can someone tell me of a good rod+reel for $150-200 mostly for pulling in sharks/rays/general big inshore fish?

got into a fight with a very good sized red, couldn't get him anywhere near the railing and seriously thought my old 6'6 garcia was going to break in half.

it's california no one really gives a fuck.
If you knew the laws around stand your ground you would realize most states have something similar, just not the same as for example Florida.
If someone is feeling endangered you dont have to retreat and can use deadly force.
If someone is just taking your stuff you cant use deadly force.

>>
>>1075775
Eels?
Yes they do. They're a tube of solid muscle, after all. They just fight differently than almost anything else. Very wiggly and thrashy.
Also, if you thought spinning reels gave you problematic amounts of line twist, you have never caught an eel. It was like hooking up to a handheld mixer beater. My leader was so twisted and full of compacted knots it took 5 minutes to straighten back out. .

Easier to foul hook, takes longer and is harder to unhook. Results in more guthooked fish, more fishermen just cutting the hook off and more fish dying because they were hooked.

>>
>>1076122
If you hold the rod at the tip you're forcing it to bend in a much smaller spot as opposed to bending along the whole length it was designed to. I could definitely see that stressing the rod and causing some hairline fractures.

Not saying that's what happened 100% but it's something to keep in mind.

At least in my store, every day's a shitshow. We're slammed basically from the second the doors open til we're kicking the last dozen people out 20 minutes after we were supposed to actually close. We're understaffed because we don't pay well (less than entry-level fast food) and can't keep employees very long so it's a small cadre of us experienced folk running herd on new people that don't know where anything is.

I'm the lodge department (fishing, camping, hunting, sport shooting, paddle sports, outdoor games) lead. I'm expected to, by myself, run a quarter of the store and perform ALL services in the store.
Lodge services:
>respool and do basic repair/maintenance on fishing reels
>mount and boresight firearms
>do basic gunsmithing (I am an actual, school-trained, degree-holding gunsmith)
>build bows and crossbows and prep them for sale
>tune and repair customer bows and crossbows
Team sports services:
>size and drill bowling balls
>re string tennis, badminton, and racquetball racquets
>re string lacrosse heads
>steam and break in baseball/softball gloves
>replace cleats on football/baseball/softball/track cleats
Bike services:
>build and tune bikes for sale
>repair and tune customer bikes
Golf services:
>fit clubs
>analyze golf swings in the hitting bay
>cut down or extend clubs to fit
>regrip clubs
>adjust loft, lie, toe-in or toe-out, and head weight of clubs
>repair custmer's damaged or broken clubs or facilitate warranty repairs through the manufacturer
All for $11.47 an hour in a county with $10 minimum wage. And I've been with the store 2.5 years.
>>
>>1076136
you're a gunsmith working for anything under 16/hr and that's your own damn fault then. You and the rest of the seniors aren't helping anybody by staying there longer than you should. You said it yourself. It's an entry level job. Work there for 6 months. And move up somewhere else...
>>
>>1076136
That kinda sucks. Almost all retail jobs like that are going to be near minimum wage, but it seems like they could do a little better on pay considering you're a "specialist" and do more besides telling people "Aisle 6 on the left!"

Also the Dick's I deliver to, there's always like 10 employees walking around the front and only one cashier dealing with the person returning 5 shirts that didn't fit while 7 more people are waiting in line.

>>1076122
Sounds like you fucked up somehow. Tell them a fish broke it and hopefully they will help you out. If the guides aren't all smashed in, maybe they will believe you.
>>
>>1076136
>stringing lacrosse heads
You must be in Maryland. I just got hired at Dick's (PA) and I'm only making $8.50 an hour
>>
>>1076147
It's a retirement job for me. I'm retired Army. I work there part-time for the benefits and the ability to take weeks off at once, and other than it being frustrating it's a good fit for me. I don't particularly care all that much about the low pay.

>>1076149
If we have 10 employees in the entire store on anything but a Saturday morning it's a goddamn miracle.

We have an actual bike tech (who supposedly gets paid better than the actual department managers) but due to Corporate fucking with our payroll they only schedule him like 2 shifts a week. Same with golf. We have an actual PGA prostaffer, but he only works 3 days a week.
>>
>>1076152
Missouri. St. Louis to be precise.

It's big here for reasons I don't understand.

There's 3 Dicks in STL, the one outside of St. Louis City Limits starts people at state minimum wage ($7.65 an hour) unless they're a golf pro. They're even more understaffed than we are.
>>
You guys should all go Makerel fishing sometime. It was a lot of fun. They bleed a lot tho.
>>
>>1075881
>>1076001
Thanks. That's not good, it is so easy to lose them; I don't like the idea that I'm littering the water.
>>
>>1076157
Seriously? I'm 20 minutes from the Maryland line and none of the Dick's stores in my county offer stringing
>>
>>1076165
Idk man. I think it depends on the bait. I believe Gulp breaks down really fast. And one time I was using one of the Strike King KVD shads and snagged it and about 2 weeks later I hooked it. When I pulled it in, you could def tell the plastic was starting to degrade and I could feel some of the little glitter bits because the plastic around it was wearing away.

Thats why I join river cleanups. Pull a few tires and you've neutralized what you've snagged into the water. I just do them now because it's nice to help and spend time with the people that also volunteer.
Ill always pick up or pull out any fishing line too, that is the worse kind of litter since they act as traps to wildlife.
>>
>>1075765
I don't think they taste good and I have seen it posted in these threads many times. It's a matter of opinion and the popular one seems to be that they taste like mud regardless of what you think.

>>1076187
Even if they don't break down I don't think it really matters much because they'll just be covered with silt and become part of the lake bottom. You should also be removing damaged baits from your hook anyways so a bluegill can't bump it once and make it come off which takes care of like 99% of lost plastics.
>>
>>1076187
I know that gulp will shrink but I dont think it actually degrades into nothing. Just the material condensing down, and sometimes it will break apart.
>>
>>1076038

>>1076206
Just saying if you stepped on it or slammed it in the car door and then try to send it back and say it broke while you were fishing, they would probably see the smashed guides and tell you to fuck off. But if they're in good condition you have a better chance of claiming it wasn't user error.

A little bony because they were big, but they are easily on par with trout.
Scaled and fried in butter with the skin on, seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic powder. As soon as the ribs can be scraped out of the meat, they're done.
The big secret is to put them on ice as soon as you catch them. That way they don't start to spoil.

Found a new fly fishing store. Went in for bugger parts. Place is AWESOME. I asked advice on which chenille to get (they had about 3 dozen different brands and 2-3 sizes in each brand, was kinda overwhelming) so the guy whipped out a vise and tied up a fistful of them to show me the differences in each material. Then he let me try on his vise with his mats. Then he GAVE me the flies. Like, 8 free buggers.

This is one of the ones I tied while there. Best bugger I've ever tied.

That haul was with a fella and i who wanted to do a quick cleanup. We just load his truck bed up and he gives them to either the county or some tire company to properly dispose of, usually for free but they are supposed to charge you for the disposal of it.
For bigger clean up events the county just handles it. We got a few trucks or canoes to haul them to a spot and at the end of the day the county deals with it

Also, it's really hard to beat old Penn Z reels for surf fishing. Get a 710z for a 9' rod, 704z for a 10' and 706z for 11'. They're durable as hell and super easy to maintain. If you drop it in the sand, you can fully take it apart on a towel in under 15 minutes with nothing but a penny and fishing pliers. most of them come with good HT-100 drag washers but some have leather ones, replace the drag if you get one of those.

I also use the tiny 712z for small swimbaits for bass and skishing for snook. It gets dunked in saltwater a lot. The entire reel is made of aluminum, marine grade brass and stainless steel so it doesn't rust very easily.

That's basically the case with every decent quality fishing reel ever made since the dawn of time. They're so fucking simple it's a wonder they can convince people to pay $200+ for new ones.
And with basic maintenance they'll last for decades, even centuries.
Unless a reel got dropped in the ocean and you can't get it out, rolled over by a car, worked on by an idiot, or used literally every single day for years on end by a professional fisherman, it's a pretty safe bet that it'll still be solid.

Anyone here know anything about old orvis fly rods? Just had this one given to me. The cork grip is best to shit and the label as you can see looks like someone with bad hand writing wrote it on with a gold marker. Any way to determine what weight line it will need? The label is the only marking on the rod
>>
>>1076695
>half-Wells grip
It's no heavier than a 6 weight, pretty much nobody has ever made a 7wt+ rod with anything other than a full Wells grip. I'd throw a 5wt line and reel on it and call it good.

Grip looks fine to me, I'd hardly call that "beat to shit" from what I can see of it.

I don't see many modern fishing reels lasting forever unlike something from the 70's and older. Many modern "high quality" $100+ reels are made in China and probably won't last over 3 years. You'd be daft to not see things have gone down in quality

I rescind my previous statement. In fact, both of them. That's not even a half-Wells, I don't know what the fuck that is. That might have been a handmade Orvis, and is probably even lighter than a 5wt.

Yeah they're designed to be super limp for very precise, close-range casting on streams narrow enough to step over.

It's probably a 2 or 3 weight rod. They never made the Powerflex series very heavy.

Panther Martins are solid. For bass, start out with a Z-Man Chatterbait, 3/0 Gamakatsu offset round bend hooks, and Zoom Baby Brush Hogs. Colors could be black, white, green pumpkin, or chartreuse. Not a single body of water has fish that won't take those colors

You can't beat the perfection that is the X-Rapâ„¢.

I have 2 of those lipless Yo-Zuri ratl'n vibe's, one in gold and the other in a bluegill pattern. I was fishing the gold one side by side with a buddy throwing a gold rat-l-trap and he got skunked while I caught 3 two pounders. You won't be disappointing. The only thing is that the paint flakes off kind of easily like most gold or chrome lures.

Depends. Do you like the idea of direct drive reels with no free spool or drag?
There are pluses to that-the spinning handle acts like a centrifugal spool brake-but also some very obvious minuses. They're not called "knuckle busters" for nothing, after all.

I actually have a couple of those Skilkast reels and fish with them. As old reels go they work pretty well, but they're not modern. That model does have an early anti-backlash adjustment on the left spool tension knob. Get it set right and it'll be pretty good, but it's still no match for a well-trained thumb.

If that reel has a two-piece cork arbor cover, use it. It's meant for using the reel with mono lines (vs the thicker Dacron braid they were originally designed for), you'll get easier casting and fewer tiny wraps of mono awfulness with it on there. If it doesn't, leave the old line at about the half-spool level and tie your new line onto that.
The spindle covers have oil holes. Use them-it matters. Also oil your level wind and put a drop or two in the tiny hole in the center of the nut that holds your handle on. Do that and that reel will come alive again.

>>1076915

No doubt, but people get all excited because they can legally shoot things again, so it's a brand new reason for people to open their wallets.
Fishing's not fresh in people's minds like it was in the spring, and lots of people already have their tackle boxes full for the year.

I forgot to mention, the weird handle on your reel pic is a Cub handle, and it's a sort of primitive drag system. The drag plates surround the main shaft and are secured by the screws that also set the drag tension.
If it hasn't been maintained in a while (protip: it hasn't) you'll want to unscrew everything, clean and re-oil all the washers and plates, then reassemble. Just be sure to tighten the screws evenly and test your drag often to see if it's set how you like it. Because once it's done, resetting it on the fly is next to impossible.
>>
>>1077003
Cool thanks. So what kind of fishing is this meant for then? Is it just a primitive bait caster? Now I'm on the fence about buying it because if it is I might just sell my black max
>>

>>
>>1077008
My solution was to stop bass fishing until the weeds die down
>>
>>1077008
Senkos/fluke weightless and push the eye of the hook all the way into the plastic.
>>
>>1077007
Yes, it's a primitive baitcaster, meant for all of the regular baitcaster-y things.
It's got a 4:1 ratio which is slow compared to modern reels, but I find that a moderate retrieve is just right for getting optimal action out of older-design lures like Zara spooks, jitterbugs, crazy crawlers, topwater poppers, spoons, rapala and rebel minnows, crankbaits and spinners. I can walk a Zara spook across a lake effortlessly with these reels-just twitch as you crank. It's much easier than a spinning reel.

I'd hold off on selling your black Max for a little while until you've used it and are sure you like the older reel better. It works pretty well for what it is, but the feel is definitely different and there is a bit of trial and error in getting it set up. You also might not like it as much as what you've already got.

You just have to fish more. You'll start to see the differences. Even after you can reliably tell the difference between bites and cover/rocks/debries you'll still get fooled every once in awhile.

Also, watch your line. When a fish bites, the line will usually jump then start moving in a direction it shouldn't be.

You should start off with a medium rod 7-8 ft.

Have some carolina rig set up with 1/4-1/2 oz with #8 hook for sand crabs if you find any, gulp sand worm, or a 3 inch perch grub for perch, croaker, corbina

You can catch sand bass, halibut, and big croaker with around 3/8-3/4 oz spoon like kastmaster/kroc, 3-4 inches swimbait, zoom superfluke, or lucky craft flashminnow. Lucky craft flashminnow is an expensive $18 crankbait but it's top quality jap shit and local popular lure on the beach that works in many condition for multiple species.

What city are you at?
>>

I'm in Anaheim. Newport is where I usually go just to hang around, but I've never fished there.
>>
>>1077090
>>1077090
Give it a try

Fish near rocky structure or find a deepest trough you can find on the beach and along there. A trough is where you see a deep drop off then there is a shallow sand bar ahead. Any deep drop off is usually good anyway. Always take some lure in case you can't find sand crab or mussel.

I fish mostly in sunset/bolsa chica. You can try out Newport and see how it is.

I'd buy a motherfucking sailboat on a trailer. I'd get it registered, fixed up and put on new ropes and sails.
And that's probably about all I could do, because owning a sailboat is almost as satisfying as putting your cash into a big pile and lighting it on fire.

You can always buy a couple 3600 or 3700 flat boxes and carry them with whatever backpack you have. Like $10 for two boxes, maybe less. Or get an actual tackle bag on sale. Even the cheaper brands, like Dick's Jawbone will be $20-$30 for a 3600 or 3700 size bag that will come with a couple flat boxes in it and will hold 2-3 more.

Or there's fishing backpacks. Bought my lil bro a Browning one from Bass Pro. They are a little more expensive, I think that one was around $75. But they are nice, it holds 4x3600 flat boxes in the bottom then has a bunch of pockets and shit that just make sense and work well.

FYI 3600 is like medium size and 3700 is large.

And those boxes you have now will work fine, but the bags or backpacks are much easier to carry around, organize your shit better and keep tackle from getting tangled so bad, and you don't have to worry about them opening because the latches failed.

Good to know. Idk if I have any X-Raps in this color, but that was a Clackin Rap in the pic and I know I have a Husky Jerk in Clown too. I'm always enticed by them because some days chartruese is irresistable, but then buy something else because I don't really have luck with them. "Gold" is still my favorite X-Rap color.

No snook for me yet, but I still seem to get the most hits on soft baits when I'm doing salt. Stopped by the intercoastal for like half an hour today and got one hit on a Keitech (ladyfish or little jack probably) but that was it. They don't like to hit the hard bodied jerkbaits as much for some reason.

Still was suprised when Anon Don Juan told me he was getting snook like 10 or 15mi inland on these canals. Snook in the same place as peacocks and largemouth. It would be GOAT if it weren't overfished by minorities. Pic related.

Btw for snookfegs, how big are you guys going for jerkbaits and shit? I've been running stuff like 3"-4", but that's also because I would rather get little jacks and no snook instead of getting skunked.

For smaller or medium canal and intercoastal snook, should I be going bigger to get more attention? Lots of Size 10 Rapalas which is about 4" but I do have some larger Gambler soft swimbaits that I could try. Those ones run on like a 5/0 or 6/0 swimbait hook.

You gotta call West Marine first, maybe it's only in my area since they didn't sell too well. They have one in an electric chicken color, might get it for spillway snook.

>>1077579
>Btw for snookfegs, how big are you guys going for jerkbaits and shit? I've been running stuff like 3"-4"

Snook really like to key in on size, look around and find out what bait is in the area and match that. I've seen someone catch a huge mother snook on a little mirrodine and I personally have caught tiny snook on 9 inch spoolteks so don't be afraid to go really big or really small. It's the summer time so they will probably be keyed in on bigger bait in your area, size 12 or 14 x-rap is perfect. As for color, white works really good on the beach and darker colors like gold or chartreuse work good is spillways or brackish water.

>I don't want to get skunked
Jacks are really aggressive, they'll hit lures nearly their size.

>For smaller or medium canal and intercoastal snook, should I be going bigger to get more attention?
Try to find out what bait is in the area and match the size. I lost a good snook at the pier on a huge mojarra that I was almost certain even a mother snook wouldn't be able to fit in her mouth but it did. These fuckers will swallow foot long ladyfish or mullet like nothing so don't be afraid to throw huge gamblers or swing impact fats if you see big bait in the area.

It has the markings like a green sunfish, but they're very very subtle. I've always seen them relatively bright not, subdued like that. Probably a hybrid.
>>
>>1077655
Could be a longear/greenie hybrid I suppose. The "ear" is way too long and pointed, and it's way too light colored to be a full blooded greenie.

But yes, the electric blue on the cheeks is inconsistent with a full blooded longear too.

Green sunfish would have different pectoral fins actually, probably a longer.

Definitely. I don't know enough about the other species of sunfish to really make any other guesses.

On the note of panfish, does anyone know of one that's really light on the front end and striped on the back? I've been seeing these in the creeks in the hill country, but I haven't been able to catch one. In the water they look almost white and black.

Definitely not. It has the same body as a regular sunfish, and the color split is along the vertical axis of its body.

Come to think of it, I've only seen them in the pedernales river. Maybe it's a mutation exclusive to that river and it's shoot offs? Next time I go I'm definitely bringing the fly rod.

Question about pike/walleye fishing.

I recently moved to northern Saskatchewan and have done a couple days of fishing up here. I have almost zero fishing experience prior to this.

I have a collection of basic spinner rods rigged with 8lb monofil line that my friends and I shared - all basically the same setup. Using a few different spinners, we were able to catch a few pike around 5lb or less, but whenever anything significantly bigger/stronger got hooked we lost it (we lost a few 10lb+ pike). A couple were from hooks pulling out, and a few from snapped lines. We always used leaders so cut line shouldn't have been the issue.

Are we just doing something wrong when it comes to fighting the fish (eg. should I relax the drag, spend more time allowing the fish to move and tire out?) or should I look into getting a beefier setup like a baitcaster or even just a stronger spinner+braided line?
>>
>>1077725
>are we just doing something wrong?
Most likely

In order of priority:
>make sure the line isn't old and UV-degraded
If it's more than 3 years old but spent most of that time sitting in the shed/basement/garage, respool. If it's more than 1 year old but spend most of that time outside, respool. If it's more than 6 months old and has been used a lot, respool.
>drag
There's no solid consensus on what exactly your drag should be set at, but a general guideline is 50% of your line's rated strength if you're using an improved clinch or palomar knot for your lure, or 60% of your knot strength if you're using any other knot (don't do this, use a palomar). Cheap reels (Shakespeares, Zebcos, any spinning reel under $30, any spincasting reel regardless of price) have inconsistent drags and are not to be trusted and you would do well to go even lighter on drag.
>time fighting
The shorter the better. If this requires heavier line or a stouter rod, so be it. Yes, in theory, you can play a fish a long time on very light line, but specifically for pike the odds of it breaking you off on shit in the water is pretty high as is and goes up rapidly if you fight it a long time.
>style of fighting
Keep pulling on the fish at least a little, never let it go slack, as that leads to spit hooks or fish getting turned around backwards and getting your line cut above the leader on gill covers or dorsal spines. If the fish jumps, drop your rod tip down and away from the fish to pull his head down while keeping pressure on him.

My line is new as of a week ago, and personally I didn't have any line snap with my setup, but I did also hook some fish that I wasn't able to reel in.

If I feel like there are still problems then I will reassess and considering picking up some beefier gear.
>>
>>1077748
8lb line on a ML or medium rod is just fine for walleye, perch, and dink pike, but if you're targeting pike specifically you might want to step up.
>>
I recently came into some fishing gear and with it was a couple memecaster reels, there was a daiwa sp1000 and a pflueger templar, are these any good? And does anyone have recommendations for some decent but cheaper rods to go with these?
>>
>>1077752
Yes, both of those are decent.

If you have a Dick's nearby, go buy a F&S Tech Spec Elite 7' medium. They're on clearance for $40 and are pretty good. Otherwise, try to find somewhere that has the Abu Veritas 2's on sale, should be able to get them for $60. They're *slightly* better than the F&S rods, but not $20 better.

Yes they are, but panfish LOVE them, as do larger fish like bass (pic related). I've caught 8 fish in half an hour before on them. They make my UL rig go.

I also firmly believe that it is better to be catching fish than not. Get to where you're consistently catching fish-even if they're dinks-and the big fish will come. At least then you know what you're doing is effective.

On the flip side, I have NEVER caught anything on a beetle spin. I don't even know if I'm doing anything wrong with them.

Question for people that fish fresh and salt-

Does the weather and pressure make a big difference with salt? You always hear about seasons and tide, but not weather as much. It has been rainy all day and feels like it cooled off a couple degrees so I'm not sure if I should hit some freshwater today.
>>
>>1078245
I just don't trust such a small lure for hooking big LMB. My little bro was using a 1/8oz Rooster Tail awhile back and landed a bass that must have been near 5lbs and I was suprised he got the thing in. I'm always down with finesse fishing, but I don't like targeting bass with any inlines smaller than 1/4oz because of the hook size.
>>
>>1078249
>tfw have landed 15lb carp on #16 scud hooks
I can fit three of them on my thumbnail and have thumbnail left over. The hooks on a Rooster Tail are fine.
>>
>>1078246
Tide is literally the most important thing when saltwater fishing. I have never caught bass in the middle of the day but I can crush bluefish for a solid hour in the middle of the day if it's almost high tide. The peak fishing times are an 1-2 hours before a tide change.
>>
>>1078246
It's a whole different game. They aren't like bass where they turn off after it rains.
>>
>>1078259
>carp
>head shakes and jumps

Pick one my friend.

That being said I've caught decent bass on those little spinners just fine, but it's definitely easier to lose fish.
>>
>>1078259
Carp are different than bass. Catfish too. Like with snakeheads, I have no problem going for 18"+ sneks with a #1 or #2 Mepps. But with LMB, so much of the area around their mouth is that thin layer of skin.

>>1078263
Interesting. The one day I actually had luck and was getting those little jacks on the intercoastal, it was about 6pm and the tide was pretty low. Went twice after that with higher tide and didn't get shit.

>>1078268
That's what I figured. And with bass it doesn't seem like it's even about the rain since I can go out right before an afternoon thunderstorm almost every day here and it doesn't necessarily mean good fishing. But if there's a T-storm coming with a cold front, the hour before that storm will normally be great and then the next 2 days of cooler weather will be shitty. And sometimes the cold front hits without rain and the bass will hit good if I get out there right as the temp drops a degree or two.

>>1078271
+1.

I was thinking tho the tiny hooks on the 1/16oz might almost be better than a 1/8oz or 1/6oz because the gap is so small that you have a decent chance of hitting that ~1/4" of thicker skin on the edge or their top or bottom lip.
>>
>>1078278
Really depends on the area and the fish when it comes to tide. For example the spillway near me only produces on high tide and I can't catch shit on low tide.
>>
>>1078249
One of my two PB 5-1/2lb largemouths was caught on a 1/8oz rooster tail and drug through weed beds on 4lb test.
The hooks-and the line, and the knot-held.
That pic above was a 3lb fish. So it can be done. All you have to do is all the things you should do anyway when you've got a fish on the line and not be afraid.
>>
>>1078286
I never really read into it much aside from when I researched fishing the inlet a bit. It said something like rising tide and fish on the inside of the inlet, falling tide and go outside the inlet because baitfish will be following the flow of water and predators will be waiting for them to get funneled thru. But I hate watching the clock with tide since I'm gonna go fishin when I want to go fishin.

It just works out well for bass and freshwater since I normally have time to fish right around dusk.
>>
>>1078319
It affects predator fish more than scavengers and like all fishing you will still have your random outlier. Think of it this way your tide change is like a front. You know you will have good fishing around that time. The key is to know where to go and when.

I know this does not help you because it is not your style but for me...
>Get out early before others show up
>Great spot that I know fish will run each tide change
>Set up cooler, chair, speaker, rod holders
>Nigger spread the shit of my spot so I have room to fish
>Get drunk and soak bait till the fish start moving through
>Pull up poles in front of me but leave side poles
>Cast lures in my open spot till the run stops
>Drink and wait for next run

>>
>>1078278
ah, yeah, hadn't considered the skin tearing around it, thought you were just talking about the hooks pulling straight.

I've only had that happen with Mustad hooks and Eagle Claw #6 or smaller aberdeens. Needless to say I don't use Mustad or Eagle Claw any more.
>>
>>1078370
>the way you cast
That's what took me a long time to realize and I try to emphasize when I tell people how to use their new memecaster. Once you get the cast down, then you can really back off the brakes and tension and start launching lighter baits. These days I just leave the spool tension really low and turn the brakes up a bit if I'm casting into the wind.

And now I regret saying I will work this Sunday. Oh well I still have the gun range then BBQ in Lockhart followed buy fishing in Pedernales on Saturday.

So, coming from a baitcasting noob, what does the correct casting style look/feel like?
>>
>>1078391
Less snappy/jerky than with a spinning rod.
>>
>>1078391
It takes practice to get it down right. But you want to throw it flat, baitcasters don't like when you lob baits at a 45deg+ angle. Also it seems like it works better if you use your wrist more, sorta throw the bait using just the rod tip, not using your whole arm and moving the entire rod and reel. That's also why it's nice to get light and balanced rods with baitcasters.

And keep practicing until you figure it out. I think I owned my first one for close to a year and barely used it, then bought my second one and didn't really use that for another 6mos until I forced myself to use them and I got the casting motion down. Brakes and tension set high to start and use a heavy and dense lure for the smallest chances of backlashes. Rat-L-Traps or other sinking lipless cranks and heavy jigs both work well to start.

Watch videos of pros doing it. The key thing is to be smooth. Once you get a good smooth cast then start speeding it up.

Anyone know where 13 Fishing makes their stuff? I'm trying to buy American if possible and want to know if they're what I'm looking for. I know they advertise Japanese parts but I'm wondering if any of the production process is done on US soil

This looks kinda cool. Says it comes with 2 large (3700?) and one med (3600?) boxes. Maybe a little smaller than the full backpack,

There are lots of vests and fanny packs and ass packs on sale right now and some of them look like they could be useful but I just could never wear one of those around.

Savage gear basically has an ad on /r/fishing with lake trout "definitely just got caught on these lures"

Sponsored through some guide who already spams his service

Anyone else Happy Gilmore their casts when you try and bomb lures? It's honestly one of the only ways I cast a frog. The more water I can cover the more success I have. Only problem is I'm able to max out on distance with that curado. The #40 braid is certainly hurting my distance but idk what else it could be. I keep all extra brakes other than the centrifugal ones off and my spool tension as loose as you can appropriately make it. Still not getting the distance I know I am capable of

For soaking bait it's fine. Also a good rod for gotcha plugs w/ braided line, the soft tip really Helps absorb a 6 pound spanish mackerel slamming your bait with #10 braid

>#25 mono leader
>dropper loops, however many you can be bothered to tie
>4 oz weight on the bottom
> short length of #14 mono on the dropper loops
>#4 circle hook on each length of #14 mono
>fishbites on each hook
You cant fuck this up, trust me.

Nice to see the normies side of fishing. Occasionally good arguments in the comments and good and committed anglers.

It's shit Pepsi. The boxes it comes with aren't true standardized 3600/3700 sizes, they're slightly smaller, and a real deal Plano 3700 is a really tight fit. You're not getting 3 of them in there and 2 will occasionally get stuck.

Also the sewing is subpar and it will fall apart on you in a season or two.

Im just getting to that point of lowering the tension and easing of the brakes, and besides that it doesn't take that long to get out a birdsnest. It's way more proficient to use a memecaster when going after bass and fishing higher covered areas where the accuracy of every cast counts.
>>
>>1078391
From the side and slow, unlike a open face reel where you cast from behind you, watch 1rod1reel's technique, I literally learned from studying his videos and practicing
>>
>>1075744
what the fuck is a memecaster?
>>
>>1077070
Raise your rod tip to keep up line tension when in doubt. If its trying to swim the other way, its usually a fish. I find that fish always slam the jig full tilt, i dont think ive ever had a strike on a jig that resulted in the fish spitting out the jig again, your jigging motion and the way the fish goes full force in the strike should literally always result in a properly hooked fish, if you keep losing fish anyway, sharpen your hooks or maybe think about using slightly smaller ones.

Unless its like pike or some other large fish, in that case use an offset treble or something
