So /out/, I've been attempting to fish in the lower tributaries of the Chesapeake bay, (James and York river), for the better part of three years now and can't seem to catch anything other than Croaker and Spot. I've been using basic bottom or high low rigs whilst drift fishing, usually baited with squid strips on circle hooks around size 1/0 to 4, I've also used bucktails, soft lures, live eels, and menhaden all to no success.

I'm generally using a 15ft skiff so I prefer to stay in the rivers since running out to the CBBT can get hairy if you couldn't make it back to Lynnhaven and the weather turned south. In terms of locations during Striped bass season I'll troll the bridges (64,664,JRB,Coleman) and during the summer I try to fish around the steeper channel shelves and creek inlets going for flounder, or anything else that's good eating.

What exactly am I doing wrong? I'm assuming the tides have a general effect on the feeding habits of fish, but due to time constraints I usually don't have the luxury of going out at a specific point of the cycle.

Caught these two 1,6kg trouts tonight. Fished for a couple of hours with a thruline spoon without catching anything, and then when it became completely dark I switched to a Gulp sandeel, retrieving them veery slowly just under the water surface. Couldnt see a thing, but I could hear them strike before feeling it. Pretty good night.

So I'm thinking about that rig where you use a floating lure then another lure,like a fly, a lil jig, or a spoon, tied to the back of it.

Basically youre fishing with a bobber but your bobber is a floating jerkbait that can still catch fish.

Anyone do it before? Exact name of the rig?

For me,

in basically all of my soft plastics. I've got an entire bait binder full of just Finesse Worms, Powerbait Floating Worms, and Roboworms, and I think the only pack in there that doesn't conform to that was given to me.

I buy flukes in pearl, bubblegum pink, and baby bass as well. I've fished other colors of flukes and with the sole exception of bluegill nipping the tails on white w/chartreuse tails I've never had a single strike on any other color.

I think I found the place. Anyone here fish someplace that has yet to be colonized by zebra mussels, although the threat of introduction is real and current? That Kentucky Flash, I have seen baby brush hogs in that color on the clearance rack at Dick's and almost bought then like 10 times but then remember how many fucking soft baits I have. It a lighter blue tho which I really haven't used, but white normally works well anytime and all of my medium to dark blue and purple baits are some of my favorites in murky water.

I'm somewhat involved with the Raritan river basin works. I volunteer for river cleanups and hear a lot about fish passage (mostly for American shad but there's alot more species that benefit like herring stripers eels etc) a lot of dams have been brought down. One just going down in a few days and I attended the ceremony for it.

There is a dam on the main stem of the river that has a low efficiency fish ladder, although A. Shad have been noted to swim up it, and then just get blocked up stream at a similarly sized dam without a ladder and an expensive job to take down since an important pipe goes through it, or something.

I met a very passionate engineer that works with the dams and likes to paddle in the rivers casually that is figuring out the best designs for these two dams.

I've done some fishing for shad with some biology studies trying to tag as much as possible, also net seining.

Idk if I've ever seen zebra muscles before.

PA, slightly-upper susky. they have been collected below and transported around the four mainstem dams for a few years now. we have been assessing their dispersal since stocking. if you're fishing a tidal creek on the east coast that has no blockages, there is a good chance that eels migrate up as far as they can and they can usually get past blockages that are barriers to most other fish.

Or use live/cut bluegill and shad, which is really the best bait for any kind of catfish other than 1-5lbs channel cat- which still readily bite it. It stays on the hook better, is generally cleaner than prepared bait, and unless you can't catch bluegill/shad for some insane reason, it's cheaper.

I mean I like that they make the water clearer but I haven't done any research on what effects they actually have besides water filtration. They have been in Oneida lake for my entire life so I wouldn't have any idea if it was better before they came in. From as far back as I can remember the amount of people specifically bass fishing on the lake has been increasing throughout my life. It gets a good amount of pressure in certain areas.

Will these plastic Gulp baits be as good or nearly as good as actual live chubs and worms or is there an inherent advantage that live bait has over plastics? I find plastics a lot easier and cleaner for obvious reasons

If it were me I'd get a Shimano Ultegra 2500 with a fenwick elite tech bass rod. I personally like Shimano reels but if you don't give a shit what brand you can go a little cheaper on the reel and put that towards a fenwick Aetos or a G loomis e6x rod. Tons of options in that price range for a really good spinning setup

I think kid's dad and whole family fish a ton so his dad is old school and he's on board with all the Youtubers that you fags love. But he made it sound like the saltwater fish love to chase baits that look like their natural prey and the bass are similar but will go for shit they have never seen before if you're going for a reaction strike. And he pretty much said most lakes around here are useless for shad baits and baby bluegill or bass are the way to go. That makes sense because baby bass colored soft baits do some work.

Also now I want to get out on the salt at sunrise but goddamn I want to sleep in tomorrow. If I wanted to wake up at 4:30am, I would've gone in to work for an easy 5hr day.

Cool so that's what I did when I saw a couple larger ones had already gone belly up. Spikey fucker and small catfish looking guy made it to the finish line.

What is it about flounders is that you don't really a "feel" a bite? Spent my first time really targeting and caught only one (legal) keeper but I never even would of guess I had one on the line until I started reeling in.

I've had no less than 4 Presidents fail catastrophically on me within 6 months of purchase. 3 fly reels and a spinning reel.

I also had a Pflueger Trion spinning reel that seized up before I even got it fully spooled, which I was able to return as defective.

I also have a Pflueger President travel rod (that included the original President fly reel and the President spinning reel that broke) that's a "convertible" rod (8' spinning and/or fly) that's pure shit, it literally has flown apart every single cast and the butt section is so loose even after only maybe 5 total trips with it that it will fall off the rest of the rod just under gravity. It was a $200 kit, and while Pflueger replaced both reels from the kit under warranty they told me to pound sand on the rod.

Literally no Pflueger product I've ever touched worked as advertised, much less was "good" and damn sure wasn't "best"

Should have added that the carp that I'm trying to target are big groups of schooling carp like the picture I posted above. They don't spook that easily and the schools usually have 30-40 fish all sitting still or moving very slowly in one direction

So can anyone tell me anything about Silstar?

I've had this reel 20+ years. I can't remember buying it, but it came as a combo with a pistol-grip MH rod. It has never seen much use, but seems to function fine.

The only markings on it are

No indication of gear ratio, line capacity, or anything else, though I suppose they could've worn off.

Cast a 6' net 1/2" mesh on the fuckers. I used to catch them on grub worms or mill worms with a bobber. I never bothered trying to eat one. Getting them off the hook is fun in and of itself.

I tested the Hopper dropper rig.

Use some small jerkbait, removed back trebel and tied a 1/64th jig on the back with a lil stonefly nymph plastic.

Sunnies were all on the jig but nothing bit the jerkbait. Was only fishing a creek which I've yet to find trout in.

Problems: The jerkbait slowly sunk because of the small weight added, I bet a floating rapala would have floated better,a and not this cheap thing from mtb

And Line got tangled a bit with the trebel hook but normally just after a missed hookset. Easy to fix.

I was thinking about making my own topwater lure with a nerf dart. Something very buoyant that can act like a jerkbait and also hold a hook.

I'll see how a rapala works out tommorow.

Otherwise, carp candy is a good option, as are san juan worms, and wooly buggers. Ive also gotten them to bite stoneflies and large pheasant tails

Go wadeing in a place you know they like, and sight fish. Find one with its nose down, and cast your fly so it lands on his nose, then give it a slow drag, or dead drift it past him of there is some current. If that doesnt get him, cast a bit past him (only like a foot) then either gently jig or slowly swim it past him, and try to make him hit it impulsively. Keep in mind even I think theyre autistic as fuck most of the time, so they will spook at nothing, ignore your fly for no clear reason, or some other frustrating bullshit. It's like trying to get a white tail to walk in to your arrow instead of shooting him with it

Using a grasshopper pattern with a big, heavy beadhead nymph very often has the same thing happen. Dont worry about it, just keep the drift going and watch it like a hawk, if it does anything it shouldnt, set the hook

I actually am a novice fly fisher. It would have been best where I went today since all I needed was that lil jig.

I eventually just went without the jerkbait and had the same luck tossing the lil jig, often inaccurately but managed to score dem creek chubs.

Update on jerkbait-lil jig rig:

I tried a 2 inch floating rapala and a 1/80th jig. Stayed floating. And even got a smallie on the rapala.

The line tangling with the trebel hook was still a minor problem.
After that smallie I just tossed a spoon out since the new stretch of this river was shallow and I just used it like a spinner. Nailed quantity but not much quality.

I think that lake has a bunch of sneks close to shore but it's really hard to get them because they get spooked so fucking easily. The trouble with the actual lakes here is that they almost always require a boat to get good access. Most of the good fishing is on docks and trees, which are usually hard to get to from shore, and surround the entire lake.

Currently live in bumblefuck Texas. The only good fishing I know of is salt in matagorda (40 min away) or lake texanna (same distance away) or port lavaca(an hour and something away). One fish, for example the flounder, is primarily a "sit and wait" ambush style predator. The tide is your friend with this animal, what you'll be looking for is something like an inlet, oyster bed, reef, some type of structure that will hold feed.

Next, you want to hit these structures that will be near a drop and be below the drop as the tide flows over the "edge" of the drop. The feed and everything will be forced off the drop and settle on the bottom because the smaller stuff is too weak or they fuck up and get blowed off. The flounder will wait at the base for things to blow down and then the things struggle to find shelter in those areas.

This is just one example of how to fish these organisms, I'd go with a bottom rig that has the sinker on the bottom, pretty big sinker, and then up the line a bit (2 foot or something) have your hook where you hook up a live shrimp or finger mullet. I don't know the names of these rigs, just how to make them.

The absolute best place to catch these fish, which you don't have access to it sounds like, is the outside of an inlet on an outgoing tide in the "wash out" area. The inlet blows all that shit out to the ocean and it settles out as the small feed in the bay gets swept out and everything just waits out there for shit to fall into their mouths basically.

It is as old as they say "think like a fish." Just imagine where the easiest meal is and you'll find them. They want to just sit there and basically have shit fall into their mouths, find those places. EX: giant boulder in a creek, the trout sits behind it in an edy and waits for little macroinvertebrates to fall out of the flow right into his mouth.

Im guessing white suckers cant be caught on lures. Ive caught a few carp on lil jigs but white suckers never even react to some flies. Sometimes the really juvenile ones that seem very opportunistic will get a nibble on it but thats it.

I think a lot of people don't know when to use what lures. Like yeah your big swimbait (something else they were using) can catch some damn good fish, but it's probably not the best for dink pond fish. People don't understand pond fishing =/= lake fishing, even from shore. Senkos are still the best lure I've found for ponds.

Well that was fucked. Cycled through every single fly I had with me spending 6+ hours drifting flies and despite being able to see the trout and cast right infront of them they would even look at it and often swam away scared even if it drifted by them. I found one small pool with hundreds of trout so I sat my ass there and tried to figure out what they would eat but like I said they wouldn't eat anything. I cut the fuzz off of one fly and dug up a worm to put on it and they wouldn't even look at live night crawler. I'm confused

I did find myself learning a lot about that stream while I was there though so I really had an enjoyable day. Weather was nice, new waders were not hot as balls and are super light. I didn't get skunked either. I found small grass perch in ankle deep water somehow and caught a few of those with little piece of nightcrawler on a shaved fly hook. Got a few pretty blue gills and white suckers too. I saw some fuck huge white suckers in there. I didn't know they got that big. They looked like a medium-small carp just sitting stationary not moving a muscle in the mud nestled up against a tree. There were piles of them, all just laying together not moving at all. If I would step near them they would scatter but after 30 seconds or so they would come right back and sit there. I tried some worms on them but they couldn't give a shit. I dangled a worm perfectly in the face of a giant one and he sucked it up but spit it back out before I could set the hook. I think it just did it out of annoyance. I saw some minnow sized largemouth bass too. Kinda weird but not that weird since the lake is maybe a mile upstream. The only bad part of the day was I managed to loose that fly box I posted earlier in response to skid. It must have floated downstream because there is no way I wouldn't have been able to find it

I'll have to get smaller ones then. Have no choice since all those flies are probably bobbing in that creek somewhere. Water felt kinda warm not really sure. Water is really shallow and crystal clear so the sun heats it up quick. I targeted the shaded areas and that's where I saw them. I stood still not moving my legs or my torso at all for 30 minutes targeting one pool where I could see at least 3 pretty big browns swimming around. When ever a fly would go past them the majority of the time they would do nothing. Other times they would swim away quick then stop somewhere close by. I had one stop almost right at my feet. I broke off a bunch of times so I varied my leader length depending on the fly I was using.

Shimano would be better for UL so your rod will feel more balanced and the drag is just as smooth. You don't need the full metal body that the penn has for UL fishing. I like the shimano sahara or sedona for that price range.

Both are fine since they both have better strenght than the line you tie in on. Unis wont ever cut themselves like bloods in theory might do.

That being said, ive fished +10 years using half bloods for literally everything its possible using it for. Jigs, Jerks, spinners, everything and ive never lost anything because of a weak knot. Ive switched over to unis recently just because, and i honestly cant tell the difference. Both are also fine for wacking your way out of snags and do fine when you somehow catch 5 clams and 3 rocks.

Using a blood over double uni always give you a smoother/slimmer knot, weather or not you give a shit about that is up to you. Personally i would never use a double uni instead of a blood, i cannot think of a single reason it should be better.

Also, looking online, theres aparently serveral ways of tying a bloodknot, this is the way you should do it, the other ones are retarded and doesnt make any sense

1. Stuff does not ship out of a warehouse, it's all "ship from store." We don't even actually have a warehouse.
2. Since it's all ship from store, that means some poor fucker has to wander around the store trying to find the proper item. If they can't, they deny the order and it gets kicked to another store further away. Since this was a huge sales weekend (baseball's going, football's going, soccer's still going, back-to-school just started, gear-up for deer season just started) stores are fucking trashed and even if the lure's physically in the store it may not be on its proper peghook and thus they can't find it
3. We are contracted with UPS, it's cheaper for us to ship with them than anyone else (a shoebox costs us about 40 cents to ship, a mailer bag with a couple crankbaits in it costs us like 2 cents to ship) due to that contract.

I wouldnt spool a rod with it, and you have to tie knots with absolute confidence, because if you half cinch them then try to really seat them they break, but if you seat them hard and suddenly, they're perfectly strong. They also turn flies over beautifully, because of how stiff it is. But again, I wouldn't spool a rod with it.

Dont make your butt stiffer for heavier spplicstions, just adjust your leader taper
For trout on a 9 foot leader I tie something like this
>4 feet of 20
>2 feet of 15
>18 inches of #10
>2 feet of 3x tippet
But then for a 9 foot bass leader I tie this
>5 feet of #20
>2.5 feet of #15
>2 feet of 1x or 0x tippet
I just increase the butt section to make a stronger, more aggressive leader

Today was a good day. Got some time off and spent the day canoeing up the Charles River and throwing weedless rigged worms into weed patches. Got a few small largemouths like this, then drifted downstream into an area with a lot more downed timber. Saw a bunch of panfish chasing my worm so I switched over to a tiny hard bait to see if I could hook some and the biggest bass of the day swoops out of nowhere and smashes it. Also saw a Bald Eagle which is pretty rare for eastern mass.

Recommendation for a newbie rig?
Only place I fish is off the piers or in a kayak down on the Texas Gulf Coast by Corpus Christi Port A or even up by Matagorda Bay

I used to use cheap ass $50 pole from Academy Sports but that was because I was just getting into it. Any suggestions? My budget is around $150-200
