her from a 20 gallon to a 40 gallon In the next month. But now she sleeps on the cold side of the tank and whenever I'm in the room she is more "active" than she's ever been before. She also has an incredibly strong feed response. Last week I fed her medium sized mice rather than large mice, because I fucked up. Now I've gotten her the large mice and she ate it very well, but afterwards she has stayed in her feed position. She has been in this position for a long time, anytime I come into my room she's like that. I don't know what's wrong with her or if I'm just being paranoid. But now she's almost constantly in her "S" shape ready to strike, and even if I lift up the top of the cage to handle her she still acts like she'll strike. When I fed her the mouse the other day her response was so strong she got a few inches out of her tank and then struck at me instead of the mouse. I am worried that something is wrong, should I take her to a vet?

The shitty tetra whisper has been running since I got em. I find ts a great cheapo above water one when they need shallow water, and now I have it working in conjunction with a fluval nano that I got maybe 4 weeks ago, and added a carbon filter to about 2 weeks ago
The tanks currently around 15-20 gallons so both filters working together should be more than enough, although I plan on swapping the tetra out for a u3 or something soon and keeping the tetra for another baby tank again
>>
>>2469997

3-ish inches of depth. Mix two parts potting soil to one part regular play sand. Mix should be dry. Monitor humidity to make sure you're still in correct beardie range.

Recommend you use a plastic container to hold the soil mix and just put that directly in the tank. It saves some cleanup work.
>>
>>2469879
Most likely just stressed. If she's eating and active, temp/humidity are where they should be, you're fine. Don't do any handling until she chills out some. This may take a few weeks.
>>
>>2470063
Sounds like it's still might not enough as both filters are still pretty shitty (turtles need x2-x3 filtration with x3 being more ideal. So you're gonna need like +40 gallons worth of filter power)
I'd say also test the water to rule out if it's shit build up or incomplete cycling.

Also carbon media is generally only good if you really need to remove chemicals from the water, otherwise once it pulls enough contaminants from the water, it will eventually leech all that stuff back into it so most tanks once established generally never need carbon media.

Newb here with snek behavior questions. I have a lot of homework to do if i ever want to get a snek, but am curious.

Are the python-type sneks even remotely affectionate? For example, would it slither around the couch while I watch TV with it, or would it hole up under the couch and I have to dig it out?
>>
No. Reptiles in general aren't going to show any hint of affection. Least of all snakes. Some snakes are more likely to sit where you put them or stay near by due to your warmth. But they don't want to cuddle.
>>
>>2470688
No, snakes aren't capable of bonding, and as such have no use of affection. Depending on the individual, the ball python is likely to just try to find a place to hide, yes. Some will sit there and periscope (lift their heads like this anon's bp >>2470629 ), and if they're comfortable enough they may go to sleep in the open. But, they generally won't seek you out unless you're the closest hiding place or warm spot, and only if they trust you enough.
>>
>>2470683

As far as vitamin supplements are concerned, yes. You do not need to use any other supplements. Bearded dragons of course require a varied assortment of veg. Both should be fed gutloaded insects.
>>
>>2470688
Snakes don't have the part of the brain that makes animals socialize and reptiles don't produce seratonin, so it will never bond to anything.
The closest thing is that it can learn to not see you as a potential threat, and as a warm thing to hang out on occasionally.

Mine (>>2470629) is calm/"affectionate" in that she'll sit on me and doesn't see me as a threat anymore. Also she knows I make the rodents appear somehow so she likes that.

I've had super affectionate animals before (bunnies) and if you get a reptile you gotta be okay that it's not the same as a dog/cat/rabbit that will be happy to see you. But for me I work a lot and leave for over 24 on the regular so a pet that can take care of itself for the most part was ideal, and I've always liked amphibians, fish and reptiles my whole life.

tegus, some species of skink and monitor show hints of affection, and can associate you with safety and comfort.

>>
>>2470738
>>2470748
Just like how the turtle I had would bump against her tank every time someone would walk into the room, not because she wanted attention but she knew it was a source of food. A food/heat source is all they will ever see you as. Not that it's a bad thing however, heat/food is a reptile's "favorite" thing.
>>
>>2470829
Thats a tough thing for a lot of people to swallow.
I think it's fine for people to bond with their pets though, since they actually are mammals. They just need to know it's a one sided relationship.
>>
The fact that they don't feel affection makes them so much cooler
I mean I don't have affection for my male friends, that would be fucking gay, but they are still my friends
Reptiles are extremely intelligent, far more complex than people know and they can be friends with people and communicate with them

My carpet python I have to actively hold though because he wants to zip up and down exploring and getting into everything from my shirt to ontop of my PC

How often do I feed a 7ft redtail? He ate a large thawed rat the other day but since he actually swallowed it he has been more active than usual. He responds to movement near his cage quickly and it looks like he is looking for more food. If I open his cage, he gets into striking position. Usually he is fine with a large rat and slinks away in his hide. He's always been kind of a cunt but lately he is very ravenous.

His shedding has been perfect and has been defecating just fine. He has been eating a large rat every two weeks but for the past three weeks he has been so active I'm worried it's not enough for him.

Googling it reveals little other than hatchling feedings and the occasional post about how their redtail doesn't eat for weeks.

Pls Halp.
I have a baby hognose is so uninterested in eating. I've had him for about 3 weeks and tried 10 pinkies in that time. After an initial couple days of hiding, he came out to start exploring.

These days he roams around his cage just about everyday, sniffing around and doing a very convincing impression of hunting. But when a pinky is introduced, he either couldn't care less or, if it's tuna scented, hiss at it for a little while and then go about his day. I got him from a breeder who assured me that he ate at least 3 frozen thawed pinkies so I have no clue what's going wrong. He doesn't even really seem thinner and he's still active and happy seeming so I guess I don't need to worry just yet...
>>
>>2472329
What's the temp? I recently got a hatching myself and so far he has been great at feeding. He is hissy at first too.
>>
>>2472331
At first he had an UTH with a thermometer to keep it from getting scalding along with a heat lamp. It was around 95-98 on the warm side and 76-77 on the cooler side. I switched last week to a full spectrum bulb which doesn't put out as much heat but gives off that delicious UVA/B and it's dropped to about 90 on the warm side and 73-74 (room temp) on the cool side. He's also soaked in his water dish a couple of times but his eyes aren't even a little bit cloudy so it doesn't seem like he's about to shed.
>>
>>2472329
>tuna scented
why? they aren't piscivores and they've certainly never had tuna
toads or frogs are what you want, its what they eat in the wild
>>
>>2472329
>>2472427
your other problem is trying too often
if he doesn't eat you just wait until the next week. attempting to feed it so often is only going to stress it out and make it worse

get a scale and weigh him everytime you try to feed him and he refuses, if he loses too much weight, vet intervention is going to be required
>>
>>2459333
My baby gargoyle doesn't eat Pangea or repashy unless I hand feed it (from what I can tell, because she doesn't shit very often unless I hand fed her recently), she will eat a dubia or two once in a while if I leave them a bowl over night though
Either way she isn't eating enough
Maybe it's because her tub is really big (it's like 30'' long, 20'' high, and 18'' wide)
Sometimes I put multiple flavours of Pangea and repashy in different bowls around the cage but that doesn't really work either because she usually hangs out high up and I only have one feeding ledge
That's a waste of food anyways
I heard that putting geckos in small cages is a great way to get them to gain weight because the food is pretty much right next to them at all times
What's the smallest cage I could put a 3 inch gargoyle in?
>>
>>2472660
But mind you, she doesn't look skinny or underweight at all, she looks like basically any other typical baby gargoyle gecko
She's just slow growing but not really losing weight
I'd take a recent picture but I don't want to bother her

5. I WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE/SELL/POSSESS A VENOMOUS EXOTIC SNAKE. DO I NEED A PERMIT TO POSSESS SUCH AN ANIMAL?
PA Fish and Boat Commission regulations only pertain to native species of PA. In other words, our regulations do not cover any species not found in PA. Therefore, you would not need a permit from our agency. However, you may want to contact you local municipal government to see if they have any ordinances in effect that regulate the possession of “dangerous animals” or exotic pets. Due to some recent high-profile cases in the news of non-native snake bites and snakes getting loose in neighborhoods additional municipalities are adding such laws.

I get them because I enjoy watching them slowly change throughout the years, watch them grow. It's also really cool to just have them physically in your hands, I photograph my snakes a lot. Just looking at pictures isn't as good as actually having one - if you like them.

>>2472300
Every 4-6 weeks. Snakes go into feeding mode when they smell food, and can last for up to several days after eating. They aren't necessarily still hungry, but they're opportunistic so they'll be on the alert just in case, as their biology is telling them that they don't know when the next meal is coming. If you feed too often it's unhealthy for them, even if they seem to want to eat more.

It's also cooling off in certain areas right now (not sure if you live in the US or not), so if you're approaching winter a male is going to start going into breeding mode. They'll get hungrier for awhile, get a little moodier and more active, and some will actually start refusing food. They'll also leave sperm everywhere, especially if you have a female somewhere in the house.

So lately I've been thinking about a Peter's banded skink, they're cute af and their varied diet interests me.

However, the care sheets I've looked at say that sand should be the substrate, which is obviously a no-go because of impaction risk. I know that skinks like to dig and burrow, though, and I want my future little leggy banana to be as happy as possible.

Any safer substrates that I could use aside from sand?
>>
>>2473328
If you look at his scales he is clearly adapted to sand.
Just because bearded dragons and leopard geckos shouldnt be on sand doesnt mean all species shouldnt. As long as your temperature, humidity etc is correct he is going to be fine.
>>
>>2473328
Don't feed him on the sand
Coco fiber mixed with plain soil would probably work also as a substrate, don't feed him directly on the substrate though
Maybe offer a bowl of dubias and repashy's grub pie for it's protein, and offer all it's food in a bowl

Hey guys,

So I'm Florida and this weekend dat Hurricane Irma is a comin'. If I lose power, what is the best way to keep my uro warm and healthy with the light he needs? Obviously, if possible I can put him in the sun for a bit, but that doesn't seem that feasible.

I know I can buy a gas powered generator, but I have no idea how to work one of those things and they cost hundreds of dollars. Is there any way to keep his light going in case of a power outtage? He has a 160W reptisun bulb
>>
>>2473412
If you can get him to eat in an empty feeding bin or an extra empty aquarium, that would be a good way for to him to get exercise while catching food and not ingest any substrate
I'm not sure how much of a risk for impaction there is but there is always a risk to some extent if any substrate is ingested.
In the wild the sand and soil is probably really packed down and they would also eat on top of large rocks and such
>>
>>2473421
Generators are really easy to work. I'm not expert on them either but in my experience it's
>Make sure it has oil
>put in gas
>turn it on
>rev it up

However those were some big ass generators and they weighed a ton. Those also needed to be outdoors. Instead of a generator, go to home depot or something for a battery. I forgot what they are called exactly but just make sure they are charged and they can handle what kind of power you're plugging it into. I'm sure someone else can explain this better than I can.

Worst case scenario, start heating water bottles.
>>
>>2472660

Okay yes you're best bet is to move her to a smaller tub. However I'm not sure you're getting an accurate read on how much your garg is actually eating. Baby geckos eat a miniscule amount of cgd; like a bottle cap's worth. It's also difficult to judge when they have eaten as they often don't leave visible lick marks on the surface of the food.

Now that said, your tank is indeed fuck huge for a baby. Something closer to a 12" cube or equivalent area would be better for the first eight months or so to keep feeding rate steady and stress levels low. Plastic tub is fine.
>>
>>2473421

It's not necessary to buy a generator. You can rent them. Operation for the small ones is the same as for the large as previous anon detailed. Generator has to be outside, you run an extension cord in to the house from it.

>How tricky is plexiglass to install?

I've just been working with acrylic/plexiglass for my own tank build and have learned a few things. It's not difficult so long as certain techniques are used to reduce the fiddlyness:

>buy your panel from an industrial plastics outfit like EM Plastics. They may require you to purchase a full 4 x 8 sheet but it will be cheaper overall. They can cut it to whatever dimensions you want ahead of time.
>use 1/4" (6mm) thickness minimum. Any thinner than that and you will get too much flex in the material making it hard to keep gaps between fasteners escape proof. Although for something iguana sized that probably less of an issue. Anyway. Use 1/4". It's easier to cut and easier to drill holes in without cracking it the thicker it is.

>Drilling holes in plexi is easy if you use a step drill bit. Pic related. You can use ordinary wood or metal bits, however with those you have to start with a small hole, switch bits to slightly larger one, switch bits again, etc. until you're at the desired diameter. Step bit has that covered in one package and I have never once cracked plexi using a step bit (have cracked a few times with ordinary bits)
>use rubber or nylon washers on both sides of your bolts to reduce stress on the plexi and eliminate possibility of cracking

>the easiest way to achieve a clean cut with an inexpensive tool is jig saw with Bosch plexiglass specific blade. Consult youtube tutorials to get an idea of blade speed (low) and feed rate (slow). Clamp a straight edge on the panel to guide your jigsaw along.

Do not remove the protective film from the plexi until you're all set to bolt it to your cage frame. Do all cutting and drilling with it still on.

Dirt, but I am saving to get an 8'x3x2 since this one is 5'x2'x2'. All monitors require deep dirt, lots of heat and a large water source. Of course there are those species that only require a small bowl of water, Savanna's or Goulldii, but even tree monitors may like to soak. Lots of space and no aquariums...Small wattage bulbs, I use a row of 3 39w par 38 bulbs and you don't need UVA/UVB, just feeding whole prey items is enough. All is debatable, FB is full of assholes ready to argue rather than just enjoy the hobby, so I no longer utilize the groups.

For tank and large items, best bet for complete disinfection is chlorhexidine. It is a common veterinary disinfectant and very effective. It can be purchased off Amazon. Fully rinse everything with water after disinfecting. Allow to dry completely. Then rinse once more.

For porous stuff like wood, cork bark, etc. bake in oven at 175 for about an hour.

I don't think he touched his heat lamp, that's the only possibility, he's in a cage for space purposes and the only wet thing in the cage is his water dispenser, the cage is open so he gets cold in the day if he doesn't sit right under his lamp, and he's still small enough that he doesn't hold heat long
>>
>>2474463
But yes he could've in fact touched his lamp with the top being open like the rest of the cage, I'd rather it be a burn than scale rot because that is easier to heal right?

Yea a burn will heal more easily naturally
Scale rot is generally treated with antibiotics a temperature raise and making sure it stays dry
