So /out/, I've been attempting to fish in the lower tributaries of the Chesapeake bay, (James and York river), for the better part of three years now and can't seem to catch anything other than Croaker and Spot. I've been using basic bottom or high low rigs whilst drift fishing, usually baited with squid strips on circle hooks around size 1/0 to 4, I've also used bucktails, soft lures, live eels, and menhaden all to no success.

I'm generally using a 15ft skiff so I prefer to stay in the rivers since running out to the CBBT can get hairy if you couldn't make it back to Lynnhaven and the weather turned south. In terms of locations during Striped bass season I'll troll the bridges (64,664,JRB,Coleman) and during the summer I try to fish around the steeper channel shelves and creek inlets going for flounder, or anything else that's good eating.

What exactly am I doing wrong? I'm assuming the tides have a general effect on the feeding habits of fish, but due to time constraints I usually don't have the luxury of going out at a specific point of the cycle.

Caught these two 1,6kg trouts tonight. Fished for a couple of hours with a thruline spoon without catching anything, and then when it became completely dark I switched to a Gulp sandeel, retrieving them veery slowly just under the water surface. Couldnt see a thing, but I could hear them strike before feeling it. Pretty good night.
>>
So I'm thinking about that rig where you use a floating lure then another lure, like a fly, a lil jig, or a spoon, tied to the back of it.

Basically youre fishing with a bobber but your bobber is a floating jerkbait that can still catch fish.

Anyone do it before? Exact name of the rig?

Soft plastic question: who uses a certain profile in multiple colors? Or is the philosophy that with each new shape comes a new color?
>>
>>1078500
Popper dropper rig.
>>
>>1078563
I do. I basically buy every soft bait I like in a bright, dark, white, and natural color.

If I change lure profiles I generally try the same color first, since the weather usually determines my color choice more than anything else.
>>
>>1078567
Bright meaning anything not a variation of watermelon, green pumpkin, white, black, or junebug?

Would red, royal blue, pink, and motoroil/oranges count or do you mean anything with chartreuse?
>>
>>1078585
For me,
>I will buy white (if available), bubblegum pink, junebug or whatever's closest to junebug, black, morning dawn or whatever's closest to morning dawn, some form of bright red like Red Shad, black w/ sparkly shit a la South Africa Special or Black w/ Blue Flake, and watermelon violet
in basically all of my soft plastics. I've got an entire bait binder full of just Finesse Worms, Powerbait Floating Worms, and Roboworms, and I think the only pack in there that doesn't conform to that was given to me.

I buy flukes in pearl, bubblegum pink, and baby bass as well. I've fished other colors of flukes and with the sole exception of bluegill nipping the tails on white w/chartreuse tails I've never had a single strike on any other color.

>if it's the printer, I have to drive 45min back to the warehouse, spend 30min downloading onto new handheld, then 45min back and maybe get to my 2nd stop by noon
Shoulda stayed home. But there's only two guys who know these stops at this college, one is on vaca and the other is hurt or some shit so they threw it on me even tho I barely know it.

>>1078731
Depends mang. Supposedly black baits are good when it's dark. Skid loves black Jitterbugs. Rapala SkitterPops have been my favorite topwater, and it's the only popper I have really done well with. "Brown Frog" is my favorite color, but sometimes the Firetiger one will work better, even at the same lake the natural frog one was killin it at a week before,

I think I found the place. Anyone here fish someplace that has yet to be colonized by zebra mussels, although the threat of introduction is real and current? I come from the Finger Lakes (NY) and we have had them my entire adult life, and everyone knows the fishing was better pre-zebra mussel (although other AIS introductions are likely to blame as well, though typically poorly understood). I am interested in angler perceptions/opinions on invasive species introductions and best methods for raising awareness within the angling community.
>>
>>1078780
What's the verdict on Zoom's Sapphire Blue or Kentucky Flash?
>>
>>1078793
That Kentucky Flash, I have seen baby brush hogs in that color on the clearance rack at Dick's and almost bought then like 10 times but then remember how many fucking soft baits I have. It a lighter blue tho which I really haven't used, but white normally works well anytime and all of my medium to dark blue and purple baits are some of my favorites in murky water.

>>
>>1078793
I think those would be good colors for deep clear water. I'm sure they'd catch fish any where though. Accurate cast > lure profile > color

>>1078792
I think the only real thing you can do to help prevent it is put signs everywhere around the lakes. Especially at boat ramps. Maybe include something about invasives in boaters ed (can't remember if they already do this here, it's been a minute).
>>
>>1078808
I'm somewhat involved with the Raritan river basin works. I volunteer for river cleanups and hear a lot about fish passage (mostly for American shad but there's alot more species that benefit like herring stripers eels etc) a lot of dams have been brought down. One just going down in a few days and I attended the ceremony for it.

There is a dam on the main stem of the river that has a low efficiency fish ladder, although A. Shad have been noted to swim up it, and then just get blocked up stream at a similarly sized dam without a ladder and an expensive job to take down since an important pipe goes through it, or something.

I met a very passionate engineer that works with the dams and likes to paddle in the rivers casually that is figuring out the best designs for these two dams.

I've done some fishing for shad with some biology studies trying to tag as much as possible, also net seining.

Idk if I've ever seen zebra muscles before.
>>
>>1078837
What state is this? I've been catching a lot of eels recently in nearby tidal creek. In ny i recently read an article that the bronx river is clean enough for babby eels.
>>
>>1078872
PA, slightly-upper susky. they have been collected below and transported around the four mainstem dams for a few years now. we have been assessing their dispersal since stocking. if you're fishing a tidal creek on the east coast that has no blockages, there is a good chance that eels migrate up as far as they can and they can usually get past blockages that are barriers to most other fish.

You can try pic related. But I still hate that dough bait. Dip bait, the sticky stuff in the jars, is easier to use and has always produced better for me.
>>
>>1078943
They're Hindus when it comes to defecation.
>>
>>1078943
not sure where you're going with defecation, but it sounded to me like >>1078899 was asking about a spawning movement. there isn't any other reason i can think that they would move back into the coves or up into creeks other than to avoid a lower temperature (they die somewhere around 40 f), or because there is food in that shallow, wamer water. The question needs to be better thought out, if you prefer a different answer.
>>
>>1078936

I use trout power bait on slamon egg hooks without any real issues.

When I use other doughbait, I just use a treble hook. If it's drier, I can manage with a circle hook, where I just

But I usually do what >>1078955 does and use punch bait.

Or use live/cut bluegill and shad, which is really the best bait for any kind of catfish other than 1-5lbs channel cat- which still readily bite it. It stays on the hook better, is generally cleaner than prepared bait, and unless you can't catch bluegill/shad for some insane reason, it's cheaper.

I mean I like that they make the water clearer but I haven't done any research on what effects they actually have besides water filtration. They have been in Oneida lake for my entire life so I wouldn't have any idea if it was better before they came in. From as far back as I can remember the amount of people specifically bass fishing on the lake has been increasing throughout my life. It gets a good amount of pressure in certain areas.

I'm mostly fishing midwestern (US) rivers for flatheads and blue cats.

Will these plastic Gulp baits be as good or nearly as good as actual live chubs and worms or is there an inherent advantage that live bait has over plastics? I find plastics a lot easier and cleaner for obvious reasons

Live bait always out perform plastic of course. However, artificials are always there for convenience. However. I don't see artificial working well for catfish.

>tfw wanted a couple X-Raps in size 10 but a deciding factor was the lack of space in my tackle bag
I think kid's dad and whole family fish a ton so his dad is old school and he's on board with all the Youtubers that you fags love. But he made it sound like the saltwater fish love to chase baits that look like their natural prey and the bass are similar but will go for shit they have never seen before if you're going for a reaction strike. And he pretty much said most lakes around here are useless for shad baits and baby bluegill or bass are the way to go. That makes sense because baby bass colored soft baits do some work.

Also now I want to get out on the salt at sunrise but goddamn I want to sleep in tomorrow. If I wanted to wake up at 4:30am, I would've gone in to work for an easy 5hr day.

What is it about flounders is that you don't really a "feel" a bite? Spent my first time really targeting and caught only one (legal) keeper but I never even would of guess I had one on the line until I started reeling in.

But boy getting in those fuckers onto land then they sure off cause some commotion.
>>
>>1079228
I've had no less than 4 Presidents fail catastrophically on me within 6 months of purchase. 3 fly reels and a spinning reel.

I also had a Pflueger Trion spinning reel that seized up before I even got it fully spooled, which I was able to return as defective.

I also have a Pflueger President travel rod (that included the original President fly reel and the President spinning reel that broke) that's a "convertible" rod (8' spinning and/or fly) that's pure shit, it literally has flown apart every single cast and the butt section is so loose even after only maybe 5 total trips with it that it will fall off the rest of the rod just under gravity. It was a $200 kit, and while Pflueger replaced both reels from the kit under warranty they told me to pound sand on the rod.

Literally no Pflueger product I've ever touched worked as advertised, much less was "good" and damn sure wasn't "best"

Flounders are dumb asses and also terrible swimmer so they feel like dead weight. They also keep bite, get hooked up, and swim along with your line for a while before starting to "fight". They sure flop around like a fucker and bite your shit if it's a specie with teeth after you landed them though

Pflueger is shit, pure and simple.

Wooly buggers, crawdad patterns, San Juan worms, sinking ants or sinking an ant with splitshot. Put it in front of them and just make it wiggle a little bit.

If you live somewhere with cottonwood trees, tie a mass of blonde dog hair on a dry fly hook and dead float it.
>>
>>1079196
>>1079250
Should have added that the carp that I'm trying to target are big groups of schooling carp like the picture I posted above. They don't spook that easily and the schools usually have 30-40 fish all sitting still or moving very slowly in one direction
>>
So can anyone tell me anything about Silstar?

I've had this reel 20+ years. I can't remember buying it, but it came as a combo with a pistol-grip MH rod. It has never seen much use, but seems to function fine.

The only markings on it are
>Silstar EDGE Classic
>Egio ball bearing
and
>KOREA stamped in the reel foot
No indication of gear ratio, line capacity, or anything else, though I suppose they could've worn off.

How shit is it?
>>
>>1079255
Cast a 6' net 1/2" mesh on the fuckers. I used to catch them on grub worms or mill worms with a bobber. I never bothered trying to eat one. Getting them off the hook is fun in and of itself.

I tested the Hopper dropper rig.

Use some small jerkbait, removed back trebel and tied a 1/64th jig on the back with a lil stonefly nymph plastic.

Sunnies were all on the jig but nothing bit the jerkbait. Was only fishing a creek which I've yet to find trout in.

Problems: The jerkbait slowly sunk because of the small weight added, I bet a floating rapala would have floated better,a and not this cheap thing from mtb

And Line got tangled a bit with the trebel hook but normally just after a missed hookset. Easy to fix.

I was thinking about making my own topwater lure with a nerf dart. Something very buoyant that can act like a jerkbait and also hold a hook.

I'll see how a rapala works out tommorow.

Youre making it hard on yourself. Fly fishing for carp is a lot mpre like hunting than fishing.
Let's start here
>if he doesnt have his nose in the mud, you can't catch him
Plain and simple, if he is not already eating, your odds of making him eat are minimal at best and you're better off flinging a treble hook at him and trying to snag him
After that, something earthy-coloured (Browns, olives/greens, dark oranges) that is really buggy and has rubber legs. I tie something I call a backwards bug, and I could tie a few for you and ship them to you for a reasonable cost (if you are interested, I'll give you my email so we can work something out)
Otherwise, carp candy is a good option, as are san juan worms, and wooly buggers. Ive also gotten them to bite stoneflies and large pheasant tails
>how to catch them
Go wadeing in a place you know they like, and sight fish. Find one with its nose down, and cast your fly so it lands on his nose, then give it a slow drag, or dead drift it past him of there is some current. If that doesnt get him, cast a bit past him (only like a foot) then either gently jig or slowly swim it past him, and try to make him hit it impulsively. Keep in mind even I think theyre autistic as fuck most of the time, so they will spook at nothing, ignore your fly for no clear reason, or some other frustrating bullshit. It's like trying to get a white tail to walk in to your arrow instead of shooting him with it

>The jerkbait slowly sun
Using a grasshopper pattern with a big, heavy beadhead nymph very often has the same thing happen. Dont worry about it, just keep the drift going and watch it like a hawk, if it does anything it shouldnt, set the hook
Also you are about 3 steps away from.fly fishing, and if you ever have $100 burning a hole in your pocket I can get you set up to fly fish (rod, reel, line, leader tying kit, and a few flies)

I actually am a novice fly fisher. It would have been best where I went today since all I needed was that lil jig.

I eventually just went without the jerkbait and had the same luck tossing the lil jig, often inaccurately but managed to score dem creek chubs.

I'm certain they're designed to only float on their own weight and a bit more. Rapalas however seems pretty buoyant.
>>
>>1079286
Honestly, buy a big foam hopper, size 6 or 8 and something like a size 14 bh hares ear and just dead drift it

It's low-tier stuff from the time. Not complete shit, but not remarkable. Silstar was trying to break into the US market, and those combos were competing with Abu Black max combos.

Not like it matters anyway. You can buy a super expensive Shimano assembled in Japan and it will still have some of the same parts as the reels made in the shitty Asian countries.

Update on jerkbait-lil jig rig:

I tried a 2 inch floating rapala and a 1/80th jig. Stayed floating. And even got a smallie on the rapala.

The line tangling with the trebel hook was still a minor problem.
After that smallie I just tossed a spoon out since the new stretch of this river was shallow and I just used it like a spinner. Nailed quantity but not much quality.

That's why I've only bought one box with the -$10 discount and quit. It's obviously a way to sell cheap lures collecting dust in a warehouse for some $$$

That or I figure lure-companies would start paying the box companies just to get their "I never heard of this brand before" lures into anglers hands to get recognition.

Maybe in the future when the box companies get even bigger, big brands will start putting their stuff in the boxes for once.

Same deal with how companies pay the retailer/store to put things on the shelf

I was going to get some Rooster Tails but there are like 40 colors with 10 sizes each and I got tired of clicking on them all. Lots of them were small sizes too, like 1/16oz-1/8oz and I wanted something larger. But the one you got, that 1/4oz black, I saw that and almost ordered like 10 of em because that's a solid color for any day and you can't be too mad when you snag a 66¢ lure.

>>1079886
>meme as fuck

>>1079888
>>1079891
Checked, and shitty. But yeah they do overvalue that stuff. It's often the highest retail price possible and then you will see the same bait on clearance at Dick's a week later for 1/3 the price.

I keep thinking about doing it again, maybe LTB since I could probably get a code from them and do another 3mos for $30-$35. I mean that's the cost of buying 2 Rapalas and a bag of Zoom at Bass Pro.

But I have enough stuff I already don't use. And since it's South Florda and warm, lots of the shit they send is almost useless here. One box was this Booyah wire spinner deal that you can attach a hardbait or rigged swimbait or whatever to the end. That was the main thing, supposedly $12 or some shit. Tried it once, it was a clusterfuck. Then a couple weeks later see the exact same thing at Dick's for like $3.50. Those meme baits piss me off from time to time. But that's why the're in MTB, tryin to clear out shit that doesn't sell at full price in stores.

Coolest thing was probably a Yo-Zuri 3DB and I don't think I have ever used a soft bait from those boxes. Or if I tried em, they didn't produce.
>>
>>1079908
That's what it is. Shit from big brands that isn't selling, and new brands where they're trying to get the name out.

>>1079891
Also you should email and complain, they will probably just send you a whole new box.

>>1079912
Kek. I wish I lived in bumblefuck, Texas and had all those little random lakes you got. Too many overfishin nogs around here.

Plus like dude was talkin about yesterday, giant baits and all of that shad stuff don't work down here. You will do better with bluegill or baby bass colors most of the time. And the water is too shallow and warm for baits that errybody else would use for spring and summer.
>>
>>1079916
I mean, I've gotten a few things out of them that worked
>Catch Co meme worms
They're downsized Zoom trick worms, come in a 6ct bag that they valued at something ridiculous like $11, but fuck me they work BECAUSE THEY'RE A DOWNSIZED TRICK WORM.
>like 3 different Lucky Craft cranks
I mean, it's Lucky Craft. MTB's saying they're like $14-17 each when I can buy them at Dick's for $9.99 any day of the week or $5 on sale, but whatever.
>Bagley Rapala knockoff
Think they valued this pretty fairly and called it like $7 or something, but again it's a literally-who knockoff of a proven lure.

>>1079920
I did email and complain, they said they'd send me a replacement for the garlic scent. That was 3 weeks ago and nothing.

Gotta love Florida
>night fishin fresh because nothin better to do
>random rain cloud over lake just before I get there, no breeze so BUGS
>can't even turn on white light on headlamp for more than 15sec or I get swarmed
>Spoders everywhere, have to walk past trees and get spoder'd
>retrieve bait, drag it thru grass by shore, gets spoder'd
>soccer chair to rest bait rod on, chair gets spoder'd
>let rods sit with bait for 15min, get spoder'd
Had two rods out with those little shads, one on a catfish rig and one on the bottom and nothing touched em. Ther was some shit hitting the surface, coulda been panfish or sneks coming up but one bigger splash sounded like a bass. Ran some different lures and got skunked. But I rarely get much while night fishing unless it's like 20min after it gets dark.

>>1079922
>downsized Trick Worm
So like a Zoom Finesse Worm? 20pk for $3.49.

>Lucky Craft
I actually got two from them. One of them is something I would buy in a store, except a slightly smaller size. I almost bought one of those Pointer 100 or whatever they are called when I was at Bass Pro yesterday, but the color I liked I wanted in a slightly smaller size and I wasn't willing to pay $17

>Bagley
I actually bought a couple of those at Gander. One of those stickbaits with the prop and then this shallow diving crank that rattles. I have actually pulled some fish on that crank and I normally hate those fat bodied cranks. It's strange, they seem basic but they work for some reason. And for $6-$8, the price is right.

Also that's shitty they were just going to send the scent and it took forever. Some other anon had a problem with his box and they sent him a free month when there was only one thing missing. Can't remember if it was MTB or LTB tho.

And yes, finesse worms are fucking awesome and also cheap.

>>1079946
C'mon man, couldn't get any smaller dinks without changing species? WTF?
>>
>>1079950
If I would've done fresh at sunset instead of wasting time at the intercoastal, I could've landed some dinks.

I think that lake has a bunch of sneks close to shore but it's really hard to get them because they get spooked so fucking easily. Last one I caught there, I think it was guarding eggs or maybe fry but I couldn't see them. It kept chilling by the same spot and when I ran an inline past it, it would chase it off but not really bite. Then I ran it past really quick and finally got em.
>>
>>1079916
Sometimes meme lures actually work pretty good. I wouldn't buy one at full price, but still.

>>1079920
Eh we still have a lot of Mexicans to deal with, but they're usually going for catfish and are nice, so it's not too bad.

The trouble with the actual lakes here is that they almost always require a boat to get good access. Most of the good fishing is on docks and trees, which are usually hard to get to from shore, and surround the entire lake.

Or like if you look on google maps for water out in the country there's a 90% chance it's private property

The good thing is that almost any of the nicer neighborhoods will have ponds that no one cares if you fish in.
>>
>>1079869
That first sentence is so out of context but so believable. Great deal though, congrats.
>>
>>1079920
Currently live in bumblefuck Texas. The only good fishing I know of is salt in matagorda (40 min away) or lake texanna (same distance away) or port lavaca(an hour and something away). The rest for me is the Colorado, which to actually fish decently from you have to about 30 min away, closer to the beach since the water is so fierce where I'm at.
>>
>>1079976
That another box tactic. They put crap lures in the box then hope if someone wants to get more they have to buy it at a jacked up price.
>>
>>1078466
One fish, for example the flounder, is primarily a "sit and wait" ambush style predator. The tide is your friend with this animal, what you'll be looking for is something like an inlet, oyster bed, reef, some type of structure that will hold feed.

Next, you want to hit these structures that will be near a drop and be below the drop as the tide flows over the "edge" of the drop. The feed and everything will be forced off the drop and settle on the bottom because the smaller stuff is too weak or they fuck up and get blowed off. The flounder will wait at the base for things to blow down and then the things struggle to find shelter in those areas.

This is just one example of how to fish these organisms, I'd go with a bottom rig that has the sinker on the bottom, pretty big sinker, and then up the line a bit (2 foot or something) have your hook where you hook up a live shrimp or finger mullet. I don't know the names of these rigs, just how to make them.

The absolute best place to catch these fish, which you don't have access to it sounds like, is the outside of an inlet on an outgoing tide in the "wash out" area. The inlet blows all that shit out to the ocean and it settles out as the small feed in the bay gets swept out and everything just waits out there for shit to fall into their mouths basically.

It is as old as they say "think like a fish." Just imagine where the easiest meal is and you'll find them. They want to just sit there and basically have shit fall into their mouths, find those places. EX: giant boulder in a creek, the trout sits behind it in an edy and waits for little macroinvertebrates to fall out of the flow right into his mouth.

Im guessing white suckers cant be caught on lures. Ive caught a few carp on lil jigs but white suckers never even react to some flies. Sometimes the really juvenile ones that seem very opportunistic will get a nibble on it but thats it.

I remember catching one with my dad on nightcrawlers however
>>
>>1080166
nightcrawlers have always produced white suckers, fallfish, and redhorses for me in places when artificials would not. one or two split shots (enough to bounce in current) and an appropriate hook, worm threaded up past eye of hook. i was targeting walleye in these situations, but its amusing to see all the fish that were always avoiding my mister twisters

>>
>>1080441
I think a lot of people don't know when to use what lures. Like yeah your big swimbait (something else they were using) can catch some damn good fish, but it's probably not the best for dink pond fish. People don't understand pond fishing =/= lake fishing, even from shore. Senkos are still the best lure I've found for ponds.

I also don't understand why people keep using crankbaits when it just gets caught in the grass after two turns.
>>
Well that was fucked. Cycled through every single fly I had with me spending 6+ hours drifting flies and despite being able to see the trout and cast right infront of them they would even look at it and often swam away scared even if it drifted by them. I found one small pool with hundreds of trout so I sat my ass there and tried to figure out what they would eat but like I said they wouldn't eat anything. I cut the fuzz off of one fly and dug up a worm to put on it and they wouldn't even look at live night crawler. I'm confused

I just wanted to catch one brown trout :,(

I did find myself learning a lot about that stream while I was there though so I really had an enjoyable day. Weather was nice, new waders were not hot as balls and are super light. I didn't get skunked either. I found small grass perch in ankle deep water somehow and caught a few of those with little piece of nightcrawler on a shaved fly hook. Got a few pretty blue gills and white suckers too. I saw some fuck huge white suckers in there. I didn't know they got that big. They looked like a medium-small carp just sitting stationary not moving a muscle in the mud nestled up against a tree. There were piles of them, all just laying together not moving at all. If I would step near them they would scatter but after 30 seconds or so they would come right back and sit there. I tried some worms on them but they couldn't give a shit. I dangled a worm perfectly in the face of a giant one and he sucked it up but spit it back out before I could set the hook. I think it just did it out of annoyance. I saw some minnow sized largemouth bass too. Kinda weird but not that weird since the lake is maybe a mile upstream. The only bad part of the day was I managed to loose that fly box I posted earlier in response to skid. It must have floated downstream because there is no way I wouldn't have been able to find it

Wut? Google is confusing too, seems some people use that name for pumpkinseeds and others use it for smaller yellow perch.
>>
>>1080644
I'll have to get smaller ones then. Have no choice since all those flies are probably bobbing in that creek somewhere. Water felt kinda warm not really sure. Water is really shallow and crystal clear so the sun heats it up quick. I targeted the shaded areas and that's where I saw them. I stood still not moving my legs or my torso at all for 30 minutes targeting one pool where I could see at least 3 pretty big browns swimming around. When ever a fly would go past them the majority of the time they would do nothing. Other times they would swim away quick then stop somewhere close by. I had one stop almost right at my feet. I broke off a bunch of times so I varied my leader length depending on the fly I was using.

Are ultralight and panfish setups worth dropping a few hundred on? The attraction to me is the accessibility since I don't like near any inshore or prime clearwater fisheries. Is the St.Croix Panfish a good rod? I've never really heard anything bad about St. Croix rods.
>>
>>1080456
When in doubt, go smaller.
And if you can somehow snag one, cut its stomach open to see what its eating and mimic that.
>>
>>1080659
Yeah that was the first thing that came up, people refer to smaller yellow perch as grass perch but then a couple more results said it was pumpkinseeds.

>>1080661
Same as spending that money on any other spinning combo. I mentioned it earlier in this thread that you really do want a rod that works well because lots of the cheaper rods are too flimsy to get a good cast on the light baits. And St Croix is straight so I wouldn't worry about any issues as long as you're willing to spend the money.
>>
>>1080661
IMO no.

I don't like the fact that St. Croix stealth-changed their warranty from lifetime unconditional to 2-year workmanship, but the rods have always been good. I have no experience specifically with their Panfish rods beyond fingerfucking one in a store.
>>
>>1080537
Most catfish in the rivers near me are too small to take a whole fish head, so nightcrawlers and minnows are the name of the game.
>>
>>1080668
I should clarify this.

I think spending over $120 combined for a panfish rig is dumb, but I love the shit out of my Fenwick UL. Shimano would be better for UL so your rod will feel more balanced and the drag is just as smooth. You don't need the full metal body that the penn has for UL fishing. I like the shimano sahara or sedona for that price range.

sea-money fishing uses them all the time and doesn't seem to have a shortage of bites or any problems and he's landing big inshore fish. I'd say they are fine.

I dont understand why you would want to use double uni over blood. Tying a blood is literally the same thing as tying double uni, except tying double uni is more work

Both are fine since they both have better strenght than the line you tie in on. Unis wont ever cut themselves like bloods in theory might do.

That being said, ive fished +10 years using half bloods for literally everything its possible using it for. Jigs, Jerks, spinners, everything and ive never lost anything because of a weak knot. Ive switched over to unis recently just because, and i honestly cant tell the difference. Both are also fine for wacking your way out of snags and do fine when you somehow catch 5 clams and 3 rocks.

Using a blood over double uni always give you a smoother/slimmer knot, weather or not you give a shit about that is up to you. Personally i would never use a double uni instead of a blood, i cannot think of a single reason it should be better.

Also, looking online, theres aparently serveral ways of tying a bloodknot, this is the way you should do it, the other ones are retarded and doesnt make any sense

>Pike migrate to deepers waters during the summer because the water is cooler out there

>Pike migrate to the deeper waters during winter because its warmer there

Which one is it? Ive gone fishing for pike recently and i dont have access to a boat. Ive thrown everything in existence at them with no luck, i even resorted to live bait and still nothing. I think my next step is gonna be to toss live/dead bait far out and fishing the bottom with it, the only problem being that its not very easy to throw livebait very far without losing it, and also. the bait is just gonna sit in the weeds and hide out there.

How are these cheap lines?
I figure they're bad for spooling on your reel since no one really talks about them
>>
>>1080908
It's both. The water at the bottom of deep lakes will be more stable and at a constant temperature year round. If you want pike at this time of year, you'll have to find a creek with them in.
>>
>>1080893
Because I can tie a double uni in my sleep but routinely fuck up blood knots because I've used them so rarely. Guess I'll just practice it, not like I don't have access to literally free line.

>>1080708
I scored about 1200 yards of mixed mono and fluoro tippet by Sci Angler from Gander's closeouts for around $10. They'd just shipped in a bunch of the 150 yard "guide spools" and had them all priced the same because they're retarded, I have literally no excuse to not use it.

My concern with the Trilene was despite being the XT and thus stiff by Trilene standards it might've still been a little limp. But hey, free is free.

Tied one up last night, 17-->14-->10lb, would've preferred 20-->15-->10 but apparently I don't have any 20lb there. Either would work out to approximately a 3x leader. Gonna see if I have anything in the 25lb range and tie some 1x leaders for pestering pike and big bass.

Next question: 5ft or 7ft leaders for topwater or shallow-running streamers for bass?
>>
>tfw Bass Pro doesn't open til 10am
Lazy cunts. Most sports places are like 8:30am-9:30am and bait shops often open close to 5am.

I'm on the clock! I want to look for those underspin swimbait hooks or the screw lock spinners. Tryin not to buy anymore hard baits tho because of that Dick's order too. Anxious to see when that one actually shows up because the ordering page told me like 9 days and that's a long time even for economy shipping. When I ordered a rod and reel combo from them, that one came in like 4-5 days.

>>1080908
The deeper the water, the slower it changes with air temp. So late spring when it's getting warm, the shallow areas will get real warm from the sun fast and then in the fall the shallow water is going to get cold early.
>>
>>1080911
They're thick, stiff, and rarely pull their listed weight. As a result, they're generally pretty shit for general fishing use. If you need cheap line, either pay for a respool at somewhere like Dick's (2-4 cents a yard of Trilene) or buy something like Trilene Big Game.

However, they do have niche uses, such as tying your own flyfishing leaders, which are SUPPOSED to be thick and stiff because they turn flies over well.
>>
>>1080924
That's the same reason I do the uni-uni. Tie em well and they will be smooth enough.
>>
>>1080908
Both are technically true. Moving into winter the lower parts will get colder up until freezeup. Then the lake "flips" and the cold water actually rises, then freezes on the surface, so warmer on the bottom in winter and cooler on the bottom rest of the year.
>>
>>1080925
>>1080923
at what temperatures can i expect pike to return to the shallows?
>>
>>1080931
Spring. Best time to catch giants is when the ice is receding from the lake. I've seen it sometimes where the lake has thawed just enough to create a little gap of 10 or so feet of exposed water next to the shore and there were pike sitting there super shallow
>>
>>1080931
If I remember correctly, it's about 55-60 degrees fahrenheit

No underspin deals besides the tiny panfish ones. Got pic related, don't really understand how those hooks are any better than jigheads but whatever. I actually bought some 4" Yamamotos on clearance at Dick's recently and have yet to use em. But I think those little senkos might be the way to go for summer pond bass.

I need to stop spending money on this shit. On the upside those big X-Raps I got for $6.99 at Dick's are like $17 at Bass Pro. 3/4oz is gonna be pretty damn big tho.
>>
>>1080947
>3/4 x raps are too big
I use the 2oz long cast x raps and They still are too small some days.
>>
>>1080908
It's both. Deeper water stays more constant in both the winter and summer.

Idk about pike, but you can find bass shallow all through the year, except for maybe winter. As long as there's baitfish, access to deep water, and cover there should be bass.

>>
>>1080952
I have a MH spinning setup that will be perfect. And I could probably even run them for winter bass.I didn't even know how big 3/4oz was, but I believe Size 10 is 1/2oz so I knew they weren't fuckhueg. I will def try to run them in the Intercoastal a bit.

I mostly just don't have room in my tackle box for them. It's 2x 3/4oz (Size 14 I think) and one 1/4oz which is Size 6 or 8.

Beautiful crappie. Hope you catch more.
>>
>>1080947
A good man that works at my tackle shop likes those zman trd ned rigd, all he fishes lately for dem smallies.
>>
>>1080971
Ned rigs are great, just be aware that if you're fishing rock bottoms you will lose a lot of jigheads fishing the mushroom style jigheads. A stand-up shakey head works almost as well though.

SET THE HOOK ANON!
>>
>>1080982
That's why I love cheap jigs. Not only is it less money when I lose them but often you bend the cheap hooks before the line breaks.
>>
>>1080986
The mushroom jigs will actually wedge the head in/under rocks. You're not getting those back unless you can pull the rock up.

Shakeys and stand-up shakeys don't get wedged as much.
>>
>>1080958
>>1080983
One time I pulled the curtains down from my window in my sleep trying to set a hook on a peacock bass in my dream. My entire yard was flooded like 6 feet deep and there were fish everywhere and I was fishing from the roof. I live in Arkansas; there aren't even peacock bass here.
>>
>>1080982
Yeah I have some shakey heads too or I will just Texas rig em with lighter weights. It's all about the same, shakey heads and football jigs n shit never stand up as well in practice, esp when fishing from shore,

And I thought about bubblegum but I have some Trick Worms in that color and I beleve I have a pack of Yums (5"?) in that bubblegum and orange color.

>>1080986
This is also why I would rather just Texas rig it most of the time but I figured I would try one pack.

>>1080987
Half the time I run that shit on the bottom anyway, it comes up covered in that stringy algae. They had the weedless ned rigs too with the little wire but thaf's just more for the stringy shit to get caught on.

River and inshore fishing is different, but for pond fishing near me, I've found that most of the fish are extremely line shy due to high fishing pressure.
Without a snap I get over 10x the hits I did with a snap.
Your experience may be different, but for me the extra hassle of tying straight on is the difference between catching and not.

Anon, did they ship everything you ordered?

Got a shipping confirmation and they only shipped the one Yo-Zuri and not the rest of the X-Raps. When I ordered them they were all supposedly in stock but I'm sure they sold a shit ton of them considering they were like 70% off.

I wonder what will happen. If they get delayed a few days, whatever. But if they try and pull some shit and tell me 2 months or say "we're sorry, that color is discontinued and we are just going to cancel them" then I will bitch and complain until they give me 3 more $15-$20 X-Raps for $7ea.

Dicks employee here.
1. Stuff does not ship out of a warehouse, it's all "ship from store." We don't even actually have a warehouse.
2. Since it's all ship from store, that means some poor fucker has to wander around the store trying to find the proper item. If they can't, they deny the order and it gets kicked to another store further away. Since this was a huge sales weekend (baseball's going, football's going, soccer's still going, back-to-school just started, gear-up for deer season just started) stores are fucking trashed and even if the lure's physically in the store it may not be on its proper peghook and thus they can't find it
3. We are contracted with UPS, it's cheaper for us to ship with them than anyone else (a shoebox costs us about 40 cents to ship, a mailer bag with a couple crankbaits in it costs us like 2 cents to ship) due to that contract.
4. The "free shipping" option is 3-6 business days, and generally you'll have it closer to 3 days than 6 regardless what the estimate is.
>>
>>1081084

>>

Nigger it has been like an hour. And nobody here really fishes for sea trout. Quit yer bitchin.

>>
>>1080911
I wouldnt spool a rod with it, and you have to tie knots with absolute confidence, because if you half cinch them then try to really seat them they break, but if you seat them hard and suddenly, they're perfectly strong. They also turn flies over beautifully, because of how stiff it is. But again, I wouldn't spool a rod with it.
>>1080924
Dont make your butt stiffer for heavier spplicstions, just adjust your leader taper
For trout on a 9 foot leader I tie something like this
>4 feet of 20
>2 feet of 15
>18 inches of #10
>2 feet of 3x tippet
But then for a 9 foot bass leader I tie this
>5 feet of #20
>2.5 feet of #15
>2 feet of 1x or 0x tippet
I just increase the butt section to make a stronger, more aggressive leader
>>1081085
I used to work at dicks, can confirm this is true

Today was a good day. Got some time off and spent the day canoeing up the Charles River and throwing weedless rigged worms into weed patches. Got a few small largemouths like this, then drifted downstream into an area with a lot more downed timber. Saw a bunch of panfish chasing my worm so I switched over to a tiny hard bait to see if I could hook some and the biggest bass of the day swoops out of nowhere and smashes it. Also saw a Bald Eagle which is pretty rare for eastern mass.

Only place I fish is off the piers or in a kayak down on the Texas Gulf Coast by Corpus Christi Port A or even up by Matagorda Bay

>>
>>1081121
Those Mini Mites, the white body with pink head is probably my favorite. If I give up on bass and go panfishin and they won't take smaller spinners or cranks, I break out the UL and they slam that thing.
>>
>>1081025
Reel is perfectly serviceable, and far from used up. Those 70s and 80s-era Daiwas are made in Japan and incredibly reliable, if a little noisy due to all-metal parts and such.
Some fresh grease on the gears and a few drops of oil on the bail, drag and roller bearing and it'll run smoothly for another couple of decades without a hitch.

Probably did. It's why I almost never buy new rods and reels unless I can't help it.
If you're in a place where any amount of people fish regularly, they'll be all over thrift stores, pawn shops, yard sales and CL. And often just posting a notice that you're looking for some stuff gets people wanting to give you their old rods and reels for cheap or free.
