I used to stack little cairns but I'm taking a liking to giving them the boot. There's one stacked on a boulder along the highway I commute under a road cut, just waiting on the right time of day to be able to park and demolish it.

Either keep it small and restore the site after (drown it, toss rocks, scrub scorch with boot) or use a camp stove.

Honestly? Having had it both ways I find a little alcohol stove way more comfy than a big fire. I love that nice blue flame.
You could also use a wood gas stove or other wood stove variety, a lot of which can be DIY safely.

Just got back from the UP for a week up at my cabin in the middle of the woods 10 miles outside of a small ass town near the pictured rocks area.
