Recommendation for a newbie rig?
Only place I fish is off the piers or in a kayak down on the Texas Gulf Coast by Corpus Christi Port A or even up by Matagorda Bay

I used to use cheap ass $50 pole from Academy Sports but that was because I was just getting into it. Any suggestions? My budget is around $150-200

What all do you guys use senkos for? Wacky, drop shot, Texas, Carolina, punchbait?
>>
>>1081180
Wacky or Texas rigged. Never anything else besides those two. If I'm going to use a dropshot I will use a robo worm or a KVD dream shot
>>
Gonna be dragging lures off a boat for pikes next weekend.
>What lures should i drag?
>Paravane?
>Planer?
Used to catch pike as a kid with my dad using 2 rods dragged as slow as the motor on the boat would allow, we almost never had entanglement issues. Gonna be fishing with a friend this time and we are thinking about using 2 rods each.
Havent fished like this for more than 15 years or something so im probably way out of my expertise i guess
>>
First time in a few years while being subscribed to MTB that they have fucked up. They forgot a jig that was listed on the card. They also sent me the exact same lucky craft d-9 that I got a few months ago. afer exchanging some emails over the last few days they just sent me a shipping confirmation for the jig and the exact same d-9 that said I already got twice... are these people retarded?
>>1081191
Get some wire or flouro leaders. Tie that to your main line and clip on big deep diving jerkbaits or cranks if you have any. Big metalic colored spoons work as well. The bigger the bait the better. The smallest of snakes will still try for it if they see it and are hungry
>>
>>1081196
They just sent out an email the other day boasting about how much they have grown in 5 years.
>>
>>1081201
Yeah I saw that too lol. I just don't get how they sent me the same bait that we discussed is the bait I got twice and they were going to replace with something else. Maybe the just bill me for that lure and give me something of equal or greater value? Idk. If I get another d-9 in the mail I might have to consider dropping them
>>
>>1081212
Find somebody who sells em and exchange that bitch for something else
>>
>>1081180
Wacky or weedless weightless. Or when a fish fuckmangles one I'll trim it down to 2.5-3" and Ned rig the stump.

I use Z-drops, Roboworms, or Finesse worms for dropshot.

Nothing is deep enough to bother Carolina rigging here.

The only Texas rigging I do is creature stuff, I've not once ever had even a nibble T-rigging a worm.
>>
>>1081196
Yeah I dropped MTB this last month due to them fucking up
>single flipping hook valued at $9.99
>a fucking 3-pack of Big Bite Baits crawdad plastics is valued at $5.49 when I can get a 10-pack from Dick's for $1.99
>says they sent me MTB-branded garlic scent, didn't get any, they claim to have shipped out a replacement 3 weeks ago, didn't get it or a tracking number or any other confirmation, they haven't responded to any emails in 2 weeks
Honestly even contemplating filing a chargeback for fraudulent business practices.
>>
>>1081227
Zoom makes these shakey head worms that are bretty kewl too. They are about the same length as finesse worms but get really thin at the tail end and gives em good action. I have a pack of the Z-Drop worms too and a couple packs of Fluke Stiks which are basically senkos with a little tail and I have landed a lot on the fluke stiks.

>>1081236
That was it? The big bite, the hook, and the garlic? You had to get one real hard bait. What does that hook look like?

But that's stupid they would send Big Bite in there. I mean the stuff isn't bad, just common and cheap and the whole point of MTB was supposed to be introducing people to new brands, not shit that goes on sale for 99¢ at Dick's.
>>
>>1081241
Oh, there was other shit in there. Gimme a sec, I haven't taken it out of the wrappers yet. I'll get a pic.

AYO HOL' UP

I found the garlic scent.

This is apparently $5.50 worth of garlic scent.

It was stuck under a corner of the box.

I'm legit more pissed they valued this at $5.49 than I am the thought I didn't get any. I can get TWO OUNCES of Spike-It garlic for $5.99.

>>1081250
And it's their brand and some sample pack. Wtf.

>>1081253
Yeah that's weak. Those Bagleys are straight but like $7, Charlies Worms are pretty cheap but not bad, the garlic scent is stupid, the Big Bite is something you could get out of a clearance bin for 50¢. I mean realistically there's like $15 worth of actual tackle between the Bagley, the jig, and the Charlie's worms. For a regular box it's not terrible but that sucks for the Pro box since those Bagleys are inexpensive and a lot of times they will give you a $10+ crank at least.

So the far right, that's the $5 hook? And what is the thing next to it?
>>
>>1081259
Jesus

>>1081273
Wut color? Those worms are straight tho right?
>>
>>1081278
Far right is the TEN DOLLAR hook. $9.99 according to the card.

The thing next to it is a 6pk of bobber stops, valued at $3.49 according to the card but they're identical to the Eagle Claw bobber stops that you can get a 50pk for $2.99.

Don't ask me what the fuck bobber stops are doing in a goddamn bass box.

Worst part is, the first 3 boxes were straight af. LC cranks, $10 jigs I actually like, big-assed bags of plastics that actually work, etc. The last 2 have been duds tho.
>>
>>1081281
You use bobber stops for punch rigs you dumb googan
>>
>>1081291
No, you fucking peg it. Either with a (free) toothpick or Peg-It™ which damn sure isn't $3.50.
>>
>>1081284
I ended up doing 3mos. With the $10 off, it was like $10 per box. I was happy because each one came with at least one big bait that I would consider spending close to $10 on.

I'm still debating doing LTB the same way if I can find a code. Or maybe try the inshore box.

>>1081281
That's ridiculous. You should look the shit up online and see how much it really costs. That sample tube of garlic scent should be free and counted towards the box.

Also now lookin at those punch rigs, I thought it was an actual jig, not just a skirt. Kinda fucked up.

>Big Bite Baits
Well, nobody fucking sells 4 packs, best I can do is a 10-pack. $1.99-$2.49 depending on where.
>Charlie's Worms Chunk
$2.99
>Bagley Bang O Lure
$5.99 but "discontinued" at Dick's, $7.35 at Bamboo Baits
>Heavy Metal Punch Rig
I can't even fucking find a webpage for the company and the only mention of it online is MTB's own page. Similar punch rigs (tungsten skirt) run from $3.99-$6.49 depending on brand.
>MTB-brand bobber stops
Yeah fuck them, gonna compare them to a 10-pk of Eagle Claw. $0.99.
>Zone-Loc flipping hook
Pic related. Zone-Loc's own fucking website. 4 pack for $5.49, which puts them pretty well in line with the KVD hooks or Owner hooks.

>actual retail value of the $24.99 Pro box:
$0.80 ($1.99/10, x4)+$2.99+$7.35+5.24 (median between $3.99 and $6.49)+$0.99+$1.37 ($5.49/4)==$18.74

Total ripoff. Especially considering my first box contained a LC Flashminnow ($20 by itself) and the box after that contained a Whopper Plopper 130 ($18) and a Boyd Duckett topwater ($12).
>>
>>1081301
so buy a 99 cent 25pk of Peg-Its.

If you use a bobber stop with a punch rig, it will slide freely up and down the line. Especially if you use braid, because it will slide over the bobber stop.

No shorter than 2 feet, depending on where/how/what you're fishing it might be up to 8 feet.

I got that Duckett topwater 2 months ago, and I got the flicker worms last month (although in a different color). I have only gotten the one Lucky Craft, which was in the first box, and I've never gotten anything by Lunkerhunt.
>>
>>1081329

Thanks dawg.

>>1081328

I have some streams and rivers 2 hours away, but lakes are what are around me. We have a big river running to the south of me that has Goldeyes, mooneyes, walleye, pike, suckers and sturgeon in it. The streams and rivers further out have Bull trout and other cold water fish that are found in the foothills. Fly fishing just seems really relaxing and fun.
>>
>>1081323
Walleyes....they CAN be caught on fly rigs, but they might not be the best fish for beginners to fly fish for.
Not because you can't do it, but more the sense that they're not generally caught on the kind of fly fishing techniques that makes people fall in love with fly fishing.
Leech patterns, clouser minnows, long leaders and sink tip line are the name of the game for walleye, especially when they're suspended 10-15 feet down.
>>
>>1081147

Also those Ned rigs def aren't great for these ponds. Would probably work better with a Trick Worm that would stand up thru the mud and grass.

That Rip Stop and a wacky rig were getting the most attention. First fish ever on a wacky rig. Those rings are supposed to help the worm last longer too, so much for that.

Had a 6" worm on there (ExoStick shit from MTB) and something grabbed onto it for awhile but idk if it was a snek or LMB. The area was this grassy patch where a lot of sneks hide so it may have been a small-med one since they love to grab part of a bait and run.

>>1081394

I'm content just cancelling my sub. I might do a one-off with LTB if they put out a good coupon or something instead of the $5 off they have now though. I'm not vengeful enough to go around leaving shit reviews because I broke even after 5 months.
>>

It's shitty they didn't email you back about it though. They've always been good about getting back to me. Are you sure you sent the email to the right address?
>>
>>1081410
I had about a 5-reply conversation chain with them over the garlic scent, they said they'd ship me a new one priority mail. Never gave me a tracking number, and when I didn't get it 8 days later I emailed back asking if they'd shipped it yet because I hadn't gotten anything, by replying to their last one in the same chain. are yyamamamamyto senkos a meme

how do other stick baits do for you guys?
>>
>>1081470
No.

They don't perform quite as well. Some are close enough to be worth having if the bite is hot and you're not willing to blow through $30 in yamasenkos, some are utter shit.

In my experience the hierarchy goes:
>Yamasenko
>-----
>Z-Man Zinker
>BPS Stick-O
>F&S Sugar Stix
>Yum Dinger
The Zinkers are hands down the most durable, and come fairly close on action. Dingers are the cheapest and second-most durable, but they're hard as fugg. StickO's can be bought in bulk and are kind of a middle-ground.
>>
>>1081476
Is f&s sugar stix actually better than dinger? That shit goes on sale all the time
>>
>>1081483
I think so, but the gap is very very close.

Dingers go on sale all the time too.

The only reason I even tried the Sugar Stix is I work for F&S and get an extra 5% off on F&S brands above and beyond my normal employee discount.
>>
>>1081486

What rod should I pair this with? I was thinking something around 6'6" medium action would suit me, but I am a little concerned that they tend of have fairly low line ratings (like 6-12) that would be likely to break with this setup.

If you're gonna run 30lb braid you should be using a longer MH rod. Moderate or mod-fast unless you're making a frogging rig, then mod-fast to fast.

Dick's is running a 50% off sale on several good rods right now, I would recommend the Lew's Carbon Fire. It's $39.98 currently.

How does one store and transport a couple of meme eel v2's, they are 40 CM long, which is larger than my actual tackle box? Also, did anyone figure out a good way to store and transport flourocarbon leaders? Having them all turn to a big pile of shit in a backpack makes me die a little inside every time
>>
>>1081706
The tail should be able to fold or curl back up the body. Not sure what tackle box/bag you're using but they should fit in a standard 3700-size box that way.

I use old, empty tippet spools to coil my leaders on (both for regular fishing and my fly leaders). Alternately, ziploc sandwich bags.

Any tips on hook setting? I caught a bunch of bass yesterday but even more came off.
>>
>>1081711
If you are jigging them and consistently lose fish, sharpen your hooks. They take the jig full tilt and should hook themselves properly without any efford from you.

Alternatively, switch to a different/better hook/jig-head. I honestly cant really tell how you are fishing for them though
>>
>>1081711
On topic of just hook sets: crimp the barbs. Ive been doing that with all my hooks and still land big bass on t-rigs.
From experience; I normally will lose small fish. T-rigs arent really for catching dink bass effectively.
I lower my drag down and dont put too much force on the fish, I think that just makes the hole in their mouth bigger and makes you lose it.
The drag should be easy enough to pull with my hand with some force.
>>
>>1081717
>Better hook/jighead
I'll go buy some next time I'm out, right now I'm using whatever ancient ones I found in this old tacklebox
>Can't tell how I'm fishing for them
I rigged some worms texas style but I didn't have any bullet weights so I just got close to the weed bank and drifted downstream pulling the worm through.
>>1081719
>Lower drag
Thanks, I'll try that.
>>
>>1081723
Im using walmart hooks to catch 2-3 lb smallies. Dont doubt cheap hooks. Just check if the old hooks you're using are pointy.

Oh also I just use split shots right above the line's knot instead of bullet weights.

They work tho.
Last time I went out catfishing I used these and my brother was using circles.

He still guthooked a few.
Every one of mine was in the corner of the mouth.
>>
>>1081711
Set the hook straight up, and be sure you're getting all the slack out of your line. If you're using mono you're gonna have to set it pretty hard.
>>
>>1081711
Get a cheapo pocket sharpening stone and file your hook points.
If you think they might be short striking, wait a second to set your hook.
>>
>>1081732
Also, there's no need to use heroic hooksets, especially if you're using braid.
Mono is different. It's so stretchy that you NEED a hookset that big to even get any force to the hook to set it. But braid doesn't stretch hardly at all, so just a quick snap of your wrists is all it takes. If you do your impression of a TV fishing show host with braid, you'll rip the hook right out of their mouths.

Dont do this so much, often your reaction-time vs the fish's swiftness will be enough time for a wait. As soon as I feel something, I reel in and set the hook. When I used to wait I gut hooked.

Their web presence is pretty retarded. They show a lot of individual hooks from A side view. Which does show you the general shape of the hook, but not the reason why you should spend the extra money for THEIR hooks.

Here's an offset shot of a different hook of theirs that shows why they work. The slanted part of the shank causes the point to turn when the fish bites down on it before you set the hook.
There's nothing else special about their catfish hooks. They're just a regular O'Shaughnessy shape with the slanted shank, but that slanted shank works as advertised.

How do I stop this from happening?
Is it the snap hook that I tie at the end of the line to change lures quickly?

That clicking sound is the anti reverse
>>

Try braking the line with your hand/finger a second before the lure hits the water, that should make the tail end go furthest and then you might avoid it.
>>
>>1081790
When I removed it the anti reverse quit working.
I figured out the clicking sound is the anti reverse doing its job and acting like a hammer on the main gear. I could probably soften it so it's not metal on metal. But for now I'll just pass on using that vintage lil thing

>>
>>1081782
I looked at those, cool idea but I refuse to carry it around because of how heavy it is
>>
>>1081781
That's what I was talking about when I said it's going to be noisier.
That sound is from a metal anti-reverse cam (the thing held on by a screw on the removed panel) that rides on those steps you see on the backside of the main gear. It's held tight to the main gear by a spring actuated by the lever on the back of the reel. It's durable as fuck and near-instantaneous, but it clicks.
Turning off the anti-reverse makes the sound go away, but then you have a free-spooling spinning reel in your hand.
>>
>>1081749
There is literally nothing wrong with buying expensive lures.
>>
>>1081787
Theres a number of ways you can work around this that i am not going to mention.

Use a finger to stop the cast in the air before you hit water, 99% of the time this will straighten the line/lure for you. you might lose like one meter off your cast, but then, you might actually catch fish when you do it this way
>>
>>1081794
Stupid people are miracle workers, I shit you not.

>>1081811
Dabs of grease on the gear teeth as well as the face and sides of the anti reverse cam will quiet it down a little, just by sheer fact of the grease muting the vibrations of the cam like sponge dampening a bell.

yea just apply pressure with a finger to the spool and you should be fine, it SHOULD straighten out when you do that. Theres the odd chance its the lure being retarded, using a flouro leader (which is stiff as fuck) absolutely have to solve it, if it doesnt, try throwing the wobler without attaching your line to it and pick up something else to fish with.

Or depending on what you are fishing for, switching trebles to singles might do the trick. But that really depends what you are fishing for.

Could be. I rarely have problems with bass ripping off the soft plastic tho, it's the panfish that try and rip at them. And if bass do have just the bait in their mouth and you don't hook em, they let go pretty easily.

I try not to throw old soft baits in the water either. If I'm near my car, I put em in my pocket and then drop it in a bag of old torn up baits I'm going to mail to skid one day. I actually have a couple half worms on my work bench I need to add to the bag. Otherwise I toss them in the bushes somewhere far from shore.

The one snek that had a whole fat worm in his belly, he didn't look skinny at all.

Just wait till you pull a fish in and realize it ate your weight on a dropshot and not your lure...and held on long enough for you to land it.

I've also landed bluegill that got a thingamabobber in their mouth while nymphing, a crappie that had the willow blade of a Rocket Shad and not the hook, and a sauger that bit the downplaner while trolling.

Fishing for frogs is actually kinda fun. It doesn't take any skill and can be done anywhere there is water and frogs. Since all the fish at the golf course I fished at are dead sometimes when I bored I will go over and fuck around with the bull frogs.

Fast-sinking line, fluoro leader/tippet, and a large weighted streamer.

>>
>>1082225
Yes.

Fish can and do see you. If you look like a clown you can and will spook fish.

Light colors help deter bugs and keep you cooler as well.

Think also big public lakes at the piers and ramps around start of the spawn/Memorial Day/Labor Day/July 4th weekends, and wherever they've had busts in the recent past.
Kind of like how game wardens show up at all the nearby hunting camps around WMAs the day before gun season opens, checks everybody's licenses and reminds them to take down their feeders and salt blocks.

I understood it after I moved down here. The neighborhoods change fast so you can live in a nice neighborhood but still have to shop at the same grocery stores as these animals.

Growing up outside of Chicago, my city was 2/3 white people and 1/3 Mexicans and you see the black people in the hood and think "I feel bad for those people, the only reason they act like animals is because they grew up in such a terrible area". Then I grew up and my eyes were opened and I realized "Wow, if we took all these people out of the West Side, gave them $100k/yr jobs in the suburbs, they would still act like animals. And if we put poor white people on welfare in their place on the West Side, it would still be a lower class area but everything would be so much nicer."

>Bosnians
Okay, the guys who actually lived in Bosnia are...rough. Hard working, hard playing (this usually means hard drinking and hard smoking too), not a lot of regard for laws, but not like they're gonna start bar fights or start flinging 4oz pyramid sinkers at you if you tell them they're fishing illegally. Their kids, however, definitely play the victim card even though most weren't even dreamt of when the B-H conflict ended, and are super fucking entitled. The kids are more likely to thumb their noses at the law and be violent towards law enforcement than any other sub-set in the city, and seem to go out of their way to form Russian Mob-esque drug gangs (complete with disappearing people and trafficking in sex slaves)
>Mexicans
The actual border hoppers tend to be hard working people who only really give a shit about providing for their family (sometimes this puts them crossways with the law but it's not like they're stealing change out of cars to buy a new beanermobile). Their kids are the drug mules, cholos, etc. even though they LITERALLY got handed a good life on a silver platter built off the sweat equity of their parents.
>Cubans
As you say

Semi-related are the 'Ricans. I dunno what's going on with them, they come from 'MURRICA lite, not like they're "escaping" abject poverty or high(er) crime or anything. And then they intentionally move into the biggest shitholes in the US (NYC, Daytona Beach, Atlanta, Charlotte) and promptly become thugs.

As for the kids by thier mid 20's 1/3 of them are still the sameb 1/3 of them are losers on a NEET level that blame whites for being held back and 1/3 of them grow out of this and are just as hard working as thier parents.
As a native Texan I can say I hold no ill will towards Mexicans, some of them have kin that fought next to mine, I do however hate lazy worthless fagots that have no self responsibility.

On a fishing note Mexicans are generally courteous fishermen (even though they keep things the should not) and are natural enemies of blacks so they keep the piers clean.

>tfw Pepsi can't into hook sets
Got that tiny guy, then had a nicer ~16" bass on and he jumped and threw the hook, a couple casts later hooked something that felt real nice and got it halfway before it spit the hook.

Found a lil sweet spot. Hit all 4 right near eachother. This guy fought good for the size.

Sounds about right. I work with a guy from Cuba and he keeps on telling me that we should go, and he'll show me around the island. Might take him up on it one of these days.

+1

It really gets on my nerves when they refuse to even try to speak English, and then get mad when I don't know Spanish.

So glad I left the intercoastal

I had a young one that crossed my line a few times at canyon lake, when I asked him to stop he said 'no hablo ingles'. I pulled out my phone and said 'that is alright I bet the game warden can translate'. It is amazing how fast he started fishing in his own spot and not mine.

That looks like a really shitty spot. Hit an inlet or fish from the beach
>>
Going to the South Holston in November to fly fish. Anybody from that region? If so, do you have any recommendations on flies to use? I'm taking my 4wt and my two 6wts.

Except for the whole thing where you actually catch fish.

I mean if you're just goin to get drunk and smoke some blunts, I agree I would rather be at the beach than some lake in an industrial complex.

Depends if you have a licence.
If you have one, almost never.

If you don't, every. Fucking. Time.
>>
>>1082846
It's your fault you're going to a sustenance fishermen spot. In texas I run as fast as I can from any saltwater spot with a lot of mexicans because most of them don't know how to fish. Have you ever considered taking the advice people here have given you and go to an inlet, beach or a pier? Maybe even asking a takleshop for good spots?
>>
>>1082849
Kek. Ofc that's how it goes

>>1082850
Shit, I go to that spot because it's a new park and people don't know you can get there without living in the condo complex right there.

New bread in the oven
>>
>>1082855
From what I can see in the picture there is no structure there. Go to an inlet with rocks and stuff

>The run stops
>You can see the bulge where your knot is tied
>Still thumbing the spool you start pumping and reeling
>Line that was white is now red

You will never have this from your golf course ponds.

How much was all of that?

Doesnt work with bigger baitfish, thats the problem. I guess ill have to make due. One of these days I'll have access to boat(s) and I won't have to launch a full trout halfway into orbit to reach big pike. Havent fished from a boat in, easily 10years, shit is gonna be so good
