I know that free bruh. Was just biking around my hilly rural town for funkeks and decided to take the road down to the ol' summer camp. Holy fuck it starts out ok on the way up, but pretty soon it's basically a steep downhill bouldery riverbed that's eroded into a loosely stable canyon. Almost fukken died.
>>1063124
NH here, how is Katahdin? I'm considering a week long hiking trip in ME but it's a big time investment to get up there.

Montreal here, I drove 7.5 hours just to get there. It was worth every minutes. I would suggest starting at the abol camp ground ans using the abol trail. The knife edge is epic, but it looks scarier than it is actually walking on it.
The abol trail was redirected about 2 years ago after a slide occured and destroyed the Original path, starting a bit before actually getting to the slide. The maps still shows the Original path and you can still hike it. The now closed path is a steep and direct line to the top and is way more fun than the redirected path. Most rocks are unstable but if you are not reckless during the ascent on the forbidden path your ascent will be half the fun of your hike.
went hiking on the tail of the dragon it was fun, Im planning to take this style pic in every state I travel to.

The only /out/ I've done all year was a short jaunt to a local alpine lake that you drive to, wife and I took our nephew.
My activity has suffered a lot the last three years. 2 years ago I bought a $1400 mountain bike to replace my Trek. Haven't ridden it more than 8 times since.
My backpacking setup has been on three backpacking overnighters.
Learned to rock climb this spring, have around $200 or so in to it. I didn't go to the last day of climbing because social anxiety is a bitch. Went once with a friend for a morning and we hit a rock gym this week for a couple hours.
I tried to find a local roadside crag to boulder a bit but got frustrated and came home. There is open climbing a bit south of me with a mountaineering club I "joined" around 5 tonight, but I'm pretty much just laying here on the couch staring at the wall.
What happened to me? Why am I like this now?
It's all so bleak and empty. There's just this crushing depression always somewhere in the background. It's July and I've done nothing. No /out/, no house projects finished. Another summer fucking wasted.
I wish I'd just get hit crossing the street or something. Fast enough to be instant, you know?

Here the type of rock is called "ruffe", as far as I know it's loaded with iron so over the years the soil kind of rusts.
The lake and the area around is mostly rocky hills with the occasional vineyards and village so civilization is never far but when the sun is up like it was earlier it gets very pretty
Also one of the few places here were scorpions are fairly common

I have a slightly off-topic question. I and my mates headed out into the woods last week, on foot, and followed this river far up until we came upon a nice creek with a small bouldering waterfall and rushing fresh water. Now it looked resonably clean, not too much foam, not too much greens and algae on the rocks. We had a blast fighting the current and swimming, and even though one guy fell down, he was fine. But how can you be sure a parasite won't crawl up your dick and destroy your innards? Industrial grade waste and poisons? It always creeps me the fuck out. I try real hard not to be a germophobe, which is why i go >>>/out/ to face my fears, but sometimes I just need reassurance.
>>1067124
Wash your hands before eating and boil, filter or chemically treat your drinking water. If you're in the US getting anything is exceptionally rare. Obviously don't drink runoff from industrial sites and mines, but your typical stream in the woods isn't going to contain dangerous levels of any heavy metals or other chemicals.
My latest trip /out/ was justto grab sonething out of my car. Even in this short time beneath the stars I managed to encounter a new form of wildlife! I called in the dog when I reached the door and my heart skipped a beat when from the opposite direction of my dog I heard a reply.
I had made a brief whistling sound that could probably be heard from 50 yards. Not even two seconds passed before a similar whisle sounded. The response was then repeated in rapid succesion for a full baker's dozen of these whistles. Then there was silence. Testing the source and again calling the surely confused dog, I made the whistle again. I was immediately answered by a single whistle, just like my own.
Doge runs up.

Skinwalkers? I certainly hope not.
I was thinking maybe an owl/nocturnal magpie or ferral parrot.

Will dump some photos here. This first one is on a hike to Grinnell Glacier, coming in from the East side of the park (Many Glacier area). I highly highly highly recommend this hike if you're in Glacier and not doing backcountry, IMHO it's better than even the Highline Trail.

The GR 10 is the same thing but on the French side
Took it a couple days ago in the woods of Bourgogne, eastern France
>>1071275
Yep the other anon has it. It's the GR11. 500 miles along the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. If you're in Europe then walk it. If you are confident and have some mountain experience also check out the HRP it's a higher altitude route the runs parallel allowing you to stay away from the more touristy bits. But it's a bit trickier.
>>1071601
Near Canmore, Alberta. Took this before going into the backcountry for over a week, I'll try to post those pictures later
>>1071641
The Pyrenees are really underrated, less crowded than the Alps at peak season but equally as beautiful
People living nearby are aware it's a gem but many foreigners choose blindly the Alps over the Pyrenees

Mediocre quality but I didn't feel like lugging my camera with me. Overall great trip, 2 nights well spent. It's a cool hike, plenty of waterfalls, big mountain meadows and a decent vista at the start. Tons of really cool campsites with fire rings and rock chairs. Plus target shooting is legal. It also looks amazing but in the rain, spruce forest near the peak get some super foggy and the ferns practically glow green, but it was pouring and I didn't want to kill my phone. 10/10 would recommend. My new favorite hike within 3 hours of me.

Glacier National Park might be the most beautiful place in North America. I'm itching to go there, but I don't have enough endurance yet to properly enjoy the place, so it'd be a waste to go (I live in NY)
>>1071960
Where's this??????!!!
>>1072315
(I'm the same guy that posted those Glacier pictures.)
Glacier is amazing, I think it's a must-do trip in the next 10 years for any American or Canadian, before the glaciers all disappear. Backcountry permits are hard to get, you have to apply immediately when they open for application and hope that you picked a good date. I'm hoping to get in next year with my brother. As far as car camping goes, don't think that's anything to scoff at, either. The Mt. Brown Lookout picture I posted above gained 4300ft over only 5 miles, one of the toughest hikes in the park. Even if you don't make it into the backcountry, there's still plenty to do if you stick around the roads.
> Glacier National Park might be the most beautiful place in North America.
I'm biased towards Denali deserving that label, just by a hair. But that's really saying something. Glacier is truly an incredible park, and both Denali and Glacier are in a league of their own in comparison to other national parks.
> I'm itching to go there, but I don't have enough endurance yet to properly enjoy the place, so it'd be a waste to go
Be honest with yourself, do you really see it getting better as you get older? When will you have the endurance for it, a year from now? 5 years from now? Not trying to be a dick, but if you don't have a plan and execute on it to get to where you want to be physically, you're just lying to yourself. Don't miss out on a good /out/ trip because you were worried it wouldn't be the best possible /out/ trip.

>>1072292
NH anon here, Moosilauke was the first hike I ever did that gave me the willies. I've been hooked ever since. I'm the one posting pictures of the Presidentials. You should try them or Franconia next. Both have great ridgeline treks that keep you above the treeline for long periods.
Which other mountains did you get?
>>1072365
Thanks for the info and the concern! I understand the point you're making on waiting, but I'm still a novice, only really started hiking over a year ago. I go hiking regularly (it's the only thing that keeps me same anymore), and I'm always increasing my limits. Until I can start doing 2500ft rises every day, I'm worried I'll just get too exhausted after a single hike and just burn the rest of my time recuperating. I'm close though; I can handle a 2500 footer every 2-2.5 days, so I'll be going there soon. Probably gonna go the year after the next.
>>1072667
All the fun mountains there are 6000+ feet of elevation gain
>>1072599
Me and my buddy have done Canon (only up. We had to take the tram down because we took Hi-cannon up as our first hike and got absolutely annihilated), we've gone to Jennings Peak and Sandwich dome, Mt Rattlesnake, and Moosilauke. Man, Moosilauke changed me.
We were going to do Franconia ridge this year, but we got worried after Cannon that we wouldn't be able to make it down from the ridge. But by the end of the trip, we built up so much endurance we're completely confident in hitting up the next year.
We also took the train ride up to Crawford... Man, that place is like a completely different reality. My buddy and I got real anxious being there. We're thinking we're gonna stay at the Highlands Center next year. (Took a real cool pic of the AMC logo overgrown there) Thanks for the advice, we'll make sure to prioritize the ridge and there president's range.
>>1072670
See, that's what I mean! I'm not ready. I'd hike a single day and be wiped out.
>>1072674
Moosilauke is special. It's got that sprawling alpine zone and it's ridiculously prominent.
Franconia and the Presidentials are no joke. You're right to be cautious. They're totally worth it though, except for Washington. Don't go to Washington unless you want to see a big beautiful mountain be raped by fat tourists who drove up to wait in line for hours to get their picture taken with the sign.
Where are you from?
>>1072675
Not him but as long as you're not fat and reasonably disciplined you can get in good hiking and backpacking shape over a season. Hike once or twice a week. Prioritize big burnout hikes that you have to push yourself through. If that fails then take up running. This shit only gets harder as you get older.
>>1072814
I always see pensioners bouncing past me up the mountains when I walk popular hiking trails.
Im not in terrible shape, either. Its just that they have probably gone on hikes as often as they could since they were kids, and they are not big on taking breaks.
Im OK with it.
>>1072359
Hello Pierro
>>1072812
Brooklyn NY born and raised.
I'm first generation in US. Parents were poor Polish immigrants, so I pretty much lived in the city my entire life without knowing much of the outdoors (never went camping, didn't do scouts, etc.) Now that I have a decent income, I try out new things, and wouldn't you know it I really love the outdoors. Ironically, my mom as a kid lived in a small farm on a mountain in Poland, and her entire upbringing was /out/. Now she hears about all my hiking trips and is like "This kid kinda likes the outdoors. Really missed an opportunity there."
I dread going up Mt Washington. I have to go up it eventually, but just the thought of the swarm of tourists up there is making me cringe already.
>>1072814
That's the plan. A year ago, I could barely survive a 6 mile + 800 ft rise trail. This year, if the trail isn't at least 7 miles and 1500 ft, it's too boring for me to even consider. Next milestone for me is to do some 20 miles in an overnight hike. Planning to do that over Labor day weekend.
>>1073707
That's super cool. I got into this kind of stuff later in life too. It's good to hear about others in a similar boat.
Going up Washington felt like going back down into the world. It's heartbreaking. Adams was my pick for the best mountain in the range. It's tall, tough as fuck, and relatively quiet. The ascent is just this mile of talus set to a fucked up grade. It's fantastic.
>>1073710
Good for you, man. I'm in the same spot. Unless it's a real tough hike I just blast through it and it isn't even worth the drive. Backpacking still kicks my ass though. Thirty pounds on your back makes such a staggering difference. It took me awhile doing weighted conditioning hikes to get to the point where I was anything resembling spritely with a big bag on.

I went foraging and found a bunch of cool shit. Pictured here is Sumac berries, Burdock roots, clover, a combination of blueberries and juneberries, and chicory flowers. Not in the picture were chicory roots, which I was roasting in the oven at the time.
I made Kinpira Gobo with the burdock, which was really tasty served alongside some stir fried beef and rice. The chicory I ground and added to coffee, which was...interesting. The sumac was turned into sumac-ade, which is delicious. The flowers were added to various baked goods for appearances sake.
All in all a pretty fun day in the woods. I also found a huge patch of first year burdock that I didn't dig up so I can go back next year and get the flower stalks after they shoot up in the spring.

So far, we flew into Calgary, rented a car from YYC to Banff (because it was cheaper for 2 people than a shuttle and marginally more than a Greyhound), stayed in Banff the first night then did the Cascade/Elk Lake loop (Cr6 [one night], Cr15 [two nights but could've stayed longer], Ek13 [quite a few nights because I had a cooking accident and burned the shit out of my dominant hand].). After that we stayed a couple more nights in Banff, took the free shuttle up to Lake Louise, and hitchhiked north 20 minutes or so to Hector Lake. Stayed there awhile (that's where most of the pics are from) then hitchhiked up to Jasper and been here about a week. Not sure what trail we're gonna do next yet.
