Yep, they are. I love it. I will say that the convex blade of the carpenter's hatchet makes it somewhat poor for felling and splitting, but it's great for general b*shcraft and tasks around camp. They make many other types of axes and hatches as well though, both wood and steel handled

That's the by-product of being the "knife guy" in the family. Whenever somebody finds something in their attic or basement, it always makes it's way to me. About half of those are things that've been kicking around in boxes since the 70's and got handed on to me by relatives. Not that I'm complaining tho. I got my Grampa's Old Timer for free when they're going on eBay for upwards of $80.

What is you're favorite ferro rod?

Even though a lighter is easier to use, I prefer to use a fire steel out innawoods because it's a fun challenge and it sharpens my knife's blade at the same time.

I actually researched and bought this knife, because a fellow anon was kind enough to actually post an interesting and original suggestion in a knife thread, rather than just butch about knife threads.

Bait? It makes perfect cents. You can start a fire and sharpen you're knoife at the same time!

That's the differencr between us. I'm a thinker, your just a doer. You will never get ahead in life like that.
>>
>>1077300
So I have the same model as the one between the two moras and the tango. Whatever Nip made it did a pretty good job cause I've had it for well over a decade and I love it. Little thick, but it's been a good general purpose knife
>>
>>1077451
As a /k/omrade, I can confirm. There is much screeching on /k/ over knives being viable weapons and most of us agree that they're more tool and than weapon these days.
>>
>>1078273
I like mine. I hate the handle though. Feels backwards and I just can't be arsed to go through the trouble of replacing it
>>
>>1079241
Agreed. I got mine at an antique sale for pretty cheap. The thing that I like about it is that it's designed purely as functioning knife, so most of the usual cheap knife marketing features are thankfully absent. I can get it super sharp too. Good knife.
>>
>>1079147
Yikes. The fun challenge part is true, sure. A bic lighter is durable, waterproof, and has about the same longevity, but that's too utilitarian for a fire steel enthusiast lol. But what makes it bait is that you should never use the edge of your knife, you should grind a sharp corner on the spine of the blade to strike. It definetly won't sharpen your knife, the fire steel will chew your edge up really good. It has no abrasive properties, and will not behave like a butcher steel because a ferro rod is far too soft- not to mention the difference in technique.

Depends on your intended use, I think as it came it'd have made a great butchery/hunting knife. For myself, as I mostly use my knives for woodworking, I had some micro chipping and rolling of the apex.

don't listen to the other anon, they look used but not abused. from what you can see they are clean and sharp.

its like theres a problem with using your tools and scuffing them up? its unrealistic to expect them to look like they did out of the factory even when maintained and sharpened.
>>
>>1083857
Thanks, anon. He's right about it being cheap tho. I rarely spend more than $50 on a blade except for muh swords and a couple nicer EDC items.
>>
>>1077516
Please redpill me on batonning. Is it a legit technique for a 10 day hike, provided I have a strong blade?
>>
>>1083919
It's a legit technique as long as you don't go full retard like most people do.
1. Never baton anything with a diameter larger than half the length of your blade
2. Never try to force your way through knots
3. Always use a baton of soft wood
At the end of the day, it's better to just use a hatchet, but batonning is a viable option if it comes down to it.

More of a flat/saber grind.

The choil is handy when your're skinning, and the grip has a nice balance between pretty comfy and grippy without being too hard or having hot spots.

It's a good fit for med/large hands. If you're in a Cabela's you should check one out they feel pretty good.

9/10 times though what I'll use this knife for is
food prep at camp, it's a bitchin' potato slicer.

It'll carve and feather like a dream though.

Nothing wrong with a mora, It's a great knife for the money, hell, it's a great knife PERIOD.

F.Y.I.

Anybody that wants a kit like this but wants it cheap, Smith & Wesson sells the campfire kit that's similar to what I have for less than $40 . The video reviews were a bit cringey as all the reviewers I saw had dull or toothy knives. Mine will push cut.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJND9OaE6Pc

It's not American made D2, it's Chinese 440, the grip is a tiny bit slicker with a cheapie nylon/plastic insert sheath. It's a cheap hunting set that'll do pretty much everything my KoA knives will do within reason, for less than half of what I paid for just one of my knives. They won't take the same level of abuse, the allen screws are rivets and will break if you baton them, so don't.

The biggest difference is in edge retention, but by the same token they'll also be easier to sharpen, and if you have a diamond hone and a strop it'll be easy to keep them as sharp as you need them and to touch them up in the field. Add a folding saw and you're pretty much set.

The steel, pretty much the same reason bought my KoA knives was the D2 steel and their reputation for a good heat treat on that. (it's well deserved) It was definitely the best budget "super steel" I could afford for the price. A lot of people don't like the texture of the suregrip scales or that they don't sit flush with the tang. I bought the KoA knives for the steel, I can live with the other stuff, so yeah I know what you mean.

I've since changed the grind on my Bush Camp and Cub bear to flatter steeper grinds with a very slight convexing at the apex for strength improving their cutting geometry, removing the ricassos and adding jimping for control when wet. I did that by hand with a file and cold water because I didn't want to f*ck up the heat treat. Let me tell ya' reprofiling D2 by hand even with DMT diamond hones is an all day project. It was totally worth it though.

But that really does look like white chocolate :)

A handy pro tip for the sheath since the plastic insert is likely a bit loose, a small piece of plastic either from an extra grocery discount card or a 2 liter bottle folded over and wedged into the sheath will silence and increase the retention a ton. I did the same thing for Saya on my katana and it makes a huge difference.

For instance Mors Kochanski's book is well regarded here. In his section on knifecraft he outlines what he thinks the ideal bushcraft knife should be. What you could do is make that knife with some added features a sc/out/ might like.
>>
>>1085823
I normally make prototype test knife, try it out for a while as a pattern. After that works out/make some adjustments then I make a production knife, sharpen it, test it out to make sure its all right and tight- then they go off to their owner.
If I ran off and dismembered a sheep or tree with one they probably wouldn't like that much

Generally like I mentioned, kitchen cutlery is easier to live with as a chef or butcher want 2-5 knives as a set and its actually easier to make them as a production run. When it comes to a one-off with a personal knife, that's more trouble than its worth as you're dealing with either people that either don't know what they want, or people who want something they read about once, instead of what actually works! But /out/doorsy people are generally not too bad as long as its just a specific knife (like the light fish and game knives above in O1)- skinning, filleting, utility camp knife etc.
Unlike the 'combat knife' guys who are literally weaponised autism or under some kind of delusion they'll be regularly getting into knife fights. If you're getting into fights regularly enough to need a knife, you need a change of lifestyle!

About the only advice I can give to most people who need a generic outdoor knife, keep it light, simple and with a small or no-guard for woodworking, comfortable handle, something for a lanyard strap and easy to sharpen on the go.
People often forget that most frontiersman went out with simple knives (paring, kitchen butchers knives mostly) which where maybe 3/16 or 3-4mm thick with a steel equivalent to around 1075-1084. Strong, tough and simple. So you don't need some massive lump of steel which is 6-7mm 1/4 inch thick across the spine, because its not a pry bar or a hatchet.
Plus the more you know, you don't need as much to do the same kind of job with a tool.

This wouldn't be a one off project. I am suggesting the possibility of you selling a dozen of these, or more.
You know like how /n/ has jerseys and /out/ has had patches?

Mors doesn't advocate a sharpened pry bar he describes something not far off what you just did.

In all honesty, I'd rather people make their own with a bit of help and its never been easier to do it. Not like back in the 1980s when barely anyone outside of an industrial process knew how to even temper steel, most blacksmiths where dead and buried, there was esoteric historical stuff buried in books in the back of the library and everything had to be done by scratch or experimentation. Most of what I learned back then was from a grandparent and father who was a mechanic and machinist, who where literally some of the very few people around at the time who actually knew how to work with steel.

Theres 1000's of youtube vids, blogs, knife forums, dedicated shops, steel specialists etc which all have valid information on them. A metre or 3ft of 3mm or 3/16ths thick 1075 steel will cost you about $25 delivered to your door, do some stock removal, blowtorch and vegie oil will harden it, you can temper it in a home electric oven. That way people can learn the act of actually making things with their hands to their own requirements, plus learning something like that means you've added something to your survival skill repertoire

Got this little fucker for a $50 steal off amazon about 4 years ago. Full value is about $150. I use it while I'm out guiding for pretty much everything. It's so easy to sharpen and dulls really slowly. I love my griptillian so goddamn much.

>It can't be a a.flat grind and sabre.

A saber grind is a flat grind that doesn't go all the way up the blade, loosely still called a flat grind by some of us idjits where we call a flat grind a full flat grind. But I totally get what you're saying.

From the factory the Knives of Alaska Bush Camp comes with a saber grind and a secondary edge bevel which from some angle does look a lot like a hollow grind, but it isn't.

I took mine which cut just fine with the factory grind and reprofiled it to change the seconday bevel to a steep convex at the apex and remove the shoulder of the secondary bevel flattening it to the primary grind so that it cuts even better, though it came hair shaving sharp from the factory and never really dulled as it was maintained by light stropping now and then.

The difference is that before when slicing an apple or potato it felt more like splitting wood than slicing it, now slices through much cleaner and still carves into wood beautifully.
>>
Guys, is it normal that stropping a knife usually gives me an erection?

V-42: good choice for boar hunting, very stabby.

Peacekeeper II, also stabby and slicy. If you like that kind of thing. I do.

Neither are very good batonny choppy chop choppers though :( but very good for kebabing skinwalkers, bears and pigs.

really it comes down to 440c vs 12c27 but i don't know too much about 12c27 to know if it's worth it

My friend bought one of those Ganzos a while ago and I got to fiddle around with it. That thing opens up smooth as butter and it locks up like a bank vault. He prefers to carry an Opinel as his main folder, but he says that the edge retention is pretty good and it sharpens up nice as well. I'd get the Ganzo if I were you.
>>
>>1091439
both are okay for the price, although ganzo has a better offer in terms of different designs and parts. I wouldnt trust chinese claiming to make 440c, more like some funky 440c-like alloy. Ganzo definitely isnt 440c, at least not the ones I bought. that being said, they're actually quite good bang for buck.

Last year i got a sanremu sebenza-like shaped for 7€ and a Ganzo rat-like (g727m)shaped for 10€. They are OK, better than opinel worst than victorinox, after 1 year of /out/ activities I got some scrapes over blade but it's OK for a 10€ knife.

>>1091627
china 440 c isnt usually real 440 c
atleast with ontario you get a company that will do waruntee stuff if anythng goes wrong
>>
>>1091627
There's a d2 version of the rat 1 too. More expensive, but still very affordable.

>>1091439
To buy chinese knives I suggest fasttech, dhgate or gearbest; 32 Canadian dollars looks expensive

Easy to maintain and actually not that shiny.
>>
Kansbol is one of the best options for the price. Great sheath, good stainless steel (low maintenance and tough), comfortable handle with neutral grip, lightweight, sharp spine for scraping and fire steel, differential grind with precision tip. The only negatives are Scandinavian grind and not full tang.
