#177- "Making Up Titles Is Hard" edition

Previous >>1057697

Well iCast is over, so hopefully we get to see some neat things coming out on the youtuber. Still super hype about the Curado and Concept Z. A few decent looking hard baits (including juicy new memebaits).

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Small fish stay shallower and tend to be somewhat more aggressive.

Buy fishing stuff... what else? Or just get your girl pregnant. That will solve the problem with too much money. If you thought fishing gear was costly, try shopping for a baby.

Look at the temperature of the air and water. Bass like it about 70 or 75 degrees. If it's hot out and the water is cooler, they'll go deeper until it's close to comfortable. Could be 5, 10, 40 feet deep. Depends on where they can go.

I'd it's getting cooler, like morning/evening, then they'll be shallower.

Bass also luke drop offs and elevation changes lIke underwater humps. Try to find out where and how deep those go.

Finally, bass luke shade and cover. Weeds, sunken trees and bushes, log jams, piers and docks.

Most bass-especially the bigger ones- usually stock to a combination of these kinds of places. It's how they got big. Smaller fish are more likely to be whatever because they're stupid little fish that will likely die before ever becoming bigger bass.

I think it's safe to say that bass are nothing more than swimming trash cans and they will eat anything that fits in their mouth. The fact that savage gear lures work proves it.

Alright so I went to an Academy to finger fuck this reel and it felt like shit in my hand (very blocky, wide, and heavy). The Caenan felt dope as fuck in hand, smoother than butter, and the spool tensioner reeeeally works.
Should I drop the extra $20 for something that feels better in hand?

>>1059957

>>1059963

>>
>>1059964
Shimano exage bx stc. Cant say much about it yet because its brand new.

It is very compact and you can carry it in your backpack. Comes with nice rod tube where you can put it with small reel.
>>
>>1059843
They also have bigger mouths. I've caught hand sized green sunnies on 1/4 oz Dardevles
>>
>>1059838
Bluegill can be smarter than they're given credit for.
What you call "stupid" can also be called "wary".
Many Bluegills have been caught-and many more have seen others caught-on rigs that look remarkably similar to the ones you're throwing. So if they look at it, recognize it as bait and don't take it, how stupid are they REALLY?

>>1059906
Did you measure your braid?
I have found that the diameters listed for most braid are quite understated. Unless you wind them on with a lot of tension on the spool, they're often much bigger than advertised.

>>1059965
REALLY?
You're going to accuse the Japanese-THE most insanely autistic and precise people on the face of the earth-of not knowing how to measure correctly?
Don't go there.
They'll break out their micrometers and test your line's diameter down to the ten-thousandth then declare it "out of spec". You know this. They're even worse than the Germans are.

Also check the reel foot for where your Shimano was ACTUALLY made. One of my new shimanos was made in Malaysia. Out of the box it wasn't near as good or as smooth as a similar model I had that was a generation older and made in Japan.
>>
Anyone else use dipsy divers boat fishing?
>>
Is the One3 Fate just a rebranded Blackout?
I mean No. 8 was a subsidiary of 13, and both rods have that "chrome" look to their blank while both being $80.
>>
>>1059994
It's hard to see when your eyes are all squinty all the time.

Also the Japanese have a trend of denying things that make them look bad death camps, human experiments, lowish line capacity ect
>>
>>1059933
Shimano spinning reels have that bevel on the top of the spool too where it looks like you can really fill it up with line but then when you go to cast it will all jump off the reel.

>>1059994
Most Shimano reels haven't been made in Japan in years. It's only the more expensive stuff. Same with most companies. Most Abus are made in Asia aside from the high end ones still made in Sweden.

Fug, I might have to get the freshwater/saltwater combo license this year.

>>1060109
Power worms are solid, but that's the extent of what I use from them.
>>
>>1060094

Any relatively heavier bass stuff should work. 6'6 to 8 foot Medium to Medium/Heavy rod, decent sized spinning/baitcasting reel (make sure to wash it thoroughly after use), and 10-20# mono or braid should do it.

For lures, you can't go wrong with silver/bronze/gold spoons, twitch baits (like mirrorlures or badonkadonks), zara spooks, and a popping cork with a jig head underneath baited with a Gulp shrimp or curly tail mullet.

If you're lure fishing in Galveston, you'll generally be targeting redfish and speckled trout. Expect to catch lots of sand trout, hardhead, and whiting instead.

If you really just want to have fun and catch shit, then rig a fish finder or kentucky rig with a 1-3oz pyramid sinker, size 2 to 1/0 circle hooks, and bait it with shrimp, cut squid, or mullet (live or cut). You'll still catch plenty of sand trout, hard heads, and whiting, but you can also pull up anything else from a red drum, black drum to a stingray, or even a shark, or some crazy shit you've never even seen before. You'll pretty much always catch SOMETHING on bait.

When looking for fish, try under/around piers or along jetties. If you insist on ignoring structure, then watch the waves and try to notice the places between where they start to crest several dozen feet from the shore. That's a "gut", a little valley in the bottom running parallel to shore. Fish like to cruise around there.
>>
>>1060096
It's the Mach Crush. I think it's the same reel just orange. It's low on my list of things to get.

>Also how the fuck do you afford buying gear so often?

Living with my parents and splitting bills, until I finish my basics and go to a real school, and having a decent paying job.

I usually don't spend more than $300 a month on fishin shit and I have basically everything I want now. I figured I'd buy as much shit as I can right now, so I don't have/want to buy much when I have real bills to pay.

I'm also pretty decent at budgeting and put fishing before things that aren't absolutely essential.
>>
>>1060110
does it matter what kind if im fishing for trout? or will most kinds be decent?? (I got some for free)
>>
>>1060119
Oh for lures I've only ever used their 7" ribbon tail worms for bass. Though the only rainbow trout I've ever caught with powerbait trout dough in the pink and yellow swirl color. Outside of this I don't know what to tell you about trout stuff.
>>

I use the floating trout bait to catch stocked rainbows here in central Texas during the winter with great success. Even get the occasional leftover channel catfish.

Oh yeah, and get a pair of pliers. It seems like everything in the ocean has teeth or spines or some shit to fuck you up.

Don't even try picking up the catfish. Just hold the hook with the pliers and shake until they come off. One of them is still going to stick you with its fin spines. It's going to hurt and burn like a bitch and probably swell some too. There's no cure- not rubbing the fish slime on it, not pissing on it,. Just rinse it off and tough it out.
>>
>>1060118
Damn, just saw that Mach Crush. Looks decent.

Veritas rods are $59 right now at Dick's and I have $10 in rewards... tempting but tryin not to spend much on fishin shit right now because real life stuff. I have a Lightning Rod Shock that has a 10 year old Diawa Strikeforce on it that has rusted bearings. Should I just replace it with a nice reel, and eventually upgrade the rod to something that deserves the nice reel?
It's a 6'6" Fast Medium that I want to use for jerkbaits, top water, light weight lipless cranks/squarebills, and weightless Texas rigs.
I was thinking that something like the Caenan in 7.2:1 would be ideal.
>>
>>1060347
buy a good reel, then upgrade the rod when it takes a shit on you. the lightning rod is just fine for most people, then if you accidentally close it in a car door, its time for a new rod that is worthy of your nice reel.

It sucks in the summer. Best bet is dawn or dusk, find the dropoffs. Best route is finding a patch of weeds with a dropoff just past it. The decent sized bass like to hit it right at sunset as I'm coming from the deep part up to the edge of the weeds.

Only problem doing that is you better have some strong line and it helps to run something weedless. The spot I do that at, there is a thick weed bed that goes out maybe 40', then drops off. So I launch something out as far as I can, and then when I get back to the weeds I just start reeling fast and bring the lure back across the top so I can cast again. Nothing big is ever in the weeds, they lurk outside on the deep end waiting for a meal to come out of the cover. But when you hook a fish, you still have to bring it back through the weeds to land it.
>>
>>1060589
They're hiding where the water temperature is closest to comfy for them, and where the sun isn't shining directly in their eyes. So shady spots, cover or dropoffs (aka "structure") where the water temp is closest to 70 degrees. If you've been fishing the shallows, that would be why you're not seeing any fish now-they aren't there anymore.

The water's warm so they are still active and feeding, it's just down in the bottom of the lake instead of up top. Bottom-probing and deep water lures and rigs are what works this time of year, so jigs (with some sort of flavorful trailer preferred), deeper diving crankbaits, sinking/suspending jerkbaits, bobber suspended marabou jigs, and for soft plastics Ned, Carolina, and drop shot-rigged stuff.
>>
>>1060407
please mates, answer me
>>
>>1060572
I've only done it once and it was with a Gamakatsu, but my drag was super high cause I was using flipping hooks the day before and forgot about it.

>>1060589
If you can find where the deep spots are with access to shallow water (underwater ditches, holes, drop offs, ect) you'll find a fish eventually. The best time to go is either in morning or evening when the water is cooling. Fish will move up shallower along those spots.

When you're fishing shade lines try to parallel the line and keep the lure in the sunny part of the shade, then work your way in if you think there's fish there.

Oh and slow down your lure presentation.
>>

>>
>>1061335

It's your money.

Personally, I think if you fish long enough, you'll catch plenty of big ones. Unless your very first bass is 10 or more pounds or there's some really unique circumstances attached to it, I wouldn't bother.
I'd spend the money I save on more fishing stuff.
>>
>>1061352
I agree. Only fish I think I would get a replica made for is if I catch a 50 inch northern in Canada or if I catch a 10+ pound Lmb which is really rare for up north. Maybe a giant smallie too (8+ pounds)
>>
>>1061356
10+lb LMB is state-record tier for lots of places up there.
When I was growing up in SoFlo I caught a 5-1/2lb bass out of the local golf course pond. My dad, who is from northern Michigan, said that a fish like that up there would have gotten my picture put in the paper.
Down in Florida it was just another bass in another pond.

Bringing it back, Anon will probably never catch one that's 10lbs+ in Canada. Maybe that's your point, but if he wants to mount one, a 5-7# lmb is more than respectable for up there, and better than most locals will do in a lifetime.
>>
>>1061361

Yeah. Even out of Lake Bastrop, I can pull out at least one bass approaching 5 lbs every trip. Even easier if I go to the place out behind work or any of the park ponds with catch and release/slot limits.

I'm looking for some advice on hooks for LRF I've recently bought a 6" long 2-10g casting weight rod and the tackle shop I bought it from didn't have any small worm hooks. I've looked in all my usual online shops and I have no idea what size hooks I'm looking to get? I usually use 4-5 inch soft plastics on a 2/0 or 3/0 worm hook and rig them Texas style as I fish rocky weedy saltwater spots. I'm still going to use some of my 4" SP weightless but I'm also looking at using something like the 1" paddletails and worms. So what size jig heads and hooked would I need? Also do they stop making wide gape hooks once they get small as I can't seem to find any anywhere?

you sound like a little bitch so wont share the the other poacher stories (which are actually far worse) also no game warden within 100 miles of that spot. wardens here are spread thin and have to patrol many miles of area, a call to them usually means one may or may not show. so along with being a huge assuming faggot youre still a bitch. now go catch some gills for your momma who you probably still live with nigga.

So i went fishing at this farm pond yesterday and one of the neighbors kid was there and wanted to help land a fish i caught. So the first thing he did was to grab the line to take the fish out of the water by the line, before i had anytime to to say anything my line snapped and the fish got away. did thing had to explain to a 15 year old kid way you dont grab the line to land a fish.

It was about 4 pounds i was a little salty.

Been fishing with that new rod and reel past few days now and like it. Its very sensitive and light to use compared to my older, much heavier rod. I can cast small lures much farther now. I also like that hole in the handle so you can put your finger straight against the rod and feel everything better.

Dont know how it works with large fish but i did not notice any weaknesses. What you can expect from such lightweight rod anyways? Works perfectly for its purpose.

What rod is it? I'm looking for a 7' light action rod. Not a lot of light model bass rods out there. Still searching but will most likely have to wrap my own. I have a fly rod blank that I made into a ul spinning rod but really want a ul-l 'bass type' rod to use.

People who shoot at someone's car from the bushes because they threw rocks in their fishing area is seriously overreacting.

Trying to justify firing live rounds at someone's car with, "But they were poaching!" and "Well they were assholes!" is a pretty weak reason to shoot up someone's car. And while hidden in the bushes no less.

It's irresponsible gun use and you're bragging about it like it was some hot shit.

I can't give an informed opinion on it since my fishing conditions aren't rigorous. Fishing ponds that have no structure, but it casts decently far and the retrieve is smooth. Haven't had a fish pull the drag on it since I keep it a little high.
I will say the drag on the spinning Stratus is rather nice. I have a size 25 on a finesse set up and the fish pull it consistently, and if I try and reel while they're dragging out line it hasn't shit on me yet.

You just have to practice. Keep loosening your brakes and spool tension as you get better. I keep my spool tension just tight enough to keep the spool from moving side to side. It takes a bit to train your thumb, but it's not impossible.

Oh and make sure you're using good form. It helps a lot.

Mepps a best
If I had to pick one lure and one lure only for freshwater a spinner sure would be in the lineup if not the winner.
You can catch pretty much anything on those suckers. Pike, perch, trout, any kind of predator (no bass here where I live). Hell, I even caught a tench on one some years ago.
I even have a few in my tackle box (I only fish saltwater off the coast nowadays - no freshwater spots I can fish around) for those days where I wanna try something completely different.
>>
>>1061907
spoons are better
>>
>>1061907
I bought them for bass fishing out here. Should I use them on my spinning rod or baitcaster? I have a curado and penn fierce 2
>>
>>1061910
Almost everybody uses spoons in some variety so fish see all sorts of spoons all the time.
And spoons mimic little fish while a spinner looks like nothing edible. I theorise it looks like candy to a fish - they know it prolly aint food but they still want to taste it.

>>1061912
Don't know much about baitcasters but I am assuming judging from looks only that you need some weight behind to make a decent cast.
Spinners are quite light you know so I would imagine spinning reels being better. But give them both a shot and see what you prefer.
>>
>>1061915
also spoons are more versatile, fish love them when you jig them or swim them or even pull them along the top like a topwater
>>
>>1061916
You're not wrong. All I am saying is that spinners are also GOAT-tier and most certainly one of the best lures around. Betting on only one lure is stupid but a spinner sure is among the contenders if I had to pick only one.

Sea kayak fishing question I've been slow jigging and Tai rubbering for a few weeks now up to 40 mtrs depth with some nice catches but of a normal size (bout 500g fish to 3 kilos) I want to go deeper say 100mtrs for that 6 to 10 kg fishes but I know that along with those mahi mahi and the groupers there are some huge ass 40-60 kilos tunas down there. My gear is sufficient to target such a fish but my shitty inflatable yak is well an inflatable yak. Should I get a hit from such a monstrosity attempt to reel it in or should I just cut my line and avoid surfing in Neptune's kingdom? My yak is an advanced elements straight edge.

What's the Lew's claim for people to buy their reels?
Shimano and Abu have cult followings and "superior craftsmanship".
I guess I'm asking what is the selling point to get a Lew's when for the same price you can have a Curado?
>>
>>1062038

What's Pflueger's?
What's 13 Fishing's?

Most of them don't have a claim, it's preference and budget that comes into play
>>
>>1062044
pretty much
>>
>>1062051
Can't speak for Pfluger, but 13 Fishing's gimmick/selling point appears to be "Japanese crafted X", high amounts of drag, offering 8.1:1 on everything, and edgy designs for the 8-28 demographic. They've outright said in a video that they've been targeting the young crowd and been profiting.
>>
Can you drop shot effectively without a boat? I fish from shore so is it worth it to start drop shoting?
>>
>>1062065
Depends on the size of the body of water.
If they're out 50yds from shore and 30ft deep it'll be hard, but if you're fishing structure and docks at a lake then you'll be fine from shore.
Also if you go to a local pond that has bass in them a drop shot will catch the fish for you.
I've been to some ponds and the bastards won't touch a crank or texas rig, but can't resist a nose hooked or wacky drop shot.
>>
>>1062066
I've been getting skunked recently, and I haven't tried drop shoting so I think ima give it a try. I heard it catches a ton of fish . When you cast are you pitching mostly?
>>
>>1062068
>When you cast are you pitching mostly?
Well if there's some obvious structure then pitching to it would be ideal and then slowly working it back to you from there, but if I'm at a pond I'll cast as far as I can to the center of the pond and constantly work it back to me with not pauses and slowly reeling in my slack. Once the rig is maybe 20ft from the bank I'll slow my presentation all the way down with frequent pauses (but always keep your slack line to a minimum so you can feel the subtle bites). Sometimes I'll get bites out in the center of the pond while moving it hastily, but a majority of the strikes are within the 20ft range worked very finesee. If there's a tree that hangs over the pond offering shade work those spots extra hard with a drop shot. I don't know why, but if I pitch a texas rig under a tree they can be finicky, but a drop shot under a tree seems to produce way better.
>>
>>1062060
Okay you got me there, but 13 Fishing's stuff seems legit. Although I am the "younger crowd". Their reels feel so nice and you can get the same reel in a variety of gear ratios. Only problem? I'm poor and can't afford them (looking at the Concept A)
>>
>>1062084
If they have the compatibility, buying an Origin C and replacing the bearings for the polymer looks like it could be choice. And that should be like $115 or something.

Original Lew's was the first high-speed (for the time), low-profile memcaster.
This time around they're just trading on the reputation of 30+ years ago.
It's a way to have good name recognition and a customer base without having to do any work building it.

>>1062051
>>1062060
Pflueger's name was made on their Medalist Fly Reels, which were the first modern fly reels, went basically unchanged for 60 years and got copied by everyone under the sun, particularly after Shakespeare bought them in the mid-60s.
Nowadays they're the parent company's mid-tier brand, offering decent quality without being absolute shit-tier like Shakespeare
